I have to start with mentioning the service we received from Todd. 5+ stars easily! He did a thorough job, explain explaining each of our tasting courses and was very personable and attentive. We had a great table with a nice view. We began with the grilled Foie Gras add-on to the tasting menu. We chose the four course tasting menu @$225/pp, but there was also a 5 course and a 7 course available. The chef's presentation on each course was outstanding; almost too pretty to eat. Each course ranges from pretty good to exceptional in flavor. My only disappointment was that the duck and the Wagyu steak could have been cooked slightly more; and I was definitely expecting a buttery flavor from the Wagyu steak versus slightly tough. I requested medium rare for both the duck and the Wagyu, but these were rare. I would've preferred the duck to have a crispy skin for example. read more

I would give 3.5 stars if I could. Food was quite tasty for the most part. Dishes were beautifully presented. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu, which was very reasonably priced. Options had a little bit of everything to please many different tastes. Service was extremely friendly. Restaurant nicely decorated. For the most part this should have been a great experience, and it wasn't bad, but man oh man was service slower than watching grass grow. For 2 people, a 5 course dinner took over 3 hours. It became so ridiculously long that we began to time the service between courses. On average we waited 20 minutes between each course. Which would lead me to my next comment - some of the dishes were barely warm if at all. My foie gras was not warm at all. The scallops had great color from a sear but the outside was soft as if they had been sitting for a long time. My pork entree was barely warm, and although should have come medium, it had zero pink to it and was overcooked by the time it got to me. Again, seems like it had been sitting in the window for a long time. The spatzel on the dish was almost cold. My husband had the wagyu beef. And although I appreciated the creativity of the beef tallow candle, for me the culinary fauxpas was the fact that the wick and the metal bottom in the tallow were not edible. Everything on/in the plate should be edible. I would have made the wick out of something organic like thin strips of house made jerky or dried beef tendon and forgo the metal post. Anyway just my personal observation. We ordered Sauterne to go with dessert. Our glass of wine came out and 25 minutes later we had finished the wine before dessert even showed up. We decided to ask for the bill when the dessert came to avoid having to wait another 20-30 minutes for the check. We called for reservations snd arrived at 7:40 and checked in. The young girl stated we should be able to get inby 8:15. We check back in from sitting at the bar at 8:15 and the gentleman states we won't be sat til 8:30. We wait and wait til the young girl says our table is ready at 8:40 and confirms we're Al la cart or tasting menu. We state again we're here for the tasting menu. She states oh I just got back from college and think that tasting menu ends at 8. Obviously we could have just ordered a la crate while we were at the bar the past 45 minutes !!!! We truly enjoyed the service at Jory. Wait staff were so well-trained, attentive and friendly. The restaurant is very business hotel lobby. Kind of plain. If not for the open kitchen I woud have thought it was a lounge. We had the four and five course tasting menu. Very pretty to look at, but not a single thing made us say "yum" - excepting the veggies (amazing tomatoes!). We had Australian wagyu, Australian lobster, halibut and sturgeon. Everything was bland. The sturgeon in carrot broth was especially bland. Overall, pretty disappointing. Other reviewers mention amazing hamburgers and fish and chips. We ordered the tasting menu as the regular dinner menu (burgers, fish and chips, bolognese) was more pub-like. I think pub items may be what they do better. We also had room service breakfast this morning, which arrived cold and also was just ok. We will likely eat off property for our remaining time at the hotel. Again, staff are fabulous!!! Steak $80 Steelhead Rabbit Veggie dish 3 different salads Rack of lamb Didn't really feel like meat so I literally just ordered the Cesar. What a very expensive disappointing dinner. I know holiday meals are a challenge but there are some basics. We walked in and waited at least 10 minutes before anyone acknowledged much less welcomed us. After getting seated and ordering a cocktail, the meal with wine pairings was off sync. Our bubbly was delivered along with the first course wine and dish. Then the salad came while we still had our first course wine