The food, service, and setting, are all spectacular by far the best place to eat in the Zion National Park area.

Whiptail Grill is an awesome find just outside Zion National Park in Springdale. Set in an old gas station, it has a cool, casual vibe that fits the canyon setting perfectly. We started with the trio chips, and everyone raved about the queso. Portions were more than enough for our group of five. I ordered the homemade chicken tamales and Mexican street corn, and both were delicious. Someone else got the pork quesadilla, which came in a super large portion. I drove all the way from Los Angeles because of the great Yelp reviews, expecting an amazing meal. That turned out to be my biggest mistake. I ordered the BBQ Bacon Burger and the Carne Asada Taco Plate. The burger was clearly made long before it was served and had been sitting under a warmer for far too long. The bun and patty were dry, and the sauce was so ordinary that I honestly would have preferred a burger from McDonald's. The carne asada tacos were even worse. The meat wasn't seasoned at all, and there were far too many large chunks of fat, making it unpleasant to chew. It tasted like it was made by someone who doesn't even know the basics of making tacos. I asked for some hot sauce, and later noticed they had charged me an extra $2 for it. When I asked why, the employee (or maybe the owner) simply said, "If you don't want it, I'll take it off." That wasn't the point. I could have paid the $2 without any problem, but the attitude was rude and unprofessional, and honestly disgusting. If you're going to serve tacos, at least learn the basics. I'd suggest taking a trip to Los Angeles and learning how real tacos are made. While you're there, maybe stop by McDonald's and see how they make a better burger, too. The food was a huge disappointment and completely failed to live up to the Yelp ratings. My trip to Zion National Park didn't start well because of this meal, but thankfully the sunset was beautiful enough to make me forget about this terrible dining experience. read more

We were looking for a restaurant open late, and we stumbled on a total gem. The whiptail grill was perfect. The hostess greeted us with a warm smile and Jesus was ready for our drink order as soon as we sat in the beautiful courtyard looking out at Zion National Park. We had the stuffed peppers, we ordered it with chicken which we were surprised was not in the pepper, but not to worry it was amazing. We came here in our most recent Zion National Park visit and it was definitely 3 stars for service, maybe 3.5 stars for food. It was so hard to get the servers' attention and they hardly came around to the patio tables. We got the kids a quesadilla with rice and refried beans and I got the skirt steak taco dish with black beans. The way the kids plate was plated was not at all kid friendly, smearing the refried beans artistically on a flat plate made it impossible for the toddlers to try to scoop up to eat. Our server, Caesar, was really great and genuinely enhanced our experience. While the food itself was just okay, the warm hospitality from all the staff was refreshing compared to other local spots we've tried, and that alone made a difference. I have a pretty high standard for Mexican food, so I wasn't blown away -- but I also wasn't disappointed. Portions were very generous, especially the chips and salsa. Drink-wise, the Manhattan was nice and strong, and the fresh raspberry lemonade was amazing. For food, the carne asada tacos were my favorite -- well seasoned and not your usual asada, but very tasty. I'd definitely recommend the carne over the chicken tacos. The chicken tacos were fajita-style, but I think the chicken could've used a little more seasoning. The black beans were fine, but I preferred the refried beans (also great for dipping!). The rice was a bit bland in my opinion. I'm used to LA tacos with bold flavors, so the seasoning here felt more mild -- which makes sense given the diverse crowd of tourists visiting Zion from all over the world. Best place we ate at during our stay! We were warmly greeted by the host and all the food we ordered was a hit! Service was insanely fast, less than 10min wait for food and it came out piping hot! Their shrimp tacos were BOMB, generous and perfectly cooked shrimp topped with chipotle aioli on freshly made corn tortillas. Their burger was so juicy and brioche bun made all the difference! Definitely pay the extra $1 for their side of sweet potato fries! This place was as good as the Mexican food we would get in California! Also their servers are the nicest people! One of them offered to take our group's photo. We had eaten at Oscar's Cafe the night before and were very underwhelmed by their food and service. So glad we found this gem of a place!! read more

I was talking to a local and asked for a recommendation for wings. She recommended Whiptail Grill. When we got to Whiptail, I realized it was a Mexican restaurant. I was a little apprehensive because I know authentic Mexican food. I did not expect to find authentic Mexican food in Utah. With that expectation set, I was still a little let down. The Chile Relleno was great. I chose to add a protein (steak). I was disappointed to see the Chile Relleno come out with the steak on the side. The rice was very bland, could have been seasoned more. The salsa is a very basic tomato salsa. Which is great for the average public. Our server, Cesar did bring out a spicer salsa. It definitely exceeded my expectations and glad they do have a spicer option. The wings were wings. Nothing to write home about. Frank's red hot, normal wings. Went here with friends for dinner on a Friday night. It was pretty packed but our group of 6 was seated right away. Looks like an old gas station converted to a restaurant which was fun. I liked that there were a couple of options that I could have made vegan, but would be nice to have a vegan entree. Just got done hiking in Zion and was so excited to sit down to eat here. I ordered a chicken burrito with black beans and rice. Even though, I was famished - I was only able to choke down a couple bites because the chicken in the burrito was clearly microwaved frozen chunks and the black beans were poured out from a can and not drained at all so they were poured into a bowl like a black bean lagoon. The rice was really the only decent thing. There were lots of options to stop at and I had higher hopes, but this will not be my stop here again. read more

