Never judge book by its cover. My friend has raved about this place for a while now and the other night I met her there for dinner. She warned me it was a "hole in the wall" and she was right. Personally, I love dive bars, so I wasn't afraid I would call this more of a neighborhood bar. Finding it... I thought I was going down the wrong road because it's sort of behind factories and train tracks and sits at the end of a street in the middle of a neighborhood. No big signage no big parking lot just an old building that probably was someone's house at some point in time. The exterior is nothing fancy. But as soon as you open the door, you are definitely in a neighborhood bar. We're probably "everyone knows your name "I got there at 4:15 and the place was packed. There's a bar area and a separate smallish dining room with maybe 15 tables. Maxx clearly has a lot of regulars because my friend knew one of the groups of diners and finally enough I knew one of them too. This is probably a place where neighbors gather, or guys getting off from the Ford plant. Go to have drinks after work. The service was fast and friendly with one server Rob taking care of the whole place. I honestly don't know how she did it, but she did it well and with a smile the whole time. The menu was basic, but there's something for everyone. Burgers, wings, pizza, apparently they are known for their fish fry, and homemade clam chowder. One of my group had the fish fry and it looks so good. I had to take a picture of it and send it to my husband who is also a big fish fry fan. He was impressed. She and my friend had a cup of the clam chowder soup and I regretted not having the same because it looked absolutely delicious and piping hot. You could tell it was homemade. Both my friend and I were in the mood for pizza, and I wouldn't really order pizza from a place that's not known for it but order it we did. It had more of a thick crust, but it was crispy maybe a little overdone, but it was edible and tasty. I probably should have gone for the chicken finger sub or the wings. The prices are extremely reasonable. I mean really reasonable. The quantity of food was plentiful, the quality was good, service was great,. If you're looking for a cute little bar just for some basic food, friendly service and a cold beer give this place a try. And remember, don't judge it from the outside. read more

Finally made it over to Sneakers to grab a couple fish fries for takeout. This is definitely one of the better fish fries I've had in the Southtowns - every aspect of it was good. The fish was a tad oily and did hurt my stomach so if you're sensitive to fried foods this may not be for you, however, it was delicious. It came a butter piece of fresh bread, Cole slaw (your choice of oil or mayo based - we had the oil which was good), pasta salad, potato salad, and fries. All of the sides were delicious - my only complaint is that the potato salad was a bit wet too for my liking and the chunks of potatoes were all kind of inconsistent sized chunks lol. I'd get the fish fry again. It was only a 25 minute pick up time despite it being super busy when I arrived which was great. It was packed with locals and I can see why. The parking lot was pretty busy but there were several lots/street parking available. read more

I finally made it out here for a fish fry. Their legion of loyal locals are indeed correct. The fish was very tasty, maybe a tad greasy though. Sides were plentiful and honestly each one was fresh and tasty. I very seldom like every aspect of a fish fry and its sides but Sneakers delivered. read more

Fish fry was delicious. Two beer battered and two breaded. Fish was flaky and moist. Sides are all homemade. They even ask if you want your coleslaw made with oil or mayo. Very busy but service was terrific. Would definitely recommend and will be back. read more

4/5 for this dive bar. It's literally in the middle of a neighborhood so that's pretty cool - convenient for those that live nearby. The parking lot is huge and you can also park on the street. The bar itself looks small but they had a large dining area with plenty of tables. That's not to say it wasn't crowded because there were a ton of people packed in there for a Friday night. The service is the reason I would give a 4/5. There was no room at the bar, and I wasn't going to sit at a table for a takeout order so one of the locals told me to go to a small pick up window on the side of the bar. The bartender ignored me for a good 5 minutes before she came over to tell the guy behind me that she's only serving drinks. Well that would have been nice to know 5 minutes ago The waitress was eventually helpful to me, but I still feel it's important that I didn't necessarily feel welcomed here at the bar. Overall the food was fantastic. The fish was piping hot and fresh and all of the homemade salads were delicious. The bread they serve it with was sesame seed Italian bread and was just the perfect touch as opposed to the traditional rye that usually comes with fish fry's. this is my update from my previous encounter there..i am 71,and i really wanted a fish fry today and my young grandson said he had no issue going back in the tavern to get my order..the lady that waited on him previously said she does not condone or put up with anyone in the bar badgering anyone, including young kids..i am here to say that she is a lady of her word..they have an old saying that says [i said it, i meant it,and i am here to represent it ].and that is exactly what this wonderful lady did..she not only remembered my grandson when he walked in, she also did not forget her promise of nobody does that behavior when she is around...she welcomed him in with a smile, and to top it off, which myself and my grandson did not expect, she looked at my grandson and said this fish fry is on the house.!!.i did not know why my grandson had this huge smile on his face when he got back in the car..i started to smile and i said to him,that is what integrity means,that is what it means to keep your word to someone,even a stranger.that is what a classy person is.!! read more

