It has two kinds of soup base: Beef Bone soup and Sweetie Tomato Soup. I like beef bone soup the most. There are five kinds of spiciness to choose from. My favorite is Crazy. I also occasionally eat Sweetie Tomato Soup. It's sweet and sour. I like it very much! I heard that the beef bone soup is really made of beef bones. 12.99/pound is the cheapest among these spicy hot pots! If you pay more than 20 before the tax, you will get a bowl of rice if you need. The rice is really delicious It tastes much better than my own steamed rice at home. The fried skewers are all in the refrigerator. You need to take them to the clerk by yourself. That chicken skewer and beef skewer are super delicious! That fried sweet potato strip is also delicious. Be sure to eat it while it's hot. It's super bad when it's cold. Tucked away in a quiet plaza, this mala spot packs a ton of spice and high quality ingredients into a build your own bowl. The beef quality was the only hit or miss; when we came all that was available was really really fatty pieces of beef slices which isn't ideal. I love this place so much! Truly a gem, it's my favorite restaurant and I've never had one before! This is a cute cozy small business that sells amazing mala. I always order the same thing: tomato soup and sweet potato fries. They are always nice and even with a lot of people coming in, the service for a one man show is amazing. I'm a sucker for sauce and you better believe I have my dipping sauce all loaded up. I especially appreciate their packaging to go as well since I never finish my bowl so I get leftovers! I should start out by saying I make hotpot at home all the time and usually don't find it worth it to go out for hotpot. I'm also from the SGV so I have high standards for asian food. Since moving to Rancho a year ago, I haven't really found any great Chinese food places. This place met my standards! The broth flavor was fantastic and the price was also really good. Even though the ingredient bar was relatively small, they had a good variety of things and had everything I normally like in my hotpot. I will say that some of the meats weren't in fantastic condition -- the lamb, which is usually my hotpot meat of choice, had a lot of fat and was tough to chew. However, the spicy beef was REALLY good in flavor and tenderness. I was surprised to favor beef this time. The place was packed when we arrived at around 6:40 on a Friday night. There was one group in front of us in line. Despite the wait, they were very efficient at managing the time. They had us go pick out our ingredients before our table was bussed, so they could get us started while they used that time to clean our table. After ordering, the food was ready within 5-10 minutes. Dinning area are clean and there are cute signs for women/man's bathroom, which I found adorable. Beside the malatang, I also ordered beef and sausage skewers. To my taste, it's not that good. I will stick to the malatang next time. They also have high chairs available, so it's pretty kids friendly restaurants. One other thing that bothers me was there was a fruit fly and a black fly in the restaurant. Not sure if it's coming from outside or the kitchen. That kinda ruined the 5 Star experience. They have various types of noodles, meat, seafood, fish/meatballs, and vegetables but selection is smaller than other places I've tried. They have tofu skin, fried tofu, spam, 3 types of meat/fishballs. For meat, they have liver, sliced beef, pork, shrimp, mussels, squid, scallops, and tripe. They have lotus roots, bean sprouts, rice cakes, baby corn, bamboo, sliced potatoes, woodear mushrooms, and several types of greens. They have a tomato broth and beef broth with various heat levels. I chose to get a bowl of slices of spam, fishball, lotus roots, chrysanthemum leaves, bok choy, napa cabbage, bamboo, wide glass noodles, and quail eggs with medium heat beef broth. The wait time was not long, I used it to get the dipping sauces. They have sesame paste, sesame oil, chili oil, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, chopped garlic, chopped chili, and barbeque sauce. They also have a fridge of skewers that you give them to cook. They did have lamb skewers, sausage, sweet potato, and vegetables. The bowl came hot with plenty of broth, it did have a good amount of heat. I did not eat the broth much but got my toppings to dip into my sauce bowl. I forgot to ask if they sell bowls of rice alongside the hot pot or if they have a dry, broth-less version which I've tried at other malatang places. The "buffet" selection was fresh and plentiful! Lots to choose from and all presented so well. The customer service was great, since we had never been there we appreciated the instructions on how things worked. I chose the beef bone broth and although I like spicy I kept it mild so I can add more spice later at the sauce bar. I mixed sesame, chili, oyster, scallions and garlic together and it was delicious. My husband and I ate here for lunch today. They are located right next to Mr. Dumpling. We arrived as soon as they opened at 11:00am. There are plenty of indoor seating. Since it was our first time, we asked if they could explain to us how it worked. My husband got the tomato soup and I got the beef bone soup. My husband picked the udon noodle and l picked the thinner ramen style noodles. You pay by weight and our soups came out to about $17. They cook your creation in the kitchen in the back. We saw they had skewers in the fridge too so we picked a variety to try and an order of sweet potato fries. Our food didn't take long to come out. The skewers came out first. We are able to grab sauces and garnish with garlic, green onion, cilantro, chili, sugar, sesame oil, soy sauce etc. Our soups came out and the broth was so flavorful for both. The variety is pretty limited but does have all the basics for malatang. There is also a good selection of sauces to choose from. When I picked up the bowl to grab my veggies and meat, I could smell a nasty sweat smell coming from the bowls. I got this for takeout and the food was still piping hot when I got home. The beef was very chewy and fatty. I don't know if it would have tasted better if I ate there. The quail eggs were obviously canned and didn't taste fresh. The soup is the biggest problem. I've tried many malatang places before and their bone broth was literally just... bone broth? It almost tasted like powder from a can. I got spicy and it wasn't spicy at all.
