UPDATE: A couple of weeks ago, I stopped in Mattarello's to pick up a few pastries. I purchased a mini cannoli and a plain and chocolate biscotti. (Please see attached photos). All of them were delicious! Think the biscotti was the best I ever had! I figured this would be a great place to order a Thanksgiving dessert. Last Sunday, I stopped back in. Sunima was absolutely wonderful answering all my questions about the different pies and cakes. I ended up ordering 8 inch fruit tart. (Please see attached photo). It was $52 plus tax. I ordered chocolate covered strawberries and a few other items from here and had them sent to my daughter at Montclair State University for Valentine's Day. Everything was wonderful. I called the bakery a few times - sending anything to a college dorm is a risk because it can be difficult for the driver to find and sometimes kids take deliveries that are not intended for them - but the woman on the phone was very sweet and patient and she made sure my daughter received the order. First, this will be my second 5-star review mainly because I LOVE LOVE LOVE this coffee, bakery, and cafe! They recently started brunch from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. How amazing is that!?!? Montclair needs this OR I need this. This is the first place that really pays attention to the subtle nuances of flavors. It's similar to a breakfast you'd get at a Four Seasons Hotel if you ordered room service. Not to brag but I would know. I had a Mushroom Spinach Omelet and paired it with a draft latte. I was craving a chocolate covered croissant and there aren't a ton of places that do that in my area. I found this place that had ok reviews so I thought I'd give it a try. I ended up getting everything but a croissant (which they had). I do want to point out, I ordered delivery at 4pm so of course it's not going to be the freshest. I tried the lobster tail, carrot cake and a custard donut. The lobster tail was really good, it was stuffed with a cream that was unexpected but delicious. It wasn't too sweet which is nice and had the perfect crunch. It didn't taste super fresh because it's not, at 4pm, but still hit the spot. The carrot cake was probably one of the best I've tried in NJ. It wasn't too sweet, it was very moist, and I regretted only getting the small size. The custard donut was very good, the custard had a lemony taste. The dough was soft and fluffy. I will definitely be buying more from here (especially a large carrot cake!) read more

Such a beautiful and welcoming place. We stopped by to get a birthday cake for my daughter and decided to stay there to continue celebration with the cake and the candles. The host was very welcoming and helped us with lighting up the cake sparkles. The bakery had a big selection of cakes, pastries and other bakery items. It is also very aesthetically pleasing! Mattarello is a must-visit cafe if you're in the Bloomfield or Montclair area. The decor is fresh and the service is wonderful. There is a large assortments of drinks and baked goods to choose from. My favorite is the maritozzo, and they make it fresh. It is the only bakery around that I know carries them. I do not understand why restaurants omit ingredients on their menu, especially when some people have food allergies. Ordered a Philly Cheesesteak sandwich, expected the beef, cheese, peppers, and onions as listed on the menu--did not expect the secret sauce which was not listed on the menu. Not even sure what this substance was, could not eat the sandwich. Service for take-out was slow. Ambiance, clean. Please learn that people read the ingredients listed on the menu, if you are adding a dressing or condiment such as ketchup, mayo, relish, sour cream etc please list it so customers can ask for this on the side or an order without a sauce they may not like or even worse may be allergic to, try not to surprise your customers nobody wants to need to use an Epi-pen due to a surprise ingredient. Responding to the push back on my review (See Leva's reply)--- it is very simple Leva---a bit of mayo will set off someone with an egg allergy. Please educate yourself about food allergies especially if you omit them from your ingredient list. Regarding your response about addressing this in person instead of over Yelp---Leva it was a "to go order" so I was not coming back to your cafe to discuss any allergic reaction--and to put this back on the customer is really telling of your poor business practices. I liked this bakery a lot. There is a certain "flavor" with a lot of bakeries were everything tastes the same and nothing tastes fresh, so finding a good bakery in New Jersey that is fresh has been a struggle for me. I was happy to find Mattarello. We got two bambolinos, three quiches and some gluten free pasties, all tasted fresh and different, so we enjoyed them. I also have to say this seems more like a pastry specialty shop than a cake specialty shop. I have seen a few reviews bashing the shop about "cakes" ... which doesn't seem fair. Love getting treats from here! They have such a great array of pastries and cakes. Customer service is very friendly and helpful at describing all of the options. Have not yet fell in love with this place. Honestly every pastry I have had was kind of old. They do offer a large variety of pastries and are very popular in the area so maybe I have been going at bad times. I have been craving a good Bombolone with yellow crème, but every time I go it just taste like it was baked the day before and doesn't offer that freshness I am looking for and the cream is bland. Will continue to give them a try while in the area. They do offer great coffee options though. read more

