We have a big family - 7 people - and absolutely loved this gem. Incredible food, friendly staff, great location, good size portions and easy parking! We got there around 9 am on a Sunday and got seated right away. Immediately, we shared the delectable cinnamon roll...I'm really picky about my cinnamon rolls and would totally recommend this one. Great icing, yummy dough and our whole family shared it! Everyone was happy with their food from savory to sweet. The stuffed French toast was big enough for me and my two daughters to share (none of us are huge eaters), it was incredible and the fresh fruit on top?! The biggest blueberries I've ever seen. My sons got the Farmer's scramble and the Breakfast sandwich on a croissant. My husband got the Big J's omelette. We don't care for hash browns and so the home fries (a combo of potatoes, onions and peppers) were delightful. All the food was excellent! I'm bummed this wasn't the next breakfast spot for us to frequent. The pictures look amazing, and yes, the presentation is great. They share a parking lot with Diego's and outdoor seating. They have a specials menu and a nice menu selection for breakfast and lunch. But.... the seating was not comfortable and worn out. The veggie omelet had all the good veggies, but the egg part was weird to me. Too much milk? Too much fluff? It was puffy with air and I saw wet egg juice bubbles when I opened it up. I'm sure some people like their omelets that way, but it wasn't appetizing for myself because I like my omelets cooked through. The country potatoes had bellpepper and onion which was good, but the potatoes weren't dry enough before cooking to crisp up. My boyfriend ordered the green chilaquiles and the sauce was good, but the beans needed salt. Unfortunately it wasn't the best I've had and I'm not expecting to try again. read more

Tried this cafe for the first time this past weekend and loved the local hometown feel to it! The staff is extremely friendly and the food portions were delicious and generous. I had the California Benedict, my husband had a HUGE omelette and my son loved his Mickey pancake. My husband was also a fan of his bacon Bloody Mary. Food is delicious! However they have what seems like a dozen employees. And yet they still take long to seat you or take your name down on the wait list. I do understand it was during a rush on a Saturday morning but so many employees walked by me and avoided eye contact. In the end the food made it worth it. read more

Absolutely ridiculous- I have a service dog (Psychiatrist service dog) and wanted to come in for breakfast. They told me I need "certification" or a paper that states so.... However they don't know laws or that those third part services are fake. It's illegal to refuse service to someone with a service animal. I feel discriminated against. read more