and then the pairing came. Voila our main wine came and we waited and waited for the main. Finally it came with congealed gravy & rubbery skin - waiters explanation was the kitchen thought it already came out. Dessert and port pairing came together. Soup and dessert were the best courses. Wine pairing was definitely not worth $75! Meanwhile tables were getting adjusted and chairs carried around. We weren't able to stay at the Allison Inn on this trip as they were fully booked and we planned our trip super last minute, however, we did meet with friends for Sunday brunch at Jory. The service was great, however the food was just okay. The hash of the day was "smoked prime rib" - there were only a few small pieces of prime rib and the dish was 85% roasted purple potatoes that had so much garlic that I'm not sure even Emeril Lagasse would approve. The cubes of beef were underseasoned and without any discernible smoke flavor. The crab benedict was better than the hash, but still nothing amazing. Add to that, it's a $50 corkage fee for outside wines, which seems quite steep. For reference, the Painted Lady, which is by far a better and more upscale restaurant, also charges $50 for corkage. I get that it's a convenient option when staying at the inn, and perhaps lunch and/or dinner service are significantly better, but this just didn't blow us away, especially for the money. There are so many amazing restaurants in Newberg that it would seem a shame to use one of just a few meals on your short vacation at Jory, at least for Sunday brunch. read more

It's possible the restaurant was having an off-night, but the food was shockingly mediocre. The service, wait staff, and front of house were generally good, but that's the only positive thing I can write about this restaurant. The pork tenderloin entree was dry, overcooked and the BBQ sauce that lacquered the pork felt less nuanced or composed and tasted like it was squeezed out of a store-bought BBQ sauce bottle. The "popcorn grits" were pieces of stale popcorn thrown haphazardly on what looked and tasted like a cold, congealed, gelatinous mass of leftover grits. The chinook tartare appetizer allegedly had yuzu as one of its main components, but the yuzu must have been left out and the appetizer lacked any flavor, depth, brightness or acidity. Bland and forgettable appetizers all-around. On the contrary, the Wagyu steak was cooked properly and could pass muster for fine dining. Here was the lone dish that was edible. For a restaurant that purports to be a high level establishment, not clearing food crumbs off a table after a bread service seems to signal a lack of attention to detail. While the dessert options attempted to be imaginative, they also fared no better in their execution and spelled the death knell for a subpar culinary experience. The Willamette Valley boasts Michelin-level chefs and much better food options. Sadly, this place may be past its prime and on the decline. An extreme disappointment. read more

I made a dinner reservation on OpenTable a few weeks ago because I had also booked a room at the hotel to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. I love when a restaurant is available to book on OpenTable because it's convenient and easy to modify if needed. We arrived shortly after 7pm on a Thursday evening and were seated right away. The restaurant was lively and it was neat view all the action in the open kitchen. I immediately knew it would be a good meal. Service was 5 star. Several staff members greeted us and each was super warm, attentive and helpful. We ordered the brioche bread to start which was a nice treat. I especially loved the butter topped with sea salt. The Jory garden salad was another favorite with fresh greens, red onions, fresh Parmesan and hazelnuts and cherries. For our entrees we had the chinook and the pork loin with potatoes - every single thing looked and tasted great, was perfectly cooked and beautifully plated. I would consider this restaurant a special occasion place and it didn't disappoint. I rarely write a negative review and always try to give the BOH benefit of the doubt, but I have to say we were pretty dissatisfied with our dinner at Jory. Which is truly sad because we had been looking forward to coming here for a while. The staff was very kind, the bussers were top notch and the property was gorgeous. We did a four course tasting experience which unfortunately lasted over 3 hours with over 30 minute waits in between courses. My fiances second course (the duck) which was very flavorful came out cold. My first course (lobster) was not to my liking but the more I thought about the dish I thought it was just flat in texture/flavor, especially compared to his octopus dish. I ended up boxing my third