Last night was my first time visiting Taco Guild. This has got to be one of my top taco spots. I loved the chips and salsa. But we also got some chorizo queso which was DIVINE. I also ordered a couple tacos, one which was coconut shrimp. So good!!! I enjoyed a great spicy margarita. And our service was great! What a fun spot if you're bringing folks from out of town. In Phoenix and wanted to change up the taco scene with a return to an old favorite, Taco Guild. Located in an old church, the interior still is ethereal and the old alter being the bar is innovative. You feel like you need to speak quietly but obviously, that is not the case. The chips and salsa are a good start with three different spice levels. The chips are fresh and perfectly salted. Tacos here are not street tacos and that is evident by the prices, a healthy chunk per taco. We each ordered two tacos that are full sized and stuffed with ingredients. The fried fish taco was lightly battered and flaky cod with Mexican slaw and chipolte aioli. The dry Mexican slaw overwhelmed the dish and made it difficult to taste the other ingredients. The carnitas taco with braised pork, pickled onions and cilantro was juicy. The panko coconut shrimp with diced pineapple salsa and green onion needs more salsa or an aioli for flavor. Our final taco was the shredded duck breast with lemon / pineapple crema, duck skin chicharron, green onions and pear slaw. Again, a weaker flavor profile and no WOW factor. Taco Guild has a beautiful building, interior and layout but the large tacos are lacking real flavor combinations that make you wanting to return. The tacos are stuffed and large but not memorable, it taste to much like fillers not flavor bombs. I hope that a review and tweak of the menu will propel they back to more exciting times. read more

Taco Guild holds a special place in my heart. When I was moving to Phoenix, I came a few months early to search for a place to live. During this trip, after arriving in Phoenix, the first place I had dinner was Taco Guild. Ambiance (5/5): This is one of the areas where Taco Guild shines. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This Mexican restaurant and bar is housed in what used to be a church. What cool surroundings! They live up to the vibe inside with chandeliers, stained glass windows, and more. Really cool ambiance.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] On my most recent visit, I sat at the bar. Service (4/5): Solid service overall. The bartenders were nice, attentive, and my evening ran smoothly. I had a good number of cocktails and they also hooked me up with some free chips and salsa even though I wasn't eating. That was a nice touch. My only complaint? They close pretty early. I would expect a place like this to stay open until midnight or later. Drinks (4.5/5): Solid list of cocktails, with an emphasis on tequila and mezcal as you would expect. I had their shot of the day (which was tequila based), two of their margaritas (their classic and one aged in barrels), and a mezcal Old Fashioned. All of my drinks were elevated and well done. And the best part is they have both a happy hour and a reverse happy hour. I took advantage of their reverse happy hour with a nice discount on my cocktails. Food (4/5): While I didn't eat on my most recent visit, I did the first time. But let me start off by saying their chips and salsa are to die for. They serve you three salsas: red, green, and orange. The orange is spicy, so I stayed away from it because I'm not that life. I tend to gravitate toward green salsa, but here, the red salsa is the star. It's arguably the best salsa I've had in my life! Try it, I bet you'll agree with me. On my first visit, I had three tacos. Taco Guild is the type of spot with elevated, creative tacos. The only downside? The food is a bit pricey. The tacos weren't huge, but they were good. I'm looking forward to my next visit to try more of their food. The chips and salsa will be a given. The deviled eggs looked great too. Chips come out with 3 home made salsa's. I like hot, but the hottest (I was warned was too hot for me!). The medium was so good we asked if they sold it, but they were out of bottles at the moment to the server brought me a little to take home. FOOD was all for the most part really great!!! When, not if we go back, we will skip the brisket Taco and if I get the street corn, I will get the spiced version not the traditional version. DRINKS were also outstanding. My wife enjoyed one of the Margarita where you get to choose the flavor and I have Both a Tequila and Mezcal Old fashion and discovered one of my new favorite drinks, that Mezcal Old Fashion! I had Barbacoa and chipotle cherry steak tacos, while my partner had carnitas, California and the shrimp fajita. We both LOVED our