I've been a Tpumps customer for years and have seen the location next door be a revolving door for misc. food spots over the years. Imagine my surprise when Sweet Fires opened and realizing it was the same owner who acquired it to try out hot pot/shaved ice!
I checked some of the not so great reviews, and something everyone should take into consideration- this is not full fledged hot pot. Going in, expecting that, is going to set you up for disappointment, and comparing it to full fledged hot pot isn't going to be a very good comparison. It's their quick service take on hot pot and it's pretty good bang for your buck. Those complaining about no flame/it not being legit hot pot, I'd suggest maybe checking reviews/pics, and Helen, seek therapy if some accidental plastic in your food made you cry. Mental health is important and yours is hinging on a piece of plastic. :(
You get to customize your dish and choose from the day's selections of teas/milk teas as the complimentary drink included with the meal. As others have stated- you get a little bit of an appetizer and a sample of shaved ice. They do tend to mix it up with appetizers and shaved ice flavors, so you may get something different here and there. First few times I went, it was bao with condensed milk, and now it's the potsticker/radish bun with their respective sauces. Shaved ice flavors always vary.
The servers and owner here are very gracious and helpful. I rarely have issues, but if something isn't to your liking, they'll remedy it the best they can. I had gotten beef in my soup one time and it just was not a great cut- super fatty. I was sorta meh about it, so they offered to bring some lamb since it was more lean- which worked out much better for me. I appreciated the suggestion!
They've also been tinkering with the menu a bit, so you can definitely try newer combos. I'm not a fan of fish cakes, and their original menu was mainly just soups with some meat and a lot of fish cakes. But then I saw they updated to a dumpling soup which is totally my jam, AND recently they added sausage as an option. The server didn't seem to be quite sure what kind of sausage it was, but I'd liken it to a similar flavor/texture of polish sausage. The flavor is good and neutral so it doesn't clash with all the flavors in the soup.
I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a good bang for their buck. Keep in mind, it is a more fast casual take on hot pot, so don't come in expecting your traditional hotpot place.
Things that have updated since some of the reviews mentioned- they do keep condiments on the tables now, so you have those options, as well as the servers offering a house sauce which is sesame based with garlic- it's pretty tasty.
I will tack on to what someone else noticed and it's the ingredient/allergen questions. If they could be a bit more knowledgeable with some of it, they'd be golden.
One of these days, I'll have to pop in for shaved ice. I'm usually getting my sweet fix from boba, so taking on an entire shaved ice dish hasn't been attempted yet. read more
