Came on a Tuesday for trivia. Staff was nice but they were out of majority of the draft beers, and a good amount of the cans too. The food selection was very small, basically a handful of fried items (wings, mozzarella sticks, nachos, etc. sorry forgot to take a photo), definitely not the same menu Google says they have, or what's posted on Yelp photos). Upon walking in, was overcome by the smell of stale, funky beer like the place was wiped down with dirty mop water. The draft beer tasted like the lines hadn't been cleaned. Tucked into Hertel but away from the main strip, the Public House is a terrific pub to frequent. I had a banana sour that was divine and the fried green tomatoes were tasty too. Only 4 slices in the appetizer order though. The honey wings were heavy on the honey. Stopped in here on a Friday night around 8pm. It is a cute place. We all ordered the pizza logs. You get 4 homemade logs. The presentation was great with each log cut into two and placed around the marinara sauce. The service was good as well. There is only one bathroom. read more

Came here for a few trivia nights. Cute little spot, with a very large selection of beers/drinks. I'd steer clear of the food though. I ordered a French Dip sandwich, and one half of it was legitimately pure fat. The other looked decent but at that point I couldn't eat it. Upon inspection though, there was a piece of baked fish in it? What the heck? The server was very nice and took it off the bill which I didn't even ask. I have a new Tay Tay in my life after a recent visit to The Public House. As I continue to find the best Guinness Draft/stout, in Western New York, I decided upon visiting the Hertel Avenue locale. Served almost immediately after sitting at the bar I was feeling good about the place right off the bat. And then I saw that the pour was not the recommended 119.5 seconds. It was more like 20 seconds! But alas, not a huge deal breaker. And then the bartender asked how my day had been. Someone with a personality - how about that. She introduced herself - Taylor - and asked me how my day had been. I smiled and said "long." I then told her it was first time visiting there and she welcomed me to the bar. She and I made a bit of small talk and found her very friendly. Actually it seemed that friendly folk frequented the bar. A couple of barstool lacrosse fans struck up a conversation with me. as well It was early for a Friday night in Buffalo. The crowd was a mix of people - 30 to 45ish years of age. I found the crowd was laid back and friendly. And Taylor - my new fave Tay Tay, promptly asked if I wanted another glass of the Black Gold. Who was I to refuse a request of a pretty & friendly barkeep? And when I finally finished my second glass, I decided to call it a night. The damage to my wallet? - A mere $6 per glass. A very fair price for a couple of Guinness. I hope to go there soon as the price was right and the service was impeccible. They have a great selection of other brews and have an appealing food menu. Stopped in after work for drinks and food and sat at the bar. Was surprised how much space we were able to get for it being a Thursday... It was quiet. This worked out great because the bartender was able to answer our questions on the different beers and was offering us drinks right away when ours started getting low. I had two Utica Clubs (the first because I never heard of it before and the second because it made me feel super holding that hip can). I also tried their chicken fingers. I normally don't order fingers for dinner but I couldn't pass these up because the description made them sound delicious... "Buttermilk marinated, panko breaded, served with pesto aioli & blue cheese". They were in fact delicious. I'm normally a blue cheese person but that pesto aioli was irresistible. With three locations throughout Western New York, there's no excuse as to why you haven't checked out The Public House. The bar on Hertel is my favorite place to spend a Saturday afternoon. They have an extensive beer list of bottles and drafts and the bartenders and servers are some of the nicest people on Hertel. The owner, Frank, is also very down to earth and super friendly! For an app, I highly recommend the pretzels - the mustard on the side is delicious. If you're interested in an entree as well, I opted for the Turkey Club and it's safe to say that I was NOT disappointed. Stopped in on a Saturday night around 7 and was able to get great bar seats to watch March madness. Had heard good things about the place and the bartender, Jackie, was great. Huge beer list and we ordered the turkey Rueben and a burger. The food came out before we finished our first beer. The turkey was legit and fresh - definitely not just from a supermarket. The burger was juicy and had fresh veggies on it. The other highlight was the amazing fries - crispy and not frozen. It's a really relaxing place and parking wasn't bad at all. Figured it would be super busy but was happily surprised to have great seats, cool music, fun bartender, and yummy food. Definitely will be back!!! read more

