Bread

Focaccia bread was the best thing we consumed here. Tofu was fishy tasting, i like how you can make your own spritz, duck was cooked like a steak with fermented vegetables, and miso cod was soft and light but i wish it was served hot.

Super cute interior and ambiance. We did the "kick back", which was their version of a tasting menu. It was $84/person but included dessert. Based on the portions, I'm not sure if it would have been cheaper to just order off the menu since all of them were shared plates. However, we did get to try everything on the menu except for the confit potatoes and the gigante beans. The sesame focaccia and the endive salad were highlights for me, with the raab tempura as the runner up. Unfortunately the two main dishes were less exciting. The cod dish was very salty and while the fish was juicy and tender, it was so salty we didn't eat the lentils. We provided this feedback and the waitress just thanked us for it. The pork chop was rather fatty and had some gristle on it but the flavor was very good. One other disappointing thing to note is that we were there celebrating a birthday, which was noted on the reservation, and we received no acknowledgement of that. Meanwhile, the table next to us had a dessert with a candle on it.

Sesame focaccia with koji butter -- I might marry this bread

We had had a fantastic dining experience at Hayward on Thursday night. We started with the sesame focaccia served with koji butter - absolutely delicious! The focaccia had the perfect hearty texture and the koji butter was a wonderful, flavorful addition. For the main course, we shared a pork chop, which came with squash curry and tempura turnip. The pork chop was perfectly cooked, tender and juicy. However, one end had quite a bit of gristle, which was a bit of a letdown. On the other hand, the tempura turnip was a revelation - I might have just found the only way to ever enjoy turnips again! We paired the meal with a bottle of Oregon wine, which complemented the flavors beautifully. The staff was exceptional - attentive, knowledgeable, and so friendly. They made the experience even more enjoyable. All in all, it was a lovely dinner, and I highly recommend this spot for a great meal. Oh -- also, it's inside Mac Market (which is a super cute eating/drinking/shopping place with several tenants in a converted warehouse) but I heard from another patron that they are moving to a standalone in another town.

Great buzzy dining spot in the heart of downtown Carlton. Love the mini portions of cocktails! Service is friendly and not fussy at all. Interesting interpretations using local products.

We had a wonderful experience here. The restaurant is located in an open loft warehouse space shared with other businesses. The menu seems to rotate often depending on what's in season. On the night that we went, the grilled psb (purple sprouting broccoli) was probably the star of the show. The grill flavor was great and it was well seasoned. The chitara pasta was a little salty for me but I liked the handmade noodles. The restaurant was able to prepare a kids pasta (with butter and parmesan) for our four-year old. The sturgeon we ordered was cooked perfectly. The etcetera cocktail was excellent. Service was great too. Would definitely come back here.

Sunchoke dish. It was fantastic!

The birdhouses in particular were absolutely lovely and added so much charm to the space. The tasting room takes walk-ins, and were greeted as soon as we entered and told we could sit anywhere. Our sommelier was absolutely delightful-- there were two women working and both were so, so friendly and made us feel very welcome. We tasted one white (a Chardonnay that I actually quite liked despite it being my least favorite white wine) and a number of reds. When they poured the various pinot noirs, they brought a second glass and had us do a side-by-side comparison. I absolutely LOVE it when tasting rooms make the effort to do this-- it really brings us the differences in the wines so you can tell what you're trying. We also tasted a red blend and a syrah. The syrah was my favorite. In the midst of us tasting the reds, the women pouring for us brought out a couple of chocolate hearts, which was really the cherry (or the chocolate) on top. It's been hard in the past couple of years to find people that offer such a wonderful experience at this price point ($20)-- especially if you're a younger person. I can truly say that this was wonderful, and we will absolutely return next time we are in the Valley.

The fried chicken sandwich is always juicy and with just enough heat. Sitting either at the bar or outside is great. I will be bringing out of town guests here as a must do.

However service was very slow as it appears it was only one server and the other was the bartender but would help out occasionally. Food also took a while to come out and were served our main courses before our appetizer and salad. I also felt like the prices were quite expensive for a small town like Carlton. For food we ordered the renegade potato's, a house salad, French toast and the biscuit and gravy. The renegade potato's were so good! Nice crispy potato with a spicy aioli! The house salad was a little disappointing. It was pretty but it didn't have the seasonal fruit that I was looking forward to. French toast was decent; a nice crispy brioche French toast with what appears to be a homemade blueberry jam. But this didn't wow me as much as I thought it would. The biscuits and gravy was interesting though and almost tastes like a spicy sausage gravy. If you're in the area, I would definitely check this place out! But if not, it probably isn't worth the drive.
