We generally dine 2-3 times a month at The Steer. The exceptional quality is consistent, the service is great (thanks, Hailey!). The restaurant has a done a great job over the past year, prioritizing safety protocols throughout the pandemic. The natural vegan menu options are a huge draw for us. We have a favorite pizza topped with quinoa balls, among other delicious ingredients. Up to this point The Steer is five stars. We learned on our last visit that this dish will, going forward, feature Beyond Sausage, eliminating the quinoa balls. This pushes a dish with vegan cheese (one processed ingredient) over the edge to a rather unhealthy choice. Here are the ingredients in Beyond Sausage: Water, Pea Protein*, Refined Coconut Oil, Sunflower Oil, Natural Flavor, Contains 2% or less of: Rice Protein, Faba Bean Protein, Potato Starch, Salt, Fruit Juice (For Color), Vegetable Juice (For Color), Apple Fiber, Methylcellulose, Citrus Extract (To Protect Quality), Calcium Alginate Casing. *Peas are legumes. People with severe allergies to legumes like peanuts should be cautious when introducing pea protein into their diet because of the possibility of a pea allergy. Do you know what methylcellulose is? I want to applaud them for having a whole vegan section, but I hated the food. The garbanzo fries were very good, and I definitely recommend them. Based on other Yelp reviews, I ordered the quinoa meatballs. I don't know what I was thinking. I think I was sold by the word "creamy" describing the sauce in a review and "cashew ricotta" in the description. There was no cashew ricotta, and if it was mixed in with the red sauce, it was undetectable. The sauce was too acidic, the raw zucchini spiral noodles were too thick and too long. The water from the sauce had separated out, so when my dish was put before me, it had thick crushed tomatoes on top and a pool of water in the bottom of the bowl. The meatballs were bitter. The whole dish felt like a punishment. I was raised to never ever waste food, so this was the very first time in my life where I request a box for the unfinished portion of my meal. My husband ordered the max and cheese. It more closely resembled alfredo than macaroni and cheese. He got it because he loves cashew cream sauces, but this was a watery disaster with cashew grit all through it. When you soak cashews and blend them, it should be completely smooth. This sauce had visible bits of cashew throughout which made for an unpleasant mouth feel. The fact that we paid money for this food is weighing heavily on me. I seriously regret this meal. Everyone around us at the other tables was eating bacon cheeseburgers and it made me wish I didn't think eating meat was cruel. My uncle ordered the pumpkin falafel and loved it. The waitress recommended the black bean burger, but I have a chip on my soldier about veggie burgers being the only veg option for decades, and $10 seemed like a lot of a bean burger. For me, it's not worth going back just to try something else. I'd rather go to Amy's Place than risk another disaster here. Overpriced. Meh quality. It's kind of cute how they have the whole Brokeback Mountain Theme (kinda like Outback Steakhouse or Texas Roadhouse, but those chains are a lot better than The Steer). If that's your thing, that's the best thing about this place. But the food was just "okay" and they are charging too much for what you get. The hostess must have been having a bad day (but our waitress was nice, at least). I don't know why anyone would got here when there were way better, and better value, places in Buffalo. Came here for the abundance of meat friendliness with a section for the vegan in your family. A very large menu for the meat eater. A dash of unique combinations. The vegan menu was not extensive, however it was a two thumbs up from the vegan in our group. The food: I got a burger. Cheese, smoked bacon, the burger cooked to medium perfection. It was actually cooked the way I wanted. Mac and cheese: (***)whenever I go to anything close to a bbq place in buffalo I try the Mac and cheese. I want to like this place, but am always underwhelmed when I stop in. The menu looks amazing, but the food doesn't live up to expectations. The experience starts at the entrance. It smells like stale booze and bleach when you first walk in - probably due to the large, usually busy bar at the entrance. There is a "wait to be seated" sign right up front at the bar, but no obvious place to wait (i.e. hostess stand). The most recent time I visited the bartender seated us by a fireplace, which was cozy. And came in handy every time the door opened and a cool breeze came through. Our waitress was not chatty or smiley, but not rude in any way. More of a stick to the business type, which was fine but a little strange. Maybe she was just annoyed with working a Monday night shift. I got a Memphis burger with a veggie burger and my co-diner got the taco de carne. The burger was fine, but the bacon was too well done and I only got a small handful of blah fries. The tacos were bland, with only a small amount of steak and some queso fresca in them and a small pile of pico on the side. Each taco (there were 3) had 2 shells, so the ratio of tortilla to filling was way off. And there wasn't anything else with it. Blah. They try to have a view to the kitchen, but all I saw through the window to the kitchen was the utility closet full of cleaning supplies. Yum. The bathroom area is shared with the bar. It's a little strange. 