Sometimes one person can ruin a great thing and make you mad enough to never eat there again...such is the case here. My husband and I ordered through Postmates and discovered what we thought was a gem in Simi Valley. I ordered the Miner's Sandwich minus the mushrooms and with mozzarella cheese...it was worth every penny of the $16 price. My daughter and husband ordered the filet and they were cooked perfectly. We had the soup and stuffed potato as our sides and the clam chowder was apparently so good my husband waited all week until they offered it again (it's a weekend option) and we ordered another round JUST for the soup! Postmates didn't offer a "bowl" in their ordering section but they do have a section where you can tell them of an item not listed, put in how much you are willing to pay and so that is what I did...and put $12 as I assumed that would be more than enough. Here we go...Postmates was great. They called to make sure they understood the order (we had ordered two more times in one week btw because I liked the sandwich so much) and the order went in. When it arrived my husband went right for the soup he had waited for all week. There were 3 containers (16oz styrofoam cups) of the soup. Two were sides with our meals and one was to be the $12 BOWL I ordered. All three cups were about half full and needless to say we had an unhappy camper! Every order of side soup up to this point was filled up to an inch from the top and that included the French onion soup from the orders during the week. I decided to call because surely they would want to make this right....right? WRONG!!! I called and the pleasant girl who answered put Lydia on the phone. I don't know if Lydia is the owner or manager or what, but she was probably the worst at customer service I have EVER EXPERIENCED! I told her the issue and I also explained how often we've ordered lately. Lydia told me the following...she prepared the soup HERSELF and she put one ladle of soup in each cup and even made it a BIG ladle scoop because of the special request for the bowl of soup. She said the other times our soup cups were full was the mistake, NOT TODAY (So the times we were satisfied were never supposed to happen I guess!). Her voice and inflection was absolutely dismissive and bordered on combative, there was no apology or resolution. It was "BLAME whoever gave us too much and HOW DARE WE expect consistency because we now want too much". I hung up absolutely mad and have vowed to never eat there again because of LYDIA. Then I opened my sandwich hahahahahahahaha! This I would've forgiven with a phone call the next time but there won't be one now RIGHT LYDIA? I am adding a picture of my order where it clearly states the "no mushroom, very pink meat, and mozzarella cheese" that had come correct every time until now. They obviously saw it because there were No mushrooms...but there WAS ALSO no very pink meat and no mozzarella to be found. I also want to point out that they did go ahead and charge me the full $12 for the ladle of clam chowder . By the way, I am not someone who calls to complain because I'm looking for a freebie. Ok so we pulled up and it looked busy but I wanted to go. We waited 5 minutes, no biggy. They open at 4 and we got there at 6 Ordered appetizers and prime rib , saw many customers complain about whatever. Our bread came out cold and it was a large order, we ordered small order. Shrimp cocktail came out and it was great, One hour goes by and a different waitress comes over to the table and says" I'm soo sorry but we ran out of prime rib at 6pm. Why wouldn't the first waitress know this. They had the audacity to charge for the app and drinks , ok fine... bottom line , I will never go there again. Went today with my Dad for an early dinner. First time here. We lost my Mom a yr and a half ago so decided to come. Karen was our waitress and she gets 4 stars! Friendly and attentive. It's pretty dark in there but a nice vibe. I had the top sirloin and Australian lobster. They totally overcooked it. It was very chewy and bland. Steak was good, took the rest home with the zucchini. Dad had the 12 oz prime rib and said it was excellent. Karen brought us a free blackout cake since the lobster was overcooked. The garlic bread is to die for, and I'm not even a bread water. Perched in a strip mall next to a Wendy's you don't expect to find anything decent but Sutters Mill is definitely a hidden gem. I've been going to Sutters for many years, and tonight will be the LAST TIME. Service was terrible. I ordered a prime rib dinner, and salad. My dinner arrived and the meat was