I remembered it being one of my favorite French onion soup spots so even on a hot summer day I got it and was exactly how I remembered. We got a giant pretzel to share and it truly was gigantic. Stopped in here our first night in Buffalo and we were thrilled. This is a great, slightly dive-y but in a good way, neighborhood bar and restaurant. We decided to start with an order of the classic Buffalo wings and the giant pretzel. The wings were amazing and the pretzel was the single largest soft pretzel I have ever seen. We probably should have stopped there, but we underestimated the pretzel and hot entrees too. The stack burger was classic, juicy and loaded and the seasonal corned beef and cabbage dinner was delicious. The service was great and the beer was cold and crisp. It's a cool place but small! The wait is long for a table so we sat in the bar area that is first come first served and you have to share the table with other people but it worked out fine. There is also no servers so you have to go to the bar to order drinks and food. There was a lot of people there for the hockey game so it was busy and loud so be prepared for that. The flavor of the PBJ burger was absolutely what you'd expect, sweet and savory and satiating. The fries were a little than shoestring, and fried to perfection. My friends all ordered wings of various flavors and they were a good size and fried the way a Buffalo chicken wing should be. The waitress was very attentive and funny. Their food is great I love the atmosphere, good beer selection you name it. Today ended all of it. I ordered my usual pb and j burger and it was great as ever. My fiancé ordered the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. I know what a Nashville hot chicken sandwich is. She knows what a Nashville hot chicken sandwich is. It's hot but it isn't fire on a bun. Their verison of the sandwich is fire on a bun. She tried it and it was inedible so I tried it and it was too hot for me and I like spice. I contacted the waitress and asked for something else because it was inedible and they provided us with another meal no issues. Unfortunately they intended for us to still pay for the Nashville sandwich because "we ordered it" and "there's nothing wrong with it." I now proceed to argue with the waitress that the sandwich is not edible at this spice level and she says don't you know what a Nashville chicken sandwich is? Don't patronize me. I've been to Nashville plenty of times and we order them all over this city and many others and none have ever been this spicy. I ask to speak go a manager. A large guy gets up from the bar and this is the part that upset me. Gets in my face hovering over me and we'll within my personal space and says what's the problem. I explain about the sandwich and he says the same don't you know what it is it's supposed to be hot. I again explain hot is hot fire is fire. It's not edible. To his credit he comped the sandwich but I received no further communication from the manager and the waitress apologized explaining that people are responsible for what they order and we don't usually do this. Now I've been to a lot of places and I can tell you with a certainty I have never ever had somebody argue with me and treat customers this way. That alone is one thing, to have the manager stand over me attempting to intimidate me and get in my face and personal space is beyond anything I have ever experienced. I will never ever ever return to this place. Not for free not if that guy is fired, NEVER. Worst customer service experience of my life and I'll make sure to let everybody I know aware of what happened. In the service business the customer is the priority. Exploring places this week that are new to us. Settled on Forty Thieves for today. City parking is always an adventure around lunchtime downtown. Very cool vibe to this place. Patio seating available right on Elmwood for people watching. We chose indoors where the dining area is up in a loft like second level. Clean and simple. The service was very good. Wife got the French Onion soup, which she said was very good. We went with Handhelds, Steak Hoagie and Tenderloin Sandwich. Both were fantastic, and they were both huge. I chose salad for my side instead of fries. Salad was big, it could have been lunch on its own! Super fresh produce too. Saw another table's wings and fingers and they looked incredible as well. If the parking situation wasn't so difficult, we'd be looking at a perfect score here. Presentation: 5 / 5 Perfection. Separate aluminum trays for each flavor, wings separated by flats and drums, plated with home-made bleu cheese and porcelain (no paper, no plastic) plates. "As good as Barbill". Meat: 4 / 5 Good meat distribution and consistency but not the plumpest wings, a couple scrawnies. Cook: 9 / 10 The wait time on these wings was perfect. Not too fast to suspect they've been pre-cooked and not too slow that Tim Sauda has enough time to order too many Old Fashioneds. These were one of the best cooks yet. Saucy without being wet and crispy without being dry. Standard: 13 / 15 Just an outstanding flavor and the application of sauce was ideal. One Wing King thought the sauce may have been a tad too salty, which is a common sentiment at many establishments. When you're a Wing King, you learn to keep a gallon of water next to your bed on wing nights. Specialty: 9 / 10 Wow, a VERY strong showing in the specialty category. While the pit BBQ were not our favorite, Hot garlic parm, Southie gold and Forty Sauce were all comparably awesome. Overall: 44.5 / 50 Just an amazingly balanced scorecard. The