First time here. Nice atmosphere and welcoming staff. We started with chips and salsa. I appreciated that you can get a small side of guacamole. I had the Chile Relleno combo with a chicken enchilada. My wife had the steak and shrimp fajitas. The Chile Relleno was the best. It was stuffed with real Mexican cheese. Very tasty. The chicken enchilada was good, bit needed more chicken. The fajitas were tasty, but maybe not the best we've tried. Still worth getting. We left extremely full and satisfied. Well this place is hopping! Friday night 6:10pm ish and packed! Parking is challenging but worth the frazzle! I've been hearing about how wonderful this Mexican restaurant is and I can see the community agrees! We waited about 20 minutes to be seated - not bad at all! The hostess, servers and busboys are so friendly and on top of EVERYTHING! They have a full bar, the margaritas are great! It's very loud in there so be prepared! Five of us dined and everyone loved their food! We started with shredded beef nachos which were wonderful! The chili verde, chicken enchiladas and asada plate were all a hit! I personally could not wait to order the chicken mole' enchiladas (I LOVE mole' and heard theirs was amazing) BUT THEY RAN OUT! So disappointed! That's all I wanted, never even looked at the menu! It's not even 7pm yet? Why oh why do you not have enough for the Friday night rush!!?? When our waitress came back to to tell me they ran out of it, (she was very sweet and apologetic) and she had already put everyone's order in - I had no idea what I wanted ‍ so I ordered a chicken taco which didn't come out until about 5-10 minutes after everyone else's food was served. I took my wife, her mom and my mom back to Elvira Mexican Grill since it was on our way home from the garden in Thousand Oaks. My wife and I been here before, my wife really loved their horchata so we came back with her mom for her birthday lunch. We found parking easily in the plaza this place is in. We arrived during lunch time but they were not busy so they were able to sit us right away. This restaurant only has 1 bathroom so be aware of that but they have a baby changing station here. I got the carne asada plate and asked for fries instead of the beans and rice. My wife got the 2 mole enchiladas ala cart, my mom got the nachos with beef and my mother in law for the enchiladas de pollo con mole. Our food came out fast so we didn't have to wait long. My mom like her nachos, my wife loved her mole enchiladas and her mom enjoyed the enchiladas de pollo con mole. I didn't like the fries that came with my carne and I forgot that my asada came with enchiladas as well. The carne asada was fine and I just give the enchiladas to my wife. I didn't realize that this place won the award for Mexican restaurant in Simi Valley for the last 2 years. They have their awards in the bathroom and at the front entrance. They also have a sticker that said Yelp users loves them. The customer service was great when we were here. read more

I ordered food from Elvira's tonight and unfortunately found a hair in my meal. I was very disappointed, especially because I've always enjoyed the food from there in the past. Unfortunately, I had to throw the entire meal away. I'm hoping this was just an isolated incident, but I do encourage the restaurant to be more mindful of quality control and food handling. I know mistakes can happen, but I hope this serves as an opportunity to do better. read more

