A friend has been recommending this place for years, I kept getting it confused with Spud (whose food is decent but not great) and declined to go with her. She clarified the location and I am so glad I gave them a try, they have wonderful service and delicious food. The owners are friendly, generous and kind. I stopped in close to closing time and they encouraged me to stay and finish my meal, I felt bad and didn't want to keep them longer than necessary so I left. We were out on Alki drive and noticed this restaurant along the way, so we decided to try it out. Don't expect to have anything other than just pretty much fried food, although the fried clams, fish and oysters and fries were delicious. The clam chowder was superb! My girlfriend ordered one of the salads, which was already pre-made and just in the fridge, which wasn't that good. This is my Quintessential fish and chips joint. Its made fresh for you each time, ALWAYS perfect, never greasy and the breading is just so. If you're looking for something lighter, try the Halibut shish kebab! But you should really just let go and partake in the amazing fried journey. The portion of the single fish n chips is pretty generous, the double isn't all that much bigger considering its $5 more. I pretty much HAVE to get the chowder cause its just delicious...simple and clean flavors yet creamy and heart warming. Tried the fried prawns recently, they were quite yummy too. But again, its about Fish and Chips! Its Cash Only and while I don't love that, I just want them to keep making my favorite food. So come prepared for a local gem. A very nice mom & pop place! Beware they only take cash but it definitely worth the trip to the ATM! Get at least 20 bucks so u can get medium cod (2 piece with fries = 10.00). Very nice place with excellent food! The prawns and fries were very good. The halibut my wife had was excellent and she loved the tartar sauce. I wold have given 5 stars because the cashier who was taking my order was interrupted by the boss ( I'm assuming) yelling at him. He (Mr. Interrupter) took over and continued to yell at him while trying to take my order. He got it wrong giving me the large instead of the small cod. Went there on a whim for a share-date with hubs. We check out random places and review them. This one was a return place! The clam chowder was amazing, as was the cod and fries! So I am spending the day on Alki and decide it is time to get dinner. There are several places to get fish and chips but we decided on Sunfish. This would be the 2nd chance for Sunfish to get my business. I am local and visit many restaurants on alki weekly. The first time we walked in the place had a sign that said cash only. Ok no problem. This was a couple of years ago and it's a small seasonal business, so cash only.... no big deal. Placed our order and as soon as the older man took the cash he went directly to cooking the order. No gloves, no pass by the sink, no sanitation! We looked at each other but decided since we already placed our order we would stay. Never went back. Today was the 2nd chance. We biked down, it's a lovely day! Went in, the place was not full but busy. We see that they now take cards. A plus. One of the workers was dealing with a customer about a wrong order. My husband and I were trying to check out the sanitation situation. No one else was in line. Just us. After about 4-5 minutes just looking and observing what was going on. Finally a worker got behind the cash register. I assumed we could now order. Wrong. The guy proceeded to pick up a receipts from the counter, straighten things up and the someone from the back got his attention with some salads to fill the cold case. He took the salads and filled the case. At this point you obviously don't want my money. I was out. We went to old standby Spuds. Where we always get friendly fast service with a smile. Sorry Sunfish.... you don't get a third try. Please don't support small businesses that don't give good service! read more

I called to ask about getting a table and told the man who answered the phone that I was with my team and had just wrapped up a program in the area. I've been coming to Sunfish for years now. When I lived up by Greenlake, I went to Spuds and then continued with it here on Alki. It is pretty darned greasy. Sunfish, on the other hand, has a very light batter and it is not greasy at all. I realize that some people like a thick, heavy batter but not me. Good fish does not need to be hidden. As for the no credit card policy, I am fine with that. Do you realize how much the credit/debit card fees are for businesses? There is a bank machine just a block away if you need cash! The notations that people make about "no eye contact" or "not friendly" in regards to the owners are really quite silly. Sure, they are all business but if you engage them in conversation, they are very pleasant and actually love to tell you a story or two. It may be a bit more costly than some fish places. Quality costs a bit more! read more

The two owners are brothers, retired fishermen, originated from Greece and for years they are standing behind the counter and doing the cooking. The best in the West! My Dad and I have tried them all, ie., all the fish and chip places in West Seattle and Burien. Hands down this is the best. These guys have been doing this forever and they are still friendly and quick. This is SO much better than the others, including Spuds and that's hard for me to say since that's almost like blasphemy to a born-and-raised Seattle-ite. I think Spuds went down hill when Ivar's bought them out and ironically Ivar's now has much better fish and chips. (Or, was that their diabolical plan all along????) Anyhow, back to Sunfish. Dad wants to go here first before any of the other places we've tried. He's 84 and been a long haul truck driver so he knows good food. Best fish around, nice light, non-greasy coating, and best fries around because they are REAL and not pressed from flakes. Their kabob and their fresh, fresh salads are SO good too! Older man at the cash register was so rude and tried to jip us. He told us that to get the medium cod fish and chips without the fries sub the clam chowder would equal to $15. We had to double check the math ourselves to point out to him that if that's the case then we might as well keep the fries and add on the clam chowder. Oh yeah. And a simple greeting of "hi, welcome, etc" or even eye contact to ackowledge that we're trying to order would have been nice. Was really thirsty and wanted to buy a drink but we didn't want to give him any more of our money. We've had better fish and chips and clam chowder down at Pikes Place Market. We've been to the other fish and chips place down the street a few times, so we decided to try a new spot. And this place has good reviews so it seemed promising. My BF and I ordered the 3 piece cod fish and chips and a large cup of clam chowder. The clam chowder was very tasty and it hit the spot. The fish and chips were good, but honestly, I'm not a big fan. The fish itself wasn't bad, but I just felt it tasted a bit bland, and I didn't like the breading that much. It was still good with the tartar sauce, but I was hoping it would be more seasoned. This place is known for their clam chowder so we had to try it, and we also ordered some Halibut fish and chips to share. The clam chowder, we both agreed, was really really good.
