Absolutely unacceptable TERRIBLE experience. And this was not my first time at this establishment. We came in as a party to celebrate a birthday expecting good food and decent service, but instead waited OVER TWO HOURS just to get our meals. No communication, no apologies, no updates -- just ignored while staff acted like nothing was wrong. By the time the food finally arrived, the table was frustrated. Then came the bill, and somehow it was even worse. We were overcharged, hit with taxes that didn't seem right, AND they added a "voluntary $50 gratuity" automatically . If it's automatically added, it's not voluntary. Charging customers extra after making them wait two hours is insulting!!!!!!!!! The service was nowhere near good enough to justify the chaos, terrible management, and shady billing practices. This place seriously needs to learn how to manage customers and be transparent with charges. I definitely wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone unless you enjoy wasting your time and money. I had high hopes for this restaurant, but unfortunately, I left wanting more. Maybe because I'm African, I felt the food lacked the love and depth of flavor I was expecting. My cousins and I decided to make a night of it and ordered a variety of menu items along with drinks. The drinks were on the pricey side and, in my opinion, not worth the cost. The appetizers were actually very good, but the disappointment started once the entrees arrived. The jollof tasted more like underwhelming Spanish rice, the oxtail was just okay, and the lamb chops were overcooked. Service was also inconsistent. Our food came out at different times--some of us were nearly finished eating by the time the rest of the entrees arrived, which took away from the experience. I celebrated my birthday with dinner at Eko and let me tell you - it did not disappoint! Everything was amazing. Located in Carnesie, Brooklyn you'll find the Afro-Caribbbean restaurant and lounge bringing you good drinks, delicious food and all the vibes. I had reservations for 7pm and arrived a bit early but the place was pretty empty except for a few people at the bar. So needless to say we were seated immediately. Our waiter Tammy greeted us and provided menus. We ordered drinks - I highly recommend the coconut rum punch and some apps for the table - Jerk Spring Rolls, Oxtail Dumplings, and Wings. All very good and made to perfection. Shortly after, our entrees were served - a few dishes we ordered were Jollof Rice with Jerk Chicken and Oxtail, which came with sautéed spinach, Jerk Salmon with garlic mashed potatoes, Eko Pasta (rasta pasta) with Oxtail, and plantains. The food was so good we asked the waiter if the chef can come out so we can pay our compliments and put a face to the food. Chef Pamela did her thing! The food was packed with bold flavors and spice with the perfect amount of heat. To top it off they sang Happy Birthday with a personalized sign and carrot cake (my choice). The restaurant is beautifully decorated and the staff were friendly but very ill prepared. Waited 45 minutes for water after asking twice. They did not have half of the appetizers and also had no goat, so we settled on the codfish fritters which were very oily. I gave an extra star because I had the jerk salmon with jollof rice which was delicious! However my husband did not enjoy the oxtail and my father did not enjoy the brown stew snapper. As it was Mother's Day, and right at the start of dinner time (5:30-6pm) I'm unsure how they sold out of half the menu so early. We also witnessed a mother and her daughter who waited by the entrance to be seated for about 20 minutes. The host apologized and said she thought she had already seated them. This is a hip establishment. The music is hip and the ambience is chic and contemporary. Many of the patrons were dressed up celebrating birthday parties and other festivities. This food is African with a Caribbean twist. I recommend the oxtail dumplings. Can't go wrong with this choice. Another must try is the Salmon sliders. The service can be improved. This was not the experience I had hoped for. It was my sister in law's birthday party. The reservation had been placed a month in advance and there was no reservation to be found when we got there. We requested the lounge and we were told it was being used as an office. The manager cleared it out and we sat in the back. The lounge was cold and not well kept. The drinks came out 45 minutes after we ordered the drink, when I went to the bar, a young lady was complaining about her foot and how she didn't want to be here because her foot hurt. The drinks came out and we ordered appetizer. The appetizers were very underwhelming. We received only 3 saltfish fritters for 15 dollars, a joke, the fritters had no