Went to Schunks for the first time on Friday (of Labor Day weekend). We had drinks at the bar and was seated fairly quickly event though they were busy. Service at the bar was ok, great service at the table. Bar area was nice to have a few drinks before dinner or even eat on that side. When we went to order they informed us they were out of fish and baked potatoes which was a bummer because it was Friday! But made sense cause they were going to be closed for Labor Day weekend. Ended up getting shrimp and scallops au gratin with mashed potatoes - good! Also got the prime rib special that my husband said was delicious! We split the garlic parm cheese curds which were very good! Will definitely be back! read more

Heading to our first Corn festival we realized we were hungrier for something more substantial than festival food. So we checked on Yelp and found Schunks. And folks were we so happy we did. As mentioned in many reviews Schunks is, well, remote. But unless you're a local It's a nice drive in the countryside. We're from Derby so we enjoyed it. Upon arrival it looked outside about what you'd expect for the location. There's adequate parking even if it is kinda rustic. They weren't busy at around 3:30pm. We entered by what turned out to be the bar door and were warmly greeted, so we sat at the bar with a few folks. Got some tasty drinks and began studying the nice menu. Our intent was something simple and fast. We weren't expecting what happened next. I chose a sandwich and my wife a burger. I happened to be talking to my wife about the dinner menu and the steaks and Prime Rib on the menu. The bartender overheard me and said "oh if you can wait a few minutes the Prime Rib will be coming fresh out of the oven." Increased heartbeats, sitting up straight, mouths beginning to salivate, broad smiles coming across our faces as we gleamed into each other's eyes. You see my wife and I are very, very different in our culinary preferences. We've been that way for 27 years. We simply don't generally have the same palette on most things. However Prime Rib is probably the most favorite of our common food loves. So you can just imagine the unspoken conversation we had about what to order, ha! We both got the Prime Rib of course I'm a MR she's a Med and loves an end cut which she knew she would most likely be able to get this early. Fresh hot baked potatoes and veg, with au jus, horseradish and all the fixin's. Woohoo! When our order came out man oh man was it amazing. We ate and drank and chatted with the bartender, the owner, many of the regulars and all in all it was a fabulous time. Shunks is a little out of the way restaurant and pub in Eden. The atmosphere is a time capsule, and this is not a place for a romantic dinner. However the food was of very good quality and very reasonably priced. My wife had an excellent prime rib dinner, and it was only $21. I had a burger which was some of the tastiest burger meat I remember eating in years. I don't know what the mix and seasoning is but these burgers had great flavor and it was huge, I could not finish it. We did not stop at the bar area but it looked like a fairly busy crowd of regulars and the jukebox was playing a nice mix of classic country and classic rock. Our waitress may have been a little overwhelmed, she did a great job, but it appeared she had to handle too many tables by herself and it was only getting busier as we left so I hope some more help arrived for her. A little shack in the middle of nowhere, with great food. The menu isn't huge, steaks, burgers fish fry's, but everything on it is delicious. The people are really friendly and prices are reasonable. The bar is pretty basic you're not getting top shelf or craft anything but that's OK because the food is the draw. if you don't live in Eden, GPS is a must.This place is literally on top of a huge hill with nothing around but farms. We were looking for new place to try out and thanks to Yelp they definitely helped ,, went to schunks on good reviews posted and it didn't disappoint,,it was like 3/4 pm was kinda slow cuz of Father's Day but menu was great didn't try fish fry but definitely coming back , like the fact they do fish frys Friday and Saturday. I swear to God, this place is in the middle of a cornfield in Eden, New York. Only one sign telling you that you've arrived. We had Beef on Weck and several cocktails and it was so much fun I can't wait to come out here again and experience this place. Very very dog friendly. read more

YES! YES! YES! This place is the bomb.com! Just outside Hamburg, NY in Eden on a side country road is this hidden gem. Serving up one of the absolute best steaks I have ever experienced. Along with some fantastic sides. The Porterhouse has that char flavor you only get from a seasoned grill. So juicy and delicious. First bite knocks you off your chair and these sides alone are worth the trip. Sweet potato fries anywhere else rarely have a crunch to them, these do. Super good. Got the honey on the side. Clam chowder was full of veggies and chunks of meat with great flavor. A bit on the salty side, but no real complaints. Potato salad and macaroni salad were both made just like grandmothers have been making in kitchens all across America. You can taste there is no store bought, cheap factory made stuff here. Superb! Their peanut butter pie didn't get its picture taken because within seconds, three forks were digging into it. Whoa! Just whoa! You HAVE to try it. Save room. (Or don't and just stuff your face!) We found out about this country dinning jem a few months back at a Yelp elite event. The first visit was an A+ five star for food taste/quality and quantity. I went with the Saturday Prime rib special it was tasty and a good size in portion. What blew me away was the Mashed potatoes they were by far the best mashed potatoes I ever had. We told friends and family how good they are. We went back this past weekend. I started with the clam chowder which was not good at all it might as well of been celery chowder as the bowl was full of it! The prime rib beef was not as good as last time. Now the kicker completely different mashed potatoes! The first time they were the creamiest smoothest I ever had with great taste. This weekend they were very dry, no flavor. Take a look at my pictures and the difference in looks alone on the potatoes. I asked our server if the potatoes were the same and she said yes. Then I showed her the difference in the pictures and she said oh yeah they are really different they must of changed. They must of been made by a different person. I see a sign looking for a cook so they must of had a change in the kitchen. I hope they correct the issues and bring back our first experience. Not sure we will return anytime soon! read more

