In my previous review, I highly recommended the nachos. They are different every time I go, but they're usually delicious. This time, though, I got the nachos as a take-out item. I opened them up five minutes later to eat them and share with a friend. Instead of real cheese, it was cheese sauce -- the kind you see when you go to a sports game and get nachos in little plastic tubs. I don't remember, honestly, if this was always the case. I really don't think it was -- I'm pretty sure they had real cheese at one point or another, as I find cheese sauce really disgusting. The whole order seemed cheaply made and unfulfilling. Hidden away in the confines of Main St, is this gem - Steer Pub. I was obviously prejudiced about the area so when my friend who just moved here from Rochester suggested we go here, I was like, "Please, you don't know what you're talking about .." Clearly I was in for a surprise. This place really blew me away. Like I've always said in my reviews, the 3 things that sell me on a good restaurant are - Their staff, their accommodability and the food. Staff - 5 stars Accommodability - 5 stars Food - 4 stars. They have a very extensive food menu with a surprisingly large option for vegetarians/vegans (A whole section dedicated). My eyes doubled in size when I saw that and that immediately got my happy chemicals flowing. I got the Falafel wrap and my friend got his Fish and Chips. I must say the fries (or chips in this case) were a little soggy but seemed like they were fresh out of the fryer. Our server, Courtney was impeccable with her service despite handling 3-4 other tables. This place also has an outdoor seating and a rooftop patio which is nice during this time of the year. They have specials every day of the week and if my memory serves me well, Thursdays are $3 Labatt, Fridays are $2.50 Well drinks. If you haven't been here I'd suggest you definitely stick your head in and enjoy a cold pint on a weekend. You'll definitely be as pleasantly surprised as I was. read more

The remodel of this standard from my undergrad days is swanky, yet warm and inviting. The service is friendly (although a bit rushed). The menu now includes many vegetarian and vegan and gluten-free options right along side the burgers and beef and wings and beer. I started with a crock of French onion soup and my dining companion began with spinach artichoke dip. My soup was flavorful and hearty with crusty bread (almost) supporting lots of melted cheese. It was a great beginning to my meal. My companion's dip was deemed delicious and served with a generous helping of toasted pita (or was it focaccia) bread. Next it was on to the burgers. Although I'm usually a fan of all of that healthy, veggie and grain stuff.... I figured that if a place is named "The Steer" it's gotta have great burgers. I was wrong. The burger was large enough and obviously fresh, but it was served on a too large and much too buttered and fried bun. I mean seriously..... there must have been a stick of butter melted into that bun! And the burger.... fresh yes.... flavorful no. Seriously! Bite after bite was bland and boring. Blown away like a tumble weed in the desert! I have been to the steer all my life mainly on the weekends to indulge in some drinking however coming here for lunch made me think. This place isn't half bad. The food was good and my feet didn't stick to the ground since it was a mere 1pm. I had the Memphis burger which was delicious! BBQ, cheddar cheese, and coleslaw all on a huge bun!! Very filling. Also a blue moon which my only complaint would be is if it was colder but that just means drinking it down faster ? Will totally come back for lunch again. This was a mixed bag. I'd been wanting to give The Steer a try for a while. After two failed attempts on busy Fridays we stopped by on a weeknight and sat no problem. The staff was polite but rather brisk and dismissive, spending as little time on us as possible. The atmosphere is conflicting - college dive up front, cozy pub in the back. The menu looked good and I had trouble deciding. I settled on steak tacos. Meh. They were dry and flavorless. The pico de gallo on the side was the only thing with any kick. They're served with double shells which doesn't help. Get something else. I'm going to reserve judgement until I can return for another experience. This was a fairly disappointing outing. read more

I'm a fan of Steer. It's a great place for me and fellow med students to hang out, eat dinner, grab a drink after a grueling day of being pounded with knowledge. The fireplaces are nice and warm. Very cozy. The food comes in rather generous sizes. I've had both the pulled pork sandwich and the burger. I would have to say the burger is one of the better patties I've had in a while. However, the bottom bun was a little soggy when I got it. The chili is great and the pulled pork sandwich is average. The beer selection is pretty good, not extremely extensive, but enough to probably have a decent drink. The waiters are very attentive and very friendly. All in all, its the cozy and friendly atmosphere atmosphere, as well as the solid food that will keep me coming back for more. The place can be a little spendy if you are a student, so expect to splurge a little when you are here. read more

