This is a fascinating restaurant with a limited but thoughtful menu. First, our server, Nicole, was remarkable. From offering food suggestions and when we wanted coffee, which they didn't have, for electrical reasons, she went to a coffee shop for us! They are focused on the customer experience. They had morels which were simply cooked and delicious, so much we ordered another. The oysters were equally delicious. The entrees are limited but outstanding. I had the scallops which were perfectly cooked. The halibut, gnocchi with spare ribs, and Cazuela(seafood stew) were fantastic. Excellent in every way. The ambiance is spacious, cool and relaxing. Great for couples looking for a nice evening out to dine.... Or for groups looking to celebrate. The service is genuine, friendly and engaging. David took great care of us explaining various dishes to us, and answering all our questions. The food was sublime. We weren't super hungry so we only ordered a Mixed Green Salad with King Salmon and the empanadas for our mains. The empanadas are legit! Everything is made in house.... The pocket is made from masa that is ground fresh at a nearby mill. The filling was savory... A bit of cheese and lots of yummy mushrooms...and then drizzled with a romesco sauce. The salad had lots of crisp fresh greens, radishes sliced super thin, cucumber slices, apple slices and goat cheese. The king salmon was prepared perfectly.... moist, meaty and flaked off the skin. All of this was lightly dressed with a slightly sweet vinaigrette that I could have drank by the glass if they let me. We finished our dinner with sorbet and ice cream. We dined with here two weeks ago, and I can't stop thinking about the sweet chili lime prawns and the arugula burrata salad with an egg wash. I already love arugula, but the egg wash gave it a nice texture and made it easy to eat. As for the mains, my husband had the pork and I had the scallops. I think the scallops were cooked perfectly, my only gripe was it came with crispy polenta, that I felt could have used more flavoring. as they were rather bland compared to our starters. The decor is very simple and stark. My one other gripe was the chairs. I have a lot of cushion in the tushin, and my buns were aching after sitting in those chairs for a couple of hours. Perhaps, a simple fix would be to add some colorful cushions to add some pop to black and white decor. We did end on a very high note with a delicious lemon chiffon cake with a lemon/lime curd. One of the top 10 meals I've ever had and service was a team effort and spectacular! We had the ribbon carrots with whipped ricotta and prawns with lemon grass and honey chili as starters, and the scallops with crispy polenta, local mushrooms,basil/oregano foam; and Gnocchi with braised short rib, porcini, preserved heirloom tomatoes, and pecorino for the main course. Lovely restaurant perfect for an intimate date night or dinner with friends. Acoustics are good for having a conversation with your table. Service is impeccable. Food was fantastic. Our table all loved the Burrata and tomatoes. Cocktails were also well crafted. My only complaint was for being located at the gateway to the Willamette Valley wine country, there weren't many options for wine by the glass. As soon as I saw bone marrow on the menu, I was in! It's also rare that my bottle of wine costs about as much as my meal haha. We had a delicious red blend and the marrow and prawns to start. The marrow was garlicky and awesome. The prawns were good but the sauce was the star. We got the duck, gnocchi, and scallops. While the duck didn't have a crispy skin it was delicious. The peas and greenery in the gnocchi were so refreshing and tasty! I'm not sure my gf let me try her scallop, now that I think about it... boo! I know we got dessert, but I'm at a loss what it was... cheesecake maybe? It was good. My only slightly negative mention is that they had no coffee. I guess their machine was broken? The seafood smelled very fishy. It was the tiniest portions I've ever been served. Three fifty cent piece size scallops, with a total of maybe a teaspoon of quinoa. Undercooked. My cousin and husband and cousins wife were treated to maybe 1&1/2 oz halibut. For $32 and $33 dollars a plate, it will never be recommended! To bad. Atmosphere was pleasant. read more

I'm told the previous iteration of this restaurant was underwhelming, but it's under new ownership and a recent visit was excellent. Solid wine list, good seasonal menu, and very good service. House-made burrata was quite good although there was a bit less Prosciutto than I might have hoped. My seafood & chorizo stew was very good and my dining companions were exceedingly happy with their main courses. Overall, a great dining experience and I understand they're now on their Spring menu which I'm sure is also excellent. Definitely a good dining choice when you're in Newberg. read more

