Everything was SO fresh and flavorful! We came in Saturday night and they were pretty busy, but surprisingly, we got seated really quickly. You can always grab a drink at the bar while waiting, which is a nice touch. Service was fast, especially considering how busy they were. We ordered the crab & avocado salad, ponzu scallop, miso-glazed scallop, and wood-fired salmon. Honestly, everything was delicious! Fresh, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. I'd give Blue Water Grill a solid 3 stars. Nothing was necessarily terrible, but the overall experience was pretty underwhelming. Service was slow at times, and it honestly felt like our table may have been seated outside of our server's typical section, which could explain some of the delays. That said, Ada was absolutely lovely--knowledgeable, warm, and genuinely wonderful whenever she was with us. Unfortunately, the wine arrived warm, which was disappointing, and the meal itself was very mid. The Gemelli pasta was so bland. For the price and the reputation, I expected the food to be much more memorable. Problems with two of the meals were swiftly rectified, so that explains our four stars. The restaurant is gorgeous with indoor and outdoor seating, cool artwork with a wall of fishing rods, a chalk drawn mermaid and octopus, and a nice fish market showcase. We started off with some complimentary bread, and dove into the menu. My wife went for the battered Shrimp Tacos ($22) with jack cheese, cabbage, pico de gallo, avocado, lime crema, and green rice. She loved her tacos, and since she isn't a rice person, she offered it to me and I thought it was delicious. I went into the appetizers for the Grilled Spanish Octopus ($22) with roast potatoes, garlic aioli and brava sauce made with tomato, paprika, onion and garlic. I loved about 75% of my dish. The potatoes were excellent, the sauce was fantastic, the thin end of the octopus was perfect, but the thicker end was undercooked and inedible. One member of our party ordered the Crab & Avocado Salad ($20) with arugula, mixed greens, grape tomatoes and vinaigrette and added a side of grilled shrimp for $9.50. Three quarters of the way through her meal, she realized her salad didn't have any of the added shrimp. Our server swiftly comped the octopus and removed the add-on shrimp charge. So, Bluewater Grill gets high marks for quickly dealing with those two problems. I see that Bluewater has a 4.2 rating over 1,800+ reviews, so they obviously have a high standard of food and service. This review is solely on the host and the estimated wait time. My husband and I have tried coming here twice without a reservation, and the most recent visit was on a Thursday evening. We have yet been able to sit down and actually try the food because we've walked away. For a table of 2, we were told the wait would be 30 minutes. We can easily see there were plenty of tables in the dining area. We were hungry and put our name down, but we decided to walk away and visit another restaurant that also served seafood. This is a disappointment because 5 minutes after we put our name down, we received a text saying our table was ready. This would've been a great wait time if we were honestly told how long it would be. Even if they told us 15 minutes, we might have waited longer! But we were already sitting at a nice restaurant across the street. We are in Carlsbad Village after all. There are other restaurants to choose from. The first time we tried, it was for a table of 4 on a Saturday evening and we were told a 2 hour wait. The wait times are so long, but is it even a good estimate? We ended up sitting at the bar because it was a bit crowded and we didn't have reservations. The bartenders were amazing. They were all friendly and attentive to everyone at the bar. The food was very good! I really enjoyed the trout where you can ask for different sides if you didn't want the scallops potatoes and green beans that it comes with. I don't love green beans so I substituted it for sautéed spinach. The fish was cooked to a nice temperature and it was moist and flaky. The complimentary sourdough bread with butter was delicious. The sushi roll was ok. I would skip that unless you don't want any of their other entrees. read more

I came here with my family on a Thursday afternoon. We were a party of eight and they were able to see us a little bit earlier. Sitting outside is lovely and there are umbrellas for shade. However, the train does come by every now and then, and it can get a little bit loud. The server was very attentive and was checking up on us consistently. Now... onto the food. The food was amazing. We came during happy hour, and we ordered the poke nachos, the crab and artichoke dip, and the fish tacos. Everything was incredible. The fish was very fresh and prices are reasonable. Another star of the show was the shrimp tacos, which are not pictured. The calamari was super crispy. I also got the fish and chips which were delicious. I've been coming to Bluewater for years now. I have to say I've had some good experiences and some not so great. This night was bad. I arrived to meet friends who were already seated. They had bread, but ordered more for us late comers. It was a while before a server came to the table, long enough that when he came to take our drink orders we had viewed the menu and were ready to order our food too. He was friendly and patient though. We again requested the bread that never came prior. They were somewhat busy as it was happy hour so we waited a bit. We just chatted and caught up. After a while we once again requested bread as it still hadn't been brought to us. Third time was a charm and we were finally brought bread. The bread was the highlight of the meal. Served warm, it is soft inside and crunchy out side with a soft butter accompaniment. Shortly thereafter, our food arrived except for one of our party's orders. Two people ordered firecracker shrimp and they were cold upon arrival. One decided to send it back. Sadly my scallops were so rubbery that the provided fork and spoon could barely cut through it. (You can see my picture from the last time I had this dish and the drastic difference was clear) I hate sending food back so I ate it but it was pretty bad. The missing order arrived and it was supposed to be blackened fish tacos. The ratio of cabbage and salsa on top to the small amount of fish in the taco was disappointing, as was the lack of seasoning. Also, we would have liked more water but it was never offered and we didn't see the server until we waved him down for the check. I've tried a lot of items on their menu over the years but the lack of quality and consistency I experienced on this night may have me rethinking that choice, unfortunately. read more

Love the potatoes and sauce it comes with. Was perfect texture. My husband got the clam chowder and he loved it, even more than the one at Ketch, and I agree. It was very good and flavorful. Filling too! My mom and I were kinda full from the app but we still ordered the scallops and cioppino and a side of scallop potatoes to share. My husband got the trout. All were sooo good! The almonds were a great texture on the trout, as were his potatoes. The cioppino was very good, lots of clam, mussels, shrimp and various fish, so filling, we only ate half. The scallops and mushroom/spinach was delish! That dish was my mom's favorite. She loved the light sauce it came in. The scallops were cooked perfectly. We sat outside on the patio--it was heated, and they even provided blankets, which made a huge difference since it was a little chilly. I appreciate the Bluewater Grill Seafood. They have a decent happy hour, with a good selection of food specials and drink specials. The interior of the restroom was clean and inviting. The service staff was very attentive and checked regularly. The regular checks was a plus, because we kept ordering more drinks. We ordered the steam clams, a sushi roll and crab cakes. What stood out of the most was the steamed clams. The garlic broth was delicious, so save some sourdough bread for dipping. We also ordered oyster shooters. The "islander" containing tequila and the the "shucker's choice" containing vodka. The hard liquor was a bit over powering and was abrasive. A month prior, we visited the Coronado location and had the "michelada" oyster shooter and it was decent as the beer didn't over power the oyster. There's a lot of potential in creating a non-alcoholic oyster shooter, and hopefully smaller in size. I would recommend a mexican flavor approach with a tomato base or even a Japanese approach with ponzu. The "shooter" size was about a "single" glass, a bit much but gosh trying to down it was abrasive, just to get to the oyster. Overall, I'll stick to the oyster on the half shell as they have a special for that at Happy Hour. I appreciate the staff that served us and this establishment as a whole. I've been thinking about the trout for a month so when I got off work, I drove straight there. I work in San Marcos. When I arrived, I got great parking. I walk in and the hostess is seating me at a table and to the right there's one booth open against the wall and two booths dirty, nobody in them. We had the Pre-Valentine set menu which was the seafood sampler paired with a glass of Prosecco and the lobster tail paired with a glass of white wine. So fresh and delicious!