I'm a WNY native. I lived in New York City from 2013-2017. During that period, I visited the area several times annually to see family. Upon arriving at the Depew Amtrak station, I often made a beeline for Schunk's. As bragworthy as some NYC cuisine is, there's nothing in the Big Apple that can satisfy a craving for true Buffalo flavor, and Schunk's always met that standard. In fact, I even purchased bottles of their famous honey garlic Buffalo sauce to take back to Brooklyn with me, but my home cooking never compared to the steaming-hot platter of saucy, perfectly-crisp chicken wings or fingers I could count on as a customer at Schunk's, accompanied by a side of greasy-but-not-too-greasy house-cut fries. I've since moved back to the area and I still occasionally order from Schunk's. However, the quality of their food has become a real hit-and-miss. It lacks the consistency I once relied on when I was jonesing for some authentic Buffalo cuisine. Here's why. Sometimes, the wings are perfect, according to "typical" local standards - meaty, saucy, and crisp, but not overdone. Unfortunately, however, it's become more commonplace for the wings to be small, extremely dry, and barely sauced. The last time my family and I ordered from Schunk's, we honestly couldn't tell if our order of medium wings had any sauce on them, period. Our order of honey garlic wings had a minimally thin layer of sauce on them - in other words, a barely-noticeable tinge of flavor, as if they'd been shaken in a sauce vessel that desperately needed replenishing. Both orders contained a disproportionate number of flats, with just 2 or 3 drums in each. All the wings had barely any meat on them. My advice is to request an additional side of sauce for wings and fingers, which you'll have to pay extra for. Even after adding the side cup of sauce, the food won't be up to par with what it once was, but it'll be okay. Unless you get lucky and receive a rare "good batch" of wings or fingers, are willing to risk receiving a substandard product, or you like your food bone-dry and lacking flavor, you may want to consider getting your dinner elsewhere or ordering something other than wings or fingers. I recommend being vocal about any dissatisfaction you have with the wings, fingers, or anything else about the establishment. Schunk's is a family-owned small-town business that I know values their customers and wants to do right by them - perhaps, if enough people speak up, they'll go back to their "old ways." I like to end even my critical reviews on a positive note. In my opinion, the drink prices at Schunk's have always been extremely reasonable, especially when it comes to their cocktails, which always seem to contain a generous house pour. read more

We ordered two fish fries to go and were very happy with our experience. Even on a very busy Friday night, the service was very fast and friendly and the wait for our order was even less than the quoted 20 minutes. The servings were generous and the food was very tasty, even after the 10-minute drive home. The substantially-sized pieces of fried haddock came with large helpings of slaw, mac salad, choice of potato (I think the choices were fries, potato salad, or baked potato), tartar sauce and a slice of lemon. We both opted for fries, since I read that they are hand-cut instead of frozen, and they were excellent. So much better than the usual frozen ones! I also really appreciated the tartar sauce, which wasn't the overly-sweet variety. The slaw and mac salad tasted like they were made in-house because they also were not super sweet, like the store-bought ones usually are. The mac salad reminded me of my mother's and had a nice onion-bite to it. The stand out of the meal, however, was the fish. The batter was not greasy at all and even after the ride home, the coating was was nice and crisp. The take out containers felt like they weighed 2 or 3 pounds each and we had enough food for lunch the next day. Had a dinner there tonight, and although the tavern food we ordered, fingers and weck were good, the prime rib fell way short. Dry and tough, with a small potato and undercooked broccoli, it was hardly a meal to remember. The part that tanked the review was that the room was a chilly 62°(the thermostat was within view), and that was sitting on top of the electric stove. The draft coming down from the window was chilling me to the bone. We could not enjoy our food with it being so cold in there. We will wait until summer to visit again and stick with tavern fare. read more

We have been going here for well over 10 years. We always loved it. Our meals were always top notch and the meat was always top notch. I'm not sure what has happened but the past 3 meals that we have had there this year have been horrible. I understand that meat prices have skyrocketed but I would recommend raising prices opposed to sacrificing quality. I've heard this complaint from more than one of their regular customers and to be honest we won't be back until we hear that its improved. read more
