Located near the park with a great gift (and liquor) shop! I recommend booking your reservation via OpenTable to make sure you don't have to worry about a wait, bc this place is sure to have one! We had a beautiful view during our early evening dinner. The bar knows what they're doing, which is refreshing after a full day of hiking. Our server previously worked on a cruise line and the recommendations/presentation/care throughout our meal were all top notch. The beet salad will be my new craving, I'm sure of it. The tuna was prepared perfectly and arrived with exactly the right sides- incredible. My steak needed nothing... not even a knife! I'm a sucker for mashed potatoes and had more than my fair share. The steak was good, but it was not the best I've ever had. For the price I expected the best I've ever had. I also ordered a wedge salad. It too was good. Wait staff, host, and manager warther face masks properly and we're obviously ultra conscience of covid-19 safety. I give up. No more chances for switchback. Been dining on & off at switchback for over 15 years. Had some amazing meals there - and some below average. Last week was the last time. For perspective - Dining room maybe 1/2 full - so no pressure from a full house FYI - They're now charging $3 for what used to be complementary (very basic) bread service. Server was poorly trained - struggled to describe the specials with any detail and failed to note menu substitutions prior to our attempt to order. My date ordered the sea bass - and it was great. Zero complaints. I ordered the ribeye, my go to. Switchback touts this as "prime". I requested "some red". Server suggested "medium". Came out with ZERO color. So it was overcooked, and poorly seasoned. Asparagus was inconsistent in size leading to different taste / texture. Thin and wimpy. No seasoning/butter noticed. Just dry and stringy. For years - These guys used to have the thickest asparagus I'd ever seen. I ordered the "shake" for dessert. Came out 10 MINUTES after my dates dessert. No exaggeration- it was chocolate milk. Not a shake. I think they must have been out of ice cream and didn't want to tell me. No joke - chocolate milk. A far cry from "extra thick" as promised. And no - I did not tell my server or the manager. The server didn't check in with us until end of the meal. Too late to start over. And I saw a manager - she did table checks at every single table. Except ours . Like i mentioned - we have given this place way too many chances. The food, service and overall experience at switchback is too inconsistent for me to gamble eating there again. I'm so glad we went here. The service was quick and the food was delicious. We got crab cakes and fresh berry salad for appetizers. The crab cakes were loaded with crab and not too much filling, AMAZING. The berry salad was filled with fresh fruits. For entrees we both got Manhattan steaks, one cut of the day and one regular. Both steaks came out perfectly medium rare. The waiter had us check it to our liking. We got sides of mashed potatoes and creamed corn. Both were well seasoned and delicious. She did not greet us, when I said hello she look offended and then had us wait another 10 minutes before she would seat us even when we had a reservation. We got stuck in a back corner when the dining room was empty, and wouldn't seat us elsewhere but other than that the experience as quite nice. The rest of the staff was great and the food was delicious! They have really creative dishes and huge portions. We ordered the chicken, the ribs and the meatloaf and all were amazing!! The tables are nicely separated and they also have different tables where you can bring 6-8 people or 4 people to just two people. Service was great we had one mistake it was one of us didn't get are soup but it was alright we canceled it and ended up eating are main dish. It's probably good to eat there when it's not so packed we got there around 6:30 before the dinner rush came in. Let's talk about the food the food was really really good special this bacon appetizer we had talk about flavor and melts in your mouth. Are table ordered 2 ribeyes, NY strip, & spaghetti with buffalo meatballs oh and the bacon appetizer is called thick cut bacon. I ordered my ribeye rare and it came out perfect seasoning was also good I didn't have to salt it or ask for A1 sauce. My parents got the NY strip n Ribeye they also said there steaks came out good I can tell cause they almost took out 90% of there food. My wife got the spaghetti with buffalo meatballs meatballs was very good I got to taste it spaghetti was good and also a big portion cause my wife got full and there was still a lot left. My wife originally wanted crown rack of baby back pork ribs but they were all out so I'm assuming call ahead of time to see if they have it in if your going there for the ribs. The window advertising outside said steaks, burgers, rice bowls, etc. - when we walked in we were told that we may not get a table because we didn't have a reservation (but they weren't required). There was only two tables seated with 3/4 of the restaurant visibly open. We ordered the "bread service" appetizer which was appalling. It was supposed to come with three sauces, came with two (balsamic dressing from a grocery store bottle, and what seemed like canned Alfredo sauce). The baguette had obviously been frozen and was very tough and dry. We ordered their vegetable selection which was advertised as a cauliflower steak, roasted potatoes and vegetables with mint yogurt sauce. It was a wet, boiled half head of cauliflower, two small sprigs of broccolini and two small potatoes cut in half. Their creamed corn was frozen corn in their "Alfredo" sauce that also came with the bread. It was $50 with no drinks, one appetizer, one entree to share and a side of corn ($9 on its own). No worth it for the price. The older host gentleman seemed like he had something better to do while the restaurant was basically empty however, our server was very attentive. The Rib plate was over cooked and drowned in BBQ sauce. The Salmon special was hit and miss. The Salmon itself was actually pretty good however, it was listed as it being served with broccolini but it came with asparagus which was Luke warm like the 3 bite size potatoes there the salmon was paired with. Our server did bring us a side of broccolini for our individual who didn't like the surprise asparagus. The menu is pretty extensive and offers a wide variety of fish, steak, chicken and even some unique items like bacon wrapped meatloaf! The steaks looked very big and didn't come with any sides. All of the sides were a la carte ($6-10/each). That sort of steered our family away from ordering any steak entrees. All the items we did order, the trout, pork medallions, chicken, salmon all came with sides of grilled vegetables, creamed corn or mashed potatoes. Definitely more value for these items. My chicken was stuffed with spinach, mushrooms and came with a delicious sauce ($27). It was also on a bed of grilled vegetables. Although the chicken was small, it was stuffed and made it heavy and filled me up! For dessert we ordered the chocolate banana bread pudding and crème Brule. The crème Brule was light and delicious! I think overall, this place is very good just overpriced. I know our family didn't try any of their steaks, but the items we did order seemed very similar to items at the Spotted Dog Café menu which is much less $$$. read more

