I appreciated they offer a small version of the chirashi bowl so I had a chance to try a variety items on the menu. I ordered the fatty tuna nigiri, uni nigiri, and a specialty roll. Some of the fish in the chirashi bowl didn't quite suit my taste. The fatty tuna was a bit firmer than I expected. The uni didn't have a strong fishy taste but wasn't very sweet either. The specialty roll was interesting. I didn't enjoy the egg or edamame puree topping; a bit disappointed since it was recommended by the server. Overall, the high price point didn't quite match the expectations in terms of quality.

Went here for dinner and luckily we were in time for happy hour, we didn't find much we wanted to try off or it but we did get the green beans. Overall it was a nice spot, pretty empty when we got there. I think we were only 1 of 2 groups there but it is happy hour so bit early for dinner. Overall everything was alright, I felt like the green beans were a bit inconsistent which had sauce on some and less taste on others. The crab cakes weren't too bad but they were completely surrounded by sauce which was a bit much, I didn't mind the sauce but maybe a bit too much. My cousin also asked what kind of crab was used in the crab cakes, the server said real crab, my cousin repeated the question and the server had to go ask the kitchen to update that it is in fact imitation crab. So that was a bit odd, they tasted fine tho. Both of the sushi rolls weren't bad. For the salmon heaven I liked it but felt like it was a bit salty or something, and for the fly roll I liked it a lot --- not sure the crispy onions added much to it/ I thought I'd like it more but not sure if I did. Overall wouldn't go out of my way for it but not bad

Relatively new sushi place on 15th & Madison, with a large menu of hand rolls, sushi, and sashimi. They have $1.50 off starters during happy hour until 6pm so we tried the spicy edamame and takoyaki octopus balls; both were good - though I'd get the regular salted edamame next time. For dinner we had the sashimi and sushi deluxe (smallest sized tier - they had 4 versions of progressively larger versions of each). We each really enjoyed our fish - I thought the sashimi flavor was delicate/subtle and was plated well with seaweed, microgreens, edible flowers, scallions, and cabbage behind/holding up the various types of fish. While not the best sushi I've ever had in my life, it hit the spot and I'll be back. In terms of ambiance, the restaurant is very casual and brightly lit; with large floor-to-ceiling windows looking out towards Madison; and 90's pop music playing

Really good location, not too far from central cap hill but still a good walkable distance to be quiet enough, would recommend as a date spot. My first visit, i was honestly a little disappointed by my salmon roll because they put sauce under my roll, so the rice would crumble and rolls broke apart every time i picked it up. They could also add more imura imo, and In the picture, it doesn't look kind of messy. Taste wise though, the salmon roll didnt stand out, but i tried the loco loco and it was reallyyy good!! So that encouraged me to come back and try other things. Mentaiko udon could be saltier and less creamy, and i think they gave an edamame dip, super unique.

I went here with 2 friends on a Tuesday dinner and it was fairly easy to make reservations day of. The place is pretty small so a reservation is recommended nonetheless. It was a nice touch they put a reserved piece of paper with your name and time on the table. We were given a edamame dip to start, which was fairly solid. It is pretty refreshing, with an interesting texture. This is kind of like their take of chips and guacamole. We ordered 5 dishes for 3 of us, which was more than enough. We got the salmon usuzukuri, short rib entree, yaki udon with sukiyaki, Capitol Hill roll, and Sakana roll. The salmon usuzukuri was the best dish that we ordered, so we started off with a WOW. The salmon was very fresh and the sauce enhanced the salmon flavor quite a lot. There is edamame puree underneath - looks like this is their signature flair. Short rib was good but felt fairly standard. It came with rice that was a bit undercooked which was a miss, but does not warrant taking off a star given the quality of the rest of the dishes. Yaki udon with sukiyaki was pretty good. I love the udon here, as they prepared it quite well and somewhat al dente. There is generous amounts of sukiyaki beef and it was juicy. A nice touch was there was bonito flakes in it too. Capitol Hill roll is very aesthetic with the rainbow toppings from the salmon, mango, avocado, and tuna, and the inside has tuna and tamago for a sweet and savory combination. Similarly, the Sakana roll has a sweet and savory combination with egg and salmon on top, with soft shell crab and real crab inside. This roll is on the expensive side ($24) but it is topped with high quality premium ingredients and comparable to cost for standard rolls in other sit down restaurants. I liked the Capitol Hill more even though the ingredients in this roll individually are better, likely due to how the flavors combined. Service was good for the most part. We did have to flag down to ask for water refills, but they were willing to accommodate using a different credit card even though my friend accidentally used theirs, which is something that some establishments may refuse to go through that hassle especially when it is busy.

Second time coming here and sushi is always so fresh and delicious! Came here as a party of 3 with reservations and we were greeted and seated immediately. Service was friendly and we appreciated the complimentary edamame guac with chips! So yummy! Ambiance is modern and clean. Food: + Beef sukiyaki nabe loaded with tofu and fish cakes! so good! + I forgot what we ordered, but it was definitely one of their large sushi and sashimi sets to share! Everything was fresh and tasty! + we also shared one of their rolls and was also very good! Overall, I really love this restaurant and I feel like its underrated! It's a little further away from the main cap hill area, but finding parking is a lot easier.

Super cute place in Cap Hill. It's got huge open windows giving it a nice open air feel while indoors. The surrounding area feels quiet and cozy w/ other cute restaurants on the block. A bit pricey but nothing I don't expect from Seattle restaurants. I tried the crispy tuna and the mentaiko udon. Both were good. The rice was crispy without being dry or hard and the tuna tasted fresh. The garnishes were nice as well. The udon was creamy and rich, noodles well cooked (not too soft, not undercooked). (Edit: maybe I don't know my mushrooms because my mom says these might be cremini) The udon has mushrooms, of which type the waitress was unable to tell me. I personally don't like the flavor of shiitake mushrooms, but the udon had a hint of that taste. It wasn't overwhelming and I could still enjoy the dish, but I wish that the waitress had double checked w/ the kitchen before answering if she wasn't sure. Overall, I still think I would come check this place out again for their other rolls and dishes. The udon is good, especially if you like the flavor of shiitake but I don't think I'd order it again.

I've dined in for happy hour one time and ordered take-out from their regular menu the second time. I love the capitol hill and area 206 rolls. The mini chirashi bowl was also so worth it! The crispy spicy salmon is good if you like crispy rice! I didn't enjoy their happy hour rolls as much since they were tiny and more plain but I recommend trying any of their specialty rolls! The scallop crudo was tasty for an appetizer. Service was friendly. I'd recommend checking this place out!! Will be coming back for their specialty rolls.

The service and space are great. They have great happy hour deals (1 off wine sake or beer, 1.25 off regular rolls, 1.50 off fancier stuff). They give you a free edamame dip and corn chips for the table. The wine and sake were good. Every other dish we ordered was great--short ribs, seaweed salad, cucumber roll (I asked for California rolls but was given this), avocado roll, salmon roll). It sucked that the ribs didn't come with miso like online menus claimed, but that's life. I would have loved to not have a huge bone lodged in my throat after a single piece of unagi and avocado roll. Staff tried to tell me the chef cuts bones small and it's totally normal in an unagi roll... I've been eating this exact dish in this city in restaurants of varying price for 15 years (including grocery store sushi!) and I've never once gotten a bone before today. They gave us a free mochi dessert (two pieces sliced into halves with whipped cream) as an apology, but if I swallow a certain way I can still feel where the bone was. I would not go back.

    Edamame guac?
    Diana C.

The sushi was very good quality and I enjoyed both my futomaki and caterpillar rolls. They also had an interesting edamame "guac" and tortilla chips appetizer they provided for free that was pretty tasty too. I'd definitely come back here for sushi any time. Service was very very good. The server was attentive and thoughtful and she was also friendly and knowledgeable about the large menu. It took us a while to decide because there were so many options! The ambiance was nice enough. Somewhere between classy decor but casual space. I'd definitely go here again for sushi and I'd try the other items too some time.

