Last minute stop in to check out the new changes the business put into place recently. I ended up running into a friend while there and the entire bar was lively due to a football game taking place. The owner was there and incredibly generous in sharing with the patrons within the bar and overall just really made for a great experience in which I'd absolutely go back for another night of good food and good fun! read more

What an odd little place tucked away in a hidden corner of an obscure strip mall-ish type place. As you walk up to what looks like "the front door", there is a sign that asks you to enter through the patio entrance around the corner to the right. There are a couple of private tables with casual bench/lounge type seating that seem...romantic-ish, except you get to be stared at by everyone that walks by. Once you pass those side seats you enter to the patio. It is a little dark, but when your eyes adjust you step into this covered outdoor patio with a stage. There is music playing over the loud speakers. There's no podium necessarily to greet you, you need to turn left and head to the sliding glass door. Slide that door open and step inside. There's a bar, entrance to the back of house, and a small dining room. They were friendly enough and sat us right away. The vibe is odd, my friend and I couldn't quite put our finger on it. See my pics, it's pretty dark but there is mood lighting. The lighting color changes every 10 seconds or so. The menu is interesting and runs the gamut from bar food to tacos to pasta to Australian lamb meatballs. Be sure to scan the QR code on the menu to see the more non-bar type food. Here's what we sampled: Pow Pow Shrimp - pretty big plate of maybe 8-10 shrimp mixed with cauliflower nuggets. The sauce is delicious. I think I enjoyed this the most. House Fries - good fries, perhaps twice fried because they had a good crispy outside. Beer Battered Onion Rings - really good onion rings, crust was thin but hearty. My friend and I both liked these a lot. Not sure they are beer battered, they weren't your typical fluffy airy batter type but more of a flour/egg wash/breadcrumb breading to it. We both felt that the portion was meager and perhaps needed at least 2 more rings to fill out the order. We ordered a bunch of taco and each had half. Overall they were good, good enough for Simi Valley any how. I wasn't a fan of their tortillas, they were commercial flour tortillas that you and I can buy from any Kroger market. Achiote Chicken Taco - I don't usually like chicken tacos but this one was tasty. Not a lot of it on the taco and a little dry but the achiote flavoring in chicken was good. Al Pastor Taco - They called it Al pastor but it's not the shaved meat with the pineapple slice you're thinking of. It tells you on the menu that it's actually a chorizo & ground pork mix. I liked it, but was expecting something else, but then, like I said, they tell you on the menu what they're giving you. Baja Shrimp Taco - The two pieces of battered shrimp was good. This was the batter I thought I was getting on the onion rings. Kogi Taco - Personally I'd pass on this one next time. There wasn't a lot of meat in this one, it was mostly a mound of pickled veggies a minimal amount of marinated meat. Baja Fish Taco - this was a huge piece of battered cod. You can't really go wrong with a battered piece of cod. Lobster Jalapeño Mac 'n Cheese - this was an add on to our meal. It sounded so good. And while it wasn't "bad" it wasn't the Mac 'n Cheese I was expecting. This was more like pasta in what tasted like a vodka type sauce with a handful of lobster nuggets thrown on top. Perhaps if they mixed the lobster in, threw some Gruyère or fontina and some breadcrumbs the baked it or at least threw it under the salamander, it would speak to me as Mac 'n Cheese versus a pasta dish w/ lobster. I'm still not sure how I feel about this place. Perhaps my brain is still confused by the vibe of the restaurant. Personally, I can see it as a cool jazz bar with live music. Parking is not really an issue, there are a surprising amount of tucked away restaurants hiding in the corners of this strip mall that are competing for parking, but you'll find a spot eventually. read more

This place has been popping up on my Instagram like crazy. Tried it out for date night and was a bit surprised how small the inside was. Tucked away in a shopping center, I love that it has a patio but it was way too warm to sit outside. Inside is small, few tables, small bar area, very dark and moody. 5 stars for the wait staff who was wonderful and on it. They definitely checked in on us a lot and try their best to make a presence if needed. Food was good, Kogi tacos and a sunrise burger. Kogi tacos had cilantro which was not on the menu, we had to have them remake it which they did. Burger was delicious but pretty plain. The menu really didn't appeal to us, unfortunately. A couple salads, burgers, tacos, some odds and ends apps. Had a few beers, they serve them in glass mugs that are like coffee cups, kinda weird. Overall, food was good, small space, odd menu, but great waitstaff. I think it was a one and done for us. Glad we tried it out, but nothing to keep us needing to come back. read more

We arrived a little after 5 pm. Small, kind of dark, dinning area. It gives lounge definitely more than dive bar. We opted to sit on the patio, I think the ratio of tv's to tables is about 1 to 1. This is great place to watch a game. You can see a tv at every seat on the patio. Even better is the volume of the tv's doesn't interfere with a normal conversation. When we sat down, menus passed out and drink order was taken quickly. To our surprise, it was happy hour. The drinks were a great deal and they gave you a regular size glass. 2 servers, and they worked together so service was always to notch. We decided to share a few plates. The Kogi tacos were 3 to an order. Bulgogi style meat with fresh pickled vegetables and a not too spicy sauce. The meat was tender and had great flavor. The Pow pow shrimp was my favorite dish. The shrimp and cauliflower sat in a nice rich sauce, topped with black sesame seeds. The shrimp were cooked properly and the cauliflower still had a slight bite to them. My kids raved over the truffle fries. They both love tue crunch on the fry with the soft center. The fries were served with a lemony aioli. The OG nachos were massive. It was like a half sheet tray of nachos. They were good but with only 3 of us we ordered too much food. Overall it was a great experience. We will definitely return. read more