Extremely overpriced for poor service and only decent food. Everything came out slowly. Appetizers came out one at a time. After sitting at the table for an hour (I wish I were exaggerating) our entrees and the family-style sides came out, but they forgot one of our sides. The steak I ordered as medium rare came out well done, and though it was offered to have a new steak come out, I wasn't confident I could wait for another entrée. Some one else was paying the bill or I would've been more invested in getting proper service. The restaurant wasn't full, and we were a larger group of 8 guests, so I do try and keep that in mind when assessing service, but it was an hour and forty-five minutes until our meal was done (that extra side that was forgotten initially finally came out and we passed it around), and I had to leave but the rest of the party stayed for desserts (which the waitress hadn't even started to bring up to the table before I left). For the prices they charge, I one hundred percent DO NOT recommend. When paying $60 for an entree, it should be mouthwatering food. It's a fancier, more upscale restaurant. I thought I was going to be underdressed. Thankfully, I wasn't. There were plenty of people at the restaurant who were wearing jeans and a hoodie. I solo dined at the bar. They were mindful of COVID guidelines and placed me four chairs away from a gentleman at the bar. The waitstaff, from the bartender to the waiters, were very friendly. I ordered the house cabernet and merlot. I'm not a wine connoisseur, so I can't get into the notes and textures and whatnot, but the wine was tasty. A waiter brought out some bread with a balsamic vinaigrette-like sauce; it was a bit acidic but delicious, nonetheless. For my appetizer, I ordered the clam chowder, which was so good! 4/5 I decided on the Dover Sole for my entree and wasn't disappointed. The sole was stuffed with crab meat, so I didn't get much flavor from the fish itself. I love garlic EVERYTHING, so the garlic mash and minced garlic spinach were a nice touch. I ordered the petite filet with 2 vegetable sides. The steak was decent, not the best quality buy cooked the way I requested (medium rare). The plating was a bit off, the roasted pepper and fresh rosemary sprig seemed as a bit of an after thought not really lending much to the dish. For a steakhouse, I feel like there is much room for improvement on the menu. Seeing as how you're in a tourist rich location, you'd expect to get some very high quality dishes. The staff seemed a bit on edge as well. The drink menu had basic drinks you'd find at a regular bar, nothing special about this either. The Caesar came with with a fresh anchovie which I really appreciate. I could have gone for more but the salad was crisp and fresh. I was a little concerned at first, the scallops came bacon wrapped but the chef managed to get the bacon crispy yet the scallops perfectly cooked and tender. That is a deft hand. I will say for a supposedly high end restaurant (prices are higher than in some top NYC restaurants), the service we received by our waiter was unexpected. Waiter had a very condescending tone when questioned about a food item we received. He couldn't handle the situation himself so he passed it off to the manager who thankfully handled the situation with dignity, poise, and understanding as a true restaurant professional should. Isn't handling customer inquiries in hospitality training 101? I don't understand why these restaurants try to give the impression that they are Michelin star restaurants. It is what it is: dining establishment with a better than average cuisine (notice I didn't say exceptional) opened next to the entrance of the national park and they have a gift shop with overpriced typical souvenirs right across the hall. He not only provided us with exceptional service but he also got us in touch with their wedding/event planner regarding questions we had about there different venues and she also answered everything we needed. Lastly, I've read the other reviews but my steak was banging! We had filets and they legit melted in both of our mouths! (Medium cook) Definitely would go back! We had dinner here after doing The Narrows. We stayed at the Springdale Suites and the shuttle stop for our hotel was very close, literally just a few steps away. We were dressed in hiking clothes with backpacks and walking sticks and I was a bit worried if the restaurant would let us in bc of our very casual dress... but they seated us quickly and without judgment. Prob a place to make reservations, we were lucky to get a table. It's very pretty inside, typical steakhouse decor. Wait staff was excellent. We were starving and ordered two apps (bacon wrapped scallops and burrata) and steaks. I should have gotten the Branzino special, in hindsight. The steak was nothing special. A la carte sides, we got mushrooms and mashed potatoes. Had a glass of wine. They had a dinner reception for 'U' alumni, I believe. And there was a tour group from the Philippines dining that nite. The first issue was the horrible service. It took a good while to be offered water or a server to attend to us. The bread offered the table was quick placed there without a word or greeting. When I ordered a whiskey with a large cube... they said they had it and didn't. Then when I asked for extra ice... the server brought some to the table in a PLATE!! I had to politely ask it be bought back in a proper glass. (The bad was also out of bitters.) I ordered the special cut which was bison. It was okay at best. The sides were horrible. With over 30 items on the breakfast menu, how can anyone complain. Omelette stations, bacon, hot food, french toast, pancakes, bacon, fresh fruit, canned fruit, yogurt, cereal bar, coffee, tea, juices, they had everything. The BACON was amazing. My only tip to you is leave ample time between breakfast and your hike so you can evacuate your bowels leisurely. read more