food. The chipotle cherry steak was such a bold and delicious flavor. Never had tacos like this and I'm so impressed with the flavor combinations! The Taco Guild is such a cool venue. My mom and I were cruising down the road looking for a place to eat. I spotted a few different options on Yelp, this being one of those options. As we drove by, I yelled, "Turn here!" so that my mom would pull into the right driveway. The building is an old church that has been converted into a restaurant. They have kept many of the structures that make it familiar as a church such as the stone steeple outside, the stained glass windows inside, and pew seats converted into dining chairs throughout the great hall. It is fun to see the full bar positioned where you would normally find the pulpit, but instead of a preacher, there is a bartender serving your favorite libations and large screen television showing the latest game. Tacos aren't the only thing on the menu. While these all seemed delicious, we both enjoyed a chile rellano. Prior to that, we indulged in their white queso with green chiles. It was so addictive we took some home with us. The food is very anglicized. If you are from the midwest, it will probably seem authentic. If you have been living in the southwest and eating any combination of Mexican, TexMex, CaliMex, New Mexican food, this place probably won't be that pleasing to your palette. It's decent food, but if I had a chance to return or try something new in the area, I'd opt for the latter. Although it was a fun experience because of the ambience. Cool atmosphere and the bartender was pretty friendly however this place is expensive and the taco was mediocre in my opinion. I had the chicken tinga and a side of beans. This was my second stop of the day after going to huarachis downtown, might not be fair to compare the two but.. they're both Mexican restaurants that sell tacos in Phx... disappointing experience here however gorgeous restaurant and like I said the bartender was friendly and changed the tv to the golf tourney at my request which I always appreciate. The holy grail of tacos no pun intended. This taco spot is in uptown phoenix. This location used to be a church but they revamped it to a taco spot. I love confession hour lol pun intended and taco Tuesday! I know 8 bucks is a bit much for a taco but they are gourmet and more than enough protein, toppings, and flavor in each. I only ate two the last time I went. There was nothing old about their old fashion very tasty no cherry. Service was great and they filled up that chip bowl at least 3 times . First time here, landed at this place without really looking. I sat at the bar and walked right in. The service was great, super friendly and attentive. I had the shrimp ceviche plate and a duck taco to go with that. Both were delicious, I can't wait to come back and try more items on the menu. This feels like one of those places people hype up more than necessary because the interior and overall concept are undeniably cool. Don't get me wrong, the tacos were good, but the price point felt a little hard to justify. I'd personally rather head to Taco Chelo or Céntrico for a more satisfying value. That said, if you're stopping by for a small bite or a single drink, the space itself is worth seeing. The stained glass and renovated church setting are genuinely striking and give the place a unique atmosphere. UPDATE - Taco Guild is truly a GEM! The bartending technique here is better than most upscale steakhouses in Phoenix. The cocktails are not cheap, but they are worth the price especially on HH. The ice cubes are crystal clear and they have a special shaped one for the highballs. I had the Mescal Manhattan and it was properly cooled and diluted before pouring on the beautiful cube. The balance was spot on for me. Our bartender was attentive and accurate with our orders. The complementary chips and salsas are next level. You get three salsas/sauces to sample on the thin and crispy chips. Don't freak out when you see the pricing on the tacos. They range from $7-10 but these are not little street tacos. One could be a meal especially paired with the chips and salsa. Two tacos were almost more than we could handle. The Chipotle Cherry Steak was tasty -albeit a bit sweet for my taste. My wife loved the Carnitas and my favorite was the California or the Shrimp. Just do it! You won't be disappointed if you like well executed cocktails and great Southwest flavors. read more