Went here for dinner on a Tuesday evening during Covid. The restaurant was not busy, although the barroom had a few patrons. We were promptly greeted and took our choice of tables on a warm November evening with all the windows open. We both ordered barbecue wings which were served within fifteen minutes. The wings were prepared on a pit and were excellent. I had a draft ale which was tasty as well. The atmosphere is very basic and it seemed like they are busier during lunch. The cost was very reasonable and the restaurant was clean, but not updated. We will certainly return as we have heard their fish fry is equally good. read more

I have to say, Sneaker's is the quintessential Buffalo tavern/restaurant combo. A bar catering mostly to the neighborhood locals, but also welcoming to non-regulars. All of the food we've had is of very good quality and value, critical for a neighborhood establishment. It doesn't need to be fancy, just good quality at reasonable prices with friendly service. This is your staple whole in the wall, neighborhood bar that serves great food and has really friendly staff. We have enjoyed coming here for the last 4 or 5 years, originally just for Friday fish fry's, but we've expanded it to whenever we are in the area and want a hot meal. The menu is fairly expansive for a little kitchen, but we've not had a single bad meal yet. Their fish fry is one of the best in Buffalo, and all of their other staples are just as tasty. I was very happy with my fish fry, the macaroni salad, potato salad, and my coleslaw. Our french fries were cold but if they were hot they would've been great. Service on the other hand was not as good. Took at least 10 minutes for our server to greet us and did not check on us once. Only time she approached our table was to take my vinegar, mind you I had not even used it yet, and take it to another table. I needed a lemon for my fish and was not given an opportunity to ask and would've requested my fries be remade. After finishing our meal, we sat for probably twenty minutes waiting for the check. I have been on a mission for many years to find a place that sells a fish fry that can compare to the one sold at Wiechec's. Meaning, the same type of batter, the same size fish, and that they include all three sides ( coleslaw, potato salad, and macaroni salad). The wait times at wiechec's can get to be crazy and we would like to have another alternative available if needed. YELPERS : if you know of another place, let me know! Sneaker's is the first one I found to match up to those parameters. They also accept credit cards, which is nice. We went here on a Friday in Lent around 5 p.m. and ended up waiting approximately 1/2 hour. Half of the building is made up of a bar, so the eating area is very small and only has 12 tables back there. We ended up going to the bar and asking the bartender to put us on the list. I really wanted to like this, folks. I was disappointed. The portion size was amazingly large. But the batter just wasn't very flavorful and the bottom half of the fish (plus all the fries underneath it) were soaking in grease. I understand the concept of using french fries underneath the fish, just like wiechecs, as an oil absorber, but the amount of grease was just crazy. I didn't end up eating the bottom half of my batter and most of my French fries. The Macaroni salad was tasty, but the coleslaw had the biggest chunks of cabbage I've ever seen in a coleslaw. It was not finely shredded at all, it was like eating a chopped salad. Plus, it was super watery and had flooded all over the plate, saturating my fries. So between the grease and the coleslaw juice, the fries were pretty much destroyed. Bummer I could not eat the potato salad. At first bite, the flavors tasted fine, but then there was a rancid aftertaste and I truly 100% believe that the potato salad had gone bad. Yikes. And it's not like I'm picky, I have never found a potato salad I didn't enjoy. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, despite it being busy there. The other thing that bothered me was, because it was a small restaurant, any tables close to the bar meant people standing right next to your chairs , either waiting for a seat or waiting for their takeout meal. I don't like people hovering over me while I'm eating, looking at their crotch regions, or bumping into me constantly.... I wish the waitresses would try to corral them away from the people trying to enjoy their meals. The place is easy to find. It's a couple blocks up from the milestrip exit of the 90. read more

My fiance and I have gone to this place a few times. The bar is perfect for a low key night out and it's one of those places where the regulars are very nice and personable. The food is really good: I enjoyed their fish fry and personal pizza, and my fiance said "best cheeseburger sub ever." I've even had a julienne salad and it was very good.