My only visit to the Steer was when I came here right after I turned 21, and back then I didn't really feel the need to come back since it was very much a gross college dive bar. Several years have gone by now and it looks like the owner has made some nice changes since then. It looks clean, is much more open, and there were families with kids eating in the dining room. (Once UB is back in session, I will avoid this place for late nights.) Their new menu caters to vegans and vegetarians now, with more than just one or two options. I went with the Napa Valley burger, with a house-made veggie burger, griddled goat cheese, tomato, and baby basil. It was very good. The fries that came with it were also pretty good - they tasted like potatoes instead of a fryer. My friend had the crabless crab cakes and garbanzo fries. I tasted both and I would definitely come back to order the garbanzo fries with a beer or two. Like a falafel in stick form but not nearly as dense, very good. The draft beer list is decent, but nothing to write home about since most places are jumping on the craft beer bandwagon. Always nice to be able to have the option of local brews on tap - went with the trusty Rusty Chain. read more

Arrived at the bar and set my coat down on an unoccupied chair next to my friends. Before sitting down a gentleman walked over. I asked him if he was sitting there and he proceeded to accost me over taking his seat. I hadn't even sat down yet and nicely asked first if he was sitting there. He told me repeatedly things sitting on the bar is a universal sign a seat is occupied. Sorry pal I thought the phone sitting there was my friends. This negative review goes against the bar because after he proceeded to walk into the kitchen and talk with the guy doing prep. He's either a worker, a cronie, or somebodies butt buddy judging by how he walked through the kitchen like he owned the place. Shit maybe it is the owner? The service was bad and the food was worse. My very first experience at The Steer started off with me retrieving my own menu after I waited for a bit for our Server to return to our table. After about 20 minutes, I once again had to go and find our Server so that we could order because she never came back to the table. I ordered the Ceviche Cubano which I couldn't finish because it was extremely dry and tasteless. It was a tower of pasty, dry seafood plastered upon four, fried plantain pieces. Our Waitress told me that my meal usually came with a balsamic sauce that they had been out of all day, and when she would take back the customer complaints to the Chef, he said to serve it anyway. It was inedible, and had she come to the table to see how we were enjoying our meal, I probably would've ordered something else. She incorrectly placed charges and food items on our bills and we had to use the Square App as their credit machine was down. Needless to say, I now have to make myself dinner. read more

Supposedly this place is owned by the same people who own the Lake Effect Diner, which we love as it is a quality & homemade diner - certainly the best/only of its caliber in Buff. We went in for game 2 of the World Series - they (somewhat reluctantly) turned one of the TVs to the game (apparently hockey took higher precedent...not even Sabres, but ugh, that's Buffalo for you) and they didn't have sound on for the game, which was disappointing, but we made do. Beer was a little pricey with somewhat limited selection (I tend to compare more upscale pubs to MacGregors, which has some of the widest and best selection in Buffalo) - a point of issue more for my BF than for me, since I don't like beer - but unfortunately they're also a Coke establishment, and I'm a Pepsi girl. All that aside, I ordered the Restaurant Week salmon, which came with a delicious ginger/cran chutney, jasmine wild rice pilaf and a great medley of seasonal veggies. And peanut butter pie for dessert, which was incredibly rich but definitely good. It might be the same they serve at Lake Effect. BF got the southern style burger, which he greatly enjoyed (though a la carte sides are always a bit of a let down... A burger ought to come with a side...) and a friend got the fish & chips. Fish batter was maybe a little too browned, not what we expect of fish & chips - but we're biased, having sampled fish & chips all over Ireland & Scotland this summer. The overall feel of the place is far from divey - love the torches outside, and the kind of weird bathrooms. So it was a little pricey, as Buffalo pubs go, but the food was fresh and homemade and yummy. Our friends live close by, and they are regulars, so I'm sure we'll be back eventually. read more