Untrue item description as the chicken fingers were Not panko encrusted nor were the french fries freshly cut as you can see in the picture. The actual food brought out does not justify $15. The chicken fingers were the kind you get at a pizzeria as were the french fries. Also, the chicken fingers were very small as seen in picture and the grease was not shook off the chicken fingers before they were sauced up as you can see the chicken fingers laying in the grease. The worst part of the chicken fingers though were they were under cooked a little as the chicken was hard and not soft. While this bar is certainly easy to get to, generally quiet, and cheap...I think it is generally quiet and cheap for a reason due to the fact that I am never overly impressed with the staff. My friends and I were the only patrons on a Saturday evening and the bartender kept making passive-aggressive comments about us leaving. He was also particularly rude to a few of my girlfriends who were attempting to be chatty and point out the fact that he was acting a little salty. He also closed the kitchen up early, which was disappointing since we were all looking for something to munch on! On a positive note, there are lots of beers to choose from, it is a very comfortable atmosphere with a large L-shaped bar to sit at with lots of tables, too. And nothing that is going to make your wallet explode. Good, not great. read more

French fries. That's what you should know. I met a friend for an early dinner on a Monday, just after they open for the evening. The place was quiet for the hour and a half, two hours I was there. Awkward first entry into the place because there were a couple regulars and the bartender. Apparently I mumble too much, so just don't mumble...pick a table and sit. I ordered a turkey Reuben- could have used a bit more sauce but the bread is thick, like Texas toast and toasted perfectly. Fries are made of potatoes and these are hand cut and taste just like they should...like potatoes. My only complaint is that my friend and I were the only ones eating in the restaurant (just a wrap and a sandwich) and food took upwards of 30 minutes to come out. The fish fry here is amazing! The fish was not greasy and was very well cooked. The fries seem handcut and are well seasoned. The mac salad was unique, it had some spice and was some of the best I've had. I had a speciality cocktail- one with tequila though I can't remember the name. It was smooth and strong. LOUD! This a small restaurant/bar. When we arrived, there was a very full table of 12-14 people out having a good time. In that small area along with the terrible acoustics made it very difficult for us the hear each other(6 in our party). I ordered the mac and cheese special. It was hot and tasty, but not at all sure it was the dish on the menu. I am pretty sure the Special was supposed to have ham and bacon in it. My dish had a few chicken chunks in it. It had a nice flavor, even if not what was advertised. The major disappointment was the lack of attention by our waitress. I ordered hot tea with lemon. My first mug was exactly the right temperature. I asked for more hot water. The mug was filled with barely warm water. I could not get the waitress' attention. This is literally my first Yelp review. I never use the app for this so please know this shows how bad the place is. Do not buy the food here. The wings are a complete joke. Rubbery and overall terribly cooked. Asked for extra crispy and got the complete opposite. On top of that, we ordered medium wings and there was zero sauce on it. Visited for lunch on a Saturday afternoon with my wife and 1 year old. It wasn't too busy but there was only one low table available that fit a high chair. This table was right next to the back door and it was very very cold. Turns out the table next to us was available but one of the workers stored his jacket there making it look like it wasn't available. We ordered two wedge salads. This place is great! It's still pretty new, but they seem to have things under control. The drink options are listed on the wall far and wide with a huge variety of beers, a few wines, and mixed drinks. I went there with a bunch of friends and we had a light lunch and tried a few beers on tap. The bartender was very knowledgable and happy to let us taste some brews before settling on one. The food was fantastic, I had pan-seared scallops in a lemon butter sauce and my other girlfriends had sandwiches which they all loved. One of them is even trying to cut back on bread, so they grilled up her turkey sandwich straight up with no bread and she absolutely loved it! She was also pretty pleased because they have high chairs available, and while I wouldn't call it a family friendly restaurant, it will be a nice pub for her and her husband to bring their one year old with them for a nice afternoon bite to eat. I'm so happy this place opened up, it's going to be a big hit in the Hertel Ave area! I'm thrilled to have it so close to my house! read more