Perfect coffee meet up spot. There's indoor seating during these hard covid times so you are not sitting outside freezing. Tables were spaced out enough to ensure social distancing. New and very cute bakery cafe with friendly service and plenty of indoor space (with a few outdoor tables as well). There are plenty of Italian pastry options with additional bakery standards. I've gone a few times and I've been treated very well and enjoyed what I've sampled. An authentically Italian bakery. First and foremost, Amin and Eva (the owners) are so so so sweet and friendly. It's always nice to see owners interact with customers! The atmosphere is very inviting. The freshest pastries and *best* coffee I've ever had. I always get the Siciliano, which is cold frothed milk, espresso, hazelnut, whipped cream and cinnamon. If you're a coffee lover like me, you'll love this drink. It's not sweet in my opinion (which I prefer), but the espresso-to-hazelnut ratio flavor is perfect. I sometimes swap out the milk for oat milk and it tastes great! As for the pastries, wow. They are the best I've had in NJ (I'm Italian and know a great pastry haha!) between the cannoli, lobster tail, St. Joseph Zeppole, sfogliatelle, bombolone.....the list goes on. Everything is always super fresh and delicious. Their chantilly cream is to die for! My favorite pastries are the Lemon Caprese and Ricotta & Pear. There's nothing here that I wouldn't recommend! Very good Italian pastry cafe. I've been multiple times and so far they have been consistent. My favorites are the Italian ricotta cheese cake, cannoli and lemon custard tarts. What a wonderful addition to Bellevue avenue! The bakery is so nice as is the owner who was super sweet! Everything looked amazing but as someone who is dairy free I was concerned I wouldn't be able to enjoy any goodies. But have no fear!... the owner was able to point out a few dairy free/gluten free choices. I had the almond cookies which was delicious. So soft. Found this place by accident one day and probably one of the best surprises! The cheesecake was top 5 cheesecakes I've had. Chocolate mousse, lobster tail and rainbow cake was fantastic. The freshly grinded and brewed coffee was top tier amazing! Rich, bold but balanced with the perfect amount of flavor. Had a single espresso on a separate occasion and it was just as amazing. Love their Rum Baba's, cannoli, fruit cream cakes, oh everything I've had there so far! I had an Italian momma who made us rum cakes (1 year w too much rum for my 17th Birthday!). What I most like is it seems nothing is overly sweet. Im sure there's sugar but it's nicely balanced by authentic flavors. It's got a nice seated area for great Italian style coffees. I placed an order thru the app Too Good to Go for a "surprise bag". I went to pick up my bag and realized I would not be able to leave without more yummy items. The surprise bag contained (1) slice each of rum cake and nocciola cake. Incredibly fresh and delicious. With surprise bags, sometimes you can get what is truly left over. That was not the case. I also purchased a strawberry topped custard tart, a torte della nonna (pastry with lemon curd topped with pignoli nuts) and a chocolate dipped lobster tail. All to die for!! Bam! Let's get into it. At 11AM on a Saturday on my way to Anderson Park with Archie, I was hankering for a cold libation (that's right an iced coffee--it was 91 degrees). I happened to come across a new kid on the block. However, this kid had the maturity that exceeded my expectations. There were two very mature gentlemen, Ray and Bill, sitting outside on a bench. I asked (in a neighborly kind of way, "I see you have a coffee cup in your hand. Is this place any good?" One gent retorted, "this place is excellent!" Then we engaged in some small talk about Archie and how calm he was. I proceeded to enter and I was greeted enthusiastically and I was overcome by THE dessert case. There were 7 layer cookies, sfogliatelles, mini tarts, cannolis, and my all-time favorite the Italian donut, Bombolonis!!! My head went into a tailspin and my body froze into a catatonic state of Bombolionics. Seeing that I was about to black out, I ordered a La Colombe draft latte (and not in a can). In Montclair, this is a commodity as I usually have to drive to The Corner Cafe (read my previous posts on this other epic place). Anyway, I got my sh*t together and ordered two raspberry and two nutella bombolonis and was compelled to tip $10 on a $20 order--(all because my love-at-first-sight was dizzying). Mattarello is the "bomb"-oh-loni. The service, the cleanliness, the cafe's presentation; and Ray and Bill outside, strategically placed at the door, to coax you in is genius (maybe the owners?). Okay, maybe that wasn't really a setup but customers lingering are always a plus. That reminds me of a club called Regine's in the 80s (that I've read about). She closed the doors every Saturday night for the first two months of opening and had bouncers outside not letting people in. There'd be a line outside the door while inside music was blaring and strobe lights spinning. It created an illusion of exclusivity. Demand was high for entry and eventually it became a celebrity hang out constantly featured on Page Six. Nonetheless, this place is not an illusion. It's very real and just consider me a customer waiting on line outside it's doors. read more

It was a tale of two experiences. The Bombolone was great, light and the Nutella was creamy. My cafe americano was perfect also. But the lobster tail just didn't do it for me. First it had a dent on the top of it, which I can deal with, but it wasn't flaky and cream was too dense. When I bit into it there was no crisp and was chewy. Stumbled across the bakery today. Stopped in to see their selection. Nice variety of pastries, including lobster tails. They also have cakes and serve coffee. In the case was a flourless chocolate cake which looked amazing. Since we were browsing we just picked up a Lobster Tail to try. It had the perfect blend of a crunchy shell and delicious custard filling. Not too sweet. Delightful. The inside was nice and clean and the employees were friendly. Just happened upon this amazing place as the owner was taking the sfogliatella out of the oven!! OMG!! Warm custard on the inside with a nice hint of orange and crispy deliciousness on the outside!!