We are in town for my sons Allstar tournament so we looked up restaurants in the area. This one came up with good reviews so we decided to check it out. The ambiance of the restaurant is really cool. Nice lights and music playing. The chips and salsa were so fresh and tasty. I ordered the Fajitas Patron. Highly recommend. The shrimp and the chicken melted in your mouth. Elvira's is family-owned, and you can feel it from the moment you're seated! The atmosphere was very dark yet cozy and laid back, with fun neon accent lights where we were at. Our server, Danny, told us he was part of the family and treated us like it. He was incredibly attentive, welcoming, and gave great recommendations, especially knowing that we are big on protein plates. We started with the table side guacamole, which is a show of course and some big ass margaritas that all came out pretty quick. We followed it with the Fajitas El Patrón that a good portion of shrimp, meat and chicken. He also recommended the carne asada plate which was also another one that caught our eye. Everything was delicious, but the carne asada absolutely stole the show--tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Plus it randomly came with an enchilada, which was a fun combo you don't see often. We were such fans when this place first opened, but as time went on they got sloppy. My biggest issue is the cleanliness... I can't ignore how the same towel is used for everything or how the dirty items are placed right next to the clean items. We stopped dining here and the health ratings reflect the concerns... too many dings. Their food is tasty however, I ordered their chicken tacos and it didn't even have a tablespoon worth of shredded chicken in it. That was very disappointing. The waiter was very attentive and asked me how everything was and I was honest. To his credit, he said if I had told him he would've taken the food back and taken care of it. I appreciated that but I don't understand why the kitchen staff would send out two tacos with barely any chicken in it. I hope writing this review will help management make sure that this doesn't happen to another customer. After we got home, both my husband and I experienced stomach discomfort and nausea, and my husband ended up vomiting. This was our first time here and we can not wait to go back. We sat in the bar and had the pleasure of having Efron wait on us. He was wonderful, sweet, very helpful suggesting items and drinks! We had a delicious margarita and a delicious vodka cocktail he suggested. Both were so delicious! We chatted with people in the bar and had a really great experience! I had the carne asada with cheese enchilada. The meat was insane! So delicious and flavorful. I was stuffed but was told how good the flan was, and it was just that! This place is great for a quick meal or a date tonight. Every time I go here, I end up getting the steak fajita salad with added shrimp. The food is always wonderfully delicious, the drinks are nice and strong, and we never have to wait long for our food. Had dinner here last night and what a hidden gem in Simi. The exterior is a little deceiving. Although it's painted nice, it's next to the 7-11 whcih makes you think it's just another taco place. WRONG! The food was great as well as the service. The staff were hustling all night but always smiling and so kind. Food was very authentic. Not any of those canned sauces and microwaved chicken. The owner came to our table and chatted for a bit (sorry I can't remember your name). She was so proud of her place, her food, her staff and so thankful for her customers. Asked over the phone for simple burritos, got wet burritos. Asked for fajitas, got pieces of meat only. And to make the experience even worse when you pay they ask for tips. Food and service is consistently good. Everything we have tried there has been delicious. Portions are big enough to have leftovers.

It is only after visiting a neighboring eatery that I discovered the presence of Elvira's Cantina. So after a few weeks, here I was, again in Simi Valley, to have Mexican food for lunch. The menu has several choices and my eyes honed in on the combinations section. But it is not as descriptive as it looks. If you wish to have a tamale and a taco, for example, the choices between the two are limited or fixed. And the two taco deal does not allow you to mix and match. Similarly with the enchilada combos. Disappointing. Never seen this anywhere before. Anyway, the two soft taco carne asada is what I got and it was impressive. The refried beans came with a carpet of cheese. I had to ask for another serving, without cheese. What is this obsession with so much cheese? I know its got calcium, but many restaurants over use cheese and in my opinion, it camouflages the taste of the dish, be it beans, a tostada or a taco. The place was busy and the food here is good. Complimentary salsa was well prepared and so were the chips. Just go easy on the cheese. read more

Ate supper at Elvira's Tuesday afternoon. Got there about 4:30 and the place was full by 5 pm. We met Danny and Bobby Elvira's grandsons using their grandmothers recipes. This is a family ran restaurant. Danny recommended the guava margarita, the carne Asada dinner, and enchilada suizes. Before the meal came , Danny served us chips and salsa both red and green. The chips look thick but were so light and crispy. Danny said they made the chips in the restaurant. But the red salsa was unbelievable so good. Danny's recommendations were so good. Though I'm not a beans and rice person, these were great also. But the last was the best. Try their flan for desert. You have to eat it slow to savor the flavor. We had a wonderful time talking to Danny and Bobby as we passed through to Alabama and hope to see them again if they expand to the east. You have got to see the bar. 5 stars. read more

Today 3/12 I came in today with some friends at the bar top to go and enjoy some drinks. Granted one of them had ordered a round before we got there, and right after we got there we got one round for my friend and I... so one of our friends was being a little loud, soon after that the bartender named Brayan (Brian) came up to us abruptly and said hey you need to calm down with the cussing and loudness because there are kids here, he assumed things like us being drunk, keep in mind we were in the bar area, the bartender came about it the wrong way, he could've said "hey could you calm your friend he's being a little too much right now" we know our friend and would've been able to talk to him. Cool, quaint, neighborhood cantina with a dive bar built in on one side, standard seating on the other. Classic Tex Mex and combination platos done well, the house salsa was notably fresh and served chilled alongside the freshly fried chips. Service was also fast and friendly.
