"South Buffalo" style wings
Phil W.

Once again the blackthorn did not disappoint, the south Buffalo souvlaki was the choice for lunch today, a heaping bowl of salad with some grilled chicken (which was on the very well done side) and a piece of grilled pita bread. The salad itself was fresh and and filling, but the pita, I definitely know to ask for them the skip the grilling next time , it was a bit burnt and had some off flavor to it, but luckily some of it was edible. Overall though, a great lunch and I'm looking forward to stopping out again .

Blackthorn was a great experience I wouldn't mind having again. Upon arriving, you will find a parking lot to the right of the building. There's also street parking if necessary. Walking in, there is a bar to the left that has 2 nice TVs on either side (there may be one in the middle but I cannot recall). On the right is a warm fireplace. You can be greeted by the stairs in front of you and seated. There is an upstairs for banquets only, and an outdoor beer garden. Our waitress was friendly and efficient (albeit, it was a slow day). The bread was good with three different options, as well as 2 different butters (regular and garlic). My friend enjoyed his meatloaf although he took the bacon off as it wasn't crispy. His mashed potatoes were incredibly overloaded with garlic to the point it was inedible (he even had me try it and I had the tiniest little scoop and yes it was overwhelming. We both agreed it was likely an accidental overpour. My meal was perfection! The vegetables with yummy, the sweet potato is definitely my recommendation for a potato choice and I would get it again, and the chicken and sauce combo was heavenly; more importantly, even with the sauce, the chicken coating remained perfectly crisp and crunchy! I could not have asked for better! Forgot to mention: the New England clam chowder was out of this world! Had a unique taste that I really appreciated.

Irish Beer cheddar

Wanted to try as many bars as we could for wings and any traditional food in Buffalo. Here's what we ordered: - Irish Beer Cheddar: cheddar cheese, loads of potatoes and the hint of Irish beer. This was a bit salty for my liking. - Stuffed Banana Peppers: fresh herbs, and four cheeses served over garlic toast. The peppers were great, but the toast was cold and hard. - wings: south Buffallo style served with bleu cheese celery and carrots. These were alright The service was good, food came out quickly and everyone was friendly. The dining area was clean and cozy.

Wish I could do half stars id definitely give them 3.5 stars. Very spacious and the service was very good. For me the food was just okay. Not bad and not great. Would I go back if someone asked me too, I would. We started with the stuffed hot peppers. They were filled nice with mixes of cheese. For me I'm not a fan of a very hard pepper and they definitely were not hot. The bread they came on top of though was very good. My friend ordered the Pup "Kevs favorite" with a side of their in house made jalapeno tots. For me the tots were the highlight of our meal. They were nice size tots, (which is why im sure you only get 4) they were crunchy on the outside and nice fluffy on the inside and it gave jalepeno heat. My friend said the sandwhich was good. I ordered the chicken pesto sandwich. It was good. The chicken was overcooked. But the flavor was good, and it said it came with goat cheese, which I love and they did not skimp there. I got the sweet potatoes fries for my side, under whelming, actually gave me frozen out the bag vibes. Great service goes a long way when the food is just average, and they definitely provided great service.

Filet with garlic mashed potatoes and veggies

I had the steak with a cup of french onion soup. The steak was cooked perfectly with the garlic mashed potatoes having a fantastic garlic flavor. I got gravy on the side as I wasn't sure how it would taste. But it was delicious. The gravy had great flavor not the powered mix taste. I would 100% go back

Went to blackthorn with a couple of friends after work, the service was okay, our waitress wasn't the friendliest but maybe it was just a bad day for her. The food was alright but very expensive. I had the crab cake app and an order of the south buffalo wings. The crab cakes were pretty good but a little bit salty. The wings were pretty good though, nice heat to them. Overall not a bad spot to go to for a happy hour or just some late night eats.

A-OK We came here a few times and enjoyed the visits. The service was hit or miss to be honest. The first visit we had an excellent server that was very friendly and the second and third time, not so much. It was busier the last two times and the server was rushing around, but most definitely felt like they were that way regardless of the busy level in the place. Food is pretty solid as long as you stick to the more standard bar food options. I wouldn't recommend the food for much outside of that - it's a no for me on the pasta options. The place is cute and has a flight of stairs you'll need to go up if you are seated at a table and not the bar - so be ready for that is you come with someone that may struggle on stairs. Overall: B A-OK Nothing to write home about, but a solid adventure if you're in the area.

Irish Dinner

St Patty's Day dinner. Irish music. Good service. I had corned beef and cabbage with carrots and potatoes. It was delicious. My friend had a burger, he was still talking about how good it was a week later!

Burnt on the outside

We walked in, there were only 2 other tables yet somehow it took forever to get our food. When the food came is was rather disappointing. We've eaten here before and had a better experience but after today I'm not sure we'll bother coming back. My daughter had a medium-rare burger that was basically burnt on the outside. She ate some of it because she was starving and we had already waited a very ling time. My rueben was dry and missing the extra side of 1000 I ordered. My son got fried when ordering chips. Overall not impressed.

