The food tasted fresh and good quality. The crab ragoon was my only disappointment, it was a fried crab stick with loads of cream cheese and was pretty heavy and not quite what I was expecting. The sushi pieces were super tiny, the wasabi paste is tasteless, and the Ala cart order sweet shrimp is already dried on the top, not fresh at all. The red bean ice cream tastes so different than other Japanese restaurants....... No red beans but found some plum-tasting stuff in the ice cream. Went here for my birthday last month and the ambiance is definitely stunning. Food was great, our waiter was a really cool guy, love the all you can eat options. We always go to Sushi Haya because their rolls, sushi and food are great. We were there today and we placed our order and the handrolls that came out, it was mostly rice...barely any meat. We addressed our concern to our server and the chef came out to prove his point that the rice is the same amount each time. We showed him a picture of what we had 2 weeks ago to the one we had today and it's disappointing that he would rather prove his point than apologize. You can tell that meat/fish is less and they're trying to fill the rolls with so much rice so you would not order as much. You get filled up with rice instead of the real sushi. The service here is super fast and attentive. The food is usually very fresh and the value you get with AYCE sushi is something you can't beat. I recommend the peppercorn tuna and the spicy girl roll. Keep in mind, they have two different menus for lunch ($20) and dinner($30). I've been a few times now and have really enjoyed it every time. I always opt for the all you can eat sushi. It is not a buffet style so it does take a little longer to get your food. You sit down, choose from the menu, as many pieces or rolls as you want, and they make them fresh on the spot for you so I don't really mind the short wait. The staff has been super friendly and the restaurant is very clean. I've only been for lunch and for the $20 price tag it's going to be a regular stop for me! read more

This is a relatively new Japanese restaurant off 99 and Kuykendall. There's decent variety on the a la carte menu but what this place is quickly getting known for is the $30 per person all-you-can-eat menu. I can see you cringing. Don't worry, it's not the Golden Corral of sushi or one of those abysmal sushi carts strapped to the end of a Chinese buffet. It's more like Mikoto off I-10. It's a sit-down place where you can order from a server as many times as you want. Our experience there started really well and declined a bit, but if you're not too picky you can have a lot of fun here. The AYCE menu has a decent variety of starters, sushi, and some desserts. The appetizers we ordered were all really good. Edamame and seaweed salad were solid if very standard, but the peppered tuna was really nice. There are also some dumplings and spring rolls available. I'd say Mikoto's appetizer selection has a few more interesting items, but Haya does fine here. There is a small selection of cooked items other than seafood. One of our party ordered the fried rice and Hibachi steak. It's not a lot of steak, but I thought it and the rice were pretty good for an AYCE. The sushi/sashimi section features about fifteen different items. Staples like salmon, a few tuna varieties, shrimp, and yellowtail are there. Slightly more exotic items like eel and octopus round out the offerings. No really fancy things like scallops though. You can order it either sushi or sashimi style and each serving is one piece, but you can order as much as you want. It's not bad. The pieces are modestly sized but seem fresh and we enjoyed ours. There are several maki rolls, hand rolls, and special rolls. We were full enough that we ordered only a few rolls, but we must have ordered the wrong ones because it was here that our meal lost some luster. The biggest bummer of the bunch looked great on paper; the Lake Charles roll features crawfish, cream cheese, and jalapeno, all deep fried in a batter and topped with spicy mayo and eel sauce. I'd pictured a roll that ate with a light crunch like perhaps one encased in tempura crumbles, but what you get is something in a hard batter that seems to get tougher with each chew. Unless they change the recipe, I cannot recommend it unless you have a great dentist. I next decided to stay away from fried, so I went for the tantalizingly named Surf and Turf. This roll is filled with spicy tuna and topped with Angus beef, a garlic sauce, and green onions. The spicy tuna was ok but the beef, garlic, and onions didn't really stand out and it really undercut the vision the menu painted. Next time I'll give some more traditional rolls a try. We finished off with some green tea and red bean ice cream. Nothing spectacular, but it pulled Haya out of the dive. Overall, a good meal with a couple pitfalls. The restaurant is clean and spacious with several tables and booths and the decor is pleasantly modern with a casual dress code. Our server was focused on the orders and efficient, regularly refilling our drinks. Despite the large orders they must be getting from each table the food arrives in reasonable time. We celebrated my birthday with 20 guests, 3 kids. With a cost of 30$+pp to eat all you can and order sushi. It took them over 30 minutes to fulfill our order. I've also noticed the time constraint of 1.5 h they gave us yet they were very slow to prepare. They should have more people to prepare the simple sushi roll/sashimi and fulfill the EAYC service they offer. It seemed like