Best happy hour for sushi lovers in Seattle! My college besties celebrated our April babies on our visit At here and we got a ton of food for great prices. Where can you get a good 5 piece sashimi appetizer for $10? There are 2 HH times (4-6p and 10p-12a) Highly recommend HH: -sashimi -garlic short ribs -crispy calamari -Seattle roll Love the indoor lush patio dining ambiance. Our server was also very friendly and accommodating with our big group. He even gave us the 3 desserts on the house for our 3 bday celebrants! We left stuffed and happy - the next day we were already talking about coming back.

Great: drinks and service Good: ambience, good for groups Meh: sushi quality could be much better. It was more apparent trying the sashimi, as sauces and other ingredients hide the quality of the fish. Some of the rolls were also surprisingly spicy (I have a medium tolerance level), which makes it harder for a group to enjoy with different levels of tolerance.

Umi Sake House use to be a go to spot for us during happy hour as the prices were great! However, this trip it felt just okay. It's still a popular spot, and we only waited about 10 minutes on a Friday, which wasn't bad. The space is still a vibe--dim lighting, lots of greenery, and a great date night atmosphere--but it does get pretty loud once it fills up. Service was solid and attentive, and we were able to order happy hour right on time, which I appreciated. For food, we tried a mix of items. The garlic short ribs had good flavor, but were a bit tougher than expected and leaned on the sweeter side. We also had calamari, which was hit or miss--some pieces were crispy, others a little chewy. The soft shell crab in the spider roll was fried with a thick bready batter which we didn't love. We preferred the thin tempura. Nothing was bad, but nothing really stood out either, especially compared to how I remembered it before. Happy hour is still a decent deal, but I'm not rushing back anytime soon.

Umi Sake House is a fun & cute sushi place in downtown Seattle! This was my first time going so we tried a few rolls and drinks and we had a great time! We went on a Saturday night with no reservation and was able to sit down at the bar (3 people) even though they were booked throughout the whole night. They took walk ins too though, despite them being really busy which was nice! Their drinks were pretty strong (not complaining) and their sushi was delish. I will be coming back to try the main dining room soon! Instagram: @Madeline's Dines

Good food and service were great! Cocktails were amazing as well. Hard to find a sushi place that has cocktails over just sake and beer. Love this spot for sushi in Seattle !

Sashimi and nigiri were good. Our group got the largest platters. The adegashi tofu was delicious. Perfect firmness, batter, and sauce. Had a great courtyard in the middle of the restaurant.

Amazing food! Definitely come here for the sashimi. Overall it was a great experience, from the gorgeous interior to the beautifully decorated plates. I loved that it came with edamame as a starter. Everything was so marvelous. The garlic ribs were delicious, and the sushi was excellent as well. Of course, my favorite had to be the salmon sashimi. The staff were very attentive, and we didn't have to wait too long for a table. The prices also felt reasonable for the quality of the food. We ordered a lot of food and ended up much fuller than expected, haha. The green tea tiramisu was definitely a highlight, and I really wish I lived closer so I could come back more often! I would definitely recommend trying the garlic ribs and the salmon sashimi.

I am so satisfied! Fresh list and fresh staff! Wonderful!! As a local, UMI is the place for fresh fish and service .

Best spot for late night happy hour! The restaurant is sleek and modern, while being inviting and somewhat casual. To our surprise, we received complimentary edamame. The happy hour menu is by-far the best deal and introduction to the restaurant, as you can sample their sashimi, sushi, appetizers, and drinks. We each ordered a sashimi set and a drink-sapporo draft beer, hot sake, and nigori sake. The fish were fresh, the drinks paired nicely, and the prices were amazing. I will definitely be back with more friends!

What a hidden gem! First time in Seattle and wanted to have fresh sushi. This place delivered! At first, it does not appear to be busy, but the main dining area is hidden behind a long hallway and reception area. Once we got to our table, this place was PACKED. Make sure you have a reservation. We unknowingly arrived during happy hour where they had great deals on sushi and drinks. The sashimi was to die for! Their calamari was also excellent. Very crispy and well seasoned. My favorite thing ever was their green tea tiramisu! Do not skip on this! Our waitress was delightful. The restaurant itself was enthusiastic and filled with energy! Great place for family dinner or date night. Easy to access for pedestrians

I just feel like I've had better fish in Arizona, and Seattle is so close to water. Sad face! The ambiance is divine though, and the sake cocktails are amazing, especially the cucumber sake. Lychee lemonade is a personal fave. The sushi platter is not worth it though...

Definitely one of the better sushi spots in Seattle and their happy hour is so worth it. They have a wide selection of different sushi and other dishes to choose from. The fish taste pretty fresh, which is a plus. Love the vibes of this place as well, and the service was great. The waiters were really attentive and checked in pretty often.

