Came here with a friend on a random Thursday night. Have a fantastic time. They have an all night drink special for five dollars and all of the drains on that happy hour menu are delicious. Had the Sorrel martini (margarita) and a mango martini and both were fantastic. My friend also ordered the jerk wings which were perfectly seasoned, perfectly spicy, and delicious. When we got there the place was already jumping, most likely from people who were still feeling like they needed more of the carnival vibes from Trinidad. Bartenders were pretty cool, laid back, fun, and attentive. I had a great time. The DJ was on point everybody was dancing. I want to say the spot closed at around 2 AM; it started clearing out around 1 o'clock 130-ish and up until then though, it was packed and jumping. The DJ played a lot of soca, and reggae, and contemporary music that you were here at carnival. The crowd was mostly African-American, Young 25 to 30-year-olds. It was definitely not hood at all everyone came out looking like they were there to have a good time not overdressed, not doing too much, but just dressed nicely enough to have a good time. Music entirely too loud but great jams. The food is great but the service leaves much to be desired. Our waiter Milani (? Tall Jamaican with an accent and a huge amount of hair: dreadlocks) was so underwhelming it was embarrassing. You see you have patrons that are courteous and friendly and you can't be bothered to crack a smile? You can't be bothered to say thank you? Even after I tipped him his undeserved 15% being a person who always tips 20 - he couldn't even make eye contact when asking me to sign the card. No one in the establishment could even say "thanks! See you next time" I would request a different waiter and then come back and hope they can up their class and consideration. I hate stereotypes but hey black people- stop. You're making the rest of us raised with actual manners bad. -- Tried them again. It wasn't busy when we got there. Wasn't busy when we left. Has a server named Jisiel or Jismiel - pretty woman with long hair. It stops there. She just was awful. Borderline inept at her job - for no real reason. I was actually appalled at the lack of service. The only thing "good" was the host - when she eventually greeted us. Who owns this place? I want to ask are you dumb? Your staff sucks - either put more people on or get people who actually have personality. It took forever to get everything. It took 10+ minutes to be greeted by a waitress who saw us, but didn't acknowledge us. If we didn't put in our drink orders we would have left. Checked on us once and disappeared for the rest of the night. She has no type of multi tasking ability - you have tables say next to each other for a reason - GO TO EACH TABLE. Took 15 minutes to get the check, but the fastest she ever moved was definitely picking the bill up. I honestly regret tipping her. The bill was 65.33, left 70 (I'm ashamed, but that's how bad it was. I hope she got the point) and told the hostess it's not because of anything else other than how atrocious service was. Haven't been here in 4 years and will never return after my last experience. Actually can't believe they're still open. After enjoying my meal, I think it was a barbecued salmon with rice and beans and plantains, felt something tickling my shoulder. Looked down and was horrified to see a giant cockroach on my shoulder. And if that wasn't horrifying enough, spotted another one if the same size, at least 3 inches long, scurrying across the banquet behind us. The most traumatizing restaurant experience of my life. A good place for west Indian food if you are looking for a upscale, clean place. The food was delicious but the service was terrible! I placed a reservation for my family (nine people)so when half of us got there, they wouldn't even seat us and they gave all the best seating to other people. So my father didn't care and took a seat at the booth. So then the rest of the party came and they put a square and a circle table together (poor design). The wait was so long; I swore they only had one person in the kitchen cooking for the whole place. We had to wait over 45 minutes for entrees and appetizers (aren't the appetizers suppose to come first?) And our waitress had a serious attitude like she was on her period. I think this place is better designed for a small group of four or less, not big parties. Its on the pricey side as well, so I won't frequent the place too much, only special occasions. read more

Finally got around to checking it out but was disappointed. Huge space looks good but makes it super noisy (function of all the people and loud music.) If you want a scene and good cocktails you should go. If you're fussier about food don't bother. Sushi rice is oddly cold and a lot of dishes use too much sauce or salt. read more