My wife and I had an amazing meal at subterra. We ordered oysters on the half shell and the empanadas as starters and as soon as we tasted them we knew we were in for a great meal. I had the duck with lobster mushrooms and port and Cherry cream sauce and my wife had halibut with clams local mushrooms and sea beans. Both dishes were unbelievable as was the service. I'm a tad claustrophobic and wasn't too keen on the idea of dining "underground" even though it was a wine cellar. We've been to Subterra twice now so apparently my fear has vanished. The wine cellar vibe really is unique. I love the painted mural on the back wall of the Tuscan (Italy) countryside. The wait staff is excellent, although our second time wasn't as good as the first, the food both visits was phenomenal. I have had "A Really Good Turkey Sandwich" ($13): smoked turkey on house-baked sourdough with cranberry mustard, dill Havarti, avocado, greens, and tomato. I've also had the Cuban Pork ($13): roasted Cuban pork, Black Forest ham, Swiss cheese, pickle & mustard sauce, served warm on grilled Ciabatta. Of the two sandwiches, the Cuban pork was the most memorable. My husband has had the Chicken Confit both times we've been for lunch ($14): tender cured slow cooked chicken leg on creamy polenta with braised greens & bacon. He has never been a fan of chicken legs but Subterra's confit has made him a convert. Being located in the heart of Oregon's amazing Willamette Valley wine country, you cannot go wrong with anything on the extensive wine list. A plus is that Subterra is not only a wine cellar restaurant but they are also a wine merchant. You can purchase unopened bottles of their wines at reduced prices to take home. Reservations are recommended for dinner but we've had no problem for lunch on a weekday. A nicer than most restaurant but not formal. We will be going back. read more

Easily the highlight of my Newberg work trips, Subterra offers some of the best food and wine in town. Not the cheapest place in The Berg, but a great place for a date, group gathering, or just to grab some great, fresh food and Oregon wine. The long and short of it: 1. Wine. You're in Oregon wine country after all. So start, compliment or finish your meal with a bottle of Oregon wine (or all 3, I don't judge). Subterra has a great list to choose from, both local and not. They list pairings for each dish, but don't be afraid to ask your server for recommendations. I would (and have) come back here just for a glass of wine even if I had already eaten. 2. 1/2 Price Wine Night. Tuesday. Go on Tuesday. Is it Tuesday? If yes.... then go. Bottles are half priced and lets be honest.... you're getting that bottle of wine you've been eying. 3. Food. The wine might be the champion of Subterra for me, but the food is nothing to forget about. Each entree comes with fresh bread, a choice of soup (black bean or their rotating offering) and a salad. Can't say I've had a bad course here but the scallops and black bean soup really stood out. I look forward to sampling the rest of the menu in the future. 4. Service. I've been consistently wow'd by the service here. Every server we've had has been upbeat, helpful and just kinda fun to talk to. It really adds a touch to an already great experience and it doesn't go unnoticed. 5. Atmosphere. Underground and upscale homey, Subterra has a perfect intimate date atmosphere. The acoustics lead to it being a tad bit loud, but not nearly so much that it's hard to hold a conversation. 6. Price. Subterra will run you a pretty penny at around $30 an entree before wine, but it makes for a nice date spot and is well worth the price in my opinion. Stop being so cheap and live a little. Newberg is growing on my a bit, and Subterra is a big part of that. The price of the menu is more or less the only thing preventing me from coming here daily, but not enough for me to not make it a once per week affair. Positives 1st: Service was great and ambiance nice and upscale. Drinks were creative and tasty. Cons: Food a hit and miss. Salad and Rock Fish dish were great. New York Steak a big miss. Not cooked to medium so reheated very rare to medium which took about 10 mins while my wife's dish got cold. Steak was still very bad lacked any taste except for the herb butter covering the bland steak. Shouldn't be on the menu if they can't cook correctly and has zero taste. Or try to use what and pepper or get a better quality piece of beef. Waitress should have noticed only a few bites eaten but didn't ask or care. If you go there, order something else and you should be very happy. read more

I feel bad writing a negative review because we should have been more vocal while dining. We came for our wedding weekend dinner and honestly it was very disappointing. First off, everything took FOREVER. From being greeted, to every course, it was just very slow service. We were hopeful that the food would at least be good. The most tasty thing we had was the shrimp appetizer, which only had 3 shrimp we waited an insanely long time to receive our dinner. I was so excited to finally get my scallop dish. Scallops are my favorite food! It came with 3 teeny tiny overcooked scallops with very bland sides for 41 dollars. The server was incredibly sweet and i felt super bad because it was just an overall really bad experience but it wasn't her fault. I hope you can turn things around in the future for your wine country guests. read more