This is one of my favorite spots for happy hour in Belltown. The food is always good and there's a wide selection to choose from on their happy hour menu. We enjoyed the pink lychee cooler and was warned it was more tart than sweet. The garlic short ribs and crispy calamari are must haves. I always enjoy the hamachi kama and they have a good one. It was nice to see that they offer a complimentary dessert for special occasions. In this case, my daughter opted for the lychee ice cream to celebrate her birthday. Service was great and staff were attentive. I'm not a fan of the couch and low table seating that they have. Reservations are recommended and allow time to find parking.

Ask the Community - Umi Sake House

Is there a tatami seating area? Is that tatami area reserved only for large groups?

Hi Douglas. There is a tatami room that seats 8-12 guests and guests must be 21+ years of age.

    Is there a dress code?

No dress code. More casual dressing.

Does the restaurant have its own parking? If not, where is the nearest parking?

It is just street parking, which can be hard to find.

    Are minors allowed?

Absolutely! There is a whole restaurant - but they obviously cannot sit for happy hour at the bar.

    Is there outdoor seating?

Kind of? There's a sort of courtyard where they can open all the windows so it's very open airflow but not fully outside

    Is there AC?

of course - there's a ton of seafood in there lol only makes sense

Do they require proof of vax or negative test prior to entry?

Yes! With ID to prove that the vaccination card is yours.

Are your short ribs gluten free?

No, there is gluten in the marinade.

    Are walk ins welcome?

    Yes if they have space.

    Is there happy hour?

Yes they do have happy hour from 4-6pm and 10pm-close daily. Mentioned on their website as well.

What time does the kitchen close nightly?

Hi Mario! Thanks for reaching out :) Our kitchen closes at 12am every night.

How do you get seated in the tatami room? I've came a bunch of times and never get offered a seat there?

It has to be requested on a reservation.

I have one person in my party allergic to fish. Are there a few chicken dishes to choose from? In browsing the menu photos I only see one or two dishes and can't tell if it is something current or not (rotating menu?).

Yes, there are many dishes without fish. Do you mean shellfish? I've never heard of a fish allergy.

    Do they offer brown rice?

Hi Liana, Unfortunately, we do not serve brown rice at Umi due to the high volume demand of the…

The seasonal albacore sashimi was the low point: sliced too thick, with a strong fishy smell suggesting it wasn't as fresh as advertised. I had to wash it down with water to get through my gagging. For a seafood city like Seattle, the nigiri was shockingly mediocre too. About 80% of the food was a struggle to get through. Grilled fish was overdone; the fried fish was overdone, cold, and stiff. A tofu-sauce dish with fig, walnut, and shrimp somehow tasted like potato salad -- more Americanized comfort food than Kaiseki. Dessert looked beautiful, with a bit of tableside theatrics, but tasted bland and the components were hard to distinguish from each other. The one dish that impressed was, ironically, the wagyu beef -- not exactly the point of a Kaiseki menu built around seasonal, local ingredients. Service didn't help. We were seated dead-center at the counter but too far from the two staff explaining each course to actually hear them -- we kept leaning in, only for one of them to eventually notice. We also missed out on things other diners got, like an up-close look at the aged tuna. There was only one waitress, who was also the hostess and had to clear every course and handle all drinks -- she was clearly stretched thin, and our water and tea went unrefilled until we flagged it ourselves. I don't fault her personally; it read as an understaffing problem. But at this price point, they should have staffed appropriately -- a mandatory 20% tip feels absurd when there isn't enough staff to actually deliver the service that tip is supposed to reflect. For the price and the format's promise, this fell far short of what I'd expect from Kaiseki. It's worth noting that many glowing reviews here mention meeting the head chef -- we didn't, and I wonder if we simply caught the restaurant on an off night without him there for quality control. If so, that's still a problem: consistency shouldn't depend on which night you walk in.

The restaurant describes its food as Hawaiian-Japanese and as someone who visits Hawaii nearly every year, that's a good description. Our lunches were very filling and good value. The Main Service & Food Transparency Issues: While the overall food quality was disappointing, the service was even worse. Our skewers arrived piled on a single plate with no explanation of what was what. Our server promised to check on the names of the dishes but never returned. She actively avoided our table for the rest of the night. We eventually flagged down someone who appeared to be the manager or owner. While polite, her service was just as inattentive. When she tried to identify the skewers, her explanation completely contradicted our actual order. Logistics & Drinks: The lack of basic service standards was shocking considering the restaurant only had two other tables occupied. A cocktail ordered at the very beginning of the night didn't arrive until we were almost finished eating, despite us successfully ordering multiple rounds of beer and sake throughout the meal. When we were seated, there were only about three other occupied tables, all with couples. Two of those tables were already being served their food. We placed our order, but our food didn't arrive for about an hour despite the restaurant appearing to be fully staffed. To make matters worse, multiple tables that were seated after us received their food before we did. The long wait might have been easier to overlook if the food had been worth it, but it wasn't. I ordered the seven-piece sushi assortment with a baked crab roll, and more than four pieces of the fish were still partially frozen. The fish did not taste fresh, which was especially disappointing after such a long wait. An hour to assemble seven pieces of sushi seemed excessive. Seeing that more than half of the fish was still partially frozen made the hour-long wait make a lot more sense. Maybe they were waiting for it to defrost before serving it. My sister ordered a baked crab roll and two pieces of seared snow crab. The seared snow crab was completely forgotten until I had already finished my meal. We had to remind the staff before they rushed to prepare it. The baked crab roll itself was decent, but the combination of the extremely slow service, disorganized order handling, partially frozen fish, and forgetting an entire dish until we asked about it means we won't be returning.