So, I decided to try Sugarcane bc I was tired of the over pricing at Negril, the attitudes at Footprints and lack of certain items at my local Jamaican spot. First thing is, yes this spot is small. You will be waiting to get seated, literally, right in front of the door so prepare yourself for that. The decor is nice, lighting is dim, they have a live band and the bar is small but still nice. I ordered their classic rum punch and my hunny ordered the hennessy sorrel, both drinks were flavorful but still strong. For dinner, I tried the creole shrimp with steamed vegetables and stew peas. The shrimp was OK, you can't really mess up steamed vegetables so yeah and the stew peas were a bit sweet to me (not what I'm used to, they had more of a sweet BBQ flavor) I didn't really enjoy them. Hunny ordered their chicken rasta pasta, which he said was good. Towards the end of our meal my love taps me to show me something hes pulled out of his mouth that looks like a hair. I take a good look at it and notice that it has sharp ends, kind of like wire and I am appalled! This sharp ass wire was in my husbands food! If he would have swallowed it, it would have caused internal damage wth?! We immediately stopped eating and hunny explained the situation to the waiter, he insisted on giving us a fresh plate of pasta to take home and apologized consistantly. We accepted but ended up throwing it out later. This is an unfortunate account because this is exactly why we are cutting down on the amount of food we eat out. Can't just trust anyone to prepare your food, you know?! I still wonder though, where the hell did that wire come from?! And why the hell was it in the food preparation area?! read more

After wanting to try this place for a while now and finally checking it out, I was highly disappointed. I'm a manager at another restaurant, and my biggest problem was management (go figure). Basically, some of our food was WAY to salty (calalloo soup and curry chicken roti), and after telling a handful of people, all of whom we thought were servers, we asked for the management cause it seemed like no one cared to do anything about the problem (didn't even simply apologize and said they will tell the chef). The manager happened to be the first person we complained to :/. I just wished that they cared to do SOMETHING about it to make our experience better. We would have def. ordered something else and paid for it if they took back what was bad and removed it from the bill. Good music, the wings were delicious that we had, and nothing beats a nice cold Carib. Oh yea and the "indian girls" that were complaining, Trinidadians. read more

The food is good. The attitude of the staff, along with their horrible service takes away from how good the food is. I've been there several times. My friend wanted to go recently for her birthday; as a Trinidadian, she was in the mood for Trinidadian food. Knowing how crowded they usually get, I called in advance to make a reservation. The person on the phone advised me that I didn't have to make one to just come in. We get there, it's crowded, and one part of our party is missing (there were three of us total). Unfortunately, they do not seat you until ALL of your party is there. Our party is finally here, no one says anything to us; we had to chase someone down to tell them we were ready. A group who came after us was about to be seated, and we were rudely told well, you didn't say anything so they get a table before you. Umm if you had acknowledged us after all of our party arrived, maybe you would have noticed! We weren't exactly sitting/standing there for 30 minutes to inhale the smell of the food for our health. Needless to say, instead of giving our business to a local eatery, we ended up going to Midtown to Asia de Cuba where we ALWAYS have GREAT service. Sugarcane missed out on $400. We won't go back nor will we recommend it to anyone else! read more

I have been to Sugarcane quite a few times before and had reasonable service. However last night around 6:30 I visited the restaurant and was greeted by an extremely rude hostess. My friend and I were deciding whether or not to have dinner and the hostess gave away our table right in the middle of our 10 second decision. She called us to the front of the restaurant to allow us to see a menu, instead of just being courteous and saying here are some sample options, etc. Then when we went to the front of the restaurant to see the menu she did some kind of off side unbelievable pass of the menu as if to say she really didn't care whether we stayed or left. Then we decided to sit at the bar, we asked the bartender if there were happy hour specials and she said, no just M-Thursday. Then she left. She was completely inattentive. I was completely shocked by the staff. My friend and I ended up going to the restaurant at the corner to have fabulous fresh food and drinks. I think this will be my last visit to Sugarcane. read more