it was a sushi WAIT ALL You can instead. We decided to have a celebratory night and figured sushi is sometimes a safer choice to eat out as long as the restaurant knows how to either accommodate or has an idea of what is gluten free since I have a food allergy. I told them I was gluten free and had a severe food allergy. I let them know in advance. They brought me gluten free soy sauce so I assumed they could accommodate at the very least. The waitress said the chef surely could. So I asked her what was gluten free and she said she had no idea but she would tell the chef I had an allergy so they could adjust any roll I order. They bring out two rolls and one is covered in spicy mayo as well as eel sauce (not gluten free). I told her to please take the roll back and explained the sauces were not gluten free. After halfway through the second roll I realize that it has kani (crab meat) which is also not gluten free. She didn't even apologize. She just asked if she wanted me to make another. I told her please no because the last two were going to make me very sick. They charged us full price, no apology, so I won't be back. The only thing safe to eat is the sashimi and gluten free soy sauce on request. Otherwise they have no idea on what they are doing for food allergies. I was excited to see an "AYCE" sushi concept so close to home, & thought I'd take my kids here to eat since they'd just opened. Unfortunately, we probably won't be back. From the three guys (maybe owners or management??) standing by the door chain smoking cigarettes leaving the smell permeating inside and around the area my children had to walk - to the not so friendly staff seating us - the experience was so off putting, we ended up leaving to eat elsewhere. Chicken fried rice - taste just like Japanese chicken fried rice on the hibachi Yellow tail - I've had better, didn't like that the jalapeño was cut into strips so that made it hard to eat. Yellowtail wasn't of the greatest quality. Takoyaki - Hard pass. The inside was just mushy and the flavor wasn't there. The balls tasted like freezer burn. I've had a lot better before. Shaggy Dog roll- quality of H‑E‑B. Definitely had better. Spicy Girl roll- had no distinct flavor that I could remember. Kiss of Fire roll - same. They did not have Mussels available. The soy sauce they didn't have a light version with less sodium. The wasabi is not fresh, dry and you had to use a lot to get the flavor out of it. The Ginger was just okay. The hibachi items were amazing! The rolls weren't remarkable and tasted like grocery store quality. Rolls tasted the same with no distinct flavors that separated them apart. This new sushi place had their grand opening--I stopped in to scope it out for potential family meals. The sticker price is pretty high, but they absolutely deliver value and I think they're going to do well. Sushi Haya has an extensive menu--lots of sushi, hibachi, and Chinese dishes. They also have an all-you-can-eat option for $29.95 and I just had to try it. Making the most of this option requires patience and strategy. It is not a buffet--they make most things fresh and discourage wasting food (besides, it's rude). I didn't know what I was in for, but I learned from my experience and watched a couple of guys who were obviously regulars. I'll try to pass some of that along here. Many of the plates are small. The salads and appetizers are single servings, the robata is one skewer (I'd estimate about 2.5 oz) and the hibachi is a small handful of pieces--the protein ones come with no vegetables. This encourages ordering a lot of different things, which is great. If it is busy you might want to order several items early--the regulars near me did that. On the other hand, the sushi rolls are full-size and they won't make short ones (I asked), so that's better for sharing. The servers bring items out when they're ready, so they will be making many trips to your table. Treat them well. I sampled soup, salads, robata, hibachi, sushi, and dessert, and all of it was excellent. Beautifully presented, delicious, and you could tell how fresh it was. I want to specifically shout out the Beef Tataki--sashimi beef in a spicy sauce that was absolutely fantastic and perfectly portioned. And don't skip dessert. They have tempura banana, oreo, and ice cream, as well as ice cream alone. I had the tempura banana and loved it. It was not too sweet and the tempura was crisp but heavy enough to hold up to the banana moisture. I had it with green tea ice cream--if you haven't tried that it is a must. If you're a light eater they have plenty of menu options that are priced in line with other restaurants. But the all you can eat option is absolutely worth the money. The decor inside is very attractive and upscale. Quiet Japanese pop music and only one TV so you can talk to your dining partners. The bathrooms were clean and ready, and the service was a major feature. Can recommend it to anyone. read more

Very poor service and it's disheartening since i love sushi. Me and my partner were the only POC there and we could see and feel the difference in our service from the other tables that got speedy and nice service that wasn't people of color. Our server was very slow, had to ask for my drink 3 times, and she was just wasn't attentive at all. I normally automatically tip $20 or more every time i go out but the service was so poor that she didn't even get 10%. Sushi with a side of racism unfortunately. We did the All You Can Eat menu, which is an amazing deal and gets tons of bang for your buck- this is just my portions!