This place was MAGNIFICENT. Upscale dining with a comforting, family dinner feel. Javier, Stephanie and the rest of the staff were attentive and warm, and really went out of their way to make this a special experience. The food was delicious - both gourmet yet approachable - and the recommendations for wine were spot on. We especially loved the duck and the cioppino. Rarely do you have a dining experience so memorable that you can't wait to tell everyone about it! It felt as if they were welcoming us (and the tables around us) to Newberg, with great food but also recommendations for things to do in the area. Well, we're on a visit to my son's, and we're off on a wine tasting jaunt. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I've never actually been wine tasting! Luckily, we've picked a glorious day. Randomly picked this place on the way out of town and were pleasantly surprised. I like the cavelike feel. There was only one server, so service was a bit slow at times, but she was pleasant and very knowledgeable. Here's what we had: Cuban Pork Sandwich $13 Roasted Cuban Pork, Black Forest Ham, Swiss Cheese, Pickle & Mustard Sauce Served Warm on Grilled Ciabatta: 3.5 stars This was served with fries on the side. Tasty with some good pulled pork, but it was on a tiny little ciabatta the size of small hamburger bun. Very small portion Korean Beef Lettuce Wrap (GF) $14 Korean Seasoned Braised Beef with Pineapple Ginger Relish and Carrot Radish Salad: 4 stars Flavors were great, except the relish was a bit too sweet, since the beef already had a sweet note. It was a reasonable portion, the salad was particularly good. Carrot and radish - going to have to try that at home Mid-Eastern Chicken Shawarma Pizza with Garlic Sauce, Tomato, Cucumber, Pickled Red Onion, Parsley $14: 3.5 stars They make all their breads and their pizza dough in house. It was quite good, but this was kind of an odd idea for a pizza; kind of like a Greek salad on a pizza. Overall it was a good experience. Just needed some little tweaks. On the way to spirit mountain casino to kick off the birthday week, my friend, Phil S., suggested this place on the way for some food bites. When we arrived, we walked downstairs and entered into a quaint and beautiful setting. The servers were very friendly and greeted us. We sat in the restaurant lobby and glanced at the menu. The happy hour is definitely a winner by my book - half off of various plates and the "small plates" weren't really small. Don't get me wrong, they were not really huge either but they certainly satisfied our appetites. I ordered the creamy wild mushroom risotto along with the puff pastries filled with goat cheese and seasoned mushrooms. My friend's ordered oysters and beer sausage of the day. The food arrived promptly and we stuck with water during our visit. Another plus was that there was no drink requirement. The puff pastries were definitely my favorite and I'm still kicking myself for not taking a photo. 3 good size pastries were laid out and I savored each bite. The biscuit was flaky, not dry, and a hint of butter went a long way. The seasoned mushrooms were some of the best I've ever had. The sausage was a pretty good size and it came with sauerkraut. It also was well seasoned and did not taste greasy. The risotto filled me up just right with a great portion and I even shared LOL. The total bill for all we ordered came to under 20 bucks for 3 people. The owner was on site and is a great fellow to chit chat about wine and various events they have planned for the restaurant. This dining experience has inspired my first Yelp review! Food was great, wine and cocktails were solid. Atmosphere was lacking, given the relatively bright overhead lights and sterile decor. It gave this upscale restaurant a kind of cafeteria vibe. Service was somewhat slow and very scattered. Our waiter seemed wired, his pupils were massive, he was gurning and complaining of being overheated. I'm slow to judge on these things, but as far as I could tell (in my... experience), he was clearly under the influence of something. A woman who appeared to be the owner interrupted our table's conversation multiple times to suggest seating rearrangements and discuss the restaurant. The whole evening gave a weird energy. If I could keep the food and replace everything else, I would. Can't say I'd recommend. read more

Under new management. We had a bad experience. Super slow kitchen. The appetizers took a very long time to come out. Then the main course took a very long time. And then one meal came out 20 mins before the other five. The food that came out late was not hot. The duck was so so. The gnocchi was bad. The pork was bland. The scallops were not good and the polenta it came with was gross. The wait staff couldn't answer basic questions about the food. But the bread basket with butter was great. I genuinely hate leaving such a negative review but feel the feedback is needed. My fiancé brought me here for Valentine's Day for a 4 course meal, and we were extremely let down. We had a 7:30 reservation and didn't get served our first course for 1.5 hours. By the time we got our dessert, it was past 10pm. For $130 per person, we expected superb food like previous reviews had shown. The food was quite bland and to be honest, barely warm. It was a huge let down for the price that we weren't even served bread at the table. Our 1 cocktail took over 45 minutes to get to the table. I've been coming to this resturaunt for the past few years and the food has always been good! I would bring my family and we would always have small plates. However the last few times my wife and I have gone there was a very agressive waiter who initially had great recommendations for food but the topics for speaking with us were very uncalled for. He insinuated we smoked pot, and then proceeded to make similar suggestive advances about what our plans were for after dinner. (I guess because we're from California like the waiter, and in our young twenties unlike the waiter who was in his mid to late forties, it insinuates we smoke) Further he spilled water on my phone (laying on the table) and then never provided napkins or apologized for the incident. (A waitress came over an handed us napkins, but the other waiter continued to serve us) Afterward he asked my wife the next time she planned on coming in which was creepy and uncomfortable. We will no longer be going to this resturaunt, and recommend the "social" practices change. Otherwise the food is great, but the service at the time was terrible. read more