course in hopes of saving some time, but he loved his Wagyu. Dessert was the star for me. But with a long wait time and a warm/stuffy room I didn't feel like our $400+ dinner (including 2 glasses of wine and generous tip included) was worth it. The couple next to us had a similar unhappy experience and left early. Perhaps it was an off day in the kitchen, leaving things a little bottlenecked, but I'm not sure if we would come back. The atmosphere is beautiful, the service is slick and professional and the food is amazing. We started with Shelly's biscuits. I don't know who Shelley is but her biscuits are second to none. Chewy crispy and lots of flavor with the flake salt. I know I ate too many of these. I got the burger. It was probably the best burger I've had in a long time. Juicy and well seasoned and cooked exactly how I wanted it. My only complaint is that the onion relish is more bitter than sweet but I have a sweet tooth so I'm sure someone else would find the burger perfect. They make everything. The burger meat, the bacon, the ham for the Benedict, the ice cream. Everything is house made and you can tell you are eating superior ingredients. The cooking is very flavorful and creative. The food was ok, everything had a lot of oil and overall didn't work great for me. The service was slow. Great environment! When my sister and I got salmon, the waitress told us they usually cooked the salmon medium rare. With this information we asked for the salmon to please be medium to medium well. However, when the salmon came out mine was definitely cooked medium rare, slightly too raw for me, but overall good. Although my salmon was fine, when my sister's salmon came out it was very raw, which you could see in the difference in color between the two salmons. We didn't come to the Jory to eat sushi. Coming into the Jory we had high expectations by the beautiful hotel and well decorated environment. However, we were not overly impressed with the food. With all that said, we tried again for breakfast and wile the avocado toast was drenched in oil, the breakfast omelette was delightful and had a great flavor. read more

Had a great experience with excellent service, but did smell like a campfire when we left. Suggestions would be to sit away from the kitchen as they have real woodburning fire. We spent $350 plus tip making it $450 for two people. We each had a meal with steak tartar, brought our own wine and had two cocktails. Woke up in the middle of the night violently ill. Called to let the restaurant know and they reassured me that everything is fresh daily and they hope that we come try it again. The kitchen manager never offered anything for our troubles. This review is for breakfast only. We got coffee promptly and ordered breakfast a crab Benedict and avocado toast. They did not arrive until 945am. Our server was pleasant and friendly but clearly working too many tables. She was out of sight for quite awhile. We noticed a few other diners were asking about their food too. Both dishes were delicious unfortunately the crab came cold it was supposed to be warm. I asked for nuclear bacon, (that means crispy), with my avocado. It came limp and soft. We sat at a beautiful table in the back that was private, and it was perfect for the occasion. We started out with some bubbles and then enjoyed brunch. We started out with the biscuits. They were amazing and a must try. I ordered the avocado toast with a poached egg, and it was made perfectly with seasonal vegetables and goat cheese. The service from the moment we walked in was the best I've had anywhere from the host to the server! They had a special menu for Easter, and it was pretty small but I still wanted everything on it! I decided on a brunch classic eggs benny, and my lady got the Dungeness crab eggs Benedict. They gave us a small plate of fruit and assorted pastries to start our meal and it was all so good. The fruit had dragon fruit, melon, and assorted berries. There was a strawberry lemonade scone, a blueberry lavender cake and a chocolate chip coffee muffin. When we got our food we were so shocked with the presentation we didn't want to ruin it, luckily our appetites had other ideas! Everything was so good, hollandaise light, airy, and rich. Eggs perfectly poached, ham just salty enough and a little smokey, English muffin perfectly toasted and right amount of chew. Potatoes perfectly crispy, and the little salad brought the right amount of freshness to cut through the richness of everything else. The crab Benedict was so succulent and rich, I could have eaten all of that one too! I can't wait to come back and try the burger. This is definitely a special occasion type restaurant because it's quite pricy, but if you check it out you'll see why.
