We were immediately sat at a table and told there were 10 minutes left before happy hour ended. Our timing couldn't have been better. Aside from the great timing and epic synchronicity, the service and food was amazing. I had a Vegas roll, and a smoked eel roll, and seaweed salad. All really good and fresh. My cohorts had a baked salmon roll, an udon noodle with chicken and veggie dish, and a Philly roll. This is a great neighborhood spot that I'll definitely return to. read more

Satisfied the sushi cravings! We got takeout from here, and it was a pretty seamless experience. This spot is located in a super unassuming area, and the restaurant itself looks really casual. I got the salmon scallop roll, which was exactly what it sounds like - scallop and avocado on the inside, and fresh salmon on top with some spicy mayo. The quality of each component was great - fresh scallops and salmon, well cooked and seasoned rice, and the sauce was the perfect touch on top. Nothing to complain about! Overall I really liked this place and I'd go back! I was happy to see that their happy hour ends at 7 which is pretty late, happy to get extra time for deals. We went on the friday after New year around 7ish and found a table immediately. I am not sure if it was due to the holiday week. Miso is to order and not complimentary. The gentleman who served us was friendly but pushy. He wasn't ready to give us more time to go through the entire menu. Tried Sushi Kanpai on a whim, and it was delicious! Reasonable prices and well packaged. Really like that the Udon noodles, tempura, and broth were all packaged separately. Be very careful with the broth if you're doing take out/delivery, it was extremely hot to the point I was concerned the container wouldn't survive the trip back to my place. The vegetable and shrimp tempura was well made, not too much batter. The gyoza may look like the kind you'd get from H Mart/District H's freezer section, but they were delicious and pretty well portioned with the meat. Will definitely try again! read more

Good selection on the HH menu. You need to buy a drink (of any kind) before you can order off the HH menu but the service was speedy and attentive. The sushi was pretty good. I usually get sushi Kanpai for lunch at work. Service is decent for to-go orders, they are ready quickly and on-time, nice enough, and more often than not they pay attention to any special notes I add. I have notice a decline in the quality of the food the last few months, however. I don't know whether to attribute to the business trying to save money, or the quality that is available for them to purchase, but I do miss the better quality that I experienced the year prior. I found the restaurant partly by accident, just looking for an open sushi place near where I had to run an errand. My older kid and I stumbled in to a delightful place with excellently priced and prepared food. We both ordered bento, which was just the right amount and delicious. I go to the Polyclinic Madison all the time, and this restaurant is just a little hidden away, even though it's right at the next corner up the hill. Definitely worth a stop in if you're in the area for medical appointments or what have you. Parking can be tight, but you can usually find an on-street spot within a few blocks with about 5 minutes of searching. There are several lots within a block, too. read more

Sushi Kanpai was selected by an area office the location, menu, and customer service are superb. I greatly appreciate the bento style to go covered to go plates; this made it easier to transport and unpack. The office staff were all very happy with their selections, and raved about the sushi. Be mindful of the ongoing construction going on around it, if parking becomes challenging there's a parking lot across the street that can be utilized. Lunch roll combo (2 rolls): we got the salmon skin roll and the shrimp tempura roll for this. I was surprised at how the shrimp tempura roll was made as it's not your typical way. Both roll was probably my least favorite. The Crispiness from each roll was gone and it has a more chewier taste. The flavor was subpar. Lunch special ( 6piece sushi + California roll): the california roll was kinda bland for my taste. The sushi was ok, it was standard, nothing really stood out. Katsu bento: this came with rice, California roll, veggie tempura, a small salad. This was pretty good. I was surprised by the high average for this place.... and perhaps we just had a uniquely bad experience. Also, as a caveat, our food was delivered via Uber Eats, and I don't blame the restaurant for how bad the nigiri looked when it arrived. It doesn't really bother me as long as it tastes good anyway. We ordered the shrimp tempura, a California roll, a Black Dragon Roll, saba nigiri, and ikura nigiri. Where do I start. The tempura was probably the only okay thing that we ordered. It wasn't bad, it wasn't good, it just was. The saba on the saba nigiri was also commendable. It had a good vinegar marinade and the fish by itself was delicious. Further, I appreciated that they packaged things separate instead of trying to stuff all the rolls and nigiri into one container. Lastly, they were very generous with the ginger which is always a bonus. Unfortunately, there are no further positives to add. The worse part about the sushi we ordered was the rice used to make the ikura and saba nigiri. It was perhaps the worst sushi rice I've eaten. For one, it was not truly sushi rice as it had absolutely no discernible rice vinegar flavor. Secondly, it was under-cooked and on the tougher side. The last part took me a while to figure out but I finally did.... THEY CLEARLY DID NOT RINSE THE RICE TO REMOVE THE STARCH BEFORE THEY COOKED IT. I could not believe that. It's been so long since I've tasted that starchy flavor on rice but someone at that restaurant tonight was either lazy or lacked basic training. Aside from the above, the Black Dragon Roll was the blandest roll that I've tasted in some time. Again, this may have been due to the use of starchy rice that overpowers everything else, but yah, even the unagi lacked the typical teriyaki flavor. I hate to say but this was the worst of the 7 or 8 Seattle sushi restaurants we've eaten at in the past 5 weeks. Even Tenei, which served cooked saba on their nigiri gets a higher rating than this place. read more

I couldn't exactly tell), 4 pieces of Nigiri, a simple tuna roll, a side of rice, seaweed salad, and shrimp & vegetable tempura. I believe everyone is offered miso soup regardless. The tuna roll and seaweed salad just tasted a bit off to me, and the sashimi just didn't seem that great. We also ordered a baked salmon roll that was just wayyy too creamy and heavy. We didn't finish the last 3 pieces cause it just made us felt sick from the heaviness of the sauces. We did have friends who ordered their other rolls and really enjoyed it, so maybe it was just what we chose. It seems like they specialize in rolls rather than fresh sashimi, based on their reviews.
