Came in during soft opening for AYCE and honestly... we figured this place out fast. The crudo is where they shine. The escolar crudo and pepper tuna crudo were easily the best things we had--bright, flavorful, and the kind of dishes you reorder immediately (we did). The seared salmon sashimi was unreal--melt-in-your-mouth, 10/10, no notes. Not everything hit, though. The serrano chicken robata tasted like it had been sitting and reheated, and the pepper tuna sashimi just didn't compare to the crudo version. Same with the albacore--better as crudo, not worth it as sashimi. The beef short rib appetizer was a standout--super tender and way better than you'd expect from an AYCE menu. Drinks were a win too. We came on a Tuesday and even though they're still in soft opening, the manager honored the $6 martini deal, which was a really nice touch. The Hanami Mommy Martini and Cherry Blossom Elixir were both light, refreshing, and not overly sweet (and the cherry blossom one literally smells like roses... obsessed). We also tried all the mochi--honestly, when is mochi not good? But this was above par. Super soft, really well done, and mango definitely reigns supreme. What really stood out though was the experience. We ended up chatting with one of the partners, who was incredibly kind and accommodating, and you can tell they actually care about what they're building here. We met some friends here for Easter and had a great dinner. This was our first time to this location our friends have been here before they love it. Everything was clean and looked nice. The staff was quick to our table and answered all of our sushi questions. Every time we finish the plate she was quick to come to the table and remove the dishwasher to clear for room. I've been coming here for years whenever i crave good quality sushi for a good price this is the place to go! The place is very unique from as soon as you walk in the door you see a wall full of drawings each guest has left behind with lots of creative ideas this shows the character this establishment has imbedded into its core. The staff are very attentive and kind you'll most likely be seated right away it's never too busy id say it always has just the right amount of guest anytime i visit. I usually order the all you can eat buffet and they have lots of variety to choose from including side dishes and desert there's something on the menu for everyone. My beloved Sushi Junai 2 has gone downhill and I can't recommend it any longer :( First, I loved this place up until 2020. That's when I noticed the quality sharply declined. The fish didn't taste good. Occasionally even getting BAD fish. My nostalgic brain wouldn't let it go. I still went once a year or so in hopes it would still be good. It's not. This place was epic for group dinners, birthday celebrations, work lunches, etc. Sharing AYCE rolls, the good location, and definitely the easy parking were totally my jam. My favorite AYCE sushi place in Austin and they have a lot of variety. This is probably where I would recommend a beginner or novice come to try sushi for the first time especially if the have an aversion to raw fish because they have so many options and they are very fast, efficient, friendly, and hygenic. There is sometimes a wait on Fridays and Saturday nights so I recommend checking ahead of time to get added to the yelp waitlist. I love that people do different art and post them and they can even store your chopsticks if you are a regular. They may not have the highest quality raw fish but it's still a good quality given the price. I don't always do AYCE here because I can only eat about 2 rolls myself and that's about $25 whereas the AYCE is about $40 per person. read more

