I just recently moved back to the neighborhood, and my taste buds have been scanning for delicious food options. There aren't many here; in fact, there are very few great options alongside fast food staples. When I was a kid, my family rarely ate out. I assume it's a Caribbean-cultural thing since we have many fine home cooks and chefs in our midst.
I also assume one of those fine local home chefs decided to open up the family business known as Ghetto Shack. They're on Uber Eats, and after reading lovely reviews of their food on Google, I decided to take my chances and order some breakfast.
It was hard to choose between the liver and ackee and saltfish breakfast options, but because I've only had liver at buffet places and didn't want a large portion, I decided on the latter. My family's from Guyana, so I didn't grow up eating ackee and saltfish. Actually, I had it for the first time a few years ago, so I don't have the best frame of reference. Yet going with my taste buds here: it was quite delicious. Nice big pieces of ackee and fish with a beautiful onions-peppers-tomato base. I got giddy opening up the delivery order to find fresh, hot fried dumplings (fried food always taste best straight from the fryer to mouth, with time to cool of course) and an oily paper bag that housed the saltfish stew. Somehow I knew the oily paper bag was going to amount to good things. Delivery was super prompt. I placed my order on the UberEats app at 9:30a, and was eating and watching Sherlock on Netflix by 9:50.
I wish I could give this place 5 stars but I know folks will not like the portion size compared to price. They filled about 70% of a medium-sized styrofoam container. It came with six fried dumplings, which kind of makes up for it, but I have a feeling I'll have leftover dumplings after I polish off the stew. For $12 (not including tax and delivery fees), the portion size is small. Yet I also hear they make their food to order. So IDK, everyone. It's tasty as hell; just be prepared for the low portion size.
Also kudos to the person who answered the phone and allowed me to change my side option. He told me he was going to fry the dumplings now, and I believe him because they came super hot. Looking forward to trying their lunch and dinner entrees. Hope this business maintains their high food quality and continue to flourish! read more