Those with allergies, beware of the management here…read more Since I'm allergic to crab I specifically asked our waitress if imitation or real crab was used in the rolls as it wasn't clear on the menu and she confirmed that it was imitation - awesome, we ordered three rolls. However, after I took my first bite I noticed the taste was unusually fishy and the texture was off. I checked the other rolls and the "crab salad" looked stringy like real crab so I spit it out and had my partner ask the chef if it was imitation or real. The chef said it was real so we flagged down our waitress to tell her we couldn't eat this even though I had literally asked her to confirm for me. She brings out the manager and there's no apology, he just says "the owners switched to real crab about 3 weeks ago for better quality" and that they can take it back and off the bill, but hello? You don't inform your staff about that change? Your waitress confirmed to me that it was not crab. They were lucky I spit out my food as soon as I realized and had allergy medicine on me. They rushed me to pick something else after I asked if I could order something without crab since the kitchen was closing and they didn't have imitation crab to use (which could all have been avoided had they given me the correct information to begin with). What we ended up with was alright, though the manager rushed me to order a roll with bell pepper in it (tf?). The cherry on top is that when our waitress came with our bill, they gave us three tip options - based on the original total LMAO!! Our new bill was around $50 (since we ordered less) vs the other $100+ bill and somehow an 18% tip was nearly half of our bill. We aren't ones to not tip and it's not like this was the kitchen's fault - just management - so we left a 15% tip for our new bill.

We also ordered a side of crispy rice which came with tuna and snow crab for us to assemble ourselves. Best crispy rice I've had, as it wasn't overfried and the toppings were incredibly fresh. Favorites from the omakase: albacore, fuji salmon, negitoro, and the bluefin tuna 4 ways. Our server was kind, prompt, and very attentive. Highly recommend making a reservation here!

We opted for the 16pc Chef's Choice Sushi Course, which consisted of 4 courses. For the first course, we were served Albacore, Flounder, Sea Bream, and Black Snapper, which were excellent. The cuts of fish were great, and I appreciated the server advising where we should skip the soy sauce. The second course was Amberjack, Striped Jack, and 3 different Salmon varieties. As a salmon lover, I especially enjoyed this part! The fourth course consisted of Bluefin Tuna served 4 ways (all delicious) and the final course had Chopped Fatty Tuna, Eel, and Tamago. This last one was probably my least favorite, and the Tamago was different than normal, almost pastry-like. However, the overall experience was awesome, and we were very full by the end. A pricey but delicious dinner!

The staff in general were also very respectful and friendly! Dinner service lasted almost 2 hrs. We were the only reservation at 5 so we ended up talking with a lot of the chefs, which was very cool. It's not everyday that you get to speak with a talented chef. A few highlights for me: -The tuna, smoked salmon and sablefish from the appetizer plate was stunning -Dashi soup was out of this world delicious. I loved the tomato notes. It was light yet had depth. -Really enjoyed the uni and botan ebi. The uni was very fresh and melted in my mouth. -Dashi soup to finish was also so yummy; made with fish bones broth and dashi, it made me feel bad about the instant Dashi I use at home. Also the kombu in the miso tasted very fresh, not like the dried kinds I usually eat. -Genmaicha ice cream with shiso jelly and melons was a strangely delicious combo. We will definitely return!

Wow one of the best kaiseki experiences ever in the US. We've tried many kaiseki restaurants…read moreranging from Michelin starred ones in Tokyo and Kyoto to Canada and this one is included in our favorites. Amazing service and food Service: we loved how this restaurant did a wonderful job explaining how each dish was made, a little story behind it, and fun facts that helped us really appreciate and understand what we were eating. Our server was from Japan and he did a great job speaking English and chatting with the guests so A+ service for that. My husband also had the wine and sake pairing and said he really enjoyed the choices and found a sake he really liked Food: we tried a variety of dishes and our favorite was def the dashi soup and I personally really enjoyed the halibut with English peas. The green sauce which they later told me was made of Brussels sprouts was one of the best complimenting sauces I've ever had w this fish and it wasn't too strong with the right balance. Ambience: the restaurant was beautiful, clean, and reminded me of Japan. It was a perfect setting for celebrating our anniversary and they made it feel very special. Highly recommend this restaurant