4 rooms with occupied/open locks on the door, all sharing a sink area that's open to the bar. My toilet didn't flush and I walked in on a guy in the ladies stall, but willing to chalk those up to bad luck. We didn't opt for dessert or cocktails, so no judgement on those. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when being asked if I wanted to meet up for lunch at the Steer. I had just eaten at lake effect diner and had a great experience so figured the same owner would deliver similar results. When I first walked in, the bar is what caught my eye. It was huge! I'm assuming very accommodating to the college crowd that reside in the area. I really liked the western-y feel and the decorations of bull skulls and bones added to the flair. I felt warm and cozy immediately and was really impressed with the fireplace upon entering the dining room. It definitely had a sort of ski-chalet feel to it. While looking over the menus I was really happy to see so many different choices of burgers, flatbread pizzas and sandwiches. I was especially interested in the "Elvis Bad Ass Burger" which boasts peanut butter, bacon, banana, honey, and american cheese but didn't know if I would be able to actually stomach it (I was on my lunch break with half a days work left!) I would however be willing to give it a shot someday-two thumbs up for the creativity! My lunch consisted of two flatbread pizzas, (split two ways)-one with steak, blue cheese and spinach and the other a southwest with grilled chicken, smoked bacon, cheddar and a BBQ black bean sauce. Both were equally yummy although I liked the steak one more (steak was cooked perfectly!!) Only gripe I had came with the salad I ordered afterwards. It was a griddled goat cheese and roasted beet salad with cranberry vinaigrette. I ordered the salad without carrots and croutons simply because they just didn't seem to fit into the dynamic of the salad. When I got the salad, I immediately noticed there were no beets in it and the dressing tasted way more like balsamic. The waiter explained that they had indeed replaced the cranberry with balsamic. I was pretty bummed but decided to order extra dressing anyways. Upon arrival of the dressing the waiter explained that he was mistaken and what I was eating really was the cranberry vinaigrette (ummm..ok?) The griddled goat cheese, however, was amazing. My most recent Steer experience involves happy hour and it was actually quite good. Just before the holidays a few colleagues decided we should all get together and grab some post work drinks. Since we are at UB South, the Steer is close and a solid choice. When we arrived we took a seat in the bar area and were promptly greeted. Our server told us about the happy hour specials and we decided they would fit our needs. Drink wise I was boring and had an Angry Orchard. Nothing exciting to review there. The happy hour food,however, was noteworthy. The pepperoni pizza and the nachos were both excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to come back and get the pizza for a quick dinner in a pinch. All together the cost for 6 of us (3 apps and one drink each) was under $50! If you need a place for a decent happy hour and are in the heights, the Steer is still a decent choice. read more

Lots of options for all of your dietary needs and preferences! I have been here on several occasions at different times during the day. Brunch is usually a great time to go! Have never had to wait too long (at all) for a table and the bloody Mary's are perfect! My favorite item on the menu is the loaded nachos plate! I almost always insist on ordering it as an appetizer for the table. They are very accommodating to vegetarians and will gladly make without meat. Went for dinner with four long-time friends. The server was very nice and efficient. The cocktails were very good. However, the food was disappointing. We ordered nachos with guacamole, chick pea tots, and a seafood appetizer for the table. For entrees, one friend ordered a burger, two others ordered pasta dishes, and the other friend and I ordered the beef short ribs. The burger was fine, the pasta was not hot, but they liked the flavor. The short ribs, however, were terrible. I expect short ribs to melt off the bone. These were tough, to the point where it was difficult to cut them, and they tasted like pot roast that's been in the fridge for a week. We both sent them back, and we're not "send it back" people. We each ordered something else -- I ordered a burger; I don't know what my friend ordered. A half hour later, the server came back to tell us that they were out of what my friend ordered, and my burger would be up soon. It shouldn't have taken that long to inform us of the missing menu item, and it certainly have taken that long to cook a burger. The server had brought us a plate of fries, and we'd enjoyed the appetizers, so that, on top of frustration and the fact that everyone else was finished eating, made us not want our entrees any more. My friend declined to order anything else, and I had my burger packaged to go. I'm very disappointed in this meal, and I don't plan to go back any time soon. I have a rule - if I'm disappointed by a place twice in a row it's moved to my black list. This is my most recent addition. The last time I went to The Steer was about 9 months ago. I ordered the Chicken Caesar salad which took forever to come out of the kitchen and not worth the wait. Bland, small and the chicken was dry. Since this place was a staple for me when I was vegetarian I chalked it up to a bad night. I went again tonight since we were in the area and couldn't get into one of my favorite spots down the street. One of the members