It's a lot of fun to sit right up at the bar and watch the fellow barbecue your burger or grilled chicken sandwich, interact with the other diners sitting at the bar, and chat with the bartender. It really is quite unique. Very quaint. Woody. Comfort feeling. My grilled chicken Patti snake in the grass with spinach was very tasty. It's real meat not like a prepared chicken put together. I don't know what took me so long to coming here, but I definitely will be back! I knocked down one star for the food because they serve it with a bag of chips of which are very salty and really not tasty. If you're going to give chips on the side, make it at least decent chips. Also, I felt the $12 for a glass of house of wine was a little pricey. Oh and I should add that this is a very bare-bones establishment. There's no napkins. The epitome of why Buffalo is called city of good neighbors. We had so much fun sitting at the bar and loved Patrick/Sponge who was behind the bar serving drinks and on the grill. He made the day! It's a tavern. Youre getting paper towels as napkins and tight seating. And you'll love it. We split the french onion and the fish fry. Im not usually one for fish fry sides. Totally average fish fry with interestingly seasoned coleslaw, Mac salad and potato salad. Breading was crispy but dark and almost burned, leaving the fish flavorless. My suggestion is to call ahead for pick up as seating is as claustrophobic as the parking lot. It took me almost an hour from seating and beverages to having food in front of me. Also, set up a group text with your party as it's too loud to hear a person next to you talk. TLDR food was passable ambiance is what you'd expect from a neighborhood bar with a small kitchen. What a fun place to hang out drink, eat, play darts and trivia. We called ahead for trivia and they saved us a table- there are so many tables inside and out- if you want a specific seat (like by the dart board -call ahead) Trivia was fun- great prizes. I had the pickle chips- they were greasy and salty. The loaded Mac and cheese was ok. For my entree I had the grilled chicken wings-so good! My husband had the fried chicken wings- they were over cooked and dry. We also had the fried shrimp and Okra- it was delicious. Our service was very good- the three work as a team. Not 5 star in the sense of a fancy place but everything was great so I'm giving 5. Service was quick and we were checked on frequently. Drinks and my soup came out within just a couple minutes after ordering. Seems like a place that likely has a lot of neighborhood regulars. The clam chowder was delicious and hearty. The oysters were each a good size. I had the casino haddock which was one of tonight's specials. It was a large piece of fish with a good amount of topping. The broccoli was tender but not over cooked and had a light garlic butter. Had a few of my wife's fries. They were also good, maybe a little salty for some but I liked them. read more

This has been on my list of places to try and decided to make the journey. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't what I expected and we left without eating. Upon entering, the bar area was lively and crowded. Surely they were enjoying themselves! But on the table service side ... it was dark, cold, and empty feeling. We stood there for a couple of minutes waiting to be seated. When no one came, we sat ourselves and waited. Eventually a woman came over, but we were handled a smaller, limited menu than we saw online. She said only the grilled foods were being served. I asked when do they have the full menu? She replied before 2pm and Fridays. This isn't on the website at all that I saw. I thoroughly checked again when I got home and saw nothing regarding a limited menu during certain hours or days. It would be assumed the full menu would always be available at dinner, especially on a Thursday. I guess not. I made the decision to leave without ordering as I was looking for a different type of meal and experience. So I am not judging how the food tastes or portions, just my brief and underwhelming experience. Maybe I'll come back on a Friday and get a different experience or be able to speak to the food itself but first impression was a bummer. There is a private parking lot at least. read more

Just got back from Brunners and what a disappointment it was. How this place is a highly rated is beyond me. Fairly busy and Exceptionally loud. Started with the chowder, it had a strange taste but a lot of green herb, very over powering ( barf). We both had fish dinners, one baked and one battered. Both very overcooked! Fries and macaroni salad both over salted and how do you mess up a green salad, not sure but they did. We took a couple of bites and left both dinners. When it was time to pay the bill, we had another server who came over and was confrontational and told us she had been there for over twenty five years and nobody ever complains about there food. Came here today with four other friends. We had chicken wings, steak sandwiches and a sausage special. They have many draft beers to choose from. The food was really mediocre compared to other bars and wasn't as good as my last visit. The wings were small and overcooked. The steak sandwiches were huge but lacked flavor. I'm on a mission to find the "best fish fry" in Buffalo, and this restaurant came highly recommended. We arrived at 6:30 pm on a Friday, during the height of the fish fry season. It was packed. The tavern is small with maybe about 10 tables and a huge bar, so we had quite the wait ahead of us. The hostesses and servers were very friendly and talked with us whole we waited, in between clearing tables. I really appreciated that even tho the place was slammed, they still took time to greet everyone coming in and making you feel welcome. Once we sat, of course, we ordered the fish fry. The selling point on this one was the homemade sides and soup. I had the New England clam chowder to start, which was delicious. Chunks of clam and a very hearty mix of potatoes and carrots with a creamy base. The fish fry arrived, it definitely lived up to the hype. Nice and crispy. Massive in size and not greasy at all. The homemade potato salad and coleslaw had me wanting more. This delicious fish also came with homemade tartar sauce. Highly recommend. The atmosphere was great. You could tell this place is a neighborhood staple, everyone seemed to know each other. I will definitely be coming back to work my way through the menu. Bartenders serve food without wearing any gloves on their hands. They touch beer bottles they touch money they touch everything and your food! So Friday we went to our regular place Athena's , but they were closed for staff vacation , so I've been wanting to try Brunner's out for bit ,, showed up around 7:30 on a Friday , walked in loved whole vibe of place , cook behind bar making burgers etc on grill , seated promptly went with beer battered fish fry and it was amazing , usually don't do beer battered cuz many places dot let oil get hot enough and makes batter soak up all grease ,but this was perfect , coke slaw and Mac salad also ( usually don't eat all Mac and slaw ) but this time I did ,, definitely will come back for second meal read more