menu is pretty heavy on sandwiches without much in the way of creative selections. I thought I could play it safe by ordering a Cobb salad. Not sure what they brought me, but it wasn't a Cobb salad. No grilled chicken, no sliced avocado, no blue cheese crumbles or blue cheese dressing. It did hav3 some pre-shredded cheddar cheese, an excessive quantity of red onion, and a pile of stale croutons. Just don't put this item on the menu if you don't know how to make it. One of the great losses of COVID was that Sin City Farm Girl moved to live on another farm, this time just outside of Buffalo, NY, and did this during lockdown so I couldn't even go help her move, cry, tie myself to the moving truck or anything. Her hubster took a job up there. Sigh. So, this summer, with the NMA and I fully vaxxed, we road tripped up to their new place, which is gorgeous. All of upstate New York is gorgeous in the summer, it's lush and green and vibrant, as if in defiance of the cold and snow that suppresses them every winter. SCFG and I are master thrifters, and so OF COURSE we went hunting, and of course we need refreshments. One of these was Forty Thieves, which has a nice open space, decently ventilated, because COVID is definitely still a thing. We arrive and are seated pretty promptly. Both of us are hungry so we order an appetizer of a "Bavarian Pretzel", then salads. Understand that the pretzel is a meal. It's Jabba the Hutt sized. Knife and Fork sized. Huge. Also quite good, with a crisp edge and warm wonderful chewy doughy center. Likewise the salads are massive, great big piles of fresh greens and tidbits and lovely dressing that accents but does not smother the greens. We thoroughly enjoyed our food, service was good, and the price was reasonable. I expect next time we road trip up there this will be on the dining itinerary, though we will be ordering only ONE pretzel and ONE salad to split, I think. read more

The food took an excessively long time to come out. The place overall was too loud. It's one thing to not be able to hear someone across the table, but I couldn't hear the people next to me. The waitress never brought us napkins after the food came out and we needed to get some downstairs from the bar on our own. While I've been here for drinks this was my first time enjoying the food here. It was the perfect way to end a fall evening and we enjoyed some yummy comfort food. The menu had a lot of variety in burgers, sandwiches, snacks, beer and a full bar. We noticed that the snacks being brought out for other tables were hearty portions, perfect for a meal or to share with friends. We did witness possibly the largest hot pretzel we had ever seen in our lives. We bookmarked it and will try it another day. The burger had so much flavor and the onions were cooked well so the flavor wasn't overpowering. The broiled cheese on top the bun was a perfect touch. The salad had a yummy home made Greek goddess dressing which was a nice touch and something a little different that I enjoyed. The inside of the restaurant really isn't as big as you'd think. Service was friendly but not fast. I don't think there was a cocktail menu, but the drinks we had were really good. The foooood!!! Burger was fantastic and the wings were amazing! I was very surprised by the wings. We ordered ten. You aren't able to get half and half (like 5 of one flavor and 5 of another) but you are able to combine flavors. Our server recommended Southie Gold and Cajun mixed together. So good!! Went for a sit-down brunch today. Food was tasty, and service was fantastic. Honestly though, the food, while good, made me miss Blue Monk. The room decorations are really cool, covered in old photos throughout Buffalo's history, but the place is wallpapered with televisions- and they are all on! The entire menu was bar food, and while it was tasty, it was not food that stirred the soul. Filled the belly well, and the food tasted good... but it was not an inspiring meal. Blue Monk was filled with unique and interesting food. While they only had one of four salads listed on their menu available at 1145am, at least the men offered a $15 plate of Totino's Pizza Rolls... for real. I would eat there in the future, but I wouldn't be setting it as a priority destination. read more

We just ate at Forty Thieves tonight- May 14th, 2025. The restaurant was not busy and it took 1 1/2 hours to get our food. A table near us who sat down after us got their food first. We ordered burgers and grilled chicken. Our server went MIA for at least 30 minutes until I went to the bar to find her and tell her we were leaving. She asked if we would wait while she checked the kitchen. Our food then came out lukewarm. Our fries and soup were terrible. We told our waitress and she did nothing - not even apologize. Unfortunately, we will not be able to review the actual restaurant itself or the food because when we came in with a 12 pound service dog completely vested on a leash and asked to sit on the patio we were rudely abruptly told we could not have the dog in the restaurant anywhere, and by law, you should be able to have your dog And we did not wanna cause a scene so we turned around and walked out, but someday they're going to encounter someone with a service animal and do what they did to us and they will have a handful of problems!!! The restaurant should be very much aware of the laws regarding service animals. He also has his identification card totally certified. This was totally uncalled for and especially his attitude talking to us the way they did we're seniors and showed no respect. read more
