My Daughter and I came for a quick bite during Lent almost 3 years ago and we keep being drawn back. The Katsu fish Sando is a light panko breaded Alaskan cod with sliced tomatoes, shredded cabbage and pickled onions with their island sauce on a brioche bun. It is perfectly balanced with sweet and savory flavoring. Their food has been consistently delicious and their service on point. The Leucadia spot is the original location and they have expanded into Encinitas and soon into Carlsbad. Jack was at the counter and was very kind and courteous. I tried fish101 this Thursday night and it is definitely a great spot to grab a quick and casual bite. There was a long line - this place is so popular - but thankfully the line didn't take very long. The wait in the line was a good amount of time to give me the chance to take a look at the menu before ordering so I didn't mind it at all! It was easy to order at the restaurant. Grab our order number and find a seat and just wait for the food to come out. I was worried the food would take a while because so many people were there. The food came quickly, so there was no issue. I got a bivuoac berry cider which was delicious and very drinkable. I opted for some clam chowder, rocket salad, and the seafood curry as well. The clam chowder was delicious and creamy. Not TOO rich and not too salty. The rocket salad was pretty standard. I don't order any fish with it since I was ordering so many items already and I didn't want to be too full! Just wanted to add some veggies to my meal. The seafood curry had some great flavor. I was a bit surprised that the curry was more of a soup consistency. I was expecting a thicker and more saucy consistency but it was still good. I think it could've been a bit more flavorful. I liked the fish, shrimp, and veggies in the curry and I loved that they cooked the fish perfectly. It was nice and soft and had a delicious char on it. Highly recommend ordering the mahi mahi à la carte--great quality and a very fair price compared to bundled menu options. It's light and perfectly cooked, and the fries were a really nice contrast without feeling too heavy. The IPA was also excellent and paired well with the food. My husband loved his poke, and the shrimp burrito bowl was another standout--ordering it bowl‑style with all the verde sauce was the right move. FISH 101 @ ENCINITAS Parking is available on the street, right on the main strip of Encinitas. My friends and I visited on a Saturday evening, and the place was definitely packed. Once you walk in, it's pretty simple, you grab a menu, decide what you want, go to the cashier to order, and then get a number. You can choose any available table. We ended up getting a table and tried a variety of items: shrimp tacos, fish tacos, clam chowder, and a burrito. Most of the food was really fresh and flavorful. The clam chowder could have had a few more clams, but at $10, it was still solid. The burrito was massive filled with beans, rice, and everything else you could imagine, for just $14. The vibe of the place was lively, with lots of people coming in from the beach. The service was decent, and overall, the atmosphere captures the classic Encinitas energy. We first visited Fish 101 a few years ago, and the fish tacos here were memorable enough that our family had to visit this place again during our most recent Legoland visit. Both parking and an empty table can be a bit tricky to find, but don't let that be a deterrent. The food here is worth it. Gosh I love this place! Grab a menu and get in line. Place your order and grab a table. If you bring your four legged pal sit out front. Today we ordered tacos and a side of french fries. I enjoyed the grilled shrimp tacos. Each taco had three juicy shrimp on them with cabbage, diced tomatoes and that delicious white sauce. My husband enjoyed the Baja fish tacos with the beer battered fried shrimp. There's a decent piece of fish on each taco. You can't go wrong with anything you order. Parking is a bit difficult right now. The street parking is impossible and there's construction being done on the space across the street. It looks like that space is hopefully becoming parking. I went here for a Saturday lunch. There was no parking lot, so I parked in a nearby neighborhood street. It wasn't too bad finding parking, thankfully. I ordered the grilled mahi mahi fish tacos ($13.95). The tacos were unfortunately bland, despite the pico de gallo and sour cream topping the tacos. The mahi mahi seemed fresh, but lacked seasoning. I put the tomatillo on the tacos, but it still was bland, so I used my friend's chipotle crema. Thankfully the chipotle crema was spicy and tasty, so it saved the tacos. If only the tacos had that sauce on the side. My friend's grilled shrimp burrito was bland too, so I also had to use the chipotle crema. Unfortunately I don't think the shrimp was as fresh as the mahi mahi. It was hot outside, but thankfully they had fans blasting in the outdoor seating. There is also plenty of seating, both indoor and outdoor. I also have no idea how long it took to get my food, as the restroom line took over 15 minutes (there was only 1 restroom). Overall, it was a subpar experience food-wise. I'm still on the hunt for the best fish tacos in San Diego. read more