of our party is gluten intolerant, so I thought The Steer would be a good choice. Nope. Took 45 minutes to get cold food. My friend ordered his burger without cheese - they definately forgot and just scraped it off. Our fries were hard, cold and stuck together. The only person who seemed happy with their order got a pizza which I'm assuming was finished last since it was still warm. You can usually walk in and get a table with no wait, but you'll wait quite a while for your food. The servers are nice but don't check on you often. First time brunchin in Buffalo and I was NOT DISAPPOINTED. Great energy inside and the chicken and waffles did not disappoint. But what's brunch without mimosas! We got our bottles of champagne and orange juice and we made our own, this made me very happy. Came in last weekend at 8:00 with another couple who had never dined here before. We were able to make reservations for four and were greeted right away. Our server was super friendly and helpful. Our drinks were great and we had a terrific table by the fireplace. Though there was a decent bar crowd, the noise level was completely fine and didn't disturb people seated in the dining room. I ordered gluten free pasta and it was simply perfect. Everyone else had burgers and they were prepared exactly to order. Great parking lot which on Main Street in the city is difficult to come by. I was looking for a decent place to grab lunch and decided to stop here. Very glad that I did. I was hoping for a fish fry but it wasn't available at the time that I had stopped by. I ended up with a mahi and shrimp po boy which sounded like a very interesting combination but turned out to be very tasty. The fresh cut fries are a plus as well. Definitely have to shout out the bartender Misty that kept me entertained while I waited for my lunch. I noticed a few out of the box options here so I will definitely be back to try a few. I've been wanting to go to The Steer for years and finally making it there Valentines night I was extremely dissatisfied. We were able to get a last minute reservation and when we walked in there were many empty tables. That should of been my first clue. I ordered the vegan lasagna which was absolutely delicious but the portion was extremely small and I was starving when I left. They should offer salad or bread or an other side. Ok so hear me out for this review. First off the service was good and the foos tasted great. Me and my wife had no problem with our server or anything. The food came out in a reasonable time after we ordered and it was hot. The restaurant looked clean inside and out and had a nice bar. First time I ordered from here the food was decent I had loaded mash potatoes , macaroni and wings. Second time I order from here I ordered loaded mash potato's but the mash potatoes had everything that's usually on top of the potatoes was blended into it. I ordered a grilled chicken Caesar salad from here and I opened the box and found 2 bad lettuce stalks and what's suppose to be "croutons" and watery Caesar dressing , there was no chicken. Once again this place is horrible. Tonight the staff was friendly, but everything we asked him he "could not do because of the owner" this owner is screwing up. First off no substitutions? All I wanted was sweet potato fries rather then regular ones...both are the same exact price on the sides menu as well. And I was told they owner does not allow any substitutions, I've never been anywhere in my life that doesn't allow the substitution for sweet potato fries or anything else (even if it's a small extra charge that I very well would have paid) Next, we came here to watch the UB basket ball game and were told that the owner did not want the music turned off and the game turned on. This bar is in the UB area and this is a huge game...not that I follow them but according to my boyfriend, his friend and the other people around us watching the game it was in fact a very important game. You would think they could at least turn the volume for the game on. Instead the volume was very loud with "all of my love", "I lov rock and roll" and sublime songs blasting. Now the owner was present while we were there, complaining about a few things. One thing I was in happy with was that I was ASKED if I want to talk with the owner. If someone is complaining you do not ask of the customer wants to talk to a supervisor,manager or owner, you just inform them and then they should be addressing the issues regardless. I was a bit disappointed about this honestly. The best went clearly doesn't seem to know or understand his customers. Everyone here was between 25 and 38 I would say, all watching they TVs around, even an older couple came in around 60 and asked about he game bc they also wanted to watch and listen. The bartender was attentive and I want not mad at him for any issues we had at this place, minus that he asked if I wanted to talk with Zach who I assume is the owner. A short note to zach.... 1. your employees should be informing upset management about any issues customers have. 2. My Girlfriend and I showed up before the rest of the party. The place was empty save for a party seated already, and it took the waitress about a minute or so of standing there looking in our direction before she actually acknowledged us. She said "Hi" and my Girlfriend asked if they ate reservations, so as to see if anyone from the party we were waiting for had called ahead (we were there for a birthday thing). The waitress looked at my Girlfriend like she had three heads and then said "I don't think so." You don't think