I was very impressed with Sweet Basil. I was told by many to go there and wasn't disappointed. The cocktails are very good with a very nice menu of unique drinks. The bartender can make many old style drinks such as a Sazerac or an Old Fashion which is always impressive to me. For starters, the Pork Raviolo is delicious. A lot of ingredients for a small dish, but it works. The Barramundi was well cooked and garnished well. You'll need to make reservations well ahead of your arrival or you may not get in. I called to try and change my reservation time... the woman on the phone offered 5pm. I did the mental math out loud to see what time we would have to stop skiing in order for 5 of us (including 3 kids) to go back to hotel, shower, and make it to the restaurant on time. Her response was "I don't give a fuck about your shower schedule ." I was completely dumbfounded. When I said "excuse me?" She immediately hung up on me. I called back multiple times and she refused to answer the phone. I eventually waited and called back later... the manager Nick answered the phone. I relayed what happened, and he appeared sympathetic. He promised to look into it and call me back, however he either forgot or just didn't care. I never heard a thing back from him. Unfortunately, we were forced to use our original reservation as much as I didn't want to lose the $125 deposit. Despite making the reservation way in advance we were stuck in the front bar area where it was so loud we couldn't even talk to each other without shouting. The food was very average (definitely not worth the price), but our server was nice. All in all, the lousy customer service made this very unenjoyable. This is literally only the second negative yelp review I have ever written in five years I have been on the site. I'm not a complainer but I feel like I need to let people know to avoid this place! read more

You have to eat here! One of the best restaurants I have ever tried. Their drink specials are amazingly, but their food is to die for. We did not order one thing that wasn't absolutely delicious. Really recommend trying the whipped feta appetizer even if you think you don't like feta cheese. It comes in a balloon type bread thing that you have to break in order to get to the cheese and it's so good. Out of 4 people, who all ordered different things, not one of us walked away not feeling wowed. It was just so good. Also loved my drink, The Bid Bang, ingredients sounded strange but I went for it anyway and it was great. Service was amazing as well. Highly recommend this restaurant. read more

The Best Restaurant in Vail just got better! It is always a special night to go to Sweet Basil. They have added "The Sweet Basil Experience". This is an amazing chefs choice dinner. This is very nice place to have a meal in Vail. We went here for lunch. the atmosphere is very sophisticated, and the service was very good, although a little stuffy. I had the onion soup and lamb skewers. The onion soup is not traditional with baked cheese on top, but it did have a cheese filled onion ring they pour the soup over. It has some very nice well integrated flavors. The basil, olive oil, and garlic covered lamb skewers came with humus, and pita bread. These were very tasty, but they could have been a bit warmer. My wife had the duck confit over Pappardelle pasta, with slices of Parmesan cheese. This dish was excellent. The duck confit had a bit of cinnamon, and with some soft of spicy kick. Pricing on lunch was very reasonable for the area. I believe the prices go up quite a bit for dinner. A very nice lunch. read more

We ate here Saturday night. I highly recommend the toffee pudding cake-I found it to be sweet and decadent, and it hit the spot after walking around Vail for two hours in the freezing cold. We ordered oysters as an appetizer and they were delicious. On the waiter's suggestion (he was very helpful and friendly) I ordered the pork. Though he was right about it being tasty, as I got halfway through there were huge veins of fat and ligament that I had to cut around. So I paid $37 for a half edible piece of meat. Celebrating our honeymoon in Vail and a local recommended this place. We have been in Town 3 days and this is our second time at Sweet Basil. Dinner was amazing, the pork belly dish was to die for. For lunch we had the Caesar salad A+ and the Huli Huli chicekm sándwich also to die for. The best was the servers, Melissa at the bar so sweet and willing to make our experience amazing. However, being in Vail, and looking slightly bedraggled, I was fully expecting my wishes would not be met. Thank God we walked into Sweet Basil. Aside from the splendid meal (steelhead, lamb t-bone, scallops, asparagus) it was the service that separates Sweet Basil from the wannabes. Monday night dinner with my father and adult son before end of our vacation. My 2nd time to eat here. One of the best spots in the area. A little fancier than most. My dad had lamb T bones and my son and I split the 28oz ribeye. It was huge, came pre sliced in 6-7 vertical pieces with fried onions and Blu Cheese on top with tiny roasted potatoes under it. Maybe a little too rare for me but my son likes it that way. I could tell my son was put off by the Ahi tuna, wagyu, rabbit, ceviche, pate and oysters... so I bailed on something interesting to share with him. Excellent Chateauneuf de Pope. Followed up with Sticky Toffee Pudding and the cookies to share. Service and food was excellent, maybe a little loud for my dad's hearing aids. We have gone to Sweet Basil once a year for almost 30 years. We were celebrating a birthday tonight that was almost ruined by the rude bartender arguing with my birthday daughter about the waitlist for the bar. We were seated and there was no acknowledgement of her waiting with her husband. She or we would have signed up for a seat at the bar if we had been instructed how to do so. This is the first time we have experienced such rudeness at our favorite restaurant. I would recommend a better system for those waiting to sit at a table. I would also mention that my chicken dish at the table was dry and hard to cut and chew. I hope things improve since we have never experienced anything but excellence at Sweet Basil. However, we will not be back anytime soon and will not recommend to others. Sad. read more