Three tacos is plenty, but you'll be sad when that last one's gone! They're great either with a squeeze of lime, a bit of green salsa, or with a bit of guacamole. Parking took a time or two around the block to find but once you step inside the place has a welcoming, cozy, local fishing joint feel. We're so glad Mia was working for our first time in. She gave us top-knotch recommendations -- fish & chips, poke bowl with blue fin, katsu sandwich and the pineapple dole whip and strawberry ice creams. She also showed us around the seating areas and helped us find the right spot for our two toddlers and baby in a stroller. Every employee we encountered was friendly and helpful. An excellent staff that helps add to the shop's good vibes. The fish & chips comes in the option of two or three pieces and is BIG. It is lightly breaded, crispy, golden, fresh and delicious. Absolutely the best I've had. Even my two and four year olds loved it! I had the poke bowl with blue fin. The fish was so fresh. The sauce they put on the fish was so flavorful I didn't even need the chipotle crema that comes on the side. The pineapple dole whip is sweet and fresh while the strawberry is more tart. There is a swirl option of you need a bit of both! Lots of options for seating whether you want to be indoors, under a covered patio or fully outdoors under umbrellas. There is quite a variety of table sizes all the way up to a big wooden table with benches that can accommodate at least 10. read more

This is a decent spot! I do feel that my expectations were higher than the experience. I ordered the following: clam chowder, fried fish tacos, fried fish burrito, lemonade, wine. This part I understand does not have to do with the establishment itself. My partner & I were in line to order. The line will be formed by the front door. Because of the front door, we left a courteous gap at the door for customers to exit & enter the place. A customer unfortunately came in, and cut us in line. It was frustrating as we truly believe she saw us standing there and chose to not care. She proceeded to cut us in line, blocking the doorway now. How uncourteous. Customers struggled to come in & out the door now. Anyways, we got to order and the customer service was good. We got our drinks right away before we sat down. It's a pro & a con but the soup was also given to us right after we ordered / with our drinks. I would've preferred to drink my beverage before the soup came out. My partner liked the lemonade. I did like taste and temperature of the soup. I liked the crackers with it. It's a standard portion for the cup. It could have used more of the bacon flavor such as at The Fishery. The entrees came out quickly too, about 10 mins after ordering them. The portion of my burrito was big, and it also came with chips. I liked the flavors of the sauces on the side. The inside of the burrito was okay, but was hoping my fish would be crispier & it could have used some lime. My fish was somewhat negligible & I actually picked through the burrito at first to make sure it was the right order. I would try the shrimp burrito next time if I am back. My partner thought the fish tacos were average & the fish was crispy for those. Average prices ($15-20 each). Parking may be challenging especially during the daytime. There are some indoor and outdoor tables. It is counter service so you will order and seat yourself. This place looks like a total dive. Leucadia is hardly the funky neighborhood it used to me but, thankfully, there are still a few divey taco shops along the 101. But the line of hungry people in bathing suits and t-shirts that goes way out the door of this restaurant is a tell. Let's just say that something very un-divey is happening here. The food is really, really good. Yes, it's on the pricey side but you are paying for large portions and, more importantly, great quality. The seafood here is excellent. And if you don't like seafood, you are in the wrong place. It's extremely casual. You are going to wait in a long line and then order at a counter. Then you hunt, and possibly pray, for a table. They bring your food to you (and they brought our three orders out within about 5-10 minutes which was, amazingly fast. There are a bunch of tables outside the restaurant facing the street and a couple of tables in the front room with the ordering counter. But head to the back. It's an airy, laid-back space with a bunch of tables just waiting to be filled. Parking is really rough in this area. They seem to eternally being doing construction around here. There is free street parking and residential parking but be prepared to hunt for a while and then hoof it. It's not easy. The chips and guacamole appetizer is a solid start. The chips are thick, fresh, and crunchy. The guacamole is clearly freshly-made. Could it have used another pinch of salt? Probably. But there wasn't any left of it on the plate. We wolfed it down. Fish and chips has to be the most boring item on any seafood menu but they knocked it out of the park here. The batter is thick and delicious. The fish is incredibly juicy, and was dripping all over the place in a good way. The huge mound of fries below the fish looked dull and limp. But they are very well-seasoned and totally addictive. I loved the fries. The baja shrimp burrito probably weighs two pounds. It's as big as a tubby baby. It's stuffed with fried shrimp, rice, beans and crema. It has a ton of flavor. It comes with those same lovely fresh tortilla chips on the side. The poke bowl entree is another winner. It is just beautiful cubes of fresh poke with rice and avocado on the side. it's a simple dish but if the poke is good, you don't need much else. So is the wait in line worth it? I could eat here 5 times a week and since I live nearby, I am here at least 2x a week. Unless you don't like fish, there is nothing on the menu that disappoints. In fact I often crave the seafood curry, fish tacos, mahi mahi bowl and poke bowl. My daughter's go-to is the salmon bowl and my husband is obsessed with the Katsu sandwich. Ambience is typical Leucadia, very casual. Service is typical Leucadia too, friendly and kind. They are fast too! I usually pre-order with the app and it's always ready before the estimated time. Fish 101 is my home away from home and the only reason I'm reluctant to post this 10/10 review is because it will make the 101 more congested and the line longer. But they always seem to manage and satisfy and deserve the rave reviews! read more