Start Fresh Cafe had delicious food, extremely friendly staff, and excellent service. Breakfast was served quickly and we all were very happy with our meals. They also were one of the most dog friendly restaurants we have been to, even providing a special water bowl for our dog when our waters were served. Start Fresh Cafe is a quaint little diner, more or less center of town on the main drag. Truth be told, I've been coming to this same greater parking lot for 20+ years to buy carne asada and gringo burritos at the Mexican food place next door (currently called Diego's, but variably named over the decades). Alas, Ben can not live by Carne Asada alone (Hasn't stopped me from trying, mind you) and sometimes, a good diner breakfast with all the fixings satisfies the soul. Mrs. Picante and I stopped in here on our way home from C-bad, sort of one part hunger and three parts memory lane... Upon entering on a late Sunday morning, we were third in line waiting for a table, and the place was packed. Not a bad sign, sure, but the delightful smells of bacon, hash browns, and fresh coffee did that cartoon "come-hither" hand thing, and had me ready to throw down with three eggs and something with strawberry jam on it. We took a seat outside on the narrow front patio (really, a fenced-off, tiled area between the parking stalls and the restaurant front window) and our server handed us menus. Despite sitting outside at the furthest table, our server quickly brought coffees, took or order, and kept checking in regularly for refills and extras. Great service! We both ordered the vegetarian omelet-- a three-egg creation with cheese and a slew of vegetables, including spinach and broccoli. Avocado slices and hash browns (or tomato slices/cottage cheese, dieters!) make it a meal. Sourdough toast arrived at the table warm! For $30 including a nice tip, this place isn't Wendy's cheap, but not a bad deal. Like all of Oceanside, an eclectic mix of clientele provide opportunities for people-watching, even the possibility of a scene or outburst. The range of Yelp reviews for this cute little unpretentious spot speak to that diversity. Still, I recommend you give this place a shot next time you're passing through and simply can't stomach the idea of JITB French toast strips or five rolled with guacamole for breakfast. My husband and I went to Start Fresh last Thursday. We noticed it on our way to our normal breakfast place. It was so cute and reminded me of a cafe you'd go to back East. The food was home cooked and absolutely delicious! There is a huge variety of items that you can have gluten free if you like. The Popeye Scramble is my favorite because it's loaded with Spinach, mushrooms and tomatoes with a sprinkle of feta cheese. I added Avocado and wow It's so good! They have a lot of homemade muffins, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy that will blow your mind!!! It's busy on the weekend but there's plenty of seating (inside and out) and the food comes out FAST! We just went again today (Saturday) because we enjoyed our breakfast so much! The owner is lovely and our server Dale was so friendly and so excellent I can't say enough about her! She was attentive and upbeat. I had heard this is THE place for pies, so on 2 birthday occasions over past 2 months I wanted to treat family to a great pie. I was disappointed both times. One was blueberry and one pecan. I've never noticed this cute little spot. A friend invited me for breakfast and as soon as I walked in I saw the pies. OMG! I ordered my traditional French toast with whip cream, strawberries and blueberries, hash browns, bacon, coffee and a Mimosa. I didn't take a pic (I was in to much of a great conversation). As we talked I look around the restaurant and everyone working was so pleasant. The food was great! The atmosphere was nice and warm. Before we left, I ordered my husband some breakfast to go and of course a slice of pie. I got coconut cream pie (delicious). I think I'm going to start bringing more friends and family here and there was no wait. I wish they would be open longer but you only have till 2pm. Quick on seating, ordering and getting the check but in no way rushed. Coffee warm-ups always on time. Booth is a little small for my width, but that's on me. Eating on the makeshift outdoor tent due to Covid 19 is surprisingly pleasant, especially these HOT days, there is a cool ocean breeze. They are very good about cleaning the tables. My friend and I were looking for somewhere different to eat last week so we stopped in at the Eat Fresh Cafe. It's pretty old school but the first is too notch for Americana. They have a great breakfast and lunch menu. We ordered lunch on this particular day. We sat outside due to the COVID regulations but that was great! We love it outside. He ordered a chef salad and I the fish and chips but substituted for onion rings. The salad is just beautiful, crunchy and fresh. It looked like a work of art. The fish came out hot and fresh. The Cole slaw has a sweeter taste, with pineapple I think. We also came back a second time and I had the tuna melt. The sourdough toast it came on was perfectly grilled. I ordered the stuffed hash browns from the specials board. Onion, sausage, gravy and cheddar cheese stuffed inside crispy, golden hash browns topped with 2 eggs. I can't put into words how delicious this was. A cheese pull as I brought the crispy salty potatoes covered in gravy to my mouth almost brought a tear to my eye. Might want to plan on hitting the gym or skipping lunch after this one because you're going to eat the whole thing. I went solo and sat at the counter. I was placed right in front of the kitchen hot counter and watched each plate come out of the kitchen. Everything looked bomb AF. Omelettes, frech toast, biscuits gravy galore. Made my mouth water. The cooks took pride I their work and the plates looked outstanding. Luckily the service was fast and I didn't have to wait long until my hash browns we're ready. This is my favorite breakfast place to go to in Oside. I always take my family here whenever I have a chance. The people here are amazing, they always greet you with a smile and a great attitude. They make the visit extremely special and welcoming. The food is the best! My favorite plate is the Lowrider breakfast plate, it is always made with perfection and fresh ingredients.
