Great food. Delivery service awful. Ordered a medium burger. It arrived as a hockey puck. Can usually roll with it but this was inedible. Called to see if we could get a replacement and was told, as if the man on the phone was in my kitchen inspecting the burger next to me, "this is medium" and there aren't other options. Worked in restaurants a lot of years so am always dismayed when I approach a manager politely and am essentially told to go fly a kite. This neighborhood restaurant has a lot of good different dishes. They are kids friendly the service is very familiar. Their salmon tuna is delicious, they have a wide variety of wraps # 18 is my favorite. They also have daily dinner specials. On my last visit to this place, it has change so much. I grew up in a town full of diners, and it's important to me to have one nearby. Sunset Diner is a scant five minutes' walk from my place, and I'm glad. Not just for the proximity, but for the quality. I don't think I've ever ordered something from them that I didn't like. Some things--the chicken kebab over rice, or the hollandaise sauce on the eggs benedict--punch well above their weight, and everything else is better than serviceable. The red sauce they put on Italian dishes is a little too sweet for me, but that's about as far wrong as anything ever gets. Delivery is prompt (as I said, they're incredibly close) and has never been wrong yet. The staff are friendly and helpful. My only issue with Sunset is its operating hours. They're open from 7 to 7, and often start the day a bit late. To me, a true diner is a 24-hour joint, or at least more than 12. To be fair, I think they may have recently changed their hours to be open until 10 pm, which would be welcome. read more

I come here whenever I am on the way back from Williamsburg. The food is always consistent and the prices are very fair. Honestly this is one of my favorite things local spots late night. I don't think I had the "full" dining experience Jane might have had. I just stopped by tonight, paperback in hand, for a sit-down sandwich around 8:30 p.m. One waitress was taking a smoke break outside. Inside was another. And just one diner, finishing his meal. When I asked if they were still serving, the waitress said no, then asked what I wanted. "A ham sandwich," I said. She could sneak that in. So I ordered a ham sandwich on white with lettuce, tomato, and mustard to go. While the cook prepared my sandwich, the waitress took a phone order for two chicken soups. She could sneak those in, too. My ham sandwich came to all of $3.85, which you can't much beat. I took it home and ate it on the couch while watching the Twilight Zone episode with Buster Keaton. It was a fine sandwich and came wrapped with a cucumbery pickle. My favorite kind! (Although a half sour will do in a pinch.) I have to return for a sit-down meal to leave a review without reservations, but for a corner diner just a few blocks away from my house, I'm glad to have come across the Sunset. Our party of 4, visiting from West Coast, had a delightful dinner here tonight. I had delicious meatloaf. The meal came with a generous green salad, mashed potatoes, and spinach (other choices for green veggie were also available). Every bite was good and I had leftovers for lunch tomorrow. I don't know what's happened to this place, they used to be great, but for the third time in a row they have F-ed up my order big time. Two orders ago i ordered the meatloaf, which was awesome before, but this last time they served it cold, cold mashed potatoes, cold beans and hardly any gravy. The next order was the pork chops, which i've also had before but this time they were sliced paper thin, extremely dry and burnt, and no accompanying sauce that the decription said it included. They gave me matzah ball soup instead of french onion which we paid for, and broccoli mixed with corn- gross! Tonight's order was calamari and a filet of sole sandwich. The sandwich came dry with no tartar or mayo, even though i ordered mayo on the side. The calamari came with lemon and NO marinera sauce for dipping. Some of the calamari were refridge cool. Wtf am i supposed to do with plain cold calamari? We will not order here anymore. I've had it!!! read more

I went there when I first moved to the neighborhood since it's one of the few late night spots open around me. Unfortunately, once I got my takeout order home I noticed they had messed up my order and the food looked disgusting. My quesadilla looked like a 2yr old made it, and the flavor made me gag. I couldn't even have more than 1 bite. The wings order was wrong. We ordered buffalo wings and they gave us plain wings with some sweet and sour sauce on the side. I have been there couple times and the place never failed... to fill me up. I love their breakfast menu, its cheap and comes with great selection. I always order the vegetarian omelet which comes with tomato, mushroom and broccoli with 3 egg whites + home fries. it is amazing even for a meat eater like me. (and i cant never finish the entire plate at once ) the lunch menu is mainly sandwiches around 7-8 dollars. Pretty good stuff. LOVE THIS PLACE! Solid diner - you just have to know what to order. Their cheeseburger is cooked to perfection, and VERY juicy. I also tried their turkey club sandwich, which was very tasty and on the healthier side, though that may have been somewhat negated when I ordered it with waffle fries with cheddar cheese melted on top. Whoops :) Now for menu items I would stay away from. Fajitas were not well received by those who ordered them at our table. The paninis also were a bit odd- did not look like traditional paninis, mostly because the bread was way too thin. What really made this diner was the service - our waitress was bubbly with jus the right amount of sass, AND she calls you honey/sweetie/love, which always makes me happy. Also behind the counter is a cute old man, who insisted that we sample his rice pudding. In fact, he let us all try spoonfuls of rice pudding and said if we didn't agree with him that it was the best rice pudding, we wouldn't have to buy it. Standard diner fare at the expected prices. I was a regular a few years back while working on scripts and it seems the mouthier of the waitresses have left or cut back their shifts considerably. Personally, I think that's a loss. It's a diner - you have to expect some attitude. They never minded if I gave it right back to them. Cynthia still works there occasionally, and she was always good for a smart remark. I preferred the rough-around-the-edges types to the mainly haughty Polish girls with no sense of humor, but to each his own. The food is still on point.