The food was good. We sat outside (which I don't recommend because of the noise of the AC unit) after the John Legend concert. The place is not large and isn't great at handling large crowds but the food is worth it. The staff is friendly and accommodating. Went here on Saturday evening with my mom. It wasn't extremely packed at most people said it usually is. However, we went there at 7pm on Saturday, so maybe the party crowd hadn't arrived yet. I ordered the vegetarian plate, which consisted of a choice of any 3 sides. I got Callaloo soup, macaroni pie, and plantain. All were delicious!!!! No complaints about the callaloo, the macaroni was super delish, but was a biiiit salty. The plantains were good, and they serve a hefty amount of plantains. The food portions were a bit small, but I was completely full/satisfied once I finished everything. My mom ordered the shrimp with guava sauce and she said the sauce was really delicious, sweet and tangy. For drinks: I ordered Ginger Beer, and it was gooooood. My mom ordered the passion fruit colada and said it was good, but that the coconut flavor stood out more than the passion fruit flavor, but it was still good overall. read more

Every time I am in New York, I go to Sugarcane with my sister. I love the food, it is delicious. I ate both inside and outside before and the outside is quite pleasant during the summer. But as others said, the music is too loud for conversations... Keep it down, Sugarcane! :) read more

Went to try this spot for the first time. NEVER going back again! My friend and I walked in. There was a security guard and hostess in the front. There was a bit of a wait, but once we saw a table open, we asked the hostess if we could sit down. We were sitting there for a good 10 minutes. Nobody ever came to get our order. There was a waiter behind us. We are trying to get his attention, but he's too busy taking selfies with some women at the table behind us than to do his job. After about 20 minutes, we finally get his attention. He tells us that our table is a " bar table," so the bartender is supposed to take care of us. Not the workers. I don't understand how the hostess, seeing us go over there and sit down, didn't bothe to inform us. This waiter then tells us he's going to ask another person to take our order. Another 10 minutes pass and no one even bothered to check on us. Oh, and the waiter was still behind us at the other table taking selfies, all the while we are starving. He finally noticed us when we decided to leave the establishment. The hostess said nothing to us. This place is horrendous. read more

Nice sit down Caribbean spot. Gets VERY crowded, so I recommend reservations. Probably the best sit down caribbean restaurant...that doesn't mean it's the best caribbean food, but if you are looking for ambiance and don't want take out, it works...definitely better than Negril's in Manhattan by far. I have been dying to come to sugarcane for the longest especially since I live in the area. The place is small but everytime I pass by the crowd is out the door. Went on a Saturday night walked right in & it was so many people my friend & I bypassed the hostest who was chit chatting with a waiter. We were about to seat ourselves until a waiter let us know it was a reserved table so he sat us elsewhere. The hostest came with the menus & a different waiter came 15 min after to take our orders. They ran out of 1/2 the menu and it was only 9pm. I had their chicken grilled shrimp plantains sweet potato fries and everything was delicious. Their drinks were strong so well worth it. This place only gets 2 stars because the waiter was slooooowwww as hell. We waited almost 45 min for him to ask if we wanted more drinks then he forgot what we ordered. We asked for the check a bag and water before leaving he brought water then we told him we needed the bag and check again and had to wait another 45 min. I was so disappointed in this place. Next time I'll just sit by the bar. Also it's a loud place. Good tunes but too loud especially since u can't dance in there. read more

Rasta Pasta was really good. Great place. Small. Really packed at night. DJ @ night. The only think I didn't like NO PARKING. But that's not the restaurant fault. If you go on the weekend, just be prepared to park far away, and walk. read more

The drink I had is the only reason that its getting two stars. I went there with my boyfriend last Saturday & the place was packet out, which we knew it would be so we didn't mind when the hostess said that it was only a 30 min wait. We waited over an hour and a half to sit down and eat! It was ridiculous, every time we were about the leave the hostess would tell us how we were the next to be seated, but yet she still sat people that arrived after us before us. When we finally sat down I ordered a lycee martini (which was great, I 100% recommend it), and this Chinese tamarind shrimp dish with friend plantains & coconut rice. The shrimp was horrible, it was like they pre-cooked it and just mixed it in the sauce & although I asked for coconut rice they gave me rice & peas (which was dry btw!) and did i mention the plantains were wack also! My bf had oxtails which were good, we also had the bacchanal chicken as an appetizer which was really good. Overall, I don't think I will be going back, but you have to try everywhere at least one. Oh and there was only one waiter serving about 50 people,they had more bus-boys that waiters/waitresses smh! read more