so? You work here! Anyway, we informed her we were waiting on five more. So as is customary, she offered to seat us and take our drink orders while we waited right? No, she grunted and walked off. Great first impression. To make a long story short, the service remained as stellar through out the dinner as it was when we were greeted. It took over an hour and a half to serve us our food and we were one of three parties there. One, as I mentioned earlier, was already there and being served as we were (finally) being seated, and one that came in an hour after us. So why it took over an hour and a half to get out food is beyond me. My Girlfriend and I were not too hungry, so we decided to share some of their pizzas. If you want pizza, this is not the place! The pizzas looked like tiny, slightly burnt flat breads; and they were bland. Completely flavourless. Look, I know this is a bar and all, but come on, at least a dash or oregano. I ordered the Blanco, sounded good. Supposedly it is a ricotta pizza with garlic, spinach and tomatoes. When a pizza is described as having garlic as an actual ingredient, I expect to taste it. My Girlfriend got the special, it was a chicken and avocado pizza. Instead of chicken, it had some bits of chicken that were clearly left next to open fish, and then a bunch of pork. We were going to split the pizzas, but that didn't happen because I can't eat pork. When we asked the waitress to verify what meat was used, she said she'd ask and then we never heard back. For whatever reason our party decided to order coffee after the "meal". So we ended up waiting for the check for another hour because of it. Yeah, it looks and smells much better in here (they must have read my previous review that commented on the wet mop smell) ... but that doesn't entitle them to charge $4-5 for a bottle of domestic beer ($5 for a Bud Light Lime??????). Their taps were out due to construction ... I can only hope they keep the same selection with reasonable prices. The older gentleman who previously bartended on the nights we went was replaced by a young 20-something blonde. While friendly, she was not attentive and was more interested in chatting with the guys than serving our group of friends. The ridiculous prices for crappy beer combined with the bad service caused The Steer to lose out on a group of 10+ girls who were ready to drink for hours. I had heard the vegan options at The Steer were awesome, but I was dubious. Boy, was I wrong. My friend and I had an absolutely delicious dinner there tonight of vegetarian lasagna made with super thin slices of squash place of pasta , that new plant based ground meat, red sauce, and a cashew cream. Not only was it the best vegan entree I have had at a non-ethnic restaurant in Buffalo, but it looked absolutely beautiful. The top had been put under the broiler so that the top got slightly crispy and browned. The textures were sublime, and the seasoning balanced. I was also smitten with the light hand the chef used with the salt. In addition, I ordered their falafel salad. The falafel was super fresh and un-greasy. There were two to an order which also had an assortment of greens, berries and nuts. You have a choice of dressings. Very nice for a lighter meal or lunch. Be warned, the lasagna was on the nightly specials menu, so it may not be available the night you go. Luckily, there are other vegan options on the besides a variety of salads. And there are an abundance of veggie side dishes. To add to our delight, our server, Hailey, was terrific. Friendly, accommodating and helpful. So there is no way the Steer is getting any less than 5 stars from me. If I could give it 100, I would. As a college student living in Buffalo for four and a half years, the Steer became my second home, so I'm pretty much an expert on the place. The food is nothing less than spectacular. (The burgers and wings have always been my favorite.) Fitting into the category of the "broke college student" for quite some time, I've managed to spend almost 5 years eating and drinking at this place several times a week without going completely bankrupt. The bartenders are very generous with the amount of liquor they pour into mixed drinks, and the prices definitely don't show it. I do have one small complaint.......... BRING BACK THE OLD STEER! They recently built a little lounge in this place which COMPLETELY ruined it. They no longer have space for the pool table that so many of my college memories revolve around...... Yes I'm young, yes I'm in dental school, and I've only been to the Steer twice and only to eat. The burgers are pretty solid - there's nothing wrong with them and there's nothing great about them and certain ones are hall off on Thursdays, which is an awesome deal. The bartender was nice and attentive while keeping all the customers happy. The wings are really good and I don't even like wings. The red chili lime is the way to go - it was SO frickin good. The wings were crisp and not too saucy. The hot BBQ was ok and didn't taste like either or. Served with a good serving of carrots and celery, which was surprisingly fresh and delicious. The only thing is that a double order of wings was not really that many in it for $17 (maybe 15 or 17?) and I think you have to pay $1 extra for splitting the order to two sauces. So I was splitting the pulled pork sandwich...jeez...please if you ever listen to anything I have to say - PLEASE DO NOT get that sandwich. It looked like baked beans. There was no strings of pork - no pork even showing. It was just brown blob of something on the sandwich. I took a bite and I couldn't get past the texture of baked beans and it didn't taste quite right. Usually, I'd be able to eat something I don't like, but this was bad and we told the bartender and switched out for a burger. That was nice :) but I felt like a butthole. Me and a couple of friends came here on a Monday afternoon. Place wasn't busy at all, so it was nice and open for us. Service was really good, waitress who was also the bartender at the time was attentive. Food came out promptly, and was great. Granted my group only ordered their " bad ass" burgers, we throughly enjoyed it. Menu looks promising. Nachos were served just how nachos should be, on a big plate, lotta chips and smothered with toppings. Overall good experience, will come back for more. read more

