petite cut prime rib plate at a perfect medium rare as requested.
Cathy G.

Wow! I hadn't been here in maybe 25 years! When I was a kid it was my grandmother's favorite and we went for many a family event! It really hasn't changed much. Don't expect a slick modern steakhouse, but do expect quality prime rib and decent value. (They have a special 4 course dinner M-W for $43.00) I went for the basic petite cut (8oz.) of prime rib. It was the right temp and had great flavor. It's a complete meal--soup or salad (tableside salad bar), steamed fresh veggies, and choice of potato. $39.00. The ambiance is old school and extremely nostalgic for me, a child of the '70's. They deserve a better score than what they currently have. FYI they appear to have a special prime rib lunch advertised on site-- worth a try the next time I'm up there.

Loved this place. In town for a wedding and my friend and I were craving meat. So we swung by this place. Entered through a little side door that takes you down to the bar and a seating area. Cozy. Warm. Old school salad bar steak house feel. We had Lily as our bartender. She was the best! Attentive and knowledgeable. Her dirty martini was delicious. I would go back just for those. I ordered the rib eye. Good price and delicious. The amount of sides was crazy! I got a baked potato, vegetable, steak and salad. I went for the Cesar but was tempted to get the garden salad because of the unique style. Like a salad bar but they make it for you. I would definitely recommend this place!! Go go go Thank you to Lily too for an enjoyable evening.

I made a reservation for 7:30pm on a Saturday night, and even though we arrived about 15 minutes early, we were seated right away. The dining room wasn't packed, but it had a steady crowd. It was our first visit, and the interior had a cozy, cabin-style vibe. We were seated upstairs near the window, with a large fireplace nearby--though it wasn't lit. For appetizers, we tried the sampler platter, which included potato skins, crab-stuffed mushrooms, and calamari. Everything was tasty. I wasn't a fan of the mushrooms personally, but the rest of my group really enjoyed them. I ordered the table-side salad with my meal, and it was a delightful experience. Our server brought out an array of fresh ingredients right to our table, allowing us to customize our salad exactly to our liking. The selection included crisp lettuce, vibrant carrots, crunchy cabbage, savory cheese, and a variety of toppings like green onions, croutons, sunflower seeds, juicy tomatoes, pepperoncini, garbanzo beans, and cucumbers. Each ingredient tasted incredibly fresh, making the salad not only delicious but also a fun and interactive part of the meal. For my entrée, I ordered the petite prime rib cooked medium, with au gratin potatoes. It came with mixed vegetables, au jus, and horseradish. The meat was tender and juicy, though I felt it could've used a bit more seasoning. The others in my party ordered the whiskey peppercorn top sirloin, the regular top sirloin, and the stuffed top sirloin. They all said their steaks were flavorful and cooked well. We finished with the crème brûlée for dessert, and it was incredible--one of the best I've had. The crisp caramelized top paired perfectly with the fresh strawberries and blueberries. Our server, Christian, mentioned it was only his third day waiting tables, and he did a great job. The restaurant has a rich history, and our first visit left a great impression. We were all glad we decided to stop in.

Ok, I had prepared to show unflattering images of this fine establishment; the charm and the beautiful service, all top notch! But I'm just going to leave it with these; some of THE BEST food ever...well amongst all others.

Tri Tip Sandwich

Food (4/5 stars): I finally tried the Oceanside Sunset Market and was blown away by this foodie paradise. The Tri Tip Sandwich at Hunter's Steakhouse was calling my name as soon as I could smell the BBQ. This was a bang for your buck meal because they loaded the sandwich with meat. They also smothered the meat with their sweet and tangy BBQ sauce, which added nice flavor. I wished the meat had a stronger marinade or dry rub because it lacked a little flavor and the BBQ sauce would've been even better if it were spicier. Experience (4/5 stars): * Price: a little pricey * Wait Time: minimal * Service: good * Parking: I recommend the free parking garage just a few blocks away from the market

Perfect ribeye.

This is my absolute favorite place to celebrate my birthday and special occasions. My mom took me since I was 7 years old and shortly after covid the Hunter Steakhouse in Mission Valley closed. So one day driving south from Anaheim I saw the Hunter sign from the freeway. For our anniversary my spouse agreed to take me to this special place. EVERYTHING was perfect, it was like a time capsule back to my childhood and it was wonderful. My dream come true, the perfect salad from the lazy Susan was identical to all salads I have ever had from Hunter. The ribeye steak was perfection. Great flavor for my medium rare steak. Our server was excellent. She was so helpful, attentive and extremely knowledgeable about the history of Hunter Steakhouse. If you want nostalgia and a great steak then go to Hunter.

Haunted history book

I saw this restaurant on social media as haunted restaurant located on an old cemetery, I wanted to check it out. It was in a good location very close to the 5 freeway, there is a parking lot. The prices here are decent, the inside decor was kinda old and not lit very well. While this place doesn't even come close to Fleming's or Ruth's Chris steakhouse, the price is right for the food here. I ordered their famous prime rib, the house salad from their salad wheel, a loaded baked potato, delicious brown bread with whipped cinnamon butter, and ended our meal with a chocolate cake. The salad wheel was interesting, you get to pick and choose anything you want to add to your salad, I loaded mine with everything. My prime rib was cooked right, but it seemed kinda small and was fatty. Service was good, I ask about any hauntings going on and was told by staff that their names being called several times, despite nobody nearby. Nothing too scary, they only have friendly ghosts. Also our server showed me their haunted book showing the history of the restaurant location. I was disappointed that I didn't encounter anything spooky here, but I would come back for the food.

Wonderful Wednesday night going to the huntersteakhouse! Great service, everyone was happy and friendly. I got the house cut of the filet mignon and it was absolutely one of the best I've ever tasted there or anywhere! It was wonderful for us to enjoy our meal in the nice environment, clean and cozy. The cute little candles on the table were a nice touch. We found out that Juan was the cook that night so kudos to him for the perfect cooking of my filet mignon of medium well. :)

My wife read the place was haunted and that was our premise to coming here lol. I haven't been to a Hunter's in forever. They were able to seat us quickly and the food was decent for the money, the steak was good and the Potato was ok, pretty traditional steak and potato. It wasn't amazing but it was good enough. I might check it out again sometime when in the mood for a steak. The bench seat I sat on was broken and I really sunk into it, so I had to scoot over closer to the wall to sit properly. The building is a bit old and they seemed like they might be a bit understaffed. It's kind of an interesting place inside. All in all, I would check it out again on another night. I think it was pretty slow on the night we picked, it would be fun to try some of their other items.

So I have to acknowledge that a lot of my love for this place is nostalgia. Memories of coming here with my family as a kid for a special occasion still fill my head every time I walk in. With that being said, I do feel this has taken a spot as the more affordable steak house now, with higher end restaurants and more creative menus taking hold in the area today. We went in for brunch and were able to share a Tri-tip breakfast burrito and leave full and with leftovers. It also came with muffins, side of potatoes, and fresh fruit, which helped fill us up fast. If you choose to drink, you can also get a $5 bottomless glass of champagne (not for sharing) with your entree, which is a steal! Basic menu offerings, which feels like enough variety for the sweet or savory tastes. The negatives though: the older location could really do with a deep cleaning. Some low traffic areas of the building or just extra messes not always seen right away are becoming more apparent and need to be tended to. The Tri-tip this day didn't seem the freshest- kind of like leftovers to be used. Still good flavor, but could be better.

I really picked this place because of the history behind it. The location and atmosphere aren't too bad. The lights were low, you get a cabin feel. The service was nice we were greeted as we entered and able to select which table we would like. The food was good, but I for sure had better steak. But everyone's palate is different. I would still say it's a great place to visit...

The new nine-ounce Japanese A5 Wagyu.
Stanley C.

I came here for dinner about a week ago during prime dining hours, and the place was absolutely packed. Even so, the kind hostess found me a seat right by the fireplace. Unfortunately, the fireplace wasn't on--probably a winter-only thing--but the dining room still had that warm, cozy, inviting ambience I've always loved here. My waitress went above and beyond to make my dining experience exceptional from start to finish. While browsing the menu, I couldn't take my eyes off their new 9-ounce Japanese A5 Wagyu, so that's exactly what I ordered. It came with a salad of my choice and a side, so naturally I went with their famous tableside salad--where you get to pick your ingredients right at your table--and their Au Gratin potatoes. The entrée also came with steamed vegetables. I started with an appetizer of potato skins. For how busy it was, the wait for food was reasonable, though it did take a bit. The potato skins arrived piping hot, loaded with toppings, and absolutely delicious. My only critique was the ranch--they gave just enough for about two skins, so I had to ask for more. I'm glad I did, because their ranch is incredibly creamy and flavorful; it's the perfect pairing for the skins and honestly so good I could dip almost anything in it. Next came the tableside salad. I went with everything: pepperoncinis, chickpeas, green onion, purple cabbage, sunflower seeds, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots, cheese, and croutons. It was massive--almost too big--but super fresh and flavorful. About 30 minutes later, my steak arrived. I'll admit, for the price, it was smaller than I expected, but that's the reality with the world's finest beef. I let my waitress choose how it should be cooked since it was her favorite cut, and I have to say, it's now my favorite too. It cut like butter, tasted like butter, and was pure perfection. The Au Gratin potatoes were creamy and flavorful, and the steamed vegetables complemented the dish well. Highly recommend the steak--just be prepared for the smaller portion. I couldn't leave without dessert, so I asked my waitress for her recommendation. She suggested the raspberry cheesecake, and I'm so glad I went with it. It came out in about 10 minutes, was rich and tangy, and absolutely amazing. Overall, my experience was top-notch, as usual. The food was outstanding, the service was impeccable, and the atmosphere was just as inviting as always. Dinner here is definitely not for the cheap, but if you're after quality, flavor, and service that delivers every time, it's hard to beat. A small heads-up--during dinner service, the restaurant is quite dimly lit. I will most certainly be coming back to this establishment as I've been.

Can reservations be made for Xmas day in 2023?

I don't see, why not, but you would have to call. I also strongly urged you not to go there because the food absolutely sucks.

Are you open in thanksgiving ? Special menu?

Do they take reservations?

Yes

Do lunch and dinner entrees include any sides?

Yes, your choice of baked, mash or au gratin potato, or rice pilaf. Vegetables. Choose salad or soup. Their table side salad is fantastic!

Is there a children's menu?

I believe there is a children's menu. I've seen lots of family groups eating dinner there....and children's plates seem to be smaller. If you have not yet tried Hunter, you… Read more

I was soooo excited about the Philly connection, as I'm very familiar with cheesesteaks having lived near Philly in a past life. Well, I was sorely disappointed. We were told that the bread is flown in daily from Philly. Well, I don't know where it's coming from because it's definitely not the same bread as what they normally use there. The sandwich and meat were dry and flavorless. Totally underwhelming unfortunately. So then we saw that they made key lime pie there too! Again, I was SUPER excited because key lime pie is my favorite dessert of all time. And again...disappointment. I took one glance and saw that it was light green in color and knew I was gonna be mad. Yall, Key lime pie is yellow. You should NEVER add food coloring. That's just gross and inaccurate. The texture and flavor were also off. Texturally it was way too thick and dense, which would have been fine if it actually tasted like key lime. But it was severely lacking in that tart key lime flavor that it's known for. I'd definitely go back because of the service and vibe. But I'll maybe try a burger and the cheesecake instead.
