Great tasting chowder and fried shrimp. High quality seafood that tastes wonderful. Now if you get one of the owner brothers of Sunfish, you will be insulted if you do not follow the unwritten rules of ordering fast. Found by tossing it back to them, they find this amusing and give you respect. Just not a Seattle thing, to banter when ordering. Love the food, one star off for the need of aggressive posturing when ordering. Hire people who enjoy working with the public, if they annoy you as owners. I haven't been here for a while but this place is money. every time I go there you know sometimes the owners you know they weren't real friendly for a while. but now they actually remember me in there you know they perked up a lot. they're Greek people and they I mean it's like they've been doing this since they were 5 years old it seems like. the food is unbelievable their service is good. the ambience while you're on alki so I don't think people b**** when they're on the water do they I've never heard of people b**** about it. The view is five stars so anything extra is extra. You can go see the baby Statue of Liberty out there. Our first time at this location and it won't be our last. I truly wasn't expecting much as the prices were very reasonable. I was craving fish & chips and my husband was craving pizza. This is directly across from Pegasus and considering we paid $40 for a pepperoni pizza, the prices at Sunfish were basically free - for seafood no less. Since I was there, I added on a clam chowder. I AM a foodie - (youtube cooking channel, blog, etc.) so it takes a bit to surprise me. I won't say this is Michelin star worthy, but I will say that the food here exceeded my expectations. Clam chowder and tartar sauce both tasted fresh and made from scratch - I would be very surprised if they weren't. The two gentlemen working were both efficient, but courteous. The fish and chips here is huge portions and cooked perfectly. The hidden gem though is the calamari. The pieces are huge, lightly breaded and fried and are amazing with the fresh homemade tarter. Sunfish has the great advantage of location. It is across from Alki Beach. That likely is what ensures regular business. The beach is the destination to visit in west Seattle. I was staying there overnight. I worked virtually from a park bench looking at the water, then took a lunch break. I was looking forward to the special, the fish kabob. There was such praise for it on Yelp. I was disappointed they were out. The menu on display has a handwritten note attached. It was okay. I had fried oysters. I can't pass up fried oysters and clams. The problem is at many places this uses shellfish that is not fresh but frozen. That is pointless, just rubbery protein. That was not the case here. They had Pacific oysters they assured me were fresh. You could tell. The breading was not too heavy. The French fries seemed hand made, or, if not, very high quality if they came out of a bag. I also had the clam chowder. It was good too. I would visit Alki Beach again, and I'd stay in west Seattle just for that opportunity. I'd eat here as well, because this initial visit persuades me it would be worth visiting for that special. read more

i don't know why i've come here for years and never written a review. i had a visitor in town so down to alki we went and if fish n chips were on the agenda then this is where i was going to take him. i won't go to the competition down the street, regardless of what people say. even though it's right in the thick of the alki main beach action, their food pales in comparison to the quality and quantity of sunfish just a block or two west. sunfish is always clean and the two men (brothers) who own it are so sweet. i've always wanted to try the sunfish special, which is definitely pricey at $17.95 but it's worth it for the amount of food it is. you could definitely share the skewer of grilled onions, peppers, shrimp and fish between two people but i ate part and took the other part home for later. the fish and chips are always good. there's plenty of condiments to choose from and the inside and outside tables are kept immaculate so it's never the kind of place that you don't want to stay in to eat, unless you have more motivation to walk across the street to the seawall or grassy area to be closer to the water and fend off the seagulls. i will always remain a sunfish groupie. they are my favorite fish 'n' chips place in west seattle. if you appreciate quality and quantity, you should drop your money no other place but here. read more

Mind you, the reason you come down to Alki is not going to be because of great food on the strip. It might be, instead, to breathe the fresh salt air and gaze at the Olympics or ships and ferries passing through the Sound. It was great down there this evening. So, food is a secondary consideration at Alki. I picked Sun Fish and ordered three pieces of halibut, chowder and a large soda (well, they call their large soda large, but it's actually rather svelte). This totals up to just under $20, and I didn't even order fries. The halibut was fresh-tasting, tender and came with a very good bread crumb coating that was light, and not greasy. The tarter sauce was creamy, but lacked zip or any real flavor. The chowder tasted only like heated milk. It had a slightly gelatinous texture, with hardly any clams. On the other hand, they give you plenty of saltine crackers! Uh oh, they don't take debit or credit cards anymore (even if there is still one if those little machines sitting by the cash register) But yeah, for quick fish and chips at Alki, Sun Fish works out okay. If you do choose to eat inside the restaurant (myself, I'd rather go down by the water with my eats), seating is ample. read more