Being from So Cal, you know I had to compare the taco scene. With as many reviews this place had, I still have to say Cali reigns supreme. The food and service was great, but the the style of the taco choices weren't really authentic. The building is the 2nd oldest in Phoenix which is a church converted into a restaurant. The chips and salsa were actually really good. The regular salsa was better than the green and habanero. To start, tortillas were amazing and the size of 1 taco has enough meat for 2...but for the meats, the chipotle cherry steak was the most recommended but I felt it tasted like it was marinated in cherry juice and not cooked with cherry wood. The California taco was cool. The brisket taco was lacking a bit of flavor. The duck taco was really good. My husband and I traveled from San Antonio, Texas to enjoy a weekend in Arizona celebrating our anniversary and his birthday. We are very harsh critics of tacos being from South Texas so we wanted to see what Arizona had to offer. We were in desperate need of some food after feeling like we were about to die, trying to foolishly hike the Cholla Trail on the Camelback Mountains. I stayed in the car while my husband ran inside to grab us some tacos and drinks before heading back to our hotel since we had a dinner reservation later that evening. My husband asked the bartender which of the beef tacos which was better, the barbacoa or the brisket. The guy strongly recommended the brisket, so that's what we went with. We also got the chicken tinga taco and the Mexican Coke and we were given a free order of chips and salsa. The beef taco was very good, very creative. The slaw and fried pickle chips were really good, but the brisket was a bit too lean and dry to work well in a taco. We were definitely expecting it to have a little bit more fat and moisture. The chicken taco was insanely delicious, we absolutely loved it! Their tacos come on corn tortillas that are thin but sturdy, and they warmed them up just right, nothing worse than a cold corn tortilla that rips in the middle of eating. The chips and salsa were so delicious, the chips were still hot as if they just made them and the salsa definitely tasted like it was fresh from that morning. The price-point was definitely higher than what we would pay in San Antonio but everyone told us that is to be expected one in Scottsdale. The restaurant itself is an old renovated cathedral and it is so beautiful! There were so many beautiful places to see, I'm definitely looking forward to planning another trip to Arizona. read more

Our recent visit to Taco Guild was unfortunately underwhelming. Although the atmosphere is unique and what appears to be an old, renovated church, the service was lackluster, and the food lacked flavor. We were sitting out on the patio and felt that we saw every other table servers 3 to 4 times more frequently than we saw our own. We are commonly waiting 15 to 20 minutes for our water to be refilled. The tacos that we had is our main were OK, but seemed to lack flavor. I was particularly disappointed with the Barbacoa tacos, which I did not feel had lot of wow factor to them. My husband and I frequent Taco Guild at least once a month for the past 8 years. We went on our second date here when we first met so this place is near and dear to us. Our Favorite taco is the chipotle cherry steak we get it on lettuce cups. Eating the whole bowl of Chips and salsa is the very reason for lettuce cups instead of Tortillas. I've visited this restaurant a few times before for special occasions and previously had very good experiences, which is why this visit was especially upsetting. This was also my first time bringing my children, who had saved up money to take me out for Mother's Day dinner. Unfortunately, almost every item we ordered had quality or preparation issues. We started with the Guild Fries appetizer, which arrived completely drenched in what tasted like a bland mayonnaise-based sauce with almost no flavor besides an overwhelming cumin taste. On top of that, there was an excessive amount of guacamole dumped over the fries, making them extremely soggy and unpleasant to eat. My daughter ordered the Chipotle Cherry Steak Taco in a lettuce cup and specifically requested blue cheese, which was completely missing. The lettuce itself was wilted and brown around the edges, which honestly made it look like it was going bad. My husband ordered the duck taco, which was supposed to include crispy duck skin, but the amount served was barely larger than a fingernail. There was also no cream included, making the taco dry and very unsatisfying overall. I ordered the Jackson taco, which was sloppily plated and absolutely drowned in grease. It was nearly impossible to pick up without everything sliding apart. I was also surprised to see repeated menu spelling issues. The menu repeatedly uses the word "consume" instead of "consommé," while online it correctly says "side of consommé." It gives the impression that there is very little attention to detail or proofreading happening. The overall experience was extremely disappointing. The quality of the food has declined severely from what I previously experienced at Taco Guild, while the prices continue to rise or remain high without the quality to justify them. This was honestly sad to experience on what was supposed to be a special Mother's Day dinner with my family. I felt dissatisfied to the point of being genuinely disgusted by parts of the meal, I did take the time to also email the manager who's email is listed on the website and so far I have gotten no response or acknowledgment. read more

