I was able to have one of their cakes that was being served at an engagement party. I did not actually attend this establishment, but it seems like they have a number of baked goods to choose from. The black and white cake was tried. It was a chocolate and white cake with a chocolate pudding filling as well as a chocolate icing. There were white cake crumbs around the side as well. It was also customized, which was nicely presented. The cake itself was a standard and normal cake, not dry, but not moist either. The icing was tasty while the pudding filing made for a refreshing treat. Will I go back? I would head there. read more

My wife told me we needed to go get some bread to go with dinner, so I'm thinking we're just going to the local store but my wife brought me here. Bread was fresh and absolutely delicious. You got to get the good stuff when having a nice Ziti dinner on a Sunday. They also have every goodie you can imagine. Yes, I'll admit it. We left with a strawberry shortcake and one of those fruit custard cups as well. Easily could've went with a cannoli cake or the 7 layer cookies. Service was excellent. The girl that helped us was very helpful. We got one of those large round Italian breads and they'll slice it for you as well. I have been going to Gencarelli's for 10 years - for all special occasions--but will not return. Last week I ordered a custom cake and paid extra for the filling. Please understand that I don't mind paying for a good cake but certainly not one that I had to throw away. The icing was so sweet and sugary that my teeth hurt. The flavor was horrible and not one of my guests asked for another slice or complimented the cake. Not only that, most guests took one forkfull and left the rest on their plates. I threw the remainder away when I got home. So disappointed in Gencarelli's and will go to Shop Rite for a cake before stepping foot in Gencarelli's. Their quality is non-existent. Negative thing first... please use bigger boxes instead of cramming the desserts in (especially the more delicate mini cakes made of mousse). We bought $20 worth of mini desserts and the girl handed us a suspiciously small box. In the car we opened it to makes sure all 5 were in there... the pretty strawberry mousse was crammed on its side, and strawberry shortcake was squashed in a corner. That one was a ball when we took it out... At least this was just for our family, but if we were gifting this to someone (as we sometimes do) this would be embarrassing! The desserts were still delicious, as malformed as some of them were. If you care about the presentation, I'd be wary and tell them to use a roomier box. They would get 5 stars for great taste and selection, one star docked for this issue. (Note: we never encountered this problem in the Wayne location) read more

Whenever I'm in Montclair or Bloomfield area, I love stopping by Gencarelli's to get sweets! I got the rainbow cake that reminds me of spumoni cookies, strawberry shortcake, a pound of cookies, chocolate pound cake and macaroons!! Get me a cup of tea, and I'm good!! So delicious and one of my absolute favorites. They have such a great selection of pastries, cakes , breads so hard to not walk in there and not want to buy the whole store . I was so very disappointed by the Oreo cake I purchased from Gencarelli's on 10-11. This is my wife's actual birthday. I purchased it for her birthday. The Oreo cookies and the cake were very stale. I purchased the cake at 4:30pm and went straight to my apt in Bloomfield which is a 5 min ride and placed in the fridge. She didn't eat her piece as it was very stale. No one did to be honest. We got a cake from Gencarelli's for my sister's bridal shower and it was very yummy! It was vanilla cake with a filling of cannoli cream, fresh strawberries and mini chocolate chips. The frosting was buttercream. The only reason I didn't give a full 5 stars is because I wasn't so much a fan of the frosting. I've had buttercream before from other bakeries and really liked it, but I ended up leaving the icing from the leftover slices I ate the following day and not eating any of it. I've been her MANY times over the past few months and have enjoyed everything! Their vanilla and chocolate cake is moist and the right amount of sweet, their cannoli's are heavenly, and don't even get me started on their Italian cookie selection *chef's kiss* (I could eat an entire 1lb box myself). The majority of the time, their Lobster tails are beautifully crispy on the outside and the light creamy filling is excellent, but there have been one or two times where the lobster tails are a little bit soft and soggy likely from being filled for a while. I also find that their doughnuts can sometimes be tough/ over-kneaded and stale. Overall, I would recommend this place if you're assigned dessert to a dinner party or you're just in the mood for a sweet treat! read more