I love the ambiance and the authentic caribbean cuisine which always is delightful to the taste buds. The cocktail drinks are exotic tasting. The hostess in the front has an attitude every time I visit. She never smiles and has a look on her face like she does not want to be there. Beside her sour mood the food is awesome,I had the salmon and my date had the oxtail which was really good as well. My favorite drink is the Sorrell margarita which is really on point. Well i finally decided to go to the great sugarcane everyone have talk about the place was pack, i arrive about 8:30 pm after multiple trips around the blocks to find a parking spot.We stood at the bar waiting on a table ,vibes was nice music to loud because of the sound system could be better so you don't have yell out your conversation to each other, well folks we did not get a seat till 11:30 pm yup waiter was nice he actually attack us while we were standing and took our appetizer and dinner order i was skeptical about that but roll with it.As we sit appetizer came out in 15mins which was fantastic soft tacos,jerk wings nice,now we were a party of four and its now mid-night here comes dinner main course only three dishes came out oh boy that was not good had to wait another 15mins for them to remedy the problem while everyone is eating.I would go back but i think i would get there before 7pm to be on the safe side. People who were seated early would not get up afer eating can blame them because the vibes is nice and the food is good. read more

What a horrible experience !! My daughter selected Sugarcane one of my favorite restaurants to my friends for a birthday celebration.. Reservations were made and we were seated promptly.and once our waiter came to the table he asked for our selection of beverage I stated a "Dark and Stormy please! To my surprise I was informed a west Indian restaurant did not have any dark rum ! REALLY ? I should've known from that point we should have left. We decided on a pitcher of rum punch, after a few minutes I watched your waitstaff walk past my table with our beverage to another table and I watched him return to our table and place the pitcher on the table guess what? We had to ask for glasses for the beverage. So we placed an order for appetizers everything seemed well ,however the waiter never came back to take our dinner order. I knew at this point it was going to be a crash and burn. Once we got the waiter's attention we placed our dinner order . At this point something told me to start the timer on my phone just to see how long the order would take. After 51 minutes I went to the waiter and showed him the time elapsed I explained it was unacceptable for our table to wait that long without any recognition from staff example " I apologize for the wait is there anything we can get you in the meantime all we received was nothing. At this point one of my guest spoke with the manager and he was aware of our wait time and stated he would see what the delay was. Finally after almost 1 hour we received our food mind you the request for takeout that was given after we receive our food was ready for me within 10 minutes. This was not my first time nor one of my guest first time at your restaurant we have enjoyed several good times in previous occasions however this experience ruined my birthday celebration . My boo and I went here for our weekly DateNight last Saturday and it was great! We arrived around midnight and it was packed! Nice crowd too. Everyone was swarming the bar so luckily we had no problem getting a table for two. We started with 2 dirty vodka martinis (i dont do the fruity martinis, give it to me straight), and they were actually good. You would be surprised at how few bartenders know how to make a simple martini without the frill. My man had the jerk chickn (portions were huge) and I had a special, which was wings of some sort and they were good! Both of our chicken had that char burntness that can only come from a grill and fire, so yummy. The waitress was nice and the price wasnt bad. I think our entire tab was about 55.00. The best part is that we felt like we really went somewhere even though we only had to take the train from Kingston to Bergen. Its a nice neighborhood hood juke joint :-) read more

My friend found plastic in her food told the waiter Marlon and he said it's onion , fresh purple onions are not clear and don't pop they crack ! He took the plastic off her knife with his bare hands and gave her back the same knife to use !! I work at a restaurant so I know this is not how to do things!