cold. Finally my waitress came back, I told her it was cold , and she took it back the kitchen. My dinner came back, and again it was cold, I even asked her to touch it to show her how cold it was. She took it back again. Several minutes later, she arrived with my dinner, and again it was cold. She never offered to get me a new dinner. I asked for my check. She came back, and the check was for the full amount?? I asked why there wasn't a discount, she replied, Ill ask the Mgr. She came back with a new check with a $5 discount ?? on a $50 meal, and was told by the waitress " you should order a Rib eye next time" I wanted to stop, and talk to the Mgr. but I decided this was my last Time at Sutter's !!! read more

This used to be my favorite restaurant. I went last night and see that they have jacked up the prices. My favorite meal went from $29 to $43....a 50% increase. I ordered it anyway and sat there for 15 minutes for the server to come back and tell me they didn't have it. It wasn't busy, there was 2 other tables occupied. The server gave me an insincere apology and blamed the staff in the kitchen for not writing what they were out of on the board. I was not offered anything for for the inconvenience. No manager came to do damage control. We had to wait another half hour for our food. On top of the ridiculous increase in prices they have changed their early dinner discount from 20% to 15% and have put a limitation on the meals you can get discounted. I've lived in Simi almost 18 years and kept meaning to try Sutter's, so tonight was our first. Arrived early and there wasn't a wait. Server was attentive and helpful. Ordered the prime rib dinner, that comes with a salad, green beans, and choice of potato, stuffed potato, French fries, or Mac and cheese. I had the stuffed potato. My son had the fries. Added the deep fried shrimp and garlic toast. The salads were fresh with romaine, tomatoes, and cucumbers and the blue cheese dressing was delicious! The garlic toast were 3 slices of sourdough bread cut in half. They had large pieces of garlic, and it was delicious as well. The meat came out a bit more rare than we like, we ordered medium, but it was still flavorful and tender. The horseradish sauce wasn't very strong. I wasn't a big fan of the stuffed potato, it had a strong sour cream taste and wasn't smooth, like mashed potatoes due to it being broiled on top. The green beans were overcooked and were okay, not great, I only ate a few forks full. The deep fried shrimp were very large and tasted good. Drinks were refilled and plates removed when finished. I asked if we could use the 20% off listed on Yelp and was told "no" even though we arrived before 5:00 pm. Overall, a great value and great service! read more

Sutters has been the only restaurant we've ordered from. They even did a special delivery to our home because of our situation. Besides being so gracious to us, the food is EXCELLENT & for now Affordable for us. We walk in around 8:00pm, we are greeted immediately, we get seated and our waitress comes over to get a drink order. We brought some wine, she opens the wine for us and found out later they do not charge Corkage fee!!! That right there it's the first reason why I would definitely go back. We asked if they bring out bread and she said "we usually do not" so I don't know if they only bring it out upon request or she didn't wanna just say no. We order some cheesy bread, and it was good. Although I would've loved some regular bread to dip in some oil and balsamic. But next time I'll ask. She opens our wine and of course it was amazing, brings out the cheesy bread! We order, I ordered the surf n turf, I was a little iffy about the house cut top sirloin, i ordered it MR and it was cooked perfectly, and I was very surprised on how tender it was, to tell you the truth it was lacking on flavor, but I added a little drawn butter, salt and pepper and it was great ( I believe you can ask for the steak to be extra seasoned). I ordered stuffed baked potato and it was good but not impressed. Next time I'll get the regular baked. The lobster was cooked perfectly and super flavorful. My wife ordered the Alaskan Halibut, capers on a lemon wine sauce, it was also great. She got green beans with it and all loved the green beans. Our friend got the Filet Mignon and it's was relatively small for the price, but it was very good (again lacking some flavor). But we all enjoyed our dinner. The decore is very classic, old school, but it's all very clean and the place doesn't smell like old people like most old school steakhouses do! It's very clean