The food has always been great, the portions are generous, and my absolute favorite is the Szechwan beef. Even their to-go packaging is fantastic, sturdy, reusable, and actually keeps your food in good shape. They recently remodeled, and the inside looks BEAUTIFUL. They have new menus that are shorter and much easier to understand, but thankfully it's still the same great food I've been coming back for all these years. The outdoor patio area is amazing too. But one of the things I love most about Chan's is that it feels like a neighborhood place. There are semi-regulars like me, and then there are the regular-regulars who seem to be there every day. It has that comfortable, familiar feeling that's getting harder and harder to find. And the karaoke! I haven't been in to sing in over a year, but I'm pretty sure the KJ would still recognize me and know exactly what song I'm going to pick. That's the kind of place this is. I've watched Chan's change over the years, but the things that matter haven't changed. Great food, huge portions, good people, fun karaoke, and a place that genuinely feels like part of the community. I've been coming here for 17 years for a reason. They also have a fantastic selection of Japanese craft beers, unique whiskies, and other interesting alcohol and non-alcohol drinks. Prices were super reasonable. But honestly, one of my favorite things about the restaurant is the decor. It feels genuinely Japanese, and there are interesting details everywhere you look, from the walls and chairs and even in the bathroom. Shelves filled with fun things like Monchichi Monkee dolls and Manga, are you kidding me? Wow! No detail was overlooked. You really feel like you've stepped into an authentic Japanese izakaya. Large parking lot with easy parking too. In addition to the food and decor, the staff were also incredibly friendly and welcoming. I find the food here to be of good quality. The skewers I had had a delicious savory flavor and the asparagus rolls were really great. In fact, I'd suggest the vegetarian rolls any day of the week. They are lighter on the palate and I think will surprise people with how good they are. One of the nicest things about Mirakutei is that they offer gluten free ramen noodles. My wife is gluten intolerant and having gluten free noodles is awesome. I gave them a try and I'd say they are 85% of the way to your standard glutinous ramen noodle - which is pretty good I'd say. I'm always impressed when they can get gluten free food close to the original. My kid goes crazy for the unagi here. The unagi is nice and meaty with a good sweet sauce on the top. It's what keeps him coming back for more. I will note that one this most recent visit during lunch he (of his own fault) fell out of the chair and broke the bowl. All the rice and unagi fell to the ground. The staff at Mirakutei were quick to sweep it all up and make him a new one (on them). We found that to be extremely classy and appreciated that greatly. We'll certainly be back here when we next visit the Portland area... my kid will make sure of it.

Fries looked great (hand cut) but upon us closer inspection in the low light, you could see they were 50% those tiny peel pieces that get burned when frying. Guys! Actually this was delicious (if a bit overcooked) and it will my leftover lunch (toddler didn't eat it but that isn't the pasta's fault).
