Talk about great service and products! Called local bake shops for a cherry pie and they were all sold out, period. Called this shop and even though they sounded super busy and they had just sold their last one the lady on the phone told me to give her an hour and a half and she would make me the pie. When I got to the place it looked so homie. The ladies at the counter were so welcoming and nice. The pie was deliciously looking and warm, fresh out of the oven. Bought an additional treat and went home to enjoy the tasty cherry pie for our New Year's Eve party. Can't thank them enough for making our dad's only request possible. read more

I don't know that you could get a true idea of Varrelmann's based on my 1 purchase of a blueberry scone, but here is my review. The shop was quiet on a Sunday morning. My initial thought was that there were not many German style pastries/food like I imagined there might be (cannolis were the 1st item I saw when entering). I chose a blueberry scone to share (the price was steep at $4.50 - it would have been $1 more if I would have paid with a credit card). I the scone was slightly burnt underneath and lacked any real flavor, even the blueberries oddly had almost no flavor. Come in for the aroma and window appeal of fresh baked goods and stay for the friendly staff. While deciding what to order, which is difficult with all such variety, had a pleasant conversation with the woman about the history of the shop. If you aren't one for pleasantries, sprint over to the strudel display case and close your eyes and pick one. Can't go wrong with apple. All fresh-made on site that day. Simply phenomenal! Exceptional service from these true professionals. We were searching for authentic apple strudel, and Varrelmann's was. More importantly, it was delicious, from the apples baked perfectly to be soft with a chew and a crust of flakey strudel leaves that was crisp yet light as air, with a hint of butter. AMAZING apple strudel (we took it home and warmed up in conventional oven later in the day). Linzer cookies are authentic and delish (don't expect the American super sweet version, these are the Austrian style). I can't believe I've been in rutherford so many times and haven't thought to stop in here. It's a very quaint bakery right on Park Ave. With all the higher scale competition around, it's nice to see a small town bakery. I really just popped in to try out some treats. We left with a box with about 4 goodies in it. My favorite was the scone. Really good texture and not too sweet. The turkey sprinkle cookie was fun and delicious. We also got a raspberry nut roll which was fantastic. It was essentially super crunchy pastry wrapped around jam and nuts. Yum. We also got a coconut cupcake and that was pretty good too. They also make their own bread, they have cakes and cookies by the pound. It's always nicely decorated for the seasons. I would definitely give this place a shot. Whether you just need some fresh rolls for dinner or some treats for dessert. The service is also great, the woman that helped me out was super sweet. read more

The pastries and donuts are divine. Been there many times, But...after an encounter there recently, I'm not sure I'll go back. I tried to purchase about $7 worth of buns- at which point the gentleman rolled his eyes at me when I pulled out my card. You don't have cash?? He asked in almost disbelief. No, Sir. I asked what the minimum was, he said "not $7". My poor kids were sad they couldn't get anything. I noticed it was 15 mins til closing. I understand the charges these business face, but this man preferred to let those baked goods go stale on his shelf or throw them out rather than eat a 40 cent processing fee. Maybe it's because I'm Latino, cause the way he snatched that bag off the counter when he found out I didn't have cash... I don't think I have the heart to go back. read more

This is one of those classic German bakeries with German specialties like their heavenly apple strudel, big crumb crumb cake, cookies, cupcakes. It all old school style here. Most of the time they have the local high school kids working place. It not a sit down bakery , you just get what you want and go. You can hardly complain about the prices they average. I'm glad it's part of the downtown Rutherford Park row area, like they say more is better. read more

I went there to get a cake for my wife's Birthday, I had to wait at least 10 minutes for the woman behind the counter to finish her conversation with some guy about a yard sale that someone was having and all the things that the clerk was going to sell at the yard sale because it was cluttering up her home??? I bought a cake and it was at least 1 to 2 days old. I found out at home that the frosting was hard as a rock. I had asked if she could write Happy Birthday on it, but it was so hard that she wrote it on a piece of old chocolate and placed that on top of the cake, (I've never seen anything like that before). I took a tiny piece of the chocolate to taste it and it was old as well. I had to go get another cake because when we tried to cut this one, it was so hard that the icing just chipped into chunks. I'm not one to complain, this is actually my 1st yelp ever, that's how bad it was... I will never go to this bakery again, and you shouldn't either! read more

Went here to as I've never been here and based on the google reviews of 4.5 stars I had high expectations. I'm sorry to say, it DID not live up to my expectations. I bought a piece of crumb cake, some rugula, and 2 chocolate iced vanilla cup cakes. The crumb cake was dry as sand and I couldn't even eat it without needing some water. Then the cupcakes were again, dry as a bone and like literal dust. The rugula wasn't dry but lacked flavor and almost felt stale. I'm disappointed to see such bad quality come out of this bakery. I won't be going back, and I hope you approach this place with low expectations. I don't know how it has 4.5 stars but from what I tried, it was awful. Maybe they do have some items that might be good, but after this experience, I won't be going back to find out. Wouldn't recommend. read more

I came here a few times to give back to the town. When I buy cupcakes here, they taste like they were five days ago. It is not moist. They are dry like they put them out for a few days. I like the jelly donuts here though. If you want to try something here, try any of the donuts or rolls. The donuts are fresh, and I have tried a roll here once. It was fresh with butter. Their strawberry shortcake is delicious here during the summer. Other than that, I would proceed with caution due to my experience with the cupcakes. read more

My experience going around Rutherford bakeries ! Today I was finding bakeries with yelp and visit them at their bakeries the first one the worst approach, not welcoming at all! Second one couldn't make a cake for me for Saturday and they are closed Sundays. BUT THIRD ONE I decided to call VARRELMANN'S BAKERY a very traditional Bakery and spoke to lovely Pat over the phone, since I was already disappointed with the other 2 bakeries just said to myself " let me just call around instead of me going to the bakeries" .
