My wife and I and an old friend met at Bluewater Grill a few days ago and had one of the best dining experiences in recent memory in North County ! We chose to sit in the main dining room and from start to finish were taken care of by the best waitperson we've had anywhere in at least the last year. Her name was Kristen and she was knowledgeable about the menu and was perfectively attentive whenever we needed anything. We enjoyed the calamari as an appetizer and then the mussels and clams steamed and clam chowder and the sand dabs. The food was extremely fresh and well prepared. And the sourdough bread that comes to your table is as good as anything San Francisco has to offer. All parts of our experience were perfect and I will again mention Kristen. Just came here last night and omg, everything was SOOO GOOD!! It blows some of the other seafood restaurants out of the water...literally!!! Came here last night and was greeted with nice staff and seated at a nice table. Complementary warm sourdough bread!!! You had me at that! My mom and I ordered the octopus as an appetizer to share and my husband got the clam chowder. Both were delicious! I'm picky about my octopus and this one hits! Love the potatoes and sauce it comes with. Was perfect texture. My husband got the clam chowder and he loved it, even more than the one at Ketch, and I agree. It was very good and flavorful. Filling too! My mom and I were kinda full from the app but we still ordered the scallops and cioppino and a side of scallop potatoes to share. My husband got the trout. All were sooo good! The almonds were a great texture on the trout, as were his potatoes. The cioppino was very good, lots of clam, mussels, shrimp and various fish, so filling, we only ate half. The scallops and mushroom/spinach was delish! That dish was my mom's favorite. She loved the light sauce it came in. The scallops were cooked perfectly. We were so full but were celebrating a birthday so had to finish with a cake. The coffee cake was fire! Coffee ice cream was super good and I'm not a coffee ice cream person. I appreciate the Bluewater Grill Seafood. They have a decent happy hour, with a good selection of food specials and drink specials. The interior of the restroom was clean and inviting. The service staff was very attentive and checked regularly. The regular checks was a plus, because we kept ordering more drinks. We ordered the steam clams, a sushi roll and crab cakes. What stood out of the most was the steamed clams. The garlic broth was delicious, so save some sourdough bread for dipping. We also ordered oyster shooters. The "islander" containing tequila and the the "shucker's choice" containing vodka. The hard liquor was a bit over powering and was abrasive. A month prior, we visited the Coronado location and had the "michelada" oyster shooter and it was decent as the beer didn't over power the oyster. There's a lot of potential in creating a non-alcoholic oyster shooter, and hopefully smaller in size. I would recommend a mexican flavor approach with a tomato base or even a Japanese approach with ponzu. The "shooter" size was about a "single" glass, a bit much but gosh trying to down it was abrasive, just to get to the oyster. Overall, I'll stick to the oyster on the half shell as they have a special for that at Happy Hour. I appreciate the staff that served us and this establishment as a whole. I've been coming to Bluewater for years now. I have to say I've had some good experiences and some not so great. This night was bad. I arrived to meet friends who were already seated. They had bread, but ordered more for us late comers. It was a while before a server came to the table, long enough that when he came to take our drink orders we had viewed the menu and were ready to order our food too. He was friendly and patient though. We again requested the bread that never came prior. They were somewhat busy as it was happy hour so we waited a bit. We just chatted and caught up. After a while we once again requested bread as it still hadn't been brought to us. Third time was a charm and we were finally brought bread. The bread was the highlight of the meal. Served warm, it is soft inside and crunchy out side with a soft butter accompaniment. Shortly thereafter, our food arrived except for one of our party's orders. Two people ordered firecracker shrimp and they were cold upon arrival. One decided to send it back. Sadly my scallops were so rubbery that the provided fork and spoon could barely cut through it. (You can see my picture from the last time I had this dish and the drastic difference was clear) I hate sending food back so I ate it but it was pretty bad. The missing order arrived and it was supposed to be blackened fish tacos. The ratio of cabbage and salsa on top to the small amount of fish in the taco was disappointing, as was the lack of seasoning. Also, we would have liked more water but it was never offered and we didn't see the server until we waved him down for the check. I've tried a lot of items on their menu over the years but the lack of quality and consistency I experienced on this night may have me rethinking that choice, unfortunately. read more

We sat outside on the patio--it was heated, and they even provided blankets, which made a huge difference since it was a little chilly. The oysters were fantastic, and the seared ahi tuna over rice with green beans was delicious. The "dirt with worms" dessert was a big hit with the kids, and the crème brûlée is a must-try. I've been thinking about the trout for a month so when I got off work, I drove straight there. I work in San Marcos. When I arrived, I got great parking. I walk in and the hostess is seating me at a table and to the right there's one booth open against the wall and two booths dirty, nobody in them. I asked can I have a booth instead and she kind of giggled and said no. She offered me a seat outside. Her colleague looking at the bookings echoed "No." Rude. Forget retraining, they should be fired. That's who's handling your customers. We didn't realize the train track with a loud horn is right there- but doesn't last only a few seconds. I ordered walnut crusted halibut with lemon capers. It came with a side asparagus and scalloped potatoes. Hubby ordered panned seared scallops which came with mushrooms, spinach and shallots. A wonderful tasting wine sauce. The fisherman's plate was bad with 2 little scallops, cold stale fries, and had better fried cod at Long John Silver :) I also tasted the misoyaki butterfish which was tough and the rice undercooked and not soft as it should be. Sat in the bar on a Friday night and it was still happy hour, we had a yummy beer and white wine, both which were on happy hour, then we shared two appetizers on the happy hour menu both of which were really good. Very helpful servicing our table. The clam chowder was perhaps the best chowder during our few days in Carlsbad. The Gemelli Pasta was ample to share for two. Sufficient amount of shrimp, could perhaps added a few more pieces of scallops. Overall, the pasta entree was flavored and cooked well. The meals for the kids were bento box style. First time visiting Bluewater Grill in Carlsbad! Excited to visit here for lunch on a Saturday. The location of the restaurant is perfect near the Carlsbad Village. There is some parking right in front of the restaurant in the lot, but also plenty of public parking around. Parking can be challenging on the weekends during the day. The service was great! We sat down right the way in a large table. The menu has a good selection of seafood options, grilled, seasoned, fried, sautéed. We ordered fish and chips (2 pieces) and prawn linguine. The fresh complimentary bread was excellent! Really great to see that to start the meal. Mt prawn linguine was well seasoned and shrimp was excellent. Very fresh and well seasoned and cooked. The linguine was overcooked, too soft, but overall, I enjoyed the plate. Unfortunately, the fish and chips was disappointing. Very heavy breaded with the batter, almost like a hotdog. I believe they can definitely do better than this. We will probably visit again, but choose other dishes. read more
