Sy's holds a special place in my heart.. A good friend of mine and I use to always skip school, ride the bus down call each other in sick from the pay phone on the corner and grab a few slices. I'm not a fan of "gourmet" pizza, I like my crust thin and my toppings greasy. Sy's delivers on both. Throw a few garlic knots on for .25 and you've got yourself a filling lunch for about 5 bucks. So the fiancé and I joined a cross fit gym (review to follow) and we finished our first work-out and we decided to treat ourselves to a few slices. To add to that we've been eating primarily Paelo the last few weeks with both of us seeing really decent results. So we've tried Papa's (won't dine there again), Track Town, not bad for a buffet and the pizza comes in various flaves to get your variety on) I'd go back, Figaro's (easy delivery service but overpriced and on the weak side), Sizzle Pie not a bad slice but not making me have to return, and lastly Sy's. I'm originally from NY and I know a good slice of pie. The first three places I visited pale in comparison to a slice of NY-Goodness. I have to say, opening the door at Sy's had a welcome aroma of home town smells. Might we have found our local shop to grab a slice to give in to the carb gods? Quite possibly!!! We both ordered a traditional slice (GF added Pepperoni to hers) and a slice of Sicilian and a few garlic knots. The slices are about the most resembling of NY pizza as I have come to cherish. The Sicilian was fun and by that I mean it was a gluttonous treat. Back to the traditional slice - The crust was crispy and tasty. The slices are for the most part pre-made and you decide on what toppings you want added. This means that the additional toppings are added and just cooked on top rather than in the mix. The sauce is a little on the sweet side for me but that is me being EXTREMELY picky. I would definitely go back but I am still going to try out other pizza shops in the Spring/Eug area. Not basing my 4 stars on it but the parking situation is not fun as it is in the heart of UofO country. I am sure we will be back to enjoy some carbs a la Italian influence :) read more

First things first: "New York" pizza is nothing to brag about. New York is a city of superlatives, arguably the greatest city on Earth. From Madison Avenue to Yankee Stadium, there is no place like it...but I've spent years there and feel obligated to report that for all its glamour, sophistication, and excellence, New York does not have exceptionally good pizza. Pizza aficionados know that Chicago (for deep-dish lovers) and Connecticut (for thin-crust types) rule the American pizza roost. So, before you visit, realize that this restaurant was named by someone who didn't particularly know his pizza. That's a pretty fair way to set your expectations. On a more positive note, Sy's has been around in its convenient Alder Street location forever, makes big ol' pies, and sells them by the slice. I credit them for this, but the slice offering is made poorer by the fact that they put the toppings on just before reheating each slice, rather than baking them on the way REAL New York pizzerias do, and the toppings tend to fall off accordingly. It's on campus, open late, affordable, and a much-adored Eugene icon. The pizza's just okay by New York standards, or even by Eugene standards. There are quite a few places that are better, even here in Eugene, another town not exactly renowned for outstanding pizza, or for that matter, restaurant food in general. The sauce is rather bland, the pizzas unusually greasy, the crust unexceptional...aside from the size, there is nothing that sets Sy's pizzas apart from the crowd. Sy's is especially not the place to go if you are into veggie pizza - the rather ordinary selection of vegetables is neither high-quality nor generously applied - but is a good selection if you like an exceptionally greasy, gooey cheese pizza. The service varies...sometimes they have a decent person working there for a while, a lot of times it bites. Obviously, the owner (I'm told it hasn't been Sy for a long time now) doesn't give a damn about the service. And, while you can cop a squat (literally) on the decades-old, uncomfortably low stools and eat while viewing yourself and your fellow diners in the mirrored walls, it's not a great place to eat, which is why the great majority of Sy's patrons take their pizza to go. You cannot graduate from UO without having a slice, or at least some garlic knots if you are one of those vegan types. On the other hand, if you're a townie, you probably don't eat at Sy's regularly...those of us who have lived here a while have found better places, and mostly leave Sy's to the UO crowd. By all means, check it out; if you're gonna live in Eugene, you might as well be familiar with Sy's. read more