The Canteen By Cammarano's is one of my favorite spots in Wood Ranch. The Manager/Owner, Andrew, is an awesome guy. He is always positive and welcoming. The food is consistently excellent, and everything I have ever ordered has been delicious. The Canteen Burger is a standout, and they have the best french fries and onion rings around. Food - everything hit the mark. Nachos were somehow insanely good. A cilantro oil lightly seasoned almost every chip. Shrimp, lobster, lamb, asada and pastor tacos all 5/5. Drinks - green chartreuse done right. The saint cocktail was good but would have preferred it served up instead of whatever down with ice. Service - attentive and so kind. Atmosphere - a tad dark in the room but music was a good level, didn't have to compete with music. Decor on brand. Lived in Simi my whole life, surprised it took this long to discover! Great happy hour in Simi right in Wood Ranch next to Viva La Pasta. They have a pretty big outdoor seating area with lounge chairs and sofas. It was quite comfy outside and felt private. They had a good selection of both drinks and food on their happy hour menu with prices ranging from $5 to $15. The waitress was attentive and was good about checking on us. read more

This place is a local favorite by many. As a foodie and whiskey enthusiast I was looking to find a local spot I could frequent once I moved out here to Simi Valley a few months back. Man am I lucky this place is within walking distance from my place. I have been here every Friday night since and have tried virtually everything on the menu food wise as I'm always trying new things. I am a very good cook in my own right so I hold restaurants to a high standard when I can make food usually better than most places. Needless to say I have not been disappointed with any item I have tried. From the ribeye steak dinner to the Kogi tacos, burgers and new jambalaya and rotational menu items everything has been made fresh and has been absolutely delicious. Every appetizer is delicious in its own right as well. They have a good amount of options to fit everyone's palette and will not disappoint. As for the drinks I stick to whiskey options with my favorite being the old fashioned's and they are delicious and made correctly with a vast amount of bitters options to choose from on top of them making their own brown sugar simple syrup and using the right cherries to garnish. Mark and his staff from day one has provided a welcoming environment for a new person to the area and all of the staff has been very friendly and inviting making someone feel welcomed every night. If you have not been to The Canteen you are severely missing out this place is amazing and highly highly recommended. Keep up the great work guys! read more

Very weird response to a bad review. ************* The bartender was so bad that I would not come back based on the gross drinks she made. I sent a drink back and she came up to me to explain what she put in it like I don't know what I ordered. If I asked for the drink that isn't on the menu, it's because I know what it's supposed to taste like. Pouring an extra heavy drink doesn't fix that you can't bartend. I'm not 22. I'm not getting a drink to get hammered. I just wanted a nice drink so I could go back home to the kids. The app we got was sooo greasy. Occasion: Me and my wife went for Valentine's Day for the four course meal so it may not represent the normal day to day service or experience. Summary: A great time with delicious food, service, and ambience. A little hiccups here and there but overall a fun time!! Restaurant: The place has a very chill atmosphere, seating was comfortable, place didn't feel too packed. Service: Our server was great sadly I don't remember her name by the time I'm writing this. She stopped by the right amount of times. She checked in enough times without us feeling like we were abandoned but also not as frequently as to where we felt bothered. All of the servers were helpful and nice. Food: food was delicious. We had lamb meatballs and bacon wrapped dates for our first course. Lamb wasn't overcooked it was just right, it had a delicious topping of feta cheese which gave it a yummy burst of flavor. The bacon wrapped dates were the perfect balance of sweet and savory. These would be my choice in any follow visits. They are a must. Our second course was a wedge salad, which was delicious. It was served in a fun lettuce boat which was really cool. My wife is the bigger salad critic and she enjoyed it a lot. I did too! Third course we had steak that came with carrots and mashed tatters. Steak was a little small, again this is the Valentine's Day four course meal so portion sizes might be adjusted so it may not represent what you would get on a normal daily basis. The steak was delicious though, I was very happy by the taste of the third course which made up for the smaller portion sizes. Finally the last course we had one of the best red velvet cakes I've tasted in a while. Wasn't overly sweet it was just right! Drinks: We weren't too happy with the drinks and didn't want to be a bother by sending them back. We ordered the honey bear and the yuzu lemon drop. Both drinks didn't taste too sweet l, it tasted mostly like alcohol. I've had lemon drops but there was a certain level of tart and sweetness that wasn't there. The honey bear tasted like straight up alcohol with a tiny hint of honey. Keep this in mind though, we don't know how a honey bear would normally taste so our expertise on what it should taste like should be factored into our review of the drink. Price: the advertised price for the four course meal was $50. With added drinks ($20)and an extra appetizer ($10) plus tip it was a little over $100 for the both of us. If we hadn't ordered the extra side and drinks it would've been a little over $65 which isn't a bad price. If I were to do it again I'd forego the drinks but still get the extra appetizer. Overall, was great I will probably stop by for the all day all month happy hour. I would recommend this place if not for the drinks then definitely the food. From what I've had it's great food. As for the drinks I will give it a another chance during regular operating days. Make sure y'all do the all day happy hour it's only on for the month of February! read more

We're regulars, we live close by. Excellent menu, something for everyone, lots of energy, appreciative employees. It's really difficult to run a non-chain business like this and they are becoming rare in Calif. Ya might have to park over by the CVS but that's just a short few steps extra to the entrance. Food comes nicely seasoned, take a bite before ya use condiments or salt n pepper. Our last few visits the burgers were served to us cold and it wasn't busy. Maybe mention that if you like yours hot. Almost 15 years later, Cammarano's was one of my favorite weekend spots to watch one of my childhood friends bands play. So when he asked me on a date, in our adult years, I had him meet me here. We've been coming here ever since and got married just last year. We were crushed when we saw they hadn't made it. Tonight was our first time coming since their reopening and it's even nicer than it was before, limited menu but still very delicious options, and the drinks are made so well!
