Yelp removed my initial review because it contained "second hand information," so I'm back again because this place sucks, and I have FIRSTHAND experience. So, hope this satisfies your "standards," Yelp.
Speaking of standards... I'm vegan. I came to this restaurant the first time, excited to try their vegan menu items, especially the corn dogs, which I had heard were really good. The restaurant was busy, but they had an army of servers so I didn't expect the service to suck as much as it did. After waiting about 20 minutes to be seated, we waited another 10 for a server to come around and attend to us. Whatever, I'm a server myself, so I figured there had been a mix-up with who was responsible for our table or something. I get really excited when a restaurant has "official" vegan options because it usually means the staff understands veganism, and I'm safe to order anything that says vegan. Well, I ordered the vegan corndogs, and the server told me the sides available. I ask him what sides are vegan, he says he doesn't know, so I order the fries 'cause that's usually a safe bet--it's just fried potatoes. My meal comes out and there's a cup of something creamy-looking on top of the fries. I ask my server if it's vegan, and he says he doesn't know... He goes to the kitchen to ask, tells me that it's non-vegan fry sauce and comes back with salad vinaigrette for my corn dogs. Really? I finally just ask for some mustard and ketchup. I'm so impressed by the corn dogs, when our server comes back (after I motion him over because he hasn't even refilled our waters), I ask him what the hot dog part is made out of: soy, wheat gluten, etc. He doesn't know. He offers to ask, but at this point I'm kind of fed up with the fact that this kid has no clue about the food he's serving. At every restaurant I've worked at, you have to know the menu inside and out before they put you on the floor. After the meal, my friend and I sit around for about 15 minutes before our check is finally processed, by a different server, whom we also have to motion over.
Regardless of my first experience, I really loved the corndogs, so I rave about them to all of my vegan friends, posting a photo of my meal online with the fries, and I'm told by a friend that when she ate at Station 22, they told her the fries were not vegan. Wanting to know the facts myself, I send a polite email via their website, explaining that I really enjoyed my meal, but had heard the fries were not vegan, and if they wouldn't mind giving me a definitive answer so I could tell my friends and know what was safe for me to order the next time I ate there. I never got a reply, so I suggested that more of my vegan friends write in, so they would understand it wasn't just one person's concern. None of them received replies, either.
Still, wanting to think the best, I went back to the restaurant, 'cause those corn dogs were mind-blowing. Unfortunately they were out, so I ordered the ratatouille instead, because the server said it was vegan, and it was a pretty good sandwich. I asked him if the fries were vegan, and he told me no, so I ordered a side salad instead. Well, I guess I got my answer. This time, the service was even worse, though. After waiting about 20 minutes again to be seated, we waited another 15 for the server to arrive, never received our waters, and only saw our server three times: when we ordered our food and drinks, when he brought us the food, and when he returned our check.
Now it turns out that the sandwich bread wasn't vegan. The restaurant has "apologized" for their misleading menu after the onslaught of complaints, and instead of making changes and educating their staff so that their vegan items are actually vegan, they've decided to delete the word from their menu entirely. Some will argue that it won't hurt them at all, but here's my experience with vegans: We're some of the most loyal customers you will ever have. I have friends who travel to Vegas just to get donuts from Ronalds Bakery. I take trips to San Francisco just to eat at Ike's Place and Herbivore. I traveled 45 minutes to Provo from Salt Lake twice JUST for Station 22 corn dogs. I don't know any omnivores who will drive for 45 minutes just to get corn dogs. Now that I feel lied to and disrespected, I definitely won't be returning to Station 22--there are plenty of other restaurants who respect and cater to my diet, are forthright about their ingredients, and maintain an efficient and knowledgeable wait staff. My time and money is going to THOSE local businesses. read more
