I love breakfast food, but I'm so busy I don't remember the last time I actually went out for breakfast. My mornings are countdowns of just getting through breakfast to get to the litany of things I have on my schedule for the day. Even though I love cold cereal and fruit, I dream of sitting down to biscuits and gravy, a delicious omelet, something like that. So then thank GOD for Memorial Day! A day off to take a slight bit of rest, wake up late, and get some breakfast food. Only problem is, where do I get it on a holiday? Sugar n Spice came through for us! We arrived with a less than packed room, seats available at the counter and a slight wait for a booth. The hostess offered us coffee if we wanted to wait (which we took graciously and took a look over the menu). After a brief wait we got seated, and placed our orders. I had the Veggie Omelet and English Muffin, my girlfriend the "Slaughterhouse Five" ("THere's no way you can eat all that" said the waitress, "I'll help" said my stomach), and we had the daily special of Peach french toast to split. The food came out quickly and hot, and huge. Our french toast had a small amount of powdered sugar over it and the waitress decided it needed more, we declined, unfortunately it also had a few smatterings of canned peach over top, undrained from the syrup it was canned in. The toast was fine, but I was disappointed, because for some reason I expected it to have been incorporated from the top, not just a bit of peach thrown over top as an afterthought. The Slaughterhouse Five is definitely a large plate of food, but it's also totally doable if you're hungry enough. The two of us managed to take it down pretty substantially, and the variety was welcome (I like goetta and she doesn't, she eats ham and I don't, it was a good split!). She loved the home fries, but they were salty enough at the start. Now about my omelette. There were some definite positives - it had a TON of large veggies in there, which is really exactly what i was looking for when I ordered it. But, there was even more butter in there than I could have ever expected. I literally was able to drain off enough to soak through two napkins, and it was still too buttery - there was a sheen on my plate and a pool in the bottom that I tried to fight around at every opportunity. Similarly, the toast and English muffins had enough butter on them to have cooked another meal itself, but they still offered us additional in packages on the table. Completely unnecessary, and overwhelming from what could have been a delicious and (semi) balanced meal to start the day. The omelette didn't have much flavor, but when I threw some pepper and hot sauce on top it was magic. The butter was too much, but man there was a LOT of food. Fortunately, that was my only complaint, as everything else here was incredible. THe staff were friendly, the food was damn tasty (once I got rid of a gallon of butter), and the coffee was barely tolerable but always hot and refilled. We got a very good meal, on a holiday, and a great price. I doubt they'll be open on Independence Day, so I guess I'll be back in around Labor Day... read more

Terrible service. They don't take your name when you are waiting they just "remember" who was next in line. Well two couples got seated in front of us, we finally said something and she said we have a seat for you guys, but then the people didn't like their seat so they switched into a booth. Well when we got to our seat we realized why.. it was the "honey moon seat" so we were at this small table crammed on one side. The waitress said she would be right with us but 10 mins went by and she took the order of the table next to us. We thought after she took their order she would take ours, but no without saying a thing she just walked past our tiny crammed "table" at this point we just got up and left. We will never be coming back & will be advising our friends to do the same. read more