California chicken pizza

The service was great, the waiter was attentive & very nice! The food was good too I got a basket of fries and two beers a labatt blue light, & Sam Adams cherry wheat sip sip! My family said the California chicken pizza was delicious and the Cajun turkey they sure enjoyed it!!. The chicken wings! Definitely were yummy! & most definitely spicy oh yeah! I'm glad we came out to enjoy a late dinner. The ambiance average. Not too loud..

French Onion Soup

Best roast beef and corned beef, hands down. If you're looking for fresh carved beef, don't waste your time anywhere else!! Also the homemade tots were so delicious. They tasted more like a jalapeño popper in a good way and are so worth it. French onion soup Beer cheese soup Triple D platter Corned beef sandwich/Reuben Everything was 5/5, service was excellent (shout out Lauren) and the place itself was really welcoming and cozy. Would definitely return

If you need your order fast or you are hungry this is not the place to go. The service is very slow and we only saw our waitress three times. I love the layout, astetic, and cozy feel of the bar. It can get very loud, which can be difficult for a date or family get together. The food was absolutely amazing, I just wish the experience matched.

St. Patrick's Day Eve seems like the perfect occasion to celebrate one of Buffalo's Irishiest pubs, located in the area's most Irishy neighborhood of South Buffalo - Blackthorn Restaurant and Pub. Location: 5.5 / 5 That is not a typo; we awarded Blackthorn our first ever BONUS half point. Great atmosphere, check, friendly service, check, great beer and drink menu, check. But Blackthorn showed us that a restaurant can serve wings AND be clean. Prior to this visit we would have defined "clean" as only smelling a *little* like urine. Presentation: 4 / 5 Nothing special in the way these wings were delivered -- a couple "piles" of wings. I'm also told, by those who need blue cheese to complement the flavor of the chicken wing, that the bleu cheese was a little watery. Meat: 5 / 5 Not one imperfection in these wings. Perfect size, shape and skin -- like Ryan Reynolds. Cook: 8.5 / 10 Overall a really nice job here. Hot and crispy without being too dry. A couple of the South Buffalo style were a bit too wet and saucy (again, like Ryan Reynolds) Standard Medium: 14 / 15 There is an unwritten rule among the group that we cannot give a perfect score in this category but Blackthorn made it difficult for us. These were just fantastic. Tangy and buttery with the perfect amount of heat. Specialty: 8.5 / 10 The South Buffalo style is also killer-- a surprising and strikingly different flavor from the standard medium. The Wing Kings generally prefer a few more flavor options, which prevented a higher score here. A nice BBQ break would have been welcome. Overall: 45.5 / 50 Blackthorn is sneaky good. We had high expectations but didn't expect them to jump to the top of our rankings. Not only have they punched their ticket to the playoffs, Blackthorn may be a 1-seed.

I've been on somewhat of my own personal wing tour lately and I'm glad we tried Adolf's. We came on a Monday, which is their wing special night, 75 cent wings. We arrived a little before the 5:00 PM rush so we sat right at the bar, ordered and behold, the wings were in front of us in about 5 minutes! Service was very fast and friendly. We ordered hot, and the level of heat was exactly what hot is supposed to be. Saucy, but not swimming in excessive sauce. The wings were crispy outside and juicy inside, that elusive perfectly fried wing. We opted for the homemade blue cheese, and while I liked it, I found it didn't have a strong blue cheese flavor. But they do have two choices of blue cheese type. Carrots and celery were included, not always the case with wing night specials. I would call these elite level, top 10 in Buffalo wings, maybe even top 5. The only reason that I did not score 5 stars was that there we 7 drums and 3 flats - and I am a flat guy. This usually works out well because my wife likes the drums, but this time they definitely skewed in my wife's favor. If it were not the wing special night, I might have said something, but the wings were so good I did not want to register a complaint about the lack of flats. We also ordered the hand cut fries which were hot and excellent. We definitely plan to return.

He was a really nice guy and told me what his best menu items were. I had heard good things about the steak sandwich and hadn't had one in a while. I opted to get that with some fries. The fries were the best fries I've had. They taste like the ones from McDonald's only better because they aren't doused in salt. The sandwich was perfect. The steak was cooked exactly like it should be and the flavor was incredible. The peppers and onions on top added even more flavor but didn't overpower it. I don't think I've eaten anything faster in recent memory. No take out boxes needed here. The meal is too good not to eat right then. The bar also had a great vibe to it. I'm a big fan of old school style bars and establishments like this. The traditional architecture and nostalgic feeling is perfect here. It's not modernized like every other new bar built in the last decade. It's got character, a great menu, and excellent service. I will definitely be back for more lunch specials and enjoy this spot downtown.
