We went here on a Tuesday evening for dinner and were surprised at how busy they were. While we had a reservation and didn't really need it the restaurant filled up nicely and the bar only had one or two seats available at 6:45 PM. We've been numerous times over the years too the Hunter's steakhouse, but it has been at least 10 years since the last visit. It basically looked the same as 10 years ago. We could see that they've updated some of the property, but not much. Pleasantly we found the service was attentive, quickly getting our drink orders and then our food order. The delivery of the drinks took a little time, but we were in no rush. The salad made at your table is still a pleasant treat as I am unaware of any other North County restaurant doing likewise. Additionally they don't skimp on all the add ons to the salad. We ordered their largest bone in prime rib. It came with the salad made at your table, choice of potato, a vegetable along with the bone in prime rib. We shared this dinner and ordered a second table side salad side. This was plenty of food for the two of us. The prime rib was cooked perfectly, delivered at good temperature and tasted excellent. While we certainly wouldn't go back for the ambience, we would go back to enjoy reasonable prices, along with the delicious food. read more

Vegetables in the salad were fresh. They did table side service where they asked what you wanted and built your salad with what you liked. I ordered a medium fillet mignon with fromage mushrooms. The mushrooms were salty. I removed them and steak underneath was still salty. Vegetables were good in my opinion but bland in my husband's opinion. My steak was a little tough still. I had a terrible experience with this place and it was my first time here at this restaurant, I do understand we had a party of 20 and we had a reservation for my grandmothers 80th birthday, but when we got there they didn't input our reservation so we had to wait another 30mins. I do understand we're a big group and she has to attend other tables but when our food arrived we still haven't gotten our drinks yet and we told her multiple times about our drinks. We had a party of 10 for a late Christmas celebration here, upstairs and we had the room to ourselves. It was very nice . We really enjoyed the experience. Our server was very sweet and attentive. We ordered just about every appetizer on the menu. They were all pretty good . The calamari was the only flawed dish . The chef accidentally over salted the appetizer. We each ordered either prime rib or a delicious steak. I had a perfectly cooked medium rare prime rib with vegetables and au gratin potatoes. It was delicious. This is a review for two seperate visits! Went with my boyfriend for a date night since I was interested in seeing if the ghost would make an apperance. They did not, but the wine pairing recommend for my steak was delicious. Boyfriend said the potatoes were a little bland but nothing some salt and pepper couldn't cure. I used to visit Hunter Steakhouse when it was Hungry Hunter and one of only a handful of local restaurants. I have to admit I haven't been in for at least 20 years. We finally decided to come back to celebrate our son's birthday. We were a party of six early on a Saturday evening. I'm so glad we made reservations. It was very busy. The parking lot was pretty full and the spaces were a bit narrow. I was very disappointed to find the lodge motif I had liked so much had been replaced with underwhelming photos of the pier and local Oceanside beaches. I guess the lodge decor has gone out of style but I have to say it was much better than what they have now. The restaurant is very run down. The tables are probably original to the day they opened in 1970. There was a musty smell when we walked in and the ladies room smelled horrific as if there was a sewage leak. Our waitress, Roxi, was outstanding. What a lovely young lady with a great smile. She took great care of us. I ordered a Mai Tai. It was pretty strong. We started with the Calamari. It was delicious. Three of us ordered the prime rib and chose the table side salad. The salad was very fresh and I liked that I could choose the toppings I wanted. Our bread came when the salad was served. We were a large party so we did have to ask for extra bread and we were accommodated. The prime rib was very good, cooked just the way we had ordered. It was tender and juicy. We all loved our food, however, my son ordered the porterhouse steak and he said it was chewy. That was a disappointment considering what it cost. He had been looking forward to a good steak. I hope someday they can renovate this place. There is so much potential. I would like to try their lunch sometime. Hopefully the issues with the odors will be resolved. We live in Carlsbad and wanted a steak dinner. Not too many steak houses left. We haven't been to Hunter Steak house in a few years so we tried it tonight. It was the perfect meal. We tried the 4 course dinner and it was delicious. My husband had the Prime Rib and it was a large cut with very little fat. I had a steak and it was cooked perfectly. When we visit Oceanside we like to visit Hunter Steakhouse. We sit in their "dungeon" as I call it because you walk down and it has a bit of a speakeasy feel to it. There is a fireplace if you can get lucky enough to sit by it. We ordered a martini and a old fashioned. For food we ordered the shrimp scampi and the huge prime rib...everything was spot on!! If they removed the ugly tarp in the back and relocated the trash, they could extend the back to create outdoor seating that overlooks this beautiful spot! We loved the vibe of the trees in front and the cabin feel, but when we walked in, the vibe was not so nice. The music was cheesy 80's and it had a dark feeling inside. The hostess, bless her heart, told us we need to wait since there was only one waiter apparently and "many parties ahead", although it seemed like not much was going on there... We took a look at the menu and decided no to paying $17 for 2 eggs and some bacon, with maybe some fruit and French fries? I'd rather go to Sprouts and buy an 18 pack of eggs and pack of bacon and cook it myself for that price. Not worth the energy of eating in that place.
