With so many new Mexican restaurants in the area, I've taken Super Mex for granted. I used to frequent Super Mex when I lived a couple blocks away, but now live closer to Leo's and usually want to try other places when I'm in the mood for this cuisine. There is something to be said about a casual and simple joint that's been open in downtown Long Beach for nearly a couple decades. They've even expanded to other areas like Lakewood, Whittier and Bixby Knolls. I was reminded by Yelp friend, John K, to pay a visit for curbside pick-up since it's a bit of a stretch for him. It was easy ordering take-out through Grubhub. Much like other places, the menu is slightly limited during this time. However, they had all the options of their legendary wet burritos. I ordered the Chili Verde and it was as ginormous as they usually are, stuffed with all the fixings: beans, rice, lettuce and topped with cheese and guac. Bf was craving chile relleno, and though they didn't have it, they offered the next best choice, their popular Mixed Fajita of steak, chicken and shrimp with a side of tortillas, rice & beans. The portions are generous and dishes hit the spot. They even threw in extra tostada chips and salsa in our order. Thirsty? They're also selling soft drinks, horchata, jamaica, beer and margaritas with purchase. Nice to see a few others waiting for their food as well- a good sign that they're getting steady business! The combo #28 is a taco , enchilada and relleno, the relleno is a poblano loaded with cheese quite good and i am not a super poblano fan in the relleno. The enchiladas red sauce was good, not great,the burger meat something in there had a sweet taste. Far and away the tacos were the stars. The chicken was raved about and the beef was well seasoned and plentiful. It was a tremendous taco, crunchy greatness. Ma had the cocido soup, it should come with the standard California warning of no lifeguard on duty... The bowl was large to say the least. Drowning hazard, you could be saved with the ears of corn the potatoes and the zucchinis and ears of corn... Say nothing of the chuck roast. A solid full pound of meat was in that soup. Standard American Mexican, combos, burritos and whatnot. The chips and salsa were good. It's a salsa verde and the chips are actual whole corn tortillas. I had a cheese enchilada, Shredded Beef enchilada and a shredded beef taco. All were delicious and hot and cheesy and gooey. The refried beans were also very creamy. Craving crunchy tacos to go, my neighbor recommended Super Mex thought I give it a go. My food was piping hot and securely package (no leaking food or sauce) well in resealable containers. This particular also included besides my 2 chicken tacos, rice/beans, side of about 4 corn tortillas and one enchilada. In addition I added to 1 order chili Toreados, chips w/ salsa,, and tomatillo sauce. The rice and beans were well seasoned and delicious so good I wanted more. The chicken enchilada was moist with white moist chicken meat. The red sauce didn't over take but complimented by only apply it evenly as well as sparely. I love cutting into the favorable tasty enchilada. As for the chicken tacos they were stuffed with seasoned moist white chicken meat, I had to pull some of the meat out of each taco. (Good problem to had I just mixed it into my rice and beans). I would have love for the taco shell to have been a bit more on the crunchy side. Love alternating each bit with their well seasoned chili peppers which had a sting of fire which was an added bonus. Another compliment was the crunchy tortillas and the sauce that came with them was delicious. Complimentary corn tortillas to which I saved for another go at completing part 2 of this combo as this was a great deal of food. It's a good kinda of problem as I look forward to eating there leftovers tomorrow. I those seasoning will have surely kicked in by then. read more

As I sat by the window of Super Mex, I missed getting a photo of the murder (flock) of crows. I missed getting a photo of a flock of bicycle riders headed toward the beach. I missed the blimp flying low overhead. I didn't miss the bus (see photo). Indeed, I missed the first time that I had Super Mex salad. Perhaps that earlier rendition was from a particularly inspired cook. Someone on Yelp recently downplayed the value of updates. Very illogical. Too many nuances can be present to say "I got this" and slap shut the astute book. Albondigas Soup was excellent. Vegetables were cut as I do, I don't dice much. So you got a nice mouthful of perfectly cooked celery, carrot or potato in a tasty broth. The meatballs were tender and plentiful. Good job. The soup and the wonderfully congenial staff, Gabriela, Xavier et al, made this a very pleasant lunch. Bf said five stars. I'll skip the salad next time. read more

So it ended up being the place that's across the street from where my friends were staying and they say hey let's go here we went there a wile back and yeah so that's how it came about being Super! We came in on a Sunday evening it was kinda dead we sat down right away and we were instantly taken care of by Fernando who went out of his way to make sure we were welcomed as well as taken care of the entire time we were here he did a Super job and was very friendly they are lucky to have him as a server! Having not been here before and just ending up here I didn't even have time to look it up on this handy Yelp app before sitting down so once the chips came out it was Check-in time and what to my surprise did appear nothing short of a $5 off Check-In Offer when you spend $25 booyah! So after a few minutes our drinks came out and to my surprise they give you a shot on the side and not in your drink I don't think I've seen anywhere do that before but hey at least you know your getting a whole shot lol! After a bit more time our food came out and wile my wet shredded beef burrito looked yummy it was about average when it comes to Mexican food as it had a good amount of filler inside meaning lettuce which is something I feel just doesn't go well with a wet burrito when it's tucked away inside but either way the burrito was yummy but definitely about average when it comes to these types. For me a good margarita makes a Mexican restaurant & this margarita lacked salt & flavor!! It was small and seemed fit of ice and not tequila. However the SALSA here is quite good! I have done take out from here so many times. During the Pandemic I noticed they changed their menu and the prices were higher. When so many people are hurting and been affected by COVID, is not the time to raise your prices. The other day I stopped in because I wanted three hard shell beef tacos. Right on the corner of Alamitos and first street in LB this little place boasts a full bar, a full restaurant and friendly service. Food is good she got the veggie quesadilla, (although I got the chicken combo the other day and it was kinda of over saturated pulled apart almost like it was from a can lol) I had two margs this night and was on my @$$.
