    Bakery counter

I got introduced to this place by a coworker. This bakery has the best Boston cream donuts around. The dough is soft and the cream is good too. Make sure they put it in a box though. If they put it in a bag with the wax paper, the icing tends to stick to it and comes off. Thats the only downside. The service is good for a bakery. The ambiance is an ordinary bakery with lots of goodies. If in the area, definitely give them a try. I have become a recent lifelong lover of this bakery. More visits to come.

If a place does what it's supposed to do and does it well, I'm willing to overlook some issues. Deb Pam is a perfect example of that. I stopped here late Sunday afternoon on my way home from a Jersey Shore hike, hankering for some type of sweet Italian pastry. I've been to the Irish dive bar (Murph's) next door once or twice over the years, but never into the bakery. Aesthetic-wise, Deb Pam could use some work. It's pretty drab and one corner of the storefront had cleaning equipment and various items just taking up space - not particularly hospitable. When I walked in, there were two employees behind the counter, one an older woman and the other a young adult/teen. Both just stared at me, didn't say anything, and went back to cleaning up (in mild defense, it was toward the end of the day, which isn't exactly an ideal bakery time). After a minute or two of examining the items in the display counters, the older woman finally acknowledged my presence and provided assistance. I impulsively went with a homemade black and white cookie ($2), which looked significantly more appetizing than the plastic-wrapped pre-made ones I used to see in NYC bodegas all the time. It was very scrumptious - the texture was what I remembered from the lower quality versions, cakey with harder icing, but it really hit the spot. I think expectations should be lowered a bit when you go into a pastry place later in the day (though those establishments should also consider offering these items at a discounted price once you get to a certain point in the afternoon if they're not still baking fresh inventory), but I would have been perfectly satisfied with this cookie on a morning visit too. It did not last more than a few minutes. The price point is super competitive for the area - a similar cookie at the Calandra's Bakery in Fairfield would have been about twice the cost, if not more. The bedside manner of its staff leaves much to be desired, but you know what? If the product is good, I don't need to be showered with constant love and affection.

Decent cheesecake, my parents favorite . Family friend usually brings it up during the holidays. Stopped in to pick it up for my dads birthday. Pretty non descript bakery, both the gentleman who answered the phone when I called and the young lady in the store were pleasant . I called ahead to inquire if there were any covid rules that needed to be observed when I got inside, as well as if the large strawberry cheesecake would be available. When I got to the store I was able to pick up the last large cheesecake . This guy I knew picked up a cookie just to try, it was an okay cookie as well.

I am surprised not many people know about this little gem of a bakery! It was recommended to me by someone who has lived in the area for years. Ordered a cake the day before a birthday- vanilla whipped frosting, yellow cake and custard filling. It was definitely one of the better cakes I have had in a while. Was it the best I have had? No. But nonetheless it was delicious and we really enjoyed it. Just the right amount of frosting and custard. It was decorated pretty, and the handwriting on the cake was very impressive. I would absolutely order again! Great price, great quality and extremely FRESH! We had no issues with service here at all. The women at the counter were friendly and helpful. Even gave us a sample to try before we ordered! We also ordered a pound of these apple filled cookies with cinnamon sugar on the outside. DELICIOUS! Don't let the other reviews scare you away, give them a try!

***4 1/2 stars** I'm…read morenot sure how crazy I am about this place being a few blocks from where I live, but I suppose that's not Mo & Jay's fault. I've been aware of this bakery/pastry establishment for a few years (I think it showed up in this relatively new apartment building on Main Street two or three years ago), but hadn't actually thought to go inside until yesterday morning. I was entrusted with obtaining a dessert for a weekend BBQ, and it occurred to me that this was at least the easiest spot to quickly grab something. The fact that the desserts were extremely good ended up being a pleasant accident/bonus. I brought one of my top tier chums to assist with the purchase. From very brief research, it seemed like the eclairs were the big selling point here. I thought it would also be a little wily on my part to get them because I tend to not enjoy eating food that has stuff in it, and figured I'd be unlikely to do anything too naughty with that. That turned out not to be accurate, but I digress. We got the five for $25 éclair deal, and procured a raspberry, a lemon meringue, a nutella, a pistachio and a cookies & cream. Just as we were about to wrap up, I also impulsively grabbed a cheddar/bacon scone, which was humongous and understandably caught my eye. The eclairs were definitely a hit. My personal favorite was the cookies & cream. The flavor was incredibly on point, and it was almost like a meta ice cream experience. The only issue with that one specifically was that the cream inside was runnier than the other pastries, which made it a little messy. Not a huge deal. The runner-up was probably the raspberry for me. Again, extremely flavorful, almost to a fault - it was overwhelmingly tart, which is obviously kind of a calling card for raspberries but if you're not into that, I'd stay away. The nutella was actually a little on the bland side for me but not bad. The lemon meringue was a big hit for everyone else, but I'm not a huge fan of that flavor to begin with - I don't think that's a mark against this place by any means. In hindsight, we probably wouldn't have gotten the pistachio, but none of us are hardcore pistachio fans. The cream consistency and dough for all of these was very high quality, and understandably a lot of this is going to come down to how you feel about specific flavors. In a final twist later on, I sampled the scone around dinner time and was very pleasantly surprised - the scone was very moist and tasty, and was reminiscent of a Red Lobster cheddar bay biscuit, though probably at least twice the size and with actual pieces of bacon in it. Very strong recommend on that front. The service was very good. We had a pleasant female cashier assisting us as my chum was literally squatting on the ground eagerly peering into the display case squealing out flavors to get. Zero issues there, and we were in and out within a few minutes uneventfully. There were also a lot of cakes and other types of pastries, so I expect I'll be returning shortly to obtain their assistance with another BBQ.