We weren't planning on going out to dinner the Friday of restaurant week because we can't stand waiting for a table. We are old and cranky. But circumstances made it necessary. We were driving by and made a spontaneous decision to go for dinner. The bar area is SO LOUD, but the dining room was not. Pleasant surprise. Don got a steak, it was good, nothing unusual. I ordered the tuna steak which was also good, but the winner on the plate was the rice served with the stir fried vegetables... I have no idea what was in that rice, but I could have eaten a soup bowl of it and been happy, The wait staff was friendly, attentive without being annoying. We asked if we could be out in an hour since we had to be back for a training, and they said food wouldn't take long. I totally understand when food takes a while and I am typically patient, but our food took 45 minutes to come out--a little frustrating since they said it'd be quick. We ended up taking a few bites and then taking the rest to go because it took so long. Otherwise, service was great and the food was also good. I would come back when I'm NOT in a rush. When a friend mentioned to me that The Steer had an extensive vegetarian menu, my initial reaction was somewhere between "WTH?" and "ROTFL!" I was, to say the least, very suspicious. I expected they meant there were some pasta dishes and salads. So I was incredibly surprised to find that the menu on their website actually featured a comprehensive list of well conceived vegetarian entrées - most of which are actually VEGAN. Many can also be made gluten-free. There were even three vegan options for dessert, which is practically unheard of! Eager to try it out, a friend and I headed over there tonight for a birthday dinner - just hoping to try something new. With a couple small exceptions, everything was spot on from the moment we walked in the door. (Minor complaints: the chairs are not the most comfortable and felt wobbly. Light was too low to read menus--but someone else must have commented on that, because a server turned it up shortly after we ordered.) We decided to split the garbanzo bean fries with hemp ranch dipping sauce. They were delicious--hot, crispy and a perfect appetizer for two. My friend ordered the pumpkin falafel wrap and gave that a big thumbs up (even ordered one to-go for her husband). I went with the Marathon Bowl," a bed or perfectly cooked and seasoned kale topped with lentils, grains, dried currants, and tofu--fantastic and super filling. We concluded the meal with vegan whoopie pies and house-made coconut ice cream topped with a caramel date sauce. Sadly, my friend discovered a chunk of plastic in the filling of her pies (otherwise, delicious), but the waitress was quick to apologize and remove the item from the bill. Overall, I'm excited to go back--and to have a new restaurant to suggest when dining with friends of all types of dietary predilections. The Steer is not the fratboy place it used to be a few years ago. In the day, it is a suave restaurant and has a seemingly good American menu. My intrigue, however, was the vegetarian/vegan menu that was added in the past few months. I had meant to go when I first saw it, but .... well, I'll get to that at the end. I had a marathon bowl and it was not that good at all. Some very thin pieces of flavorless tofu on top of equally flavorless lentils/quinoa (and like 5 pine nuts and raisins). This meager helping was on a full bed of full kale. Full, big leaves, that required almost getting a steak knife to cut through The kale was cooked - but it was still pretty tough to get through. Because of the stacking of the dish, you end up having to cut through the forest of kale to be able to eat anything. Lastly, the whole dish was seemingly just covered in miso soup - which both flavored the entire dish with a salty overtone and also seemed to collect any extra dirt or impurities from the kale. Meaning, it got gross kind of fast. (Added note, the dish was served without a spoon, though by the time you get through the kale it becomes a kind of stone soup of a meal). To top it off, the dish is 14 dollars. I was hungry pretty soon after and surprised that a dish that was centered on kale and lentils would leave me unsatisfied. My conclusion, based on the rest of the menu, is that they've gone the route of gourmet vegetarian food, but left out any in-between for someone who would go to the Steer (a hearty meal, steak and potatoes). If I wanted gourmet food, I'd go somewhere else. The whole restaurant seems to want to make itself seem classier, so maybe it's just part of the aesthetic now. With Amy's Place literally a block away, there's no reason to come to the Steer. It's why I hadn't visited earlier - Amy's Place is a much better vegetarian and vegan option, especially if you want to save some money. It is nice that a Buffalo restaurant would think about vegetarians, but my meal just didn't succeed and I'm not sure I'm willing to try it again. read more

