We have been wanting to try this bakery since we pass it all the time and a few friends gave us good reviews. So today my husband went to place an order for some pies for Christmas. The first thing to strike me was the heft of the cake, it felt like 5 pounds of crumb toppings. Along with powdered sugared adorning surface and delicately crevices of crumb streusel forming into deep layers. The signature Crumb Cake After cutting a corner slice I could see the really amazing ratio of crumb to cake, which I can swear is about 70% crumb to 30% cake. I just happened to stumble across this bakery in search of the best crumb cake in New Jersey (I was visiting from California). Another bakery was recommended, however, they were closed for the week. This bakery is pretty far away but when we heard they had great crumb cake, we made the trip. Spoiler alert, it's really good and worth the effort. We also tried the butter cake but it wasn't any where near as good as the crumb cake. They have a great selection of other products and temptations and we expect to try others in future visits. Came here after discovering that it might rival the best crumb cake I have ever had- B&W bakeries in Hackensack. Unfortunately, was disappointed and highly recommend anyone to go to B&W if they want the BEST crumb cake ever. Lets start by the fact that for 2 crumb cakes it cost $27- we literally thought we heard the woman wrong. This is a bit ridiculous. However, we thought maybe it is worth it. Eh, it wasn't. The crumb cake is very moist- more so than B&W- but it totally lacked any flavor. No cinnamon, no butteriness, no real taste. I feel that they almost make their crumbs with crisco or vegetable shortening rather than butter, which totally simplifies the taste. Stopped in here Saturday afternoon while running another errand. They were out of crumb cake so this review is not about that (I still want to try them based on the hype). We got a big chocolate chip cookie and a Linzer tart. The cookie looked great, it also had a great texture. It just was bland and didn't have a good flavor. Even the chocolate chips weren't great and how do you mess up chocolate chips? They only tasted vaguely like chocolate. Now the linzer tart. I love linzer tarts, they are my favorite treat from a bakery. These things are not it. The cookie part was a weird texture and tasteless. We have been frequenting this baker for several years. After today, we will no longer conduct business here. My other half went in to pick up a crumb cake. As she was paying, the baker came out of the back, carrying the crumb cake, wearing no mask during a nation-wide pandemic. Large assortment of pastries which makes it difficult to decide. Thought the apricot danish and Almond crumb cake was good. Almond crumb cake came in squares so you could get one piece instead of buying a whole loaf. Tried the chocolate cake as a sample and didn't think it was that great. Also tried the sour cream donut and it tasted like fried chicken - seems like they need to change the oil in the fryer more often. Also tried a cookie with raspberry filling which wasn't bad. Great bakery (that appears to specialize in quantity over quality) with some items definitely better than others. What's better than their food ? The service. The girls up front are polite, patient and welcoming (even behind a mask). We had this amazing butterkuchen that was so perfectly buttery, soft, sweet, and warm. But this bakery wasn't like that. Same with the crumb cake. Overall I thought it was way too heavy. When I called to ask what to do, as I now live 40 min away, I was told I can bring the cake back for a credit. Oh and I have to bring the cake back. Unreal. No offer of a refund only a credit. No offer to send me a check just a return for some other baked good that I didn't want. Now 24 hours later the owner calls me and Yells at me. WTH? Horrible customer service. This is a bakery. Especially the one I remember when growing up. The bakery was special and unique. Every day the product was fresh and made onsite. Nothing was different. It was all made there and was made the way it was suppose to be made. Fresh for the day. This was a bakery. There where breads, and cakes, and crumb cakes, and bagels, and cookies. Lots of cookies. And don't forget the special items and a cake you might need for a special event. You would order it here and they would make it for you. Birthday cakes. Party cakes. Wedding cakes. It was here. And the prices were reasonable for whatever you wanted. This is stuff that was not from the grocery store in a box. These were items that where made there everyday and waiting for you. I went in today and got the crumb cake, the strudel, a few bagels and, what to many of us is the topper....the black-and-white cookie. So perfect. And not sweet. We like it and will go back. Positives: 1. "Triple Threat" doughnut was really great. Despite being full of sinfully deliciously balanced sweet chocolate flavor, the most striking thing was the soft and delicate texture of this cake doughnut's dough. I should have asked what constitutes the chocolate triumvirate, but obviously there were chocolate chips and a chocolate ganache, with the third element probably the actual chocolate in the dough or what could be chocolate pudding incorporated into the dough to explain that super delicate texture. 2. Tiramisu doughnut was very good, but no Triple Threat. The cream was a nicely rich mascarpone and the glaze imparted a equally nicely flavored mild coffee flavor. This yeast doughnut's dough was buttery and pretty airy. 3. The signature Crumb Cake was awesome and definitely worth the trip to try. The first thing to strike me wasn't the powdered sugared adorned surface nor the delicately creviced crumb streusel, but the heft of the cake. After cutting a corner slice I could see the really amazing ratio of crumb to cake, which I can swear is about 70% crumb to 30% cake. The cake portion was pretty interesting, as it was a little more dense than I expected and the flavor really reminded me of a danish. So you have a Crumb Cake Danish, which I'll sign up for anytime! Negative: 1. PB&J doughnut was not to my liking. The doughnut itself was fine, which was a plain sugared yeast doughnut, but I did not enjoy the PB&J filling. Peanut butter was pretty bland and what flavor was present was an unpleasant oily flavor. Jelly tasted like a grape jelly and was pretty pedestrian. For the Crumb Cake and "Triple Threat" doughnut alone, a trip to Styertowne is really worth it! read more

Yes, I know this is the second post in a row of Non-Italian foods or desserts but I promise I'll have many coming up this week. Jimmy Fallon may have crowed B&W Crumbcake the greatest in the world but the people at Styertowne Bakery beg to differ. This cash-only Bakery located in a strip mall just off Route 3 in Clifton has been around since 1949 and they also have their own heavy crumb cake. And at first glance, you may think in fact your about to have B&W. But once you bit into a piece, those that have grown up with B&W, will taste the difference. That doesn't mean Styertowne isn't good, far from it. Styertowne's crumb cake is actually sweeter with slightly less crumb and more cake. It's also a little less dense than B&W with the cake being airier. It's one of the better crumb cakes you'll ever have. I'm sure that there are the 2 teams screaming at their screens that one is better than the other but I'd be happy with either one with my cup of coffee.