Okay- I think it's worth noting PARTIES OF 5 or more will be charged 18% gratuity... but where they get you... is when they bring you the bill they neglect to tell you this and they don't give you a tangible receipt, instead you have to scroll through a kiosk that has a screen about 1/2 the size of an iPhone screen. So I didn't see the 18%, I would've tipped 20%, because service was great. Instead I tipped 18% then another 20%. When I asked why the bill was so high our waiter said he would print out a receipt. Then I saw the almost $70 tip total!?!? The waiter rectified the situation but if I hadn't of asked, I feel like I would've been swindled. Food had mixed reviews- I had the Goat Cheese Chile Relleno which was Outstanding! Others in my party had the burger (it was Ho-hum... but what do you expect from a Mexican restaurant?) Another had the dinner salad. It was pretty traditional. Last one in my group had the Sweet Pork Tacos. There were ALOT of onions on this one and 2 tacos were fully loaded. I'm amazed that along with the rice and beans the plate was cleared. It was a lot of food. Taste was good. For apps- we got the trio. Which was a good deal of dips but certainly not enough chips for the dips. So we ended up ordering extra chips. You'd think you'd get enough chips to equal out the amount of dips. When we walked up at 5:00 with a party of 5, they did not have a table large enough inside to accommodate our group so we had to eat outside. It was so windy, the chips in the basket were flying out of the basket. The menu went flying all over the table and we couldn't keep our napkins on our laps. Overall we had some hurdles but the food was quality. Stopped in for dinner after a long day of hiking. The staff is pleasant and very efficient. We started off with the trio appetizer which consisted of salsa, guacamole, and queso. All three items were done very nicely and had a lot of flavor! To complement our appetizers, we had a spicy margarita as well as a house margarita. Both very tasty. For dinner, I had the chicken burrito in my partner had the goat cheese, Chile Riano. The diced chicken in my burrito could benefit from some additional seasoning however it's mixed with a lot of ingredients providing the much-needed flavor. The servers are upbeat and high-energy. The Mexican food is affordable given the competitive location. I had the chicken tacos, served in blue corn tortilla shells, with generous pico and grilled veggies. The plate in the picture is a large platter, and the serving is generous. I had mine with "Fire" sauce, which lived up to the name. It is quite spicy (which I was warned about), and I proceeded. I would liken it to Thai hot...about as hot as I would want for a full meal. The restaurant is in a refurbished Texaco filling station of a bygone era. It is a cool spot and it has a unique charm. The whole staff is attentive and welcoming. I'm really torn about this place... here are my pros and cons that made me split my stars down the middle: Pros: the taste of most of the food is soooo good! I got the chips and queso and that queso was sooo good. But the salsa that also came with it was just not special at all. We got the carne asada burrito and they wouldn't do half and half meat and so we got an extra portion of chicken. Both had really great flavor. The burrito was a tiny spicy for me so I also got a side of sour cream and that made it perfect. Cons: it was waaay to expensive, and the portion was also way too big. The burrito was almost $30 and we had half leftover. When you're on vacation, managing leftovers sucks. They need to cut the portions to half the size, and also cut the price in half. More than $20 for a burrito is stupid. The pricing almost feels exploitive. The chips and queso was $12. And the side of chicken (while was a decent amount) was $8. Seriously the burrito was huge and together my husband and I couldn't eat it all. When we go to the restaurant, it's our preference to both order our own entree and then share both. This place was way too expensive per entree and way too much food in the portion to do that. So I will most likely not be going back unless that changes. Side note: we went in September on the hiking shoulder season. As we sat down the waiter for our area came over to us and complained that it was too busy and also complained that a table of 13 people asked to each have their own check. That was pretty ungrateful since he got a mandatory 18% tip from each of them when each check was surely atleast $30 per person. So he made like more than $50 in tips in that hour, and then turned around and complained to use about it the moment we sat down. read more

stopped in and wow, everything we ordered was so good! Started with the queso and chips - creamy, flavorful, and the perfect amount of kick. It disappeared way too fast. The shrimp tacos were fresh, juicy, and packed with flavor - perfectly seasoned shrimp with great toppings and that soft tortilla that holds it all together without falling apart. Highly recommend! Then the coconut shrimp - crispy on the outside, tender inside, with that sweet coconut flavor that pairs amazingly with the dipping sauce. Such a tasty twist. But the star for me was the chimichurri ribeye steak - cooked just right, super tender, and the chimichurri sauce brought bright, herby freshness that cut through the richness perfectly. One of the best steaks I've had in a casual spot like this. Everything felt fresh and housemade, portions were generous, and the vibe is chill and welcoming. If you're in the area (or making a trip!), do yourself a favor and hit up Whiptail Grill. We'll definitely be back next time we're around - craving that chimichurri ribeye already! We tried the strawberry jalapeño margarita and the Canyon Mule, and both were fantastic. We started with chips, salsa, and guacamole--the chips were colorful and fun, which added a nice touch. The chicken taco with fire sauce was a standout; definitely go for the fire sauce if you enjoy some heat. We went to Whiptail Grill on our first day at Moab, before we went hiking. We arrived at around 5:20pm because we'd had a long travel day and were surprised to have to wait 25 minutes for our table. It turns out that they were short-staffed so while there were plenty of seats, there weren't enough servers. We ordered the brussel sprouts as a side, and I ordered the chicken enchiladas for my main entree. The brussel sprouts were delicious but definitely not very healthy. Server took a while longer to take our order. We wanted a standard burger- buns, meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and were able to order it as a build your own burger. Our other order was the carne asada tacos. After waiting a long while to receive our food, the burger came out as a lettuce wrap. They opted to serve the buns separately and have us assemble the burger ourselves, which was a mess with the lettuce being whole leaves. Taste was decent. Carne asada tacos were also okay. Beef was seasoned well with some pieces being chewier. Salsa served tasted like green enchilada sauce. And rice/beans were beyond bland. However, perfect place if you're starving. The stuffed avocado portion was just an avocado cut in half set on opposite sides of the plate with mixed greens in the middle. Nothing exciting there.