My first time here did not disappoint! Arrived here after work with my partner and the pub was already well occupied. The busy bartender greeted us and advised where we could sit in the dining area. A few minutes later he brought us menus and took our drink order. I began to notice that despite not being full, the pub was very loud! The bartender brought our drinks in a timely manner and took our order. Although their burgers and grilled sandwiches sounded amazing, I had the western burger, partner had the cajun burger, and we shared an order of fries. The fries came out first and were double fried...whoah!! They were super CRISPY and perfectly salted! Then the large burgers (at least 8 oz's) arrived a short time later! They we very tasty, cooked as requested and well dressed! Excellent! They came with a bag of chips and mac salad, which was NOT the typical sloppy, runny, second-thought found at most places...very good! As we ate, the bar became more busy and hence, louder. Trying to order takeout is horrible. Whoever answered, asked me to hold and never came back is ridiculous. I sat there and listened to her greet customers, taking orders, seating people and delivering pick up orders while I sat on the phone screaming hello. I tried calling earlier and the line was continuously busy. Imagine the amount of business is lost due to this person who just leaves the phone off the hook I was happy to finally get through to someone only to be abruptly told to hold and forgotten about. In the old days, nobody would ever pay for their food. Hence the name was "Done-a-runners." What to get: Burger. I wasn't sure if I should give it a 4 or a 5, then I saw the stinging review about it not being clean... it must have changed since that review was posted because it's pretty clean now and they are certainly being hygienic when making food, so that review is really invalid. Most of the bars in Buffalo seem less hygienic than this one. The main runners on the Olympic team sometimes get injured. When that happens, you have to call on the B-Runners. I was sent here by a Yelp friend. I was actually going to try Average Joe's, but they really annoyed me and wouldn't serve me, so I went to my second choice, and was really glad I did. It's cheaper than some of the "big burgers" in town (Vizzi's, Ruzzine's, Average Joe's), but it's also a little smaller. If I owned this place, I guess I would rename it "Punners". It was very tasty. It was juicy, it was well seasoned. I didn't really like the bun but everything else on the burger was good. It was just big enough to satisfy me without making me totally stuffed. I got it with Pepperjack cheese and that was really good too. In the old days, only people that fake tanned would go here. Hence the previous name, Sunners. Also the service was really nice here. The guy was super super friendly, one of the friendliest guys-in-bars I've seen in a long time. So yay for Midwestern-quality customer service. It has been many years since I've been here however in previous years I would come here with my parents often for the Friday Fish Fry so after Mom recently saw an article in the Buffalo News she said "let's go." Brunner's hasn't move and it's the same small bar on Main just off Eggert. Actually Avenger's vet is just on the corner. The parking lot is pretty small and the handicap space was full so I dropped my mother and her cousin Debbie off on the sidewalk but luckily found parking once I pulled back. I'm not sure where you go to get seated, there is a half wall walking which would appear to be a host station but since they were seated before I got in I went right over to the table. While sitting I saw many people go to the opening in the wall between the bar area and dining room and the one waitress sat them from there. My mother never eats that much however she and Deb both ordered the fish fry however one got mac salad while the other got potato. I ordered a Ruben knowing she will give me her left overs and I didn't want too much fish lying around. I upgraded to fries with my sandwich however I started with chili "Cincinnati style" a/k/a shredded cheese and onions (who knew). One thing I will say is the food is not as good as I remember, which I know memories can be distorted every time they are recalled by the brain, or is it that since eating here we have ventured to many, many, many restaurants the serve fish fries and possibly found much better options. It was a typical beer batter but also nothing special about. The fries are CRINKLE CUT (what!??!) and so not worth. Both my mother and I found the coleslaw to be good but the mac salad again was nothing special. Special Note - we are not mayo lovers, yes we like Miracle Whip (don't curse us) but the mac salad was just boring. My Ruben was good enough as well, it was pastrami but neither here nor there, it had a good amount of sauerkraut which was great however by the end of the meal, for 3 people a bill of $60 was a bit much, especially since only one cocktail has been ordered. Brunners is good overall. It's mostly a locals joint. Cash only. Environment is loud and annoying at times. The bar area is undersized. Service is hit or miss. Unless you're a regular going for some brewskis, you're going to Brunners for the food which is pretty good. read more