and very nice inside, I really love the way it's furnished and decorated. Dessert came, we ordered the Chocolate cake ala mode, oh lord, it was great! Overall I'd be going back! My husband and I had such a wonderful date tonight! The prime rib was delicious and our potatoes were yummy! We tried the cheese bread and enjoyed dipping the last pieces in our salad dressings! The wife and I finally made it to Sutter's Mill Restaurant and had a really great experience. We arrived for an early dinner at 430 and the restaurant had maybe 3-4 tables of people. It is a little dark inside but it was very clean and the booth was comfortable. Our waiter was a really nice guy and I wish I had asked his name. He was very friendly and super attentive, stopping by our table often to refill our drinks or to ask if we needed anything. The wife and I each ordered the house cut prime rib and baked potato and we both had the dinner salad. The prime rib was absolutely amazing! It was one of the best I have ever had and the wife agreed. Not sure how we've never been here as life long Simi residents, but after seeing the great reviews on Yelp, I knew I needed try it and was sure glad I did. I never like to bandwagon, and I like to form my own opinions. So when I saw the restaurant was catching a lot of flak, I came to find out for myself how it was. The food is overpriced and overcooked. We were another group of people whose food came out warm at best. Would tell you to think twice before coming here during Covid. We were told when we made reservations to wear a mask and arrive all together so as to limit exposure to the virus. However, I was very disappointed to see upon arriving no one who works at the restaurant wearing a mask, instead the masks were around their necks. Also, the waitress was very concerned about wearing gloves to pick up my plates/cups, but when it came to delivering to me my food, drinks, and silverware those same rules didn't apply and she used her bare hands. EUREKA! I've found it! Well, at least savory steaks in Simi Valley ;) And, we had such a PLEASANT DINING EXPERIENCE here as well! After spending an entertaining Veteran's Day @ the Ronald Reagan Library, we were all turning into hunger hulks and I was looking for something substantial to feed the fams. Having recently visited the actual Sutter's Mill in Northern California, this local eatery seemed like an interesting choice to reminisce and recap the day. It's about 10 minutes away from "The Library" with easy access from the 118fwy by exiting off Tapo Canyon Rd. The inner rustic motif helps associate the importance of Sutter's Mill to days past, as in the 1848 California gold rush. The main dining area has adequate lighting, but the outer surrounding booths are dimly lit & takes some getting use to, especially if you're coming in from the sun. A party that arrived after us even asked for flashlights so they could see the menu! Funny to watch the flashlights motion through the menu, looked like cat burglars searching for something to steal, hah! Ms. Marie was our waitress and she took care of us beautifully! We sampled a few menu items... *PRIME RIB - "THE NUGGET" ($39.95): 16 oz. prime rib, prepared medium, with a side of sautéed garlic green beans. No question where the beef is here! That is a CHUNK OF MEAT! Tasty, tender, and not overly marbled... this was well prepared despite the thickness. Every bite was delicious! Horseradish was a little timid, but that's a minor complaint. The side of green beans were warm & crisp with a hint of garlic. This was thoroughly enjoyed. *PETITE RIBEYE ($28.95): 9 oz. Ribeye, prepared medium, accompanied with the popular stuffed baked potato. Wifey was very happy with her order, especially that stuffed baked potato! This cut was slightly less tender than the prime rib, but that's to be expected. Still, a nicely prepared hunk of meat. KID'S PASTA (free!): Linguini pasta, buttered & mixed with Parmesan cheese. Yummy stuff but not substantial enough for my little man. Ended up eating some of my prime rib. Ample serving of fries were prepared just right. KID'S BREADED CHICKEN STRIPS (free!): Tender pieces of white meat with a quantity that was just right for my light-eater young squire to enjoy. Fries were enjoyed here, too. KID'S MAC & CHEESE (free!): Cheesy, saucy stuff, definitely homemade. The munchkin happily filled up with this, as well as the green beans. Some unsuspected PERKS: Kids Eat Free! Apparently, all kids 8 and under receive complimentary meals ANYTIME they come with an adult. There is also a yelp check-in deal, where you're given 20% off