I ordered geisha roll, sakana roll, and a Mentaiko udon pasta. Rolls were delicious and fish was fresh. I was really craving western sushi rolls and this really hit the spot. Mentaiko udon wasn't overly fishy from what I usually expect from this dish but they make it much more creamy and rich which was so delicious. Definitely coming back to try out their nigiri and handrolls when I'm craving for that!

    Scallop Crudo, $16, minus $1.50HH – 5 Stars

After spending a day walking all around Volunteer Park, we went nuts at Sakana Sushi & Kitchen in Cap Hill, especially because we arrived during happy hour. All our dishes have a small discount, just enough to instigate over-ordering. Food was very good. They are not competing at the high end omakase sushi level. Instead, they have a mix of quality kitchen and sushi/sashimi dishes. I definitely recommend them for your sushi and Japanese food fix without breaking the bank. Service was kind and courteous. Our server asked for inputs, and I gave them honest feedback. They are several months old. I am rounding up my rating to a full 5 Stars to give them a bump. The restaurant has a basic and functional deco. I like that the tables are not very close together. The Food: Fried Oysters, $11, minus $1.25HH - 5 Stars Perfectly breaded panko friend oysters, this was one of our favorite dishes. Ika Geso "Squid Tentacle", $11, minus $1.25HH - 5 Stars I think a restaurant is paying respect to their culture when there is that one unusual dish that is most definitely not geared towards Americans. Squid tentacles definitely fit the bill. Also panko fried, it has a wonderful chew. Sauteed Garlic Shishito Peppers, $9, minus $1.25HH - 4 Stars With all the fried foods, I told myself I need to order a veggie. This is it. :) It's perfectly executed. Takoyaki, $8, minus $1.25HH - 2 Stars This dish was the only failure of the night. Way too much sauce. It's swimming in sauce. It's a waste of sauce and made the takoyaki balls soggy. This is an easy fix. Crunch Portobello, $9, minus $1.25HH - 3.5 Stars The execution is good, but the portobello flavor is overwhelmed by the panko breading. We still liked it, but it's not obvious on what is inside. Salmon Usuzukuri, $15, minus $1.50HH - 4 Stars Served over edamame puree, the salmon with the balsamic soy sauce is very good. My hubby was ok with this, but I don't like the mouthfeel between the smooth silky salmon mixed with the coarseness of the edamame puree. Maybe if the edamame is super-smoothly-blended, it would be better. Tuna Tatiki, $16, minus $1.50HH - 5 Stars Served with guacamole/tataki sauce, I loved this dish. The guac is a smoother texture than the edamame, and this dish was a much better combination. The lightly seared tina was perfectly executed. Scallop Crudo, $16, minus $1.50HH - 5 Stars Served with lemon zest & ikura ponzu, the texture, taste, and feel of this dish is spot on. Avocado Bomb, $10, minus $1.25HH - 5+ Stars This was their most creative and unusual dish, and I loved the combination! They are fried avocado halves filled with cream cheese, spicy tuna, and crab meat. By golly, this is so good!

This place was on my "to try" list for so long, and I'm so glad I went. Both rolls we got were flavorful and good quality, the deep fried mushrooms were ok. Can't ever say no to deep fried items, but would try something else on their appetizers list. For the star of the show though, the mentai udon was nice and hot, creamy and was the most memorable. Also before we ordered, they gave us chips and an edamame dip which was good! Overall I highly recommend trying. Price wise, it was actually fairly affordable considering the area and food items!

Simple yet so appetizing. Sushi rolls were both fresh and well prepared. The nigiri was also great and fresh- not fishy. The sweet and warm Japanese curry felt like a welcomed hug on a cold and brisk May afternoon. The biggest complaint was actually the cutlets - despite a nice crunch to it, something felt a little off. Like the cutlets were a bit old or were previously reheated or something. I had to drench each slice with curry to fully enjoy the meal. At the end of the day, two regular-sized curry dishes actually made us quite full and content.