I visited The Public House less than a week after it opened with my aunt, cousin, and her husband. They opened on a Thursday, we dined the following Tuesday. We originally wanted to go to Resurgence but noticing the brewery is only open Wednesday-Sunday, I remembered reading a couple new Public House reviews on Yelp in addition to the Buffalo Rising article and suggested we check it out. Walking in, I really didn't know what to expect. There is weathered wood and awesome Buffalo-themed pictures on the wall which I really enjoyed. A pub feeling with a restaurant vibe, at least when we visited. Tables are off to the left while the bar area is straight ahead. Tables are covered with brown butcher paper... I almost wish I had some crayons to color with! Now, onto the important stuff... service & food. We thought the service was lacking. It's not just because the were only open for a couple of days. It's because they have only been open for a couple of days and should be happy, welcoming, and friendly. Maybe there aren't too many employees yet and there's a lot of running around but it didn't seem that way and ultimately I would have liked our waitress to be more approachable and friendly. I wanted to ask more questions but the opportunity to do so wasn't there. The 80+ beers. Yes they're good and yes the bartender was incredibly knowledgeable about the beers. However, a lot of the beers are your run of the mill everyday beers. The Public House did have some craft beers and even had Smokey the Beer from Resurgence. I, however, decided to go with Sam Adams Seasonal Summer ale, my aunt - Shocktop, and Ben - a beer he absolutely loved that was recommended by the bartender (one I hadn't heard of before). The food. We split the chicken fingers, our order came with four fingers and three very delicious sauces, one of which was an aioli sauce and deeelicious. I got the beef burger with avocado, medium rare, with fries. I ended up getting a side of the aioli sauce to dip my fries in because a) I'm a foodie and b) the sauce was that good. My aunt got the chick pea and bean burger, Ben got the Ruben, and my cousin got the seven grain salad. Everyone LOVED their food. The fries were REALLY good. Props to the chef. I look forward to a more extensive menu that will hopefully come, although you never know, they already have pub food... in a pub. My family couldn't believe how good the food was and I was happy to have brought them to The Public House. I look forward to grabbing a couple drinks there with friends. Based on previous reviews I expected a menu with only a handful of items, but it was standard bar menu length. Everything looked pretty good, too. The house made veggie burger was tasty. It's a bit mushy, but to be expected with a bean based burger. As a warning, the pulled chicken in the buffalo chicken mac and cheese is pulled off of chicken wings and has the skin on (which gets flabby once it's baked in the dish). Coming from Albany, hearing a name like public house immediately brings to mind a brew pub of sorts. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was wrong. Not that the decor was screaming high class. But, the paintings had little placards. That's a nicety you don't normally find at places like this. We were sat at a table with a brown paper table cloth(?). Which had me hoping crayons were on the way. They weren't. Luckily, our server (who's name I never got) was fairly attentive and the wait wasn't bad. The menu was just three columns on a page, and that's okay with me because I don't like getting overwhelmed with choices. I got a pastrami reuben, my date got the chicken fingers in panko. I wish that the menu was a little clearer on which food items came with sides, we may not have ordered the side fries if we knew ahead of time that my sandwich would come with them. Our server did notify us, but, at that point we just wanted our food and proceeded with the order anyways. The food didn't take too long and when it got there it was amazing. Everything about the meal had a little twist to it that most places won't be able to replicate. Even the 2 slices of pickle I had on my plate were filled with unexpected flavors, I had to reluctantly give up my 2nd slice so that my date could try it. My reuben was great! I get them every where and this is one of the better ones for the price. I did steal a chicken finger to try out the pesto dipping sauce, and I wish i could bottle that up and take it with me everywhere. This was a great place and I'd recommend it to anyone. I had another great meal at the public house. The muscles are incredible, they come in a creamy spicy broth which is addicting. I dipped all the bread then just starting drinking it out of the shells. The grilled romaine is also a good unique starter. It gives a good spin on a typical starter. I also had a great burger, and the fries were perfect, crispy and salty. Everything went perfect with the Stone tangerine IPA they had on tap. I really liked it here ! We stopped in on a Thursday night l, around 7:30 and it was relatively empty, except for a few loud patrons at the bar. The place itself is nice, fun decor, an area for eating, a large bar and an outdoor patio. The hostess/waitress sat us immediately and got us some water and talked about their specials. She was a great waitress, took care of us well, but didn't hover. Our food came our quickly and piping hot. My husband got the deep fried lamb and bacon pizza (weekly special). I got their Waldorf salad and then we split fries. The salad and fries were awesome. Salad was fresh and crunchy, fries were well seasoned and house made. My husband liked the stuffed/fried pizza but felt it was misrepresented. He said it was more like a deep fried meat sandwich. (Ie no sauce, needed more cheese). Either way we cleared our plates. They lost a star because of the 3 people at the bar were so loud and swearing constantly. The lady with them was screaming really crass things. I know they can't control that but I was surprised the bar tender didn't ask them to bring it down just a bit. It wasn't 11 pm, it was still dinner time. Read about The Public House on Buffalo Rising (and then saw Nicole's review), so we decided to check