Steak n' eggs. Steak is complete gristle.
    Lee S.

Pros: Foodserver is very nice, funny, happy, works HARD and takes an accurate order. Food is aesthetically pleasing. Bathroom was clean. Cook makes food EXACTLY how ordered. Cons: Steak was COMPLETELY inedible. Usually I am cursed with the gristlely steak. This was my boyfriend's turn. I have NEVER seen him have to spit bites out into his napkin before. He could not find one edible bite, sadly. (Steak and eggs.) My pancake sandwich had no flavor. Pancakes were blah. I didn't even take the leftover home. And I generally LOVE pancakes. We were never checked on, (server was working alone and busy, so I understand.) Indifferent: We didn't notice anything scream 'Grandma'. Unclear of the name. Seems to have a good patronage. Especially from Veterans visiting the VA. Ammends: When Server brought the bill, he inquired about the meals. I politely mentioned the inedible steak. He kindly removed $10 off the bill. With all of the MANY restaurant options in the area, sadly, we made the wrong choice of where to spend our money. No reason to return.

This is Grandmas new location. They haven't been open very long but the new location is great! Patio is right in front. Same great staff is here at the new place. Glad they are still in business! Great food amazing service. Very kid friendly and make cool versions of the food to peak their interest. Potatos are fresh not frozen bulk stuff from Sysco or US Foods. And the coffee can be drank black because it actually has flavor and isn't super acidic.

Great breakfast and friendly service! I really liked the vegetarian omelette. Loaded with lots of veggies and cheese. The home fries are very good. My kids got the teddy bear pancakes with egg and bacon. Their sausage links are great. They kept our coffee full. We'll be back, thanks!

We decided to try this place out after a soccer game at the So Cal fields. Cute little hidden restaurant. Very inviting staff. The food was delicious. We cleaned out plates! I recommend you try it out.

Half order of biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs and crispy bacon.

Fast and friendly service. We were in town for a concert at Frontwave Arena and decided to try this place as it was near our hotel. The French toast and biscuits and gravy were delicious. I would highly recommend.

The service was good. The food unfortunately was not. The cod was so tough, it couldn't be eaten.

I recall it being a delicious and a wonderful dining experience. I have been looking forward to bringing my family and friends here all week. I am giving this restaurant 3 stars, because their food is still AMAZING and their staff is super nice and I believe deep down inside that they just had a REALLY OFF night. We had reservations for a party of 9 last night. The table was set up nicely and accommodated a few extra if needed, which I thought was cool. We started with some adult beverages: an Old Fashion, some Hotel Nacionals, a Fashionably Late, and a couple of beers. Everything started great. Dennis, our server was very cool and friendly and gave great suggestions. We ordered the mac and cheese sides and they were delicious with huge pieces of savory bacon in them. We also ordered the brussel sprouts which we never received and didn't even realize it until the very end when we received the bill because of all the other issues we had... but we'll get to that in a moment. But let's talk about what did go well... the delicious food we did get. We ordered the Pig burger which was sooo good and came with crispy fries. The fish for the fish and chips were 2 huge pieces and were delicious, came with yummy seasoned waffle fries and the tiniest tartar sauce and malt vinegar. I had to request 4 more for that amount of fish, but no big deal. Dennis brought out as much as we needed. Their ranch sauce is really good too. Don't judge just because it's a little peachy'ish and looks thousand island'ish. lt's still some very good ranch. My son said he really tasted the bitterness of beer in the fish batter but maybe it was just in that piece he had; I could not taste it in the piece of fish I ate. The short rib was really tender and delicious... the sauce was just a tad salty for my taste, but the mashed potatoes it sat on sort of balanced it out a little. The fried chicken thighs were really cooked well, juicy, crispy and seasoned perfectly. We ordered two Teres Major steaks. One rare with mashed potaoes, one medium rare with grits. The rare one came out medium and without any mushrooms, took FOREVEEERR to remake (the rest of the table was almost done with our meals...& not sure why it took so long since the restaurant wasn't that busy and it's a RARE steak). The one with grits came with mashed potatoes instead of grits. Dennis was super nice and apologetic and corrected both mistakes when we let him know. He then brought us a big bowl of grits. The manager (blonde gal) came over and apologized for the mistakes tonight, letting us know that usually does not happen, and let us know she'd be comping one of our steaks and would be bringing a dessert on them. We thought that was very nice of them. However, as nice a gesture. we never did receive that dessert. My husband handed Dennis his credit card before the bill arrived (before our friends could try to pay the bill) and not sure why but our bill never came, and we never saw Dennis again either after he boxed up our leftovers and took the card. We had to ask another server for our bill because we had been waiting for quite a while... and needed to head out as we were already late to meet friends at a lounge. The other server came back with my husband's credit card, the bill (that's when I finally noticed the brussel sprouts sides we never got but were charged), and let the server know. He immediately apologized and took it off the bill. So I'm not sure what happened last night at Flying Pig...missing and charged brussel sprouts, steak overcooked, missing mushrooms, mashed potatoes instead of grits, then a comped dessert promised but never delivered. WOW. I had to apologize to my friends. I was totally hyping up this place and it underdelivered. They automatically got their 20% gratuity for our party of 9 but anyone that knows me knows how much I absolutely love great service combined with exceptional food and that could have easily been a 30-35% tip had they been on their A game! We only come to Oceanside once a year. Maybe we will try again next year. Maybe not. This trip was about trying out a bunch of different restaurants and giving honest reviews on dishes/businesses we haven't tried before, or in a long time. Do better guys.

My friend and I were celebrating and wanted to try a bunch of menu items, and when we ordered, our server kindly suggested that it was going to be a lot of food. We got: - cornbread: 10/10 this was fantastic. Great for 2-4 people. Perfectly balanced flavors and dense. - broccoli: 10/10 I'm not going to lie, I read the reviews about the broccoli, and literally asked my husband if we were going to spend $20 on a whole head of broccoli. I was very skeptical to believe this was actually so good, but it was! The textures are really great; the florets are crunchy and the stem is a soft almost buttery texture. The flavors with the nuts and sauce are fantastic. It's a lot for 2 people, and would be ideal for 4 people to share. - market fish 12/10. The best thing we ate, wow it was so good. Every staff member I asked said this was their favorite dish, so of course, I ordered it. The fish was a steelhead trout. It was cooked perfectly, and the sauce, mushrooms, salmon roe, and kale perfectly complemented the dish. The portion is great! It's 6.5 oz, so easy to share. I would come back just for this. - chicken 8/10. This is a good bbq chicken, but it's just good bbq chicken. Nothing special, but tasty nonetheless. I only had a bite since I'm mostly pescatarian, but my husband gladly ate the whole thing. The dining experience is also great! The ambience is beautiful, but the inside is quite loud. We sat by the open door in the back, which was great. I'd either sit in the back again or try to sit outside because of the noise. The service was spot on. Heads up that they do charge a 4% surcharge, which is also taxed.

Good Vibe, Delicious Apps, and Good Service…read more My wife and I recently dined here after having a tough time deciding between Nick's on State and Campfire--so stay tuned, because a Campfire review is definitely coming down the road. When we arrived, the restaurant was buzzing. The host let us know it would be a 1.5-hour wait for a table unless we wanted to sit at the bar. We opted for the bar, and I'm glad we did. The atmosphere and surroundings were great, and the bar staff was incredibly nice and welcoming (one of them even thought I looked familiar). Right off the bat, we were served waters without even having to ask, which is always a nice touch. To drink, I ordered the Berry Yuzu Spritz. It was absolutely delicious, and the chunks of fresh fruit in it were a great addition. My wife ordered a glass of the Daou Reserve. She mentioned it probably could have used a little more time to breathe before being served, but hey, neither of us are sommeliers, so it wasn't a dealbreaker by any means. We decided to kick things off with the Shrimp Taquitos and the Bacon Deviled Eggs. The Shrimp Taquitos texture was awesome--perfectly crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside, and not over-wrapped at all. Every bite I took seemed better than the last! My wife felt they could have gone a little lighter on the creamy sauce, but for me, the crunch-to-sauce ratio was spot on. I was excited to tru the Bacon Deviled Eggs because it was my first time trying a deep-fried deviled egg, and it was a fun experience. It just took two bites to finish. While it was good, I didn't get much of the bacon flavor, and the filling needed just a bit more "umph" to it--it tasted mostly like a standard deviled egg until I piled on some extra chives for flavor. (Side note: These actually made me miss the incredible deviled eggs at a hotel in downtown San Diego. I have a review coming out for that spot soon, but if you want the name before then, just send me a message and I'll drop it for you). After demolishing the apps, our entrees arrived. My wife ordered the Chicken Piccata and it came out as two very hefty portions of chicken alongside mashed potatoes and a salad. It was a solid, pretty good dish, though nothing particularly stood out as a wow factor. I ordered the Bistro Plate, which featured a filet mignon served over toasted bread with tomato. I'm usually not a tomato fan, but the combination here really worked. The plate also comes with a soup and a salad. The salad was quite good. The soup was tasty, though I wasn't a huge fan of the deep-fried jalapeños inside because they got a bit soggy in the broth. As for the filet, it was cooked medium-rarish--perfectly medium-rare right in the center, getting a little more done as you moved outward. Overall, we truly enjoyed the food and the excellent service. The only real downside was our specific seating location. As the sun began to set, it blared right into my face at the bar. If you plan on catching a spot at the bar around sunset, check out my pictures and try to avoid the exact spot I was in. We had a really nice evening and would absolutely come back. Next time, we'd love to grab a booth and explore a few more items on the menu. Highly recommend giving them a look!