No bells-and-whistles New York style pizza. It's SO GOOD! I was super-disappointed when they discontinued the free slice thing they used to do... that was my hook-up for like two years. The atmosphere is odd. Low stools, very cramped, kind of dirty (only because it's so busy most of the time) and there are these mirrors that you face when you're eating. Very disconcerting! Eh, but it's a cool place. Imagine the movie Empire Records, only it's a pizza parlor, and the staff is slightly more surly/jaded, slightly less enthusiastic/cheesy. I kind of like that it's consistently overrun with college students... I get so sick of finding yuppies or bratty kids almost anywhere I go in this town. So I did a review for the other location & hated it - got the deep dish pizza & it was NASTY. I just got a slice from THIS location by campus the other day and it was pretty good. =) Not the best pizza I have ever had, but the best I've had in Eugene so far. Yes, I would go back for more! You will find me at Sy's late at night more often than any other place. Toppings get piled high. Faves are fresh mushrooms (sliced super thin, almost shredded) and sausage (thin long slices of italian sausage). Might be the most satisfying sausage I've had on pizza from any inexpensive pizza place. This is not gourmet pizza or fancy pants in any way, just real pizza for real people. Sy's is a place to grub super tasty thick or thin crust pizza. I love it, my kid's love it, out of town visitors love it. Side note: their sodas feature the absolute best ice in Eugene. It's the best. Period. You can complain all you want about the music, the attitude, the lack of consistency. But when you get that slice in your hand and bite down on a piece of Sy's, you're an asshole if you complain after that. Sy's is the most unique place i've ever dinned at. I love the people there, and the loud music makes the people happy, which means good slices. Even when the room is filled with students (noon high school lunch rush is to be avoided if you're not a fan of lots of people in a tight space) the crew is rocking fast and hard. Go to Sy's after a ducks football win and be ready for an experience. I've seen people meet and fall in love at Sy's. I've seen heartbreak at Sy's. I've even seen a cook dance up and down like a monkey, shouting at a bitching customer. This place is More than pizza. It's culture. Yes, you can go to the Saturday market and get a taste for Eugene. But where do the townies go on a Monday night? They're hanging at Sy's, watching wrestling and listening to metal, happily eating one of the best slices of pizza on the west coast. read more

Ok, I know I am a picky NY girl used to good pizza, but this place doesn't serve it! It may be upstate NY but definitely not the city. Yea, they've got a nice big slice you can fold over, but the similarities stop there. Oy.. They put your toppings on then heat it up without putting cheese over it. I love Sy's. It's so close to campus, and when I went to U of O ten years ago (yikes!) getting a slice was a treat on my limited budget. I think $2.50 is decent for a slice of cheese pizza, especially when it's thisGOOD! I've had their whole pizzas before, and while they're tasty, they just aren't as good as that piping hot-from-the-oven single slice. For nostalgia sake I took my 7 year old son here today. We each had a slice. Service was fast and pleasant, and the place hasn't changed a bit. Must be a successful business model. :) It's always been a little rough around the edges, and I believe the dust on the window sills is probably the same from when I lived in Eugene, all those years ago. read more

One of the best pizzeria's in Eugene in a small old-school pizza joint. A no fuss interior of stools and walls lined with photos holds some of the tastiest pizza in the area. There are three base pizzas; traditional manhattan-style with marinara, deep dish with marinara, and deep dish topped with cheese. From there you choose your additional toppings and it is then off to the oven to finish. They are the only place to no burn their vegetables to burnt oblivion while still keeping the pizza nice and crispy. It is the only place where I can enjoy my Canadian bacon and onions that aren't sad strips of their former self. I think it is best enjoyed there with the pizza hot and fresh from the oven. Skip the Domino's and Pizza Hut and come to places like Sy's for some pizza that is truly top-notch. read more