Genuinely I had zero intentions of eating tacos but my friend was begging me to try this place. We went thrifting then went over and OH MY GOD. I felt like I walked into an old Catholic Church. The vibes were immaculate. I felt like I was 5 again attending a mass service. Our waiter Missy was so attentive and so sweet. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and there was only about 3 - 4 parties seated and no wait time. The customer service was nice because not only did our server tend to our need but the bartender also made sure to come over to personally ask what we would like to drink and made sure that we were taken care of with our drinks. For starters we had the chips and salsa and all 3 of the salsas were fantastic. Beware of the orange one though! It may be habanero but it has a spice that hits your mouth at the back end. We ordered the carnitas and barbacoa tacos on flour tortillas. The tacos were really good to us and better than most taco spots in our opinion. The ambiance is nice as well. So glad someone recommended this place! I've driven by numerous times and so glad i finally stopped by on Cinco de Drinko. Happy hour is from 2pm to 6 pm. $2 off margaritas, wine, and beer and starters. The summer solstice margarita was delicious and so was the mango 1893. The peach sangria was good, but too sweet for me. I had the guac, and the Chipotle cherry steak taco on their homemade corn tortilla, both were delicious. Their salsa was to die for. How cool that this was a former church. I love the ambiance of this place. The bartenders were awesome and cute, too. Lol. When a friend came into town and wanted tacos, I thought of this place. I have been here before but it has been 10+ years. The location is lovely. It looks like a church, with huge stain glass windows. Parking is limited, but the neighborhood has street parking too. It was fairly busy on a Friday night. We made reservations ahead of time just in case as well. They had live music, which was quite loud. It made it hard to have any sort of conversations. He took a break and the noise level was so nice. He was great... Just very loud. Service was pretty good. Our server was lovely and informative. He made up for a late drink with a free dessert so that was nice. Now for the most important part, the food. The tacos are a bit pricey, but they are bigger than typical street tacos. I had the lamb and the cherry steak. The lamb was not my favorite honestly. I would have rather have 2 of the steak because it was delicious. The chips and salsa were good. The spicier options were spicy, but not that tasty for me. I got the street corn off the cob, and it was good. I've had better, but I've also had worse. Overall, I'm glad I came back after so long. Even the red and green had a bit of kick but not too bad. Great chips! Margarita's were on happy hour special, so several of us had some of differing types. Very yummy but a bit small and less alcohol than what we were used to. The one beer on tap i had was ok. Food - we all had a variety of taco's and one person had a pasta dish. They varied - some good, some great, and some meh. A pork one was good; fish based one was fairly good; others so so overall. We also got rice on the side and it was very bland and disappointing - more than one person said this. Street corn was good overall - one spicy and one not and we liked both. Sad about dessert - a coffee brûlée sounded fantastic but they were out of it, so we left without any dessert. Service was great overall; value ok overall. Then a few minutes into eating it, he came again and said "Is it tasting like you guys are going to want another serving of churros?" I really hope that restaurants know that this behavior is a good way to ensure I don't come back. Over the next hour multiple groups came in, a few with reservations and all individuals and groups (some with no reservations, but stated they were locals) were taken to tables. After checking in with the host she apologized and said she would seat us, after another twenty minutes, we were seated and missed happy hour, due to the extreme delay. I was told about this place by a friend and I was intrigued that it was in an old church. The original stained glass windows are still there as are other things like the wood from the altar. Interesting - where the altar used to be, is now the bar. Servers and staff are so friendly. They make their own salsa and you get to try three of them with their homemade chips. Yum! Unfortunately, we don't know when or if we'll ever visit Taco Guid again... personally strongly leaning towards probably not! Let me begin by saying that our first two visits by take away were great & we were so looking forward to eating in on a time we were in the area! So here we are... a Monday evening after a couple hours @ the nail salon & not feeling like cooking dinner, I've had a long weekend of work so let's go to dinner & enjoy a meal @ the Taco Guild.. well that sounds great to us but it didn't end up as such! Sounded great for a very short while... very short I might stress!!! Upon entering we were greeting rushingly by a female server wearing THE ONLY BLUE SHIRT, I did not get her name but I did notice that everyone else was wearing a BLACK TACO GUILD SHIRT. she said she'd clean a side booth area although they weren't busy @ all probably seven tables when we arrived @7:45 on this Monday evening. Once we sat we were given the standard complimentary tortilla chips with 3 salsa's & then quickly within a flash once again appeared THE ONLY GIRL WITH THE BLUE SHIRT that sat us.... yes we were the ones that didn't know but we picked the straw & ended up with the short one that got THE ONLY GIRL WITH THE BLUE SHIRT as our server! Okay, this is when hubby looks & says babe feel like we shoulda got take out...we hold our breath, yes wine & dos xx for hubby please ASAP! Server comes & all is well, fine.. we order empanadas... they're great, we are from Miami ... so we will be kind, they were good...a whole other twist as with all cultures of foods so you know where I'm going with the empanadas being that I'm from Miami! The Guild entree my hubby was actually more happy with the take out! Let me fast forward a bit, I turn to look @ my wrist as the girl with THE BLUE SHIRT appears @ 8:15 pm on MONDAY to inform us that BAR & KITCHEN will be CLOSING @ 8:30pm... Wait Taco Guild clearly posts their hours everywhere that they close @ 9 pm on Monday !!!! I looked @ my husband pissed, wait no beyond pissed.... I've had a hell of a weekend at my job this weekend. I come home, treat myself to some pamper @ the nail salon & now , I'm told to gulp down my wine, decide which desert 45 minutes before closing & order that espresso martini that's going to die!!! WOW, thank you GIRL IN BLUE SHIRT!!!!!!! Wait, sorry guys I'm not finished with my punchline... my foodies are going to love this one!!!! Once we're informed of the new closing times of the bar & kitchen @8:30 taken effect immediately... I'm now flipping my wrist back n forth to watch my time yet all of a sudden I notice the GIRL IN BLUE SHIRT you guessed it ....., no where to be found ( WOW ) No, I'm so sorry I look over & she's choosing to clean a counter top in the open kitchen that I can see....clear as day from where I'm sitting versus to getting our second drink order @ 8:25, therefore I take it upon myself to walk to the bar to order my husbands's beer & my wine! Are you joking, then you have the audacity... YOU GIRL IN BLUE SHIRT... to come to us to ask if we need anything after the bartender brings our drinks as I'm watching you walk around with a rag! Okay, the manager tried to make right because he did deliver our food yet we NEVER once got one single apology for the horrible service from the GIRL IN THE BLUE SHIRT that we received from whoever that person that was....I'm not sure if she was of some sort of assistant because she was the only person who wasn't wearing a black shirt with the Taco Guild logo. Unfortunately, I'm so disappointed with our dining experience & because of this we'll never go back there ever again! We choose to go out for many reasons but they do not include being ignored, having to eat around dirty plates, having to get up from your table to go to the bar to place your order because your watching your server THE GIRL IN THE BLUE SHIRT clean the back expo area... too busy for us, so I'm watching her clean but I'm wanting another glass of wine .., only 4 minutes left before the new closing time of 8:30 pm!!!!!!! OMG yes I walked my butt over to the bar because yes she could care less & wouldn't drop her rag to get my wine! I'm ending this review with a final note by saying that servers like that can end up making or breaking a restaurant.... shame on servers like that! I was a server for 10 yrs in my twenties, no excuse for the service that we received.... You doll yourself up, curl your hair, do whatever your thing is & you sit down... expect a nice evening out , You don't expect adjusted closing time slots for the kitchen & bar plus a GIRL IN THE BLUE SHIRT that disappears . read more
