Is Izumi matcha worth the hype? I have been to Izumi matcha over ten times at this point and remember first trying it in their original location in the silver creek area of San Jose before the matcha boom. Prior this place was unique and delicious, and really hit a spot. I believe that now with the various matcha spots around, it may not have as much as of unique selling point. Their tornado matcha is good and sweet, and is a great dessert however in my personal opinion, their traditional drinks are not standouts. Last week I went with a friend and ordered a matcha oat latte with a double shot, and while I tasted the matcha, it was grainy and didn't really have any depth. I wouldn't say I would avoid going here, for a matcha option and to get caffeinated for the day. It is still an option but I feel like it wouldn't be fair to say it's worth driving over 30+ minutes here. As a note too, this location can get extremely busy in terms of parking! The plaza is popping with heavy hitters. Service was fine as they do the self service kiosk with pick up being less than 5 minutes (no big lines), and the store itself is small with no seating outside but plenty of plaza seating outside. read more

I love love love matcha so much, so much so we get it imported from Japan, it's been amazing. I have always matcha before it got mainstream and popular. I was happy to find this location opened up and my husband has gotten it to go for me on a few occasions and I absolutely love their matcha swirl, the cream and matcha ratio is great and it's sweet, so do occasional indulgence it's good, but it's not horribly sweet. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon and it was busy, but the line wasn't too long and it went by quick. Lucky us! Cute decor too, especially with all the matcha bowls in display. I ordered the Strawberry Yuzu Matcha Tea which contains a layer of strawberry puree, a layer of Japanese yuzu citrus, and an award winning Marukyu Koyamaen matcha. My friend and I both got our treats minutes after we ordered. There is no indoor seating but there are plenty of benches outdoors. The interior is minimally decorated, and I noticed a wall full of gorgeous, handmade pottery. The treats here were so tasty! My friend tried a Classic Honey Matcha Latte, which she stated had a deep matcha flavor. I tried the matcha and black sesame soft serve. I'm not even a huge black sesame fan, but this black sesame flavor was addicting. It was nutty, creamy, and probably the best black sesame taste I've ever had. It wasn't a really strong black sesame flavor (which might be why I liked it so much). The subtlety in flavor helped with the richness of the soft serve. The matcha soft serve was equally delicious, a vivid green color. After a short 10 minute line i have decided to just go with a matcha with cold foam on top. The matcha was really good and earthy and isn't bitter or like have an after taste. I did take a sip of the Honey Hōjicha Latte with Oat milk, which I will be saving for tomorrow, and it's also very tasty. I taste the roasted tea especially on the aftertaste. Everything tastes very premium and high quality, so it does not disappoint! I definitely will be back to try their ice cream. Ambiance, it's very spacious. That said, while it was good, I wouldn't say it particularly stands out compared to other matcha locations. I also ordered the Lychee Matcha Tea with regular sugar (which they recommended) and less ice. I usually enjoy lychee quite a bit, but the combination with matcha tasted a bit strange to me. I didn't end up liking it very much, though I think that's more of a personal preference than an issue with the drink itself. Overall the place is clean and service is quick. The only bottleneck seems to be ordering since they only have one kiosk. Adding a second kiosk would probably help during busier times. The line gets so long that they have a designated continued line outside that always has people in it. Unfortunately, someone decided to cut in front of the 5 people waiting in the outside line and just walk himself directly inside. It must be pretty common. The line moves very slowly, but the drinks were ready pretty quickly (like a couple minutes) after we ordered. I got the Okinawa Hojicha and paid an extra 95 cents for oat milk. I got it less sweet (which has a big NOT RECOMMENDED next to it). I liked it! It was the perfect sweetness for me.
