The custom cakes here look amazing! I stopped by the store to see if we could taste the cake before committing to it. I learned the wedding cake flavors aren't the same flavors they have at the store in cake and cupcake form. Luckily when speaking with the young man, he said "we do have wedding cake kits right now". We happily purchased one right away, but wondered how fresh they could be if they had it on demand. Yup, most of the cakes were super dry and hard. The chocolate cakes also didn't have that deep chocolate flavor. Admittedly, we do not like buttercream and wedding cakes usually are limited to that as well as fondant. Every option here is buttercream based so we weren't huge fans, but leaned toward more the tropical flavors: mango, passionfruit, lemon. The mocha, hazelnut and caramel were pretty tasty too. I really didn't want to write this review, however when you pay $70 for a cake ordered a week in advance and not only get this as the final product but have the owner lie and gaslight you instead of simply owning up to a mistake, you lose a long time customer. Look at the picture. The dome of the cake was never leveled and no attempt made to level the layers with custard so I'm paying for a cake that I could've made with premade cake mix and 5% custard? We called in and the worker confirmed there are supposed to be two layers of custard in the Burnt Almond and advised me to email the owner so they could make it right. Look at the next photo. How do you as an owner - instead of simply admitting this was a rushed, dry, and unleveled cake - tell me in one message that the recipe changed because other customers had been complaining about too much custard but that you would be returning back to the original recipe? What am I, 5 years old? Just own up and say someone messed up and you'll keep the quality of your products up - but I guess that's hard to do when you ignore your long timecustomers and already got $70 for a cake that's 95% bread. I've been coming here for years, and the burnt almond cake has always been one of my favorites. Unfortunately, my most recent purchase was disappointing. It is embarrassing to tell all your guests this is the best burnt almond cake in the Bay Area and it didn't live up to it when serving the cake. The biggest difference were the amount of custard and the top layer (upside down dome??!!) seem to be just thrown together, as evident in photo. Compared to the cakes I've purchased in the past, there was barely any custard filling this time, making the cake much drier and less enjoyable. One of the things that made this cake so special was the perfect balance between the light sponge, toasted almonds, and generous custard filling. With the prices of the cakes continuing to increase, I also expect the quality and consistency to remain the same. It's disappointing to pay more but receive a product that doesn't meet the standard I've come to expect. Came here to see how their Burnt Almond Cake compares to Peter's Bakery! This place has tons of other delicious pastries and cakes to choose from. The space feels super cozy and service was friendly. They even mentioned their Burnt Almond Cake has always been their bestseller. First bite tasted heavenly. This had more stronger almond and Italian rum flavor and I was pleasantly surprised by the sugared almond slivers coating. The custard was absolutely generous, creamy, and divine. I'd say Peter's Bakery is more traditional, but more fluffier while Sugar Butter Flour has a more modern twist and is slightly sweeter. Their version definitely has more custard, which I personally enjoy... but this may be too sweet for the older Asian parents family. My husband and I stopped by around 7pm on a Friday for a few cakes to try as we're looking for wedding cakes. We got the hazelnut napoleon and raspberry cheesecake and these were unfortunately quite dry and hard. We were hoping it was a fluke because we had gone late at night. Order two custom cakes for a work event. The cakes tasted great but the service was terrible. These were ordered for a company event. They were delivered over an hour late. When I called they kept saying he was 'on his way'. When it got close to my meeting time, I called and they said they couldn't contact the driver and the manager I was working with had left. When the driver did show he said he got lost. How does one get lost when every cell phone has GPS? Found out later they were late the previous year as well. We will no longer be using them. We have been coming here for about 13 years for all our special occasion desserts. We stopped by yesterday for some little cakes and treats for my birthday. All their cakes are displayed in pastry cases and they have some custom cake replicas on the wall. They offer a variety of cakes that are already made or you can make a custom order. The owner is very sweet and helpful. Our favorites here, that I picked out, are the opera cake, the princess cake, hazelnut nut chocolate cake and burnt almond cake. They are all so good. After posting my original review, I received this private message from customer service representative Matt C., reproduced verbatim, including typos: "Hi I see you review for Sugar Butter Flour contained lies. I hope you feel bad for lying." That was the entire message. No apology. No attempt to understand my concerns. No explanation of what was supposedly false. Just an accusation that I was lying, followed by "I hope you feel bad for lying." I asked him to identify which specific statement he believed was false, which ended up being ignored. If the business genuinely disputed my account, this was the obvious opportunity to explain why. Instead, they chose to escalate the situation and attack me personally, rather than address any of the concerns in my review. (My original review is as follows, below. This update describes how the business chose to respond to criticism of that service) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Original Review I will not be patronizing a business that lies to its customers and then refuses to apologize when called out. A few weeks ago, I called about their specialty Dream Cake and asked three questions: 1. Could they make it less sweet? Answer: No, because the cakes are made in batches. It wouldn't be possible to alter the recipe for just one cake. When I picked up the cake, I asked whether they had another one available and was told this was the only cake they had made. I pointed out that they told me this cake was supposedly made in batches. They then backed down and said that it actually was possible to alter the sweetness of this cake, and that it wasn't actually batch-made. Completely different answer from before + no apology whatsoever. No offer to remake it. I ended up paying over $50 for a 6" cake that was far too sweet for my family's tastes. 2. Could I buy slices instead of a whole cake? Answer: No, with no explanations besides "we just don't sell slices of this cake." So I literally had to purchase an entire cake. 3. Could I, a paying customer, use the restroom? Answer: No. I had driven about an hour from Gilroy and ended up using the neighboring Safeway's restroom instead. There was also a separate incident where I called and was put on hold for six minutes. When I hung up and called back, the same cashier simply said, "Oh, were you the person who called a few minutes back?" and asked me what I wanted. No acknowledgment or apology. TBH, this incident is minor in isolation. Taken together with all the incidents, they demonstrate a complete and utter lack of basic customer service and respect. And the cake itself? Way too sweet, and not what I was told to expect. I was told it was made entirely with whipped cream; in reality, the middle layer was a very sweet custard layer. The strawberries were fresh and I like the custard. The outside of it has bars of white chocolate which was good but too sweet for me. I also tried a mini version of their cheesecake and famous burnt almond cake. My boyfriend liked the cheesecake but I liked the almond cake more. The almond cake was also too sweet for me so I couldn't eat it all in one sitting.