Where do I start. I go to a lot of restaurants, this has to be one of the my least enjoyable experiences in Austin. Let me preface by saying I have a shellfish allergy and when I asked the waitress about how they manage people with shellfish allergies she said she'd never had a customer with a shellfish allergy before. I asked if they fried the shrimp in a separate pan from not shellfish and she didn't know (the manager confirmed they do) when I asked him how they manage shellfish all he pretty much said 'your problem not mine'. One side of the menu with appetisers and sushi bar items have names but no ingredient listed so you have no idea wha you are ordering. Hands down the best AYCE sushi in Austin (and I'm pretty sure we've tried them all). We drive all the way across the city on a regular basis to eat here. Their menu has a very wide selection, especially of nigiri and rolls, which are of course the cornerstone of a sushi restaurant, but they also have plenty of great appetizers and additions to keep things interesting -- we often get the karaage, seaweed salad, and miso soups to complement our meal. The nigiri has always been excellent, fresh and delicious. They have quite a few creative rolls -- the Salmon Holic and the Touchdown are two of our favorites, and you're sure to find something new and delicious if you look. Their new menu added hand-rolls, and those are stellar as well (the No Name is my personal favorite). The service is consistently friendly and quick (we go there a lot and we've never had bad or grumpy service, and even after years of going we're often surprised with how quickly our order is prepared). All in all, after trying hundreds of restaurants around Austin, this is definitely among our top 10. We definitely ate more than our moneys worth and left super full! Overall, the sushi was very good for an AYCE special. The sparse, underwhelming (and chilly, wear a sweater!) interior shouldn't fool you, the sushi is legit. The pieces come out fast and are delicious. I have tried almost ALL the AYCE sushi spots here in Austin, and I would say Sushi Junai 2 has its ups and downs. I visited for the first time yesterday at around 1:30 PM. Big space with lots of tables to accommodate families of all sizes. Casual place for friends, family, any occasion. For ~27$ lunch price, I thought it was pretty good. One thing I liked right away was that the service is pretty fast. You write down your order on a piece of paper and give it to your server. The food comes out pretty quickly. Now, the food was hit or miss dependent on the order. I enjoyed the nigiri especially the sweet salmon and yuzu yellowtail, however I did not like the rolls. I ordered three rolls to give them all a chance, but the rice is VERY dense, chewy, and too much. No outstanding roll flavors or combinations, and the thing that stood out the most was how dense the rice was. On the flip side, the nigiri had an AMAZING fish:rice ratio. Almost 2:1 in the sense that you get a thick, tender, good quality piece of fish and a little knob of rice. Luckily with the nigiri, you get little rice and cannot feel the denseness of it. The fish was not fishy (if you get what i mean). The garlic tuna was not very fishy, but the red snapper was. The salmon was very good, namely the sweet salmon. Here is the breakdown of each menu item, my thoughts, and if it was a must order(standout): 1) Sweet Salmon Nigiri: STANDOUT - A seared salmon with a sweet torched mayo on top. Smoky and sweet. 2) Garlic Tuna Nigiri: Good if you like tuna, not too tuna tasting if you get what i mean bc sometimes tuna is very sharp but this one was not. The garlic sauce was quite good too. A bit of a ponzu taste. 3) Yuzu Yellowtail Nigiri: Good quality yellowtail and the zesty yuzu sauce was nice and refreshing. 4) Salmon Nigiri: Good quality salmon 5) Garlic Salmon Nigiri: Same sauce as the tuna one, but salmon version. 6) Monkey Brain: STANDOUT - This came as a surprise for me because it is a deep fried ball of imitiation crab with mushroom and cream cheese. This sounds and looks heavy, but it was lighter than expected because of the thin crispy fried outside. The flavors were that sweet eel sauce spicy mayo combo that you see in most rolls. It is warm and delicious, very flavorful. I ate 4 of these! 7) The Shit - There is no description so I just ordered it, essentially it is a deepfried meat log..not my taste 8) Screaming "O" - another no description menu item - it was basically tuna sashimi (i did not like this one very much) 9) Ex-Girlfriend Roll, Dancing Eel, Takedown roll - these rolls have potential, but the rice is just so dense. The best out of the three was the dancing eel roll. 10) Desserts = vanilla ice cream, brownie ice, affogato, and green tea ice cream - I tried all of them. The vanilla ice cream is used in the brownie ice and affogato. It is a midtier ice cream, good, but not great. Subpar type of vanilla ice cream but nothing to complain about. The affogato was my favorite of all of them. I do not recommend the green tea flavored ice cream because it did not taste like green tea at all. It was kind of just sweet. I much preferred the vanilla and its variants. The brownie was quite nice as well. Note: I went once. Would I go again? Maybe if I'm in the area and if I want nigiri. read more