it out after dinner for a beer. Interior is awesome. Great pub feel, but still classy. Beer selection is decent. Draughts were good; we got a 21st Amendment Watermelon and a Saranac Wild Hop Pils. They have a good selection of cans and bottles as well. I did not notice until AFTER we ordered, but they also have a fair number of speciality cocktails on the chalkboard way in the back, including a Moscow Mule, which I LOVE. I just wish I had seen it before I ordered my beer; it looked delicious! The smokey basil lemonade also sounded and looked awesome! The place was jam packed (good sign) but it was very loud. Bartenders were friendly but seemed frazzled and rightfully so seeing as how new it is. The cash register is old and they seemed to be taking a very long time with the credit card machines. My cousin and I happened to be walking down Hertel yesterday evening, and couldn't help but notice the amount of people pouring in and out of this place. Naturally, we had to go in to what the buzz was about. Upon entering, a hostess handed us a drink ticket for a free drink at the bar - how awesome!! (Later, I found out that it happened to be 'friends & family' night - which explains the massive amount of people). We headed to the bar and ended up trying a couple of different concoctions beyond our "free drink". The first thing I noticed: the number of craft beer taps!! Plenty of great choices (see photo). They also have a fully stocked refrigerator/cooler behind the bar with plenty of bottled choices. We graciously received a "Smoky basil lemonade" cocktail, from Frank who was behind the bar. It was delicious! All of the bartenders and staff we encountered were friendly, welcoming, and made the ambiance a fun place to be. We can't wait to return and check out their menu selections. As someone whom loves to go out to a restaurant and have some drinks on a random night of the week, this place is it. The atmosphere is hipster meets young professionals with a splash of the older crowd. I first set foot in the place about 2 months after they opened. It helps that I know one of the bartenders and he suggested I stop by to check the place out. So I did. Their beer selection is phenomenal. They have some of my favorites Anchor Steam, EBC BlueBerry and Lindemans Raspberry Lambic. I've had the burger with bacon, cheddar and bbq sauce. It was delicious. Cooked just right at medium well and came with a side of fries. I love that they are hand/fresh cut but I'm not a fan on the seasoning they use on them. I'm the odd one out apparently! Now once I got a drink it was decently prepared (Jameson and coke, hard to mess up) but my girlfriend got a dark side of the moon( Guinness and blue moon layered) and it was just a terrible mix. With that out of the way my glass sat empty for 15 min as the bartender continuously walked by while I looked at him while neglecting to ask if I'd like another. The best thing about this place is the atmosphere and decor. A huge improvement from the last couple places that occupied the space. The food is pretty good but the menu is limited. Just soup, salad, a few appetizers and sandwiches. Because nothing really grabbed me, I went with the grilled cheese (added tomato and bacon) on sourdough. It was great, but the accompanying fries were extremely over-salted. Although they boast about their 80+ beer selection, it's really not a unique or impressive list. There was no beer that I hadn't seen before. That 80+ includes all your boring, run of the mill domestics and Canadian beers. So in my book, they don't get any points for their drink selection. The reason I had to drop this from 4 to 3 stars is the restaurant was so unbearably hot that I couldn't wait to get out. We were all dripping sweat. No air flow and clearly no A/C (or at least not where we were). It made the entire experience unpleasant and we wanted it over as soon as possible. Last negative note: they could not split our check for us (apparently they don't have computers? That was the excuse they gave). We understood and made it work because we didn't learn MATH from common core, but this could be a problem for some people. read more

I really like the concept of The Public House: a simple, customizable sandwich menu, and a comprehensive craft beer list. Each time I've been here, I've had a good experience, and good service. The last time I was there, I ordered the grilled chicken avocado wrap. After I started eating the wrap, I noticed there was no avocado mixed in. The waitress was very apologetic and brought me out a small plate filled with avocado, so I was grateful for that! The wrap itself was very good. I think the atmosphere at Public House is kind of confusing-- it sometimes feels like a college bar, and other times feels like a restaurant. I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing, but just something I noticed each time...the constantly changing vibe. Came here with Bradley on a whim for dinner. The bar was dark, but inviting. We liked chatting with the bartender for a bit. I ordered the Pink Buffalo and it was delicious! For food we split a cup of beer cheese soup, the Caesar salad, and chicken fingers. The beer cheese soup was the best I've ever had! I almost ordered another cup for dessert! It was very thick and creamy. I'm drooling now writing this. The salad was huge and delicious too! A few days after we went Brad was saying that he wanted some of their home made dressing.