taste. When the main course came out, my husband ordered goat and there were four pieces of goat in the bowl, with hardly any meat on the bones. Everybody's else food was pretty unpleasant as well, there was no salt on the food and menu items that were listed were sold out. I spoke to the manager and asked if there was some way that he can make this experience better, he said, the only thing he could do was a champagne toast. We recently dined at Eko and the food did not disappoint! We had the Suya wings, the Eko pasta with oxtails, and the jerk lamb chops--all flavorful, well-seasoned, and cooked beautifully. My boyfriend had the Kingston cocktail and really enjoyed it--strong and smooth with a nice kick. That said, the service left a lot to be desired. While our server was kind, knowledgeable about the menu, and gave great recommendations, the follow-through just wasn't there. No one checked on us during the meal, and it took about 20 minutes just to get the check picked up. The restaurant wasn't packed either--just a few small groups--so the delay didn't really make sense. Overall, the food is worth coming for, but I hope they step up the service to match the quality of the kitchen. read more

When we asked how many oxtail empanadas came in an order she said "huh, we have that" Oh brother... then we ordered our drinks and honestly, for a new establishment, the cheap alcohol was already a red flag . The majority of their cocktail lists were bottom barrel mixes (they even have a drink with henny and hypnotiq smh) To the food, we decided against the oxtail empanadas because if the waitress didn't even know it was on the menu , that means noone orders it , I'm good . The food was ok was TINY ! He ordered oxtails and jollof rice - loved it but finished it in less than 10 bites- I had the okra with shrimp & fufu , I asked for spicy, it came out bland and no pepper at all .... The ambiance was nice. Great DJ. The customer service was the bare minimum there are about three waitresses and two of them does not come off as friendly, more like miserable. The service is EXTREMELY slow. There was a dirty table next to my BFF and I since we sat down and we've been waiting now more than a 45 min for our salmon... Dinks are great though. Here now a hour and a half, just had to ask can the table next to us be cleaned so the fly can go away... We Won't be back the food was not worth the wait! read more

It was November and I think they're a fairly new restaurant and getting buzz on the interwebs so we decided to surprise her. I had the grits with salmon. So initially when the grits came out I was a lil skeptical. Cause it wasn't the usual runnish, smooth consistency. It was pretty think but...I really enjoyed it. It was on the sweeter side but also complimented the salmons savory sauce. It's hard to describe and I thought I was going to dislike it but I really enjoyed it! We got mimosas and they were good, basic flavors. I do think their staff needed to be a bit more attentive in terms of cleaning up plates and things from the tables. And as much staff as they had it felt like I had to raise my hand for someone to come to our table so they lacked a bit but with some additional experience and refinement they'll be good! They did ask my friend multiple times if she was ok. The food was simply subpar. The EKO pasta was not good, I had to season with black pepper and salt as I was eating it. The Jollof rice was not as spicy or authentic as I expected and hoped. The ambiance was nice. They are definitely trying to achieve an aesthetic and I think they did a good job. Appetizers were delicious and also the entrées were yummy as well! We came here to celebrate my cousin's 50th birthday. No one in the party had ever tried African cuisine but it was delicious. Not only was the food delicious but the customer service was amazing! We had an opportunity to meet the owners as well who accommodated us in our group of eight with the private room last minute and even surprised us with home made drinks! I also must say the DJ / music was on point and definitely a vibe! We were literally dancing out the restaurant when we left! Party of 3 on a Wednesday night. I literally rsvp on site on my way to the restaurant. Although our party was initially short one person we were greeted and seated immediately. Few moments later while enjoying the aesthetics our friendly , vibrant and welcoming server Zymone arrives. She introduces her self and ask abt our missing third party and offers to hold off on certain orders in order to give our late friend time to arrive. The food, the music, the staff were all great. But the prize/highlight of the night was Zymone. She is a wonderful asset to this establishment. It was my first time going to Eko and was hesitant based on reviews.