The latte was flavorful but a little more bitter than I prefer. I also picked up some cookies. They had a good combination of jelly and cookie base with chocolate and sprinkles on one end. Every time I go in, they never have apple danish rings left but this time I was in luck. Absolutely delicious. I also tried 3 different sandwiches this time. The typical Italian sub w ham, salami and provolone. I did want banana peppers on it but they said they don't carry those. I chose it on the semolina bread. It was fantastic. I also ordered the hot roast beef sub. It came with mushrooms onions and cheese topped with gravy. The gravy was absolutely delicious but the roast beef was ok. I also ordered the chicken parm with the vodka arrabiata sauce. It was absolutely amazing. The only thing I don't love about that place is the way the lines are set up. When it's busy, you can't just place your order and keep going down the line to add it all onto one order. I had to pay 3 separate times, which is annoying. There didn't seem to be a flow with the direction of the lines. They were a little bit all over the place.

Do you ever have an experience at a place so bad that it ruins the trajectory of your whole day?…read moreThat was my morning at Jackie Smalls. I don't give out one-stars on principle unless the food is inedible or something egregious happens but I feel in this case it is warranted. This is my third time at Jackie Smalls. My first, I thought the avo toast was great. Second time I got a very bland breakfast burrito. My third, today, I brought my infant son and decided to dine in. I asked for a high chair and once seated was told by my "waiter" that he could not take my order but I had to order at the front. First issue was this high chair. Nobody knew how to adjust the straps including me, and it was some minimal little aesthetic thing that looked like he could easily topple out of. This is important later. Anyways no big deal with the ordering, front guy was accommodating and let me order from my seat. I ordered the Smalls Scramble for me and French toast for my son with the syrup and raspberries on the side, no pistachios or whip. Food takes a good bit to come out, which is no biggie either. When it arrives, they set down the French toast plate with a knife (a knife knife not a butter knife) on it in front of my son. Ok not great but I hand them the knife back. Then I try the food. Honestly, I'm not sure what to say about the food but...yikes. The eggs were certainly not soft scrambled, and the toast did not look buttered, and the weak potatoes were somewhat like a thick flaccid potato chip drenched in truffle oil and, by the way, not more than a speck of salt on anything. It looked pretty but that was about it. The French toast was deep fried or air fried and it was just not good. Sorry, no other way to say it. So I go to ask for two things: salt, and to inquire as to whether the multi-grain toast has nuts since I have an allergy and it looked concerning. I keep having to go up to these counters and leave my baby unattended in his unstable high chair because nobody will come to me and keep making me get up. I had to ask like five people about the bread until someone pulled out a binder and started looking for allergens. Everyone was just pointing me to the next person and many seemed to simply not understand my question due to a language barrier. I get my salt, and this is some COARSE salt. So I couldn't even fix the seasoning. Not flaky, but like coarse and pebbly for pickling or seasoning steaks, not for food. While I'm up and bouncing from person to person I keep gesturing at my son and nobody will come to my table. In the meantime, he smushed the raspberries and spilled the syrup and I'm back and forth between my conversation and keeping my son in his chair. At the end, I just didn't trust these people's knowledge of anything and could not eat any of my food but brought it home for my husband. It's one thing to serve food that needs a bit of work, but you need to at least offer normal table salt for folks to fix it. It's another thing to have the majority of your staff not know about allergens or how to navigate your high chairs. Also that food needed more than a little bit of work. I will say though those pancakes did look good. I will not be posting pictures for this review because I don't want to mislead with the pretty plating.