Needless to say this place has been added to my saved list :) They have a large selection to choose from although not everything is available if you come for lunch. This place came highly recommended and I can see why. If you're a nigiri fan you will love it here. I love the rice to fish ratio. No big chunks of rice here. You get your money's worth for sure. Some of them come with a sauce on top which took it to the next level. We tried so many things that, believe it or not, I actually didn't get pics of everything. The menu is huge. Some of the appetizers were hit and miss. Skip the bulgogi fries! We didn't get too many rolls because I was told they are pretty hefty in size. Had to pass on the ramen and udon as well. The hand rolls were packed which isn't usually a bad thing, but it did make it hard to eat. It kept falling apart. Warning if you get the poki (poke), it is a huge portion. Like a rice bowl full of fish and seaweed. I ordered it at the end of my meal and struggled to finish it. Delicious though! They have green tea ice cream for dessert which is a major plus for me. How have I never reviewed this place before? We go here quite often. This place is our favorite AYCE sushi place. They have a huge menu and the food comes out pretty quick. We have gone here on Christmas Day a couple of times as well. They are very accommodating. If we come with a bigger group, I try to call at least an hour before and they will have a table all set up for us. AYCE comes with app, entrees and desserts. The service is always excellent. They have a variety of table sizes and I have never had an issue getting seated with a large group. This is one of our favorite restaurants for celebratory dinners. It's hard to beat the $37 a head dinner/full menu price AYCE. The service has been great when actually interacting with the hosts/servers, but it can be sparse at times due to how busy they get. That being said, we've always been able to order and eat our fill within the 90min time limit. The interior is clean. spacious, and the walls are beautifully decorated. They've definitely stepped up with ordering ingredients, as a common issue used to be them running out of salmon belly very early into dinner service. We've been told this hasn't happened nearly as much recently, and have caught them at a good stock the last two occasions we've eaten here. In terms of specific menu items: Salmon Belly Nigiri - 10/10 - Absolutely the reason we come back, the fish is cut thick, and the quality is insane. It literally melts in your mouth from how fatty it is! Eel (Unagi) Nigiri - 9/10 - Insanely smokey, very tender, almost perfect bites. Can be overpowering, as the only downside. Garlic Salmon, Garlic Tuna, and Sweet Shrimp Nigiri - 8/10 - Much, much better than what you'd find in a typical per-plate restaurant, in my opinion. Not as spectacular as the aforementioned salmon belly, but that's setting a pretty high bar. Shrimp (Ebi) Nigiri 7/10 - A bit dry, but the size is nice, and tastes great. Affogato - 9/10 - Perfect way to round out a dinner. Vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate sauce, and a moat of presumably hickory coffee, all in a buffet style styrofoam cup. Heavenly. Chef Special Sushi Rolls - 8/10 - This is definitely how they try to fill you up. I'd say don't order more than one per person if you want to get full immediately. There's almost an entire side of the menu dedicated to them, so there's going to be at least one that fits your tastes. They're all huge and pretty decently packed with rice. They taste incredible, though! Personal favorites are the Longhorn and Black Jack rolls. Pork Belly Skewer - 0/10 - I don't know what happened, but the last time we ordered this it was nauseating. Dry, leathery meat that didn't taste quite right. Only thing that made it edible was the mystery sauce. Overall, great place for any occasion. We always look forward to our next visit! read more

Their rolls are regular size and doesn't lack flavor like other AYCE sushi places around. I love all the different options you can have with food. the reason for this one star review is simply for one server in particular tonight. the food was amazing and every other server we dealt with besides the one given to us was perfect. we had a server tonight who did not gives us any attention and help when we needed it. picked up our note pad when currently writing and the trainee who's first night was that night we saw more then the original server as well. our server constantly was messing up our order. my fiance went 10 minutes without food after we all turned in our note pads and got our food at the same time. He then wanted to be very unprofessional and rude to me and my entire party. I told him there's my sign and to take the 18%. He then kept wanting to egg on the conversation in a unprofessional tone and have an attitude to which he stepped into my face saying "do we have a problem". how unprofessional for a place we've been going to for years. Food is delicious- service isn't too bad- ambiance is chill with plenty of space. Parking is plentiful. If you go for lunch/dinner they have a $30 all you can eat. It's an amazing deal for sushi. The food here is very good (VERY), but the Health Inspection Health Code Score is way too low. I usually won't even park outside of a restaurant with low health scores. It signals to me they don't care enough to offer an attempt at serving you the best culinary experience. (For instance, the tabletop was sticky in multiple sections.) I only visited this restaurant because I was attending an event. They have all you can eat sushi brought to your table. The staff is friendly, but they have no system for correctly fulfilling orders. When the whole table orders the endless dishes - the service falls apart. The event was fun, so the staff's chaos did not ruin anything. Note: They will also accept a reservation without being able to accommodate you - so beware. Again, the food is delicious - except for the Ramen. Do not order the ramen. The ramen should not be a menu item here. In a nutshell, Junai needs to focus on sanitation and all operational processes. This place could easily become a 5 star establishment, but they don't seem to want that. read more

For AYCE sushi in Austin Sushi Junai is by far my favorite. The portions do run small but it gives you the opportunity to try more options. I love the Vegas Roll, Sweetkiss Roll, Starbucks Roll, Cucumber Passion Roll, Monkey Brains, Sweet Salmon Sushi, Sweet Shrimp Sushi, Beef Sushi, Salmon Belly Sushi... the list goes on and on. read more

I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant, let alone had much more than HEB sushi, so I was blown away by this first experience. I wasn't familiar with the different types of sushi so the waiter informed me on what was what and I tried a little bit of everything. I absolutely loved the salmon nigiri and the salmon tempuras (huge salmon fan if you couldn't tell), but just about everything we tried was fresh and incredibly delicious.