Wow!! My husband and I decided to stop for brunch on our way to the Cincinnati Zoo. I have driven passed this place plenty of times but thin pancakes sounded gross to me. I WAS 100% WRONG! Everything we had was amazing. The pancakes had crispy edges and melted in your mouth! Sooo good. I don't even want to go back to regular pancakes. My table got a few items to try which included the salmon patties(moist and flavorful), grits, eggs, turkey sausage, prime rib, home fries, blueberry AND chocolate chip pancakes! Nothing disappointed. As amazing as the food was- the SERVICE was the highlight of our trip. Every single person working in the restaurant was amazing! They all complimented and played with our newborn baby, gave us a cute ducky and handled us with complete care. I felt like they were family!! This is the type of place that I've been looking for. Sugar n' Spice is so beloved in Cincinnati for multiple reasons. There's 75 years of rich history, the service makes you feel at home, and they offer a long list of breakfast & lunch options. It's a bit out of the way for me, but I have made the trip a few times now. The decor of Sugar n' Spice is what truly makes it. There are different seating options, ranging from stools around the bar to the awkward half booth. If the half booth is given as an option, I would highly recommend steering away from it unless you're dining alone - but in which case you'd probably just take a seat at the bar. The appeal for most first-time diners is the colorful walls adorned with their signature rubber ducks. They allow you to choose a take-home duck on your first visit. S&S (as I now will refer to it thanks to Kay B.) has a variety of menu options to please all palettes. Make no mistake: this is diner food. Do not expect to come here and order gourmet pancakes and hot chocolate like you're living the high life at Serendipity 3. The classic breakfast food listed on the menu is mostly executed well. I've sampled quite a bit on their menu. I always steer toward goetta and their perfectly cooked eggs. I'm not a big fan of their grits (boxed variety) or their home fries (needs seasoning). I also thought their biscuits and gravy was odd because it had sausage in between. It sounded cool, but the execution was poor. The gravy had no flavor and the biscuit was tough. I wouldn't say I'm a picky biscuits and gravy eater, but I've had better in many other places. I've sampled the French toast & pancakes, both of which I was pleasantly surprised by. They had the perfect amount of sweetness - a small dose of maple syrup to complement them will suffice. I'm not even a fan of either item but I definitely snuck in a few more bites than my friends originally allotted. S&S certainly brings the sugar, but the spice is hit or mess. (I mean, they have a lot of hot sauce options if you literally want spice though if you want it. #cholulaforlife). I'm a savory breakfast eater, thus my 3 stars. However, the staff is personable and friendly, and if my friends ask to come here, I'm not going to say no. read more

I love this place so much. It's a staple in the community. Their food is always delicious and the staff is super nice. I usually come to this place a couple times a year and it never disappoints. I got the Philly steak omelette. It's 5 eggs, peppers, onions, mushrooms and steak. The omelette ends up being as big as my face. It's very hard to eat it all but I gave it my best effort. If you want really good home cooled food come here. Pretty much anything that you order will be good. But You have to try their pancakes. They are great, the bacon is crispy, and the coffee is fresh. You should definitely get here early on weekends if you dont feel like waiting though. read more

Went there this morning for breakfast sandwiches, it was busy but both sandwiches came out after 30 minutes and wrong. They did not have eggs on them, we both ordered cheddar cheese mine was shredded hers was a slice, she ordered goetta I ordered pork sausage, we both got goetta and mine was burnt and about 1/4 the size of hers. We paid and took the orders to go because we had to run and didn't have time to complain or get the order fixed. Overall unimpressed, server was great she did her best and the 1 goetta sandwich that was not Burt was pretty good if it had eggs on it would have been great. read more

One of my favorite breakfast joints in town. Although I love Waffle House, this place is a local gem. My wife and I used to eat inside on occasion, but it's pretty small on the inside and could be tough to find a seat. We started doing takeout and the food was just as good. The thin pancakes were a little strange at first but they hold lots of syrup and are still good. I also love the quesadilla which is very filling. Will be back for sure. read more

This is one of my favorite classic breakfast spots. This is a classic diner feel with very friendly staff. The restaurant has so much history and has been around forever. It is very colorful and you will see their iconic ducks around. Ask to take one with you! I usually get the breakfast combo of eggs, sausage (they have varieties, links, patties etc) and pancakes, which are AMAZING! I will say you must go early and go with a small party. Sugar n' Spice is clearly a local favorite, and I'm excited to be in on it! The food quality, I would give 3 stars - pretty standard and little pricier than I may have expected. I ordered the gyro omelette and it really didn't have that much meat in it, but that may be a one-off kind of thing. I loved that you could order tzatziki sauce with it. Service was really friendly and fast. The 4th star is for the service, as the owner was walking around with fresh brownies and cookies to share out. The star is shared by the fact that everyone who comes gets a cute little rubber ducky to bring home with them. This accounts for the extra dollar or two per item on the menu, I suspect. The space is rather small but feels cozy. We had about a 30 minute wait, but at 10 am on a Sunday, that really isn't bad at all. I'll go back I'm sure. read more

This place was highly recommended as a stop on our Cincy pancake tour! We arrived early and expected to wait for a table but it wasn't too long. We loved the vibe and they even sang happy birthday to a guest. Once we were seated, our server took our order quickly but unfortunately there was a back up in the kitchen and took almost 40 minutes for our food to arrive and then something was missing. Our server quickly corrected the issue and took care of that part of the bill. Overall this place is definitely worth a stop and I'm glad we tried it!! read more