If I could leave 0 stars I would. Me and my boyfriend came to Steer because of their vegan options and because Amy's Place happened to be closed. We ordered immediately when we were seated. We ordered the vegan meatball pizza gluten free and the gluten free vegan mushroom carbonara pasta dish. We waited about 45 minutes for our food. When we got it and began eating it, I realized the quinoa meatballs that topped the pizza were covered in MOLD!! No manager even came to apologize. The waitress simply took off that dish, said sorry and went on her way. This is absolutely unacceptable health standards, especially when places should be following strict guidelines. The atmosphere of this restaurant is actually pretty inviting especially with the outdoor seating with torches on the deck. Our waitress was friendly, but unfortunately at times throughout the meal, inattentive. This was confusing to me, as the restaurant was not busy while we were there. My main critique would be the food. 3 of the people in our party ordered a burger, all of them said that they were decent and had few complaints about them, but that they're weren't amazing. Others in the party complained about the lobster mac and cheese and from trying it myself, it was gritty, not incredibly tasty and overall was not very impressive, especially for the expensive price point of $24. Someone else from our party complained that the steak in their steak sandwich was very rubbery and was difficult to eat. I personally ordered the shrimp risotto, which had good elements to it (the vegetables and the shrimp), but the rice was the equivalent of eating mush and as far as I could tell had no cheese in it whatsoever, which I thought was a requirement for labeling something as risotto... Overall, the atmosphere and experience wasn't bad, but the food was definitely sub-par. Apart from the burgers, many of the dishes are overpriced for the quality of the food being served. Great atmosphere when we walked in (we were getting take out) and we were attended to right away. The fireplace in the dining area is a nice touch. We got garbanzo fries and chicken wings. Went after work for some drinks and was good for about two hours. I ask for another drink and the guy tells me I can have a glass of water, but no drink. I ask why and he says that my bill is too big and he can't serve me; not because I appeared drunk, but because my bill was too big. I apologized to the waitress and told her sorry but no tip because your supervisor refused my business. I go to management and they say that because I'm mad I appear drunk, I said I'm mad because I was refused service. Save yourself some time and find another bar. The food was decent if you like burnt toast and biscuit. I ordered the veg eggs Benedict and every time I tried to take a bite with my knife and fork it was like a mission because the bread underneath was rubbery and burnt! How can you give eggs benefit with burnt and rubbery bread and except it to be okay? The reason it gets a 2 is because it was tasty, portions were large, and staff was nice. This place is a college bar through and through at night and a decent eating establishment during the day and early evening. If you're in college or have some weird thing for college girls/guys and are over 25 then I guess this is music to your ears as well during those late evenings! I haven't been here in years but some nights were good, other nights were horrible. It's the way of the college bar. A lot think it is just a college bar though, and I hope you believe the others as well as mine when we say that it has more to offer with good food, service, and prices. I would never in a million years think that a place that is known primarily as a steakhouse would have such an extensive (and delicious) vegan menu. It's really refreshing for me to be able to go somewhere where I can have an awesome burger and not have to worry about my fiance having to try to cobble something together for an acceptable vegan option. I generally stick to burgers while I am here, which are always excellent, and there are some pretty fun options. The Elvis and The Hair Of The Dog in particular are favorites of mine. They are also one of the few places that will do a true medium rare which is much appreciated. The service has always been excellent, the beer selection is great, and the prices are reasonable. Out of the university heights bars it is one of the more "upscale" bars but the others in the area are so bad it is not hard to make this place look good. Great place for drinks at night. Dinner service was meh. We ordered pizzas that had pretty much no toppings on them. I actually counted the pieces of sausage on my sausage and pepper pizza... 6.... there were 6 pieces of sausage on the entire pizza. One slice didn't have a sausage or pepper on it. This made me sad. This is my fav place in Buffalo. First off they have Sam Adams Cherry wheat ale which is become my fav beer (they introduced me to it) and secondly they have the best burgers in Buffalo. Prices are right and atmosphere is cool. Definitely a college hangout (latenight on weekends) but the seperate dining area is great for a date or family dinner. And Buffalo again for the food win. I came down for the weekend, and my parents insisted that I had to try the new vegan dishes at the Steer Restaurant. It was definitely worth it, especially the Garbanzo Fries. All of the dishes we had were 'healthy' vegan, which I didn't expect in the pub setting. So, other than the Garbanzo fries, everything was light and fresh and mostly raw. Definitely good flavors, and you HAVE to try the tofu cheesecake. Seriously good. Next time I come back, I'm going to grab a beer as well! If you are a veg with meat friends, put this restaurant on your list of places to go. read more