I have been a big fan of Spuds for most of my life, I have put up with their unsanitary conditions, charging for tarter and ketchup, sky high prices, lack of seating....you name it. SOOO GOOOD! Visiting Seattle and stayed near the Space Needle. This place was across the river, so had to drive over the bridge. The weather was pretty bad that night but it was the only fish and chip place that was open after 8 pm. I personally love oysters and the first thing I read on the menu was "Oysters fresh daily". How could I pass this up. When I got my order the first thing I noticed were how HUGE the oysters were. The oysters were so fresh too. This was probably the best fried oysters I have ever tried in my life. Thinking about it and now I want more :/ My mom ordered the cod and fries. I know the owners of Sunfish have been fishermen since about the time of dirt and they really do know their fish and seafood. I'd say it's the best fish on the beach and definitely the best fish and chips on the beach, but (a) it ain't cheap and (b) it's not the best fish and/or fish and chips I've ever eaten. If you want a two piece fish and chips and a drink it'll set you back around $13. If you add chowder and a salad add at least $8 more. But that's a lot of food for one person. At $17.55, it ain't cheap. But, like I said, it was so freaking good the last time around, I had to know--could it possibly live up to my memory? Wait. Hold on. They take cards now? Win! It ended up being $22 with tip (a lot for just me). Again. Best seafood I've had in memory. I had no trouble finding a table inside (it had gotten a bit windy outdoors), and all the sauces I needed/could possibly want were available. And oh my God. It's everything I remembered and more. Whatever they're doing, they're doing it so so right. The vinegar and garlic sauce they have on each table is the JAM. The guys running the place were cleaning up on this particular Sunday, though I'm sure being on the waterfront (and having an established reputation on Yelp) helps business. This experience comes with a story. I put together two weeks' worth of directions for my trip, leaving myself plenty of surprises along the way. Down from Seattle to San Diego and back, and I find myself on Friday afternoon with a spare hour. Decided to knock an item off my Saturday list and check out the sunfish statue in West Seattle. Except when I get all the way there, I find out that I was headed to this restaurant, not a statue at all. Good thing I didn't come here Saturday morning, or it would have been closed. Since I'd come all this way for otherwise nothing, I made a dinner out of it. The guy behind the counter is unintentionally hilarious. Anything I ordered or asked about, he just smiled and said "Sure." I said "I wish I could try a little of everything." "Sure." "There's an item for that?" "Sure." (gestures at board) So I had two cod, two oysters, two prawns, all relatively lightly fried compared to what "fried" means back east. I get the impression Northwest fried is a lot lighter in general. The breading has a nice flavor but it really lets the seafood shine through. Of course, it's all as fresh as can be. The prices aren't outstanding, but they're reasonable enough. Wish I could also try the kalamari (need to spell it their way, they're Greek, after all!) and scallops. Funnily enough, the guy behind the counter instantly pegged me as NY area by the questions I asked, maybe my accent. He must not get many tourists in general in this area. The street is limited on available parking so after a detailed exam of the signage in the rear we concluded we could park in the back of the restaurant. While we were leaving though this crazy looking middle aged brunette storms up to my wife's window. She insisted these spots were tow eligible and we weren't welcome there. We were like ok where's the sign saying no parking? She didn't seem to know but she was red in the face angry. So other than that crazy confrontation the restaurant was awesome. The older gents at the counter were pleasant and polite. The food was piping hot and at our table fairly quickly. The clam chowder was thick and seasoned to our liking. We came in on a Saturday night, about 40 minutes prior to closing. We were hoping to get the combos (which included 1 piece of fish, 2 prawns, and 2 oysters). Those were sold out, so we went with the halibut and cod. I found the fish to be on the dry side, leaving it chewier than I prefer. But the batter was light and thin. Fries were a huge let down. and since it's half of the dish, I expected more. The tartar sauce was great though!! The owner, I'm assuming was off putting. Definitely lacking in customer service. Great fish and chips for this area! We had the cod and halibut with the order of fries. The fish was fresh, perfectly fried, and battered perfectly with the same going for the fries! The two Greek brothers keep it straight forward with you and keep their place running tip top. Wonderful family owned stand.