Excellent creative food in a fun, friendly atmosphere. Upscale, intriguing food with a chef who knows what s/he's doing! Our server Ben could not have been more friendly or fun, although the did forget our mushroom side - he apologized, said he should have been more on top of it, but... Everyone told us that this is one of the best restaurants in Vail - we agree. Pricing for what you get seems in line. The Ahi Tuna Crudo and the Seared Salmon Tataki were artfully designed and substantial plates. We followed that with the Ahi Tuna (we love tuna) and the Pacific Cod. Again, we found substantial plates with inspired combinations of ingredients, although the bok choi with the Cod was slightly overcooked. We shared the chocolate fudge dessert - it was really great - creamy and thick. I don't usually order dessert but my friend does, and I was glad that I had the extra spoon. I should start by saying one of my best friends is the head pastry chef so I'm might be a little bias. It was by far one of the most memorable meals of my life. Their menu changes frequently so I don't want to get you excited about a dish they may or may not have but their really wasn't anything that we had that even fell below average. It all was great or amazing. I really don't think you could go wrong with any selection you make. The only complaint I could come up with is the location of the bar right by the front door. Great food, loved the salmon tartar!!! I'm not a huge sushi fan but that salmon tar tar was amazing. My husband had the warm apple and beet salad (nowhere near the tartar but still very good) and we had the ahi tuna and NY steak as entrees. The ahi was yummy but the steak had too much BBQ sauce on it that it was a bit overwhelming. If I had had the BBQ sauce on the side it would have been great! The toffee sticky cake w vanilla ice cream on the side as a dessert was awesome. All in all, if you are in Vail you should check this place out read more

You HAVE TO eat here. This is tied with another restaurant in Vail as my #1 restaurant in the US. The service is beyond great. The servers are extremely professional yet so easy to talk to, and very casual/friendly when discussing skiing and non-menu things. The food is perfect. I was in awe at how much better than expected it was. I had the duck breast entree, sweetbreads app (EXCELLENT!!!) and basil ice cream with cake, graham crackers, and pomegranate. We also had a red wine that I can't remember (Malbec, maybe?). The crowd here is great, the atmosphere is very comfortable. Highly recommended! Sweet Basil has been on our bucket list for a while now and we finally checked it off. The food was out of this world and has incredible flavors and presentation! We ordered the Hawaiian Marlin Tartare for our appetizer, the flavors and textures were amazing! I ordered the Sugar Pumpkin Risotto and my boyfriend ordered the Roasted Barramundi. Everything is put together beautifully and the portion sizes are perfect. The ambiance and staff also add to the experience. So let me start by saying that I hate to write this review because I've always loved Sweet Basil. I've been eating there since the early 90's and have always had Great Meals there. Furthermore as local to this valley I have crossed paths with the Morgan's who are absolutely lovely people and terrific members of this community. so hopefully they see this review and act on it. My party was at Sweet Basil for a 7:45 reservation on last Wednesday evening. Our server was less than a pro and the service was lacking, but with the crowds in town and the difficulty everyone in town is having with respect to staffing that really didn't upset me. However the food did. I ordered Crispy Chicken Torchon. It arrived luke warm at best and not one thing on the plate was in the least bit crispy. I've been served better meals on airplanes...in coach!!! My advice would be to take that item off of your menu!!! Or at very least get an expeditor on your line that is smart enough not to put a $38 chicken entree with, perhaps formerly crispy skin, that now has skin that can only be described as " Snotty". I probably should have sent it back but at that point it was 9:30 and I was really hungry. In conclusion I would say I'll try again because I think this was indeed an anomaly. But whatever you do don't order the chicken. read more

Last night my husband and I had the terrible misfortune of dining at Sweet Basil behind a loud, crude, rude, raucious, nasty, argumentative group of men and one woman whose every other word was F#$*! One of the men was actually screaming regularly!!! Everyone in our section was negatively affected by this group. Another couple who got seated beside us demanded that they get moved. By the end of our meal, my husband and I got up from the table and moved to the bar to finish our wine and ask for the check as we could no longer tolerate the obsenities . We shared our experience with the waiter, manager, and host. They acknowledged the problem and the manager offerered only a half-hearted apology. I do not understand why this group was not asked to quiet down, leave, or why the police were not called in?? For the prices you charge for your food and drinks, you should have offered everyone a discount for having to live this experience! What a poor reflection on the part of management!!! We will never be back and will tell everyone we know not to go there-PERIOD! Shame on the management at Sweet Basil. read more

Let me first start by saying, MARTINIS. The martinis here are great. Classic, dirty, cold, served up. I wanted several but knew I should stop at two! We came here for our anniversary dinner. I would suggest doing a special occasion because it is pricey. That being said, you get what you pay for. Service was great, and food was awesome. We did the Oregan wine suggested by the server. It was a Pinot Noir, light and earthy. Perfect for a less pricey bottle of wine, but great flavor. We then ordered the bruscetta and it was incredible! I had never had it the way it was prepared and Ive had it a lot of times. It was warm with the bread and cheese but cold with the tomatoes and basil. LOVED IT! Must try! Our neighbors had the tomato tower and told us it was good as well. I would suggest one or the other because it might be too much tomato for appetizers. The entrees came out in good time, on a hot plate, perfect temperature. I had the Seafood Linguini, a long time favorite, and referenced by the server. I liked it, but I didn't love it. I am a fan of all of those ingredients but it was really salty, and almost too thick for the pasta. I felt the sauce took over the plate and wasnt as balanced as it could be. I feel like this could just be by chance but our neighbors next to us changed their order to the Halibut because of it. My boyfriend had the pork and it was stunning! I had never tried it in the way it was prepared but it was amazing. Very tender and great portion. I would most likely order this again. We ended with an espresso and it was a great meal! Overall I was happy with everything but the Linguini.. The only other note to add was that it was WARM where we were seated, they had to creak the window open to air out the place. Once they did that, us, and our two neighbors were great! We had the opportunity to chat with both sides which was lovely! Might have to return and try something else on the menu! read more