the bill if you're here before 530pm. I have no problem saying Sutter's is by far the most underrated restaurant in Simi. This misconceived gem is what everyone needs for their pallet. Parking: Always a spot to plant your vehicle at this place. Open lot all around it and a huge lot there for cvs & jons. Decor: Ok well, the one thing I will say is this place has western 80's all over it. Not necessarily the best look, but it does work. Realistically the place could use a face lift but the food is so good it doesn't mess with any of your other senses. As well they have a good size banquet room in the back for parties or holidays when they get packed. Service: I've been here a hand full of times and the one thing I can say is this place meets the standards of what service should be. Not that they are above and beyond or that they do everything perfect. Just in the fact that they are exactly what you expect a restaurant to do and in my book that's a compliment. They come to your table right away, they check on you throughout your meal and they always make you feel comfortable to spend some time there. Def. a warm filling for a restaurant in the age of turning tables. Food: Gravy: By far the most important thing on the menu. Ok so first off all the Steak orders come with gravy, but the biggest thing is that it is unbelievably amazing. It's a mushroom gravy with capers in it and it is the best gravy I've ever had in my life. That thing pairs up with anything and everything. I even order garlic bread before the meal, just to have gravy with it before. It's just what the Dr. Ordered Garlic Bread Old school style on the GB. Flakey, Buttery, & Garlic exactly how it's meant to be. This is what I remember garlic bread tasting like when I was a kid. I wish I could just put my bib on with this bread and go swimming in the gravy with it. Steak: Always a good piece of meat here at a very reasonable price. That's what's so enduring about this place. The quality vs. price is unmatched for me. N that's measuring against any considered steakhouse. Moist flavorful and so far I have not had any issues with cooking temperature on it. My husband and I have been going to Sutter's Mill since they were in the San Fernando Valley and for the many years in Simi Valley. We especially enjoy the prime rib and the and love all the employees that work there especially Lydia the restaurant manager. She is one of the reasons we love going there. She always remembers us and picks up conversations from where we left off. We were seated in a weird section of the restaurant (felt like we were in an addition, trailer) that was off the main dining room. Not sure if this was due to having two children with us, but it wasn't the best seating arrangement. Our chairs were so close together that we bumped into the next table's seats when getting in and out. The complimentary sourdough bread was grilled and warm, but just bread and thin. The sourdough garlic toast and cheesy toast were the same toast just with garlic butter, or cheese. They were both tasty, but thin (really toast, not rolls or a thick bread like a baguette). Free entrees for children under 9. I have never seen this before! Such a great treat/surprise for us paying parents, and complimentary coffee with each dessert. Again, a rare treat! Our entrees were a pretty good deal. I ordered maine lobster (it was cooked well and not chewy at all), accompanied by a baked potato and salad (pretty simple lettuce, tomatoes and cucumber slices). My husband had the signature sirloin. I thought it was quite good but it was overcooked (asked for medium but was prepared medium well). Would have received 5 stars based on service alone. Our server was excellent. We returned my daughter's pasta (very bland and oily) and my father's onion soup (super salty) and she was gracious and sweet. Called on Wednesday to reserve a prime rib dinner for 4 for Mother's Day. The person who answered the phone told me that they were not taking reservations and to call on Sunday between 1 and 7. I asked if they had enough prime rib because of limitations of meat. She told me that there suppliers had plenty. I then called on Friday just to confirm that they were not taking reservations. I was informed the same answer as on Wednesday. Sunday I called at 1:25pm (25 minutes after they opened) to place my order. Guess what, they were out of prime rib!!!! That ruined our Mother's Day! You would think a restaurant would take orders in advance on a Holiday week so they can order enough as not to run out! I asked to talk to the Manager who basically told me nothing new.