I've been twice to grab a slice before doing the second half of the dreaded "Portland to Eugene and back in one day". I go to school in NY and I've had my share of good, cheap pizza back there and this gives my mainstay spot upstate a run for the title. I have had the white slice (no tomato sauce with ricotta and a thick piece of mozzarella) twice and it hit the spot both times. The garlic knots are also tasty. Often times pizza places overdo it. Sy's is so yummy and is the only pizzeria that is worth paying by the slice. Pizza places always leave me feeling robbed unless I purchase an extra large pizza, but at Sy's the slices are so large and I am full off of two for a meal that goes for about $6. Also, the pizza here is so good. It comes out of that beautiful oven way too hot for me everytime and I knowingly subject my mouth to burns because the taste is worth it. Not sure why this pizza rates so high. When I eat it I get a Sbarro type of feeling and I'm not even carrying all my girlfriend's bags! I'm sure if you put a Sbarro pizza in here and sold it, people wouldn't know the difference. Of course a plus is that they sell pizza by the slice. It definitely comes off as a New York pizza place though. Dirty and rough around the edges, that's what I remember about NYC. Sy's is pretty much the only place around Eugene to get pizza by the slice somewhat resembling what you may see in New York or San Francisco. They have garlic knots also, which are good but pace yourself because the pizza is better. In my experience the best options here are pepperoni, then either cheese or olive. They grind up black olives and put them on the top with a great texture. It is basically coated with olive. I didn't even like olives, but this made me give them another shot and now I eat olives. I love all of my late-night food joints around campus and could not be more grateful for them! Sy's Pizza just around the corner from school. I love that you can pick your toppings, although I find it a little pricey at $0.80 per topping. They do pile on the toppings, and the thin crust pizza does NOT disappoint! I get the Neapolitan slice, which everyone says is the better of the two pizza choices. The Boyfriend and I pick up the garlic knots, too. They're little bites of delight...real garlic-y and surprisingly sweet. I wish the garlic to bread ratio was a little even out, though. If you can overlook the tiny dining area (counters and short stools only, no tables indoors), grubby surroundings, conventional ingredients, and loose adherence to food handler's guidelines, then one can admit, Sy's does pump out some decent pizza. Fresh dough, better than average tomato sauce, standard toppings, and a good oven (though not wood-burning) gives the New York style crust a decent balance of crunchy and chewy. Fountain sodas are the primary beverage options. Good for lunch on campus as a couple of slices are relatively affordable. I find the individual slices are better than their whole pies, but this could be b/c I find their pizza a little heavy and I'm good after a slice or 2, tops. Less a star for witnessing, on more than one occasion, the counter staff/pizza cook handling money and preparing food without washing their hands. read more

Here's the deal. Sy's is a hole-in-the wall just off the UO campus that has been serving NY-style pizza by the slice since at least the late 1970s. They have cooked cheese pizzas waiting. You order the toppings you want and they add those as you order. The slices go back into the oven and back to you within minutes. The crust is crispy and the slices are great. read more

I am new to the Eugene area and wanted to get some pizza for dinner last night. A few of the places I looked at online looked OK but I was glad I chose this one. The sauce seem to be freshly made not jarred. And overall the pizza was good. When I came in to pick up the pizza they were very friendly and nice. This place accomplishes recreating a NY experience, by being exceptionally dirty. Avoid this place during busy times. I went once after class and had to wait in a line, which was fine, but there was only one cashier who was handling money and pizza at the same time. It's kind of small and it's weird to sit down right in front of a mirror to eat your pizza, and the pizza is actually pretty expensive, and although individual slices are pretty big, they're also pretty thin and not all that filling (though great for a light, quick meal). But I'll still go back from time to time to get a slice with black olives on it. The olives are chopped and they smother the slice with them. I really like it. This is not the best pizza in the world if you are searching for a thick slice gourmet pizza (although try By the Slice if you are ever in north Toronto). Although if you are a poor (or even if you have enough cash to take a swim in at night) starving student, craving a slice of something warm then this is one of the best pizzas ever. The pizza is very good (for thin New York style), the store looks as though it was ripped directly out of 90's NYC and the garlic naughts are amazing. The employees are usually very direct (not necessarily a bad thing) and the pizza is quick. What makes this the best pizza is that I can buy a slice with the change found at the bottom of my bag on a rainy day and I get something hot and tasty that fills me up. read more