I've always been a somewhat reluctant fan of The Steer. I hate what it turns into on Thursdays and Saturdays (...but I would never ask them to change, because it is the best college bar on Main street in University Heights). That being said, in the last decade since I left college, I have occasionally been to The Steer for food and a beer. Before the crowd or on the more relaxed nights it is quite a fine bar with a good menu. If you like Coles or Fat Bobs, there is no reason you can't have as much fun at The Steer. I went yesterday evening for dinner at the bar and was very happy with the new menu. It was recently changed, and as is boldly stated, they have pledged to "no longer use preservatives". I'm not sure what that suggests of the prior menu. Furthermore as often as possible the meat and veggies come from local farms. I had two "Steerwiches" - new smaller, cheaper a la carte burger-style sandwiches. (Just for size comparison, they are a little bigger than a standard fast food burger.) I had a grilled chicken sandwich, the Budha burger - a new hand pressed veggie burger, and locally cut fries. All were great. I'd call it mighty fine pub fare. And with the new Sam Adams Spring Ale and a Spaten, the beer selection matched the food. read more

Steer is one of those chameleon restaurants that hosts families and groups and by night it is a rowdy college bar. For those of you interested in food, they have some of the best french onion soup I've had in a while. Their brunch is very tasty and offers a wide variety of choices, the only issue is sometimes the bar still smells like Fireball from the night before. For you interested in the nighttime side of things, the Steer offers a huge bar in the middle of the building and a great selection of both beer and liquor. It usually hosts the UB college crowed, but they're a fun bunch. Overall I would say the Steer has something for everyone, whether you're looking for a good meal at a reasonable price or for a place to let off some steam on a Saturday night. read more

As the king of the UB/University Heights college bar scene...the stars above say it all. "Meh. I've experienced better." It's where a lot of the fraternities and sororities hang out and have their functions, and that never was my scene, so I suppose that's why I'm soooo unimpressed by it. Went there for a bar party when I was at the end of my college career at UB and I thought "OK. It's a bar. Where's my plastic cup of overpriced crap-ass beer?" Note: When I first walked in the place, the downstairs bar stunk of spilled beer, maybe some vomit(?); I was envisioning the swarms of fruit flies buzzing around their patrons heads, divebombing into their pints of draft Blue Light in the warmer months. Hadn't been to the Steer in six years and finally made my way in there on Sunday morning. I couldn't believe all the renovations that were made. The place looks completely different now, I thought the bar had a cozier vibe before the changes but still enjoyed spending the day there. They have an unlimited mimosa special on Sundays for $15 from noon to 4 as long as you buy a meal as well. The breakfast portions are absolutely HUGE. I did not taste any of their food, but my sister got the pancakes and said that they were SO delicious. They have an enormous menu, ENORMOUS, and very reasonably priced. Tons of burgers and salads. I am not a mimosa fan so I stuck with beer. They had average selections on tap; stella, guinness, magic hat #9, yuengling, blue moon and others. We spent the afternoon playing darts. They have two boards which are right on top of one another so if other people are playing next to you, plan on becoming good friends because it's a tight squeeze, they should be moved away from each other. Also, the standing room for darts is directly in front of the front door so you get blasted with cold wind every time someone walks in or out, and are always in the way too. The bartender didn't smile much and seemed like she could't wait to get out of there. She wasn't up for making conversation, not with me at least. Oh well. My biggest peeve about this place are the bathrooms. They are unisex individual stalls with doors. Same sinks for dudes and chicks. Not cool. Some girls want to go to the bathroom to fix their makeup and not have a guy watching her as he washes his hands in the sink adjacent to hers. ALSO, EVERYONE in the entire bar can see into the bathroom. There is a large window over the sinks. You may think you're doing a hair check and nobody can see you from the other side but in reality, everyone can. Good thing is, they have individual mirrors in the bathroom stalls. I felt slightly out of place here, the crowd was mostly college kids in their early 20's and then some older guys in their 50's. Still a relaxing place to hang though. read more
