BEST Mexican restaurant in Simi Valley!! It's traditional Mexican food, but with a modern twist! I got ceviche with rice, beans, and a Mexican coke. It was finger licking good! The ceviche had plenty of shrimp in it! Such a great amount of protein. I'm typically very particular about shrimp texture, this was absolutely perfect. Cooked to perfection and so moist! It was topped with mango, which paired so deliciously with the lime. Avocado and cucumbers with tajin were also included. And I got 4 small tostadas, crackers, and tapatio packets on the side. My Ubereats driver took a long time to get my food to me, and I was starting to get impatient and hangry, but receiving my order made up for everything! I cannot wait to order again! read more

This review is for the restaurant named "Kalaveras" (in Simi Valley, California), which has just recently closed. This business location was renamed to "Kulturas," which has an entirely separate yelp business page. Kulturas had a soft opening on September 3rd, 2026, and they are scheduled to have their official grand opening on September 24th. I recently visited this Kulturas, and I plan to write a yelp review on this new business soon, after I have had a few more visits here and I've solidified my opinion. However, now that Kalaveras has closed, I'd like to post my review on my experiences here. I have been to this Kalaveras about a dozen times over the last few years. Throughout all my experiences the food and the drinks were always very good, and I had no problems whatsoever. The service at this Kalaveras was very good most of the time, and I only experienced one bad waitress with a bad attitude. The atmosphere here was always clean, vibrant and inviting. The only problem that seemed to exist was that this restaurant was VERY LOUD inside, so much so that the people I regularly go to restaurants with often did not want to come here. I've seen other folks mention how loud it was at this Kalaveras in their yelp reviews as well. This atmosphere appeared to be targeted for an audience in their twenties, and in large groups, especially for folks looking for a club/night-life environment. Unfortunately, I believe this environment was just annoying to older folks, or even any age group of people who actually wanted to hear the person with whom they were talking. Overall, this Kalaveras was a very good restaurant with very good service, with only one major flaw: the loud noise. From my first experience at Kulturas, it appears that the owners and managers here are trying to make improvements, and they are trying to transition this restaurant from a 3-star or a 4-star location to a 5-star location. Extremely disappointed with our experience. I called the restaurant the day before to ask if reservations were required because we were planning to come watch the World Cup game with a group of seven people. I was specifically told that reservations were not needed and that seating was on a first-come, first-served basis. To be safe, we arrived two hours early, only to be told that we actually did need reservations. We were shocked because we had called ahead specifically to avoid this exact situation. We ended up wasting our time and had to scramble to find another place that could accommodate our group. What made the experience even worse was the way the staff handled it. While my dad was calmly trying to speak with the employees at the front desk to understand what happened, they literally walked away from him instead of listening or trying to resolve the issue. That level of disrespect and lack of customer service was unacceptable. If the restaurant has different policies for major events like the World Cup, they need to communicate that clearly and make sure all employees are giving customers accurate information. Between the misinformation and the dismissive attitude from the staff, this was a terrible experience. We definitely won't be returning, and I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone expecting good customer service. read more

This was my second time visiting Kalaveras. The first time was when they had just opened, so I don't remember much about that experience. My second visit was this past week, and it definitely left a good impression. My husband and I stopped in for a daytime date to watch the USA FIFA game. We grabbed seats at the bar, which gave us a great view of the big screen. There were plenty of TVs throughout the restaurant as well, making it a great spot to catch a game. The service was friendly and attentive, and I was pleasantly surprised by their lunch menu. There were lots of options, and the prices were very reasonable. We ordered the chile relleno combo; which comes with an enchilada, beans and rice. It was honestly more than enough food for us to share. We also ordered the tinga taquitos. Everything came out hot, fresh, and delicious. For drinks, I started with the spicy cucumber margarita, which was easily a 10/10. It was so good that we ended up ordering a pitcher to share. I stopped by this Kalaveras to take advantage of their happy hour. When I came, they were not busy at all. There was tons of parking spots near the front and barely any other guest inside. I sat at the bar area so I could watch the soccer game playing. I got the spicy buffalo wings from the happy hour menu. I think it's a great deal because you get eight bone in buffalo wings. They also give chips and salsa as complimentary. I like the chips and salsa, it had a nice spice to it. My buffalo wings came out quick and it was good to me. When I sat at the bar I did see some small flies flying around, so the bartender used a fly zapper swatter to get the small flies around the bar area. He was just walking around the bar area and you'll hear the zap from time to time. It would discourage some guest or gross them out but it didn't bother me. The customer service I received here was great, I didn't have any issues when I was dining at the restaurant. There was no loud music that Kalaveras is known for when I was there but it could be because they save it for the night time. read more

Decided to celebrate my Birthday here because I wanted to drink Margaritas! I usually make the drive to Plata in Agoura Hills because 1 or 2 glasses and I feel good! Here I had 4 Margaritas and didn't have a buzz or anything? Kinda disappointed me because it's your birthday, $13-$14 glasses of Margaritas you want to feel something with your drinks right? So made me question the amount of tequila that was being used. As for the food it was good, can't complain, maybe a little pricey. Birria and carnitas were really good, the mushroom taco had surprisingly little taste considering its supposed to be cooked or marinated with Padilla Chile. The real problems that caused it to be 3 starts was service was incredibly slow. It took an absurdly long time to get drunk orders in, food order in, refills, and the check. It wasn't packed nor slow but u would assume with the pricetags (quite high) attached to their food and drinks, they could afford more waiters if that was the problem with the mediocre service. It was also uncomfortably loud in there. I had to talk ridiculously loudly to be heard by my group. The place is definitely a vibe, just not for me. Maybe good for parties and the such? Definitely a certain vibe and atmosphere here but surprised that it still is very family friendly. We came for quick bites and a drink. Pleasantly it was a Tuesday and happy hour. The happy hour drinks are good size and the variety of half liter margaritas and specialty drinks is impressive. The salsa with the chips, was thick and tomatoey, unfortunately no heat and no real flavor. The carne asada fries were good. The taquitos were a really pretty plate but under seasoned. The wings were solid and quesabirra tacos were really good. Overall the portions were good size, for appetizers. The music volume at 5 was pleasant but by 6:30 the music was turned up. The tacos here are delicious. They are small but the meats are just perfect. The chips are crunchy and fresh and the salsa has the perfect texture And spice. What can you do better? Have a few affordable things in the menu, Simi is a middle class place and with kids it too pricy. Maybe a few affordable appetizers for those who like to have a couple of drinks. We came here for Taco Tuesday, and while the food itself was actually great, the service completely missed the mark. My husband and I ordered pineapple margaritas when we sat down, but they didn't arrive until 20 minutes after we had already finished eating. To make matters worse, we weren't even offered water while we waited. When our server finally brought the drinks, he informed us they were out of pineapple and handed us two mango margaritas instead--without checking with us first.