Any time it's someone's birthday or it's a special occasion, I know I can always count on Gencarelli's to come through with that amazing hazelnut mousse cake! It is literally eating a ginormous Ferrero Rocher cake. You really can't go wrong - everyone LOVES it. I typically don't have a sweet tooth but I remember the first time I had the cake at my friend's birthday, I was sharing the slice with someone else (which I usually do) but decided I needed my own piece because it's just so darn good. The cakes come in different sizes but the generic one in the display is approximately $25 which is a good deal! All their desserts are really good, I'm also a huge fan of the pistachio mousse cake as well but they only sell those in the single serve size. Parking can be a bit tough especially on the weekends (parking is much easier in the Wayne one but I still think the pastries are better here). Definitely call in advance to ensure they have what you need. Always buy a box of assorted pastries on the side - try as many as you can, it's so good :) The one thing I do wish they had here was a punch card for the amount of cakes I've bought because that would be really nice haha. Although the lines can be long, it moves very quick. Staff here is very friendly! read more

I came here for the first time and I ordered the infamous Ferrero Mousse Cake. I told them its a special occasion, so I would like to get some very pretty decor with roses and happy birthday writing on the top of the cake. When I came to pick it up, I got a nice cake with modest goldish decor but no happy birthday. It turned out to be someone else's cake which has already been payed. I could have taken for free basically, if I stay silent about it. When finally I got my own, I was even more disappointed, this had no decoration, no happy birthday, they forgot everything I asked for. I had to spent there about 40 mins to get my cake and make the cake look like an actual birthday cake. They added some very simple roses and I asked them to put the writing on a gold colored board which they never did. The cake did not look as pretty as i hoped for a birthday. The cake was tasty, but way too sweet, I would like it better with more cake in it, not only this mousse. You eat one slice and thats it, too much of it. I do not have any other experience with this place, but according to my first time, they seem to be very unorganized, I would not order from here again. I was not that crazy about this cake, specially not the quick but slowly made decor, plus the fact they finished it while I was there, not a good sign.. And when I called to complain the manager had a little bit of an attitude. i'm sorry, but you need to check the custard in your items that have been sitting for more than two days when we got home, the custard was rancid Again, will you still love this bakery haven't been there in a while now because of the last two times things were spoiled and rotten. Everybody knows that custard should be light and a light color yellow and when we got them home, they were a dark colored yellow and almost hardened, and the texture and tasted bad. I ask the young girl behind the counter to hook me up with the most popular items. In return I received a hazelnut mousse cake and an apple strudel. Amazing. Both were so good, I, along with everyone who tasted, could not tell you which one was enjoyed more. The hazelnut mousse cake was basically a giant Ferrero Roucher (yes, it was amazing). It was "light" and fluffy and not overloaded with sweetness. It was a chocolate hazelnut lovers dream. This bad boy did ring in at $19. The apple strudel was 'da 'bomb. Perfect flaky crust, sweet and tart apple filling, all dusted with powder sugar. I dare say I may have liked this more. This slice of heaven (or should I say this log of heaven) rang in at $6. I was a little hungry while there and did not know when I would be eating so I ordered a Foccacia roll to go. Topped with rosemary and parmesean, this roll though not tasting that fresh was extremely delicious and filled that void in my stomach. This place is busy and therefore, parking is limited and I must say, it is kind of a cluster f*ck. Be prepared to look for a little street parking action. Come here for the cakes, the round cakes, specialty for their small round cakes. My personal favorite cake here is the Hazelnut Mouse Cake. I actually got a full-sheet of this cake for my father's birthday and it was SO good! It literally tastes like a Ferrero Rocher, so if you are a fan of that cake, definitely get it and try! Other favorites of mine include the tiramisu, cheesecakes and the red velvet cake. In addition, I never get tired of getting their cannolis here, so simple, yet so satisfying!